Can't bridge connection from PC to PS4 Posted: 26 Nov 2018 04:20 PM PST sorry for bad english, not a native speaker I'm trying to bridge internet connection from PC to PS4 using RJ45 ethernet cable. I'm using an internet modem to get connection (sadly best option where I live) and when bridging(?) my modem loses connection and can't reconnect until I delete the bridge. That's how it looks like in adapter settings and after i make the bridge. I tried changing connections priority and it didn't work. I would be glad if anybody had any idea how I could fix this. If i didn't explain something that could help you with recognizing what I do wrong just ask. [link] [comments] |
Portforwarding on TP-link nightmare Posted: 26 Nov 2018 06:59 PM PST So I'm using the Archer c7 router all with base settings. I recently built a computer that I would like to use as a server (currently running most recent version of linux mint). I would like to enable port forwarding so I could "ssh" into my computer from anywhere I want. However, I'm having great difficulty actually getting into my router settings. Searching my ip address and trying to connect to tplinkwifi.net from my mac laptop yields the following error: "Oops! It looks like you aren't connected to your TP-Link network. Please check your network connection and try again." Which is not useful because my connection is fine. I've restarted my router multiple times and I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do. Any input would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Flat ethernet to Rj45 module problem Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:09 PM PST Hi. I have run two flat ethernet cables from my living room to my study. I then connected it to an ethernet module. Pics attached. http://imgur.com/gallery/lxKEKAN Unfortunately I've just gone to test it by hooking up a POE access point and neither of them work. The problem isn't with that AP or the POE switch (I tested those separately). I have also since tested terminating regular ethernet cable in to my modules and it works perfectly. The problem, it appears, is that the flat cable has very thin internal wires that are not catching the modules teeth. How can I terminate these flat cable into the module? I need to use flat cable because I am running this under carpet. Help please! I really don't want to have to rip up this cable and start again. EDIT: It's been pointed out to me on another thread that my cabling is a mess and it isn't clear whether the pairs have been split. I'm 100% certain that isn't the case. [link] [comments] |
is there a way to monitor usage on my home network per device (mac addresses) Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:44 AM PST I want to see a list of all the devices on my home, and see how much data they use per devices. I am even willing to buy a new router (~$40) that has this feature built in, as mine doesn't have such feature built in. I also tried to flash a custom rom but my router didn't support it [link] [comments] |
Water leaked into network closet Posted: 26 Nov 2018 06:12 PM PST We had heavy storm over the weekend and water was dripping into my network closet. I'm mainly worried about damage to my network switch (TP-LINK TL-SG1016D) as the uplink/activity LEDs no longer light up but the power light is on and seems functional. The way it is setup is that the switch is mounted sideways so that the bottom is mounted to the wall and the ports are facing down and the vent is up. Water most likely got into the vents and shorted out the uplink/activity LEDs. I had an electrician come and he said the power was fine. I'm still concerned about any future or current damage to the switch or the plugs/cable. Should I replace it? Here is a picture of the setup: https://imgur.com/FKh18Nz [link] [comments] |
Router for serving up potato speeds (8Mbps) Posted: 26 Nov 2018 12:14 PM PST I need to get a router for my new internet service. The routers that cost $40 to $70 dollars have basically all the obvious features I need and there is only so much data that is going to be pushed through this network. But, they get 3 stars and I'm afraid they will be buggy and horrible - dropping connection inexplicably and for no good reason when great wireless routers of yesteryear were similarly priced for a router that served up cable for 2 very heavy internet users using up to 4 devices 24/7 - no headaches and cheap. I'm afraid of this happening, even with my closest neighbors a couple hundred feet away and similarly bereft of wireless capability, so essentially the minimum interference. What I do want is the reasonable maximum of that 8Mbps when delivered over wifi to a handful of devices, rarely more than 2, at least one ethernet port for a wired connection. Do I really need to pay $100+ just for a router that doesn't horribly suck for no apparent reason? [link] [comments] |
4x4 or 8x4 modem for a "up to 60 Mbps download" connection? Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:50 PM PST My parents are using a 4x4 modem with their 60 Mbps connection, and a friend gave me an old 8x4 modem. They won't upgrade unless if they know for certain it'll benefit them. Their original ISP plan was 20 Mbps down back in 2009. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST Hello, So I own an Asus router, RT_AC66U_B1 that is then connected to the box in our wall where the fiber cable comes in. Living in Sweden. Now usually there is no problem, but recently I went in to the routers interface and decided to disable UPNP as we have no use of it and it's usually recommended to disable I guess. Unfortunately this caused all of our internet to stop working. I get the error message "your ISP's DHCP does not function properly". And I've followed all troubleshooting steps such as restarting and even reset router completely. With no success. Even enabling it again doesn't do anything. Now my suspicion that I have is something I read about ISP having a lock on a specific MAC address which results in that I can't use my router since it's settings have been changed? Is this something accurate? If not how do I go about fixing this, I certainly want to have UPNP disabled if possible but I'd rather have an internet connection of course. And it is currently too late to call my ISP, besides their support tends to be trash. Any help is much appreciated! Best regards, Method [link] [comments] |
AirPort Extreme Radio Question? Posted: 26 Nov 2018 04:58 PM PST I have an HTPC that doesn't have a wifi card and I can't get a cable to it. Currently I have an Airport Express connected to it and set to join my main network. I'm also using the express for airplay. My main network router is a Nighthawk XR500 so I know the signal is rock solid and nothing is running in repeater mode. I have been getting lag and buffering when streaming and I'm suspect of the express. I have a 5th gen extreme and I'm wondering if the stronger radio in the Extreme would do a better job at passing bandwidth? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2018 04:51 PM PST Hello all, I'm running 12 Cat6 drops throughout my house and terminating them at my media room rack patch panel. My plan is to have 4 WAPs, 4-5 media components, file server, and maybe a few other things connect to a switch. My question is: my AT&T U-Verse modem has multiple internet enabled ports, is there any benefit connecting all those ports to the switch vs just one port? That would determine how many port switch I buy. From my understanding, I can route different VLAN traffic to different ports. I guess I'm not sure what benefit that provides. Any help or even other suggestions would be helpful! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a night capable security camera. Posted: 26 Nov 2018 08:36 PM PST I have a bunch of computers in my basement.
Both my router and wireless access point is from ubiquiti, so I do enjoy their product lines. Since this is my first security camera, I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. If you have a certain product in mind, that would be great too. Although I love ubiquiti product lines, I am perfectly open for another brand. Since this is my first network night security camera, what are some of the important features that I need to look for in such a product? Thanks. my current router: Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 6P my current access point: Ubiquiti UAP-AC-HD [link] [comments] |
Looking to install RJ45 panels/ ethernet in my home... Posted: 26 Nov 2018 02:07 PM PST For those of you with experience in this, what should I request or look out for when hiring a low voltage contractor? I'm trying to run CAT 6 lines into 2 upstairs and 2 lower level rooms. I have a large attic for access to upper level rooms. Bottom floor is slab foundation, no basement. All rooms have coax and phone lines pre-wired. Insights? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2018 07:38 PM PST My edgerouter 4 seems to be dead but I just wanted to make sure. Last night I started to get moments of lag in gaming. It would last for maybe 2-5 seconds at the most where all data would stop. Happened a few times last night so I thought it was my ISP doing some upgrades which has happened before. Well late last night I lost all data and it didn't come back. So I instantly thought my ISP was at fault. I went to my modem and rebooted it. It looked like it was connecting but my edgerouter 4 wasn't blinking. None of the port lights were on. So I rebooted the modem again and directly connected a laptop to it and low and behold internet was fine. So I instantly knew it was the router at fault. I rebooted the router by pulling the power cable out. When it came back up, nothing changed except one of the ports the 100 meg orange light was blinking for two seconds then would stop then blink again for two seconds then stop. I plugged my laptop into one of the router ports and got nothing. So I plugged my old router in which I still had since this edgerouter is only a month old and my network was back up and running. I then brought the edgerouter to my computer area for more testing. Whatever I tried, nothing was working. I rebooted it many times and no lights. It was getting late so I unplugged it and went to bed. Today I decided I had more time to troubleshoot so I plugged it in and my laptop directly to port 1 and it was working! I got to the router settings and all my custom settings were still there. I quickly made a backup file and saved it. I then rebooted it and it came up again. So I thought it was fixed. Went back to my network area, removed my old router, plugged the edgerouter back in and now it's back to doing the same old error. Port 2 the light blinks orange for two seconds then stops and this repeats. So I brought it back to my computer area and plug my laptop into it thinking maybe a setting is corrupted which is exploited when it's connected to my switches. Well I plug my laptop into it and it's still doing the same thing. Nothing is working. So this got me thinking. I let it set the whole night. Maybe it's getting too hot and overnight it cooled down which is why it worked for me when I first tried it today. When I hooked it up to my network, it was too hot already and stopped working. This router is only a month old so it's still under warranty. It has the latest firmware on it. 1.10.7. Is there something else I'm missing that I didn't update? I only updated the firmware after I bought it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2018 10:43 AM PST Hopefully this is the right place to ask this, but I need some advice. I have AT&T Fiber Internet 1000, but feel like the BGW210 Modem/Router combo is sub-par and am looking to add a new router to the equation. I live in a 1500 sq. ft. townhouse with the current router in the downstairs living room (south end of house) and am unable to move it to a different spot. I have my Xbox One X in the upstairs loft (North, but center of house) and I get network disconnections somewhat frequently. I also have 3 smart TV's (+1 wired right next to the modem), a work laptop, and a few phones/tablets we use throughout the house. I'm looking for advice on the best router speed/reliability for the space and price. Looking at the following, but open to suggestions:
I've also read a lot of you suggesting Ubiquiti routers / WAPs but don't know much about them. I'm not sure if I'd need the router and WAP or just the WAP connected to the BGW210. Thanks for any reccomendations. [link] [comments] |
Question about rack location and cable runs. Posted: 26 Nov 2018 07:10 PM PST I have a great closet in the basement that gives me access to the enclosure that houses the supply and return ducts with some extra space I can run cables to the attic. I'm planning to use Cat 6 riser UTP where my longest run will probably be 55 feet. Two questions:

Expanding home wifi area, should I buy an access point or another router (as an AP)? Posted: 26 Nov 2018 07:06 PM PST I live in a 2 story house. Modem & wifi router (Nighthawk AC1750) are in the living room downstairs in the back of the house. That side of the house & backyard have great wifi coverage/signal. My front bedrooms & driveway get reception, but signal isn't great at all. My front security cameras (2.4GHz) are even worse off since they're outside & have weak antennas to begin with. Previous tried some wifi extenders, but they really didn't help much. So now I have a Cat5e cable from the downstairs wireless router to an upstairs switch in one of the front rooms. Was originally looking to buy a new wifi router to use as an access point there, but found out you can just buy access point devices. After a few hours of looking, I'm stuck on which device what to get. It's either:
The EAP245 has 3x3 MIMO Technology which should be great for multiple cameras & devices running simultaneously 24/7. The Archer C9 has Beamforming Technology which might be better since the signal would focus on the cameras & devices. Any experts mind telling me which device I should get and/or is better? Thanks! Posted: 26 Nov 2018 06:54 PM PST I'm looking for a 2 gang wall plate that I can use to pass through a good number of cables between my network rack and the attic. So far the best thing I have found is this: https://vetco.net/products/double-gang-bulk-cable-wall-plate-with-grommet-white-hole This looks like it would be able to fit 24 cables, which is my worst case scenario number of cables. I'm surprised I can't find something similar anywhere else. Anybody know of anything? [link] [comments] |
Giving my parents a better setup for christmas, would this work? Posted: 26 Nov 2018 08:19 AM PST So my parents have been complaining about slow and unreliable internet for a while now despite having a 200/20 or 300/30 line. They live in a three-story house (second and third floor), with the modem and router placed on the third floor. They've been using a Netgear x4 R7500 for a few years now. They are renting out the first floor who's currently using their guest network for internet since it's been included in the lease (I don't want to think about what the situation is for them. But I haven't actually heard about any complaints on that front). Is there any common/standard practice on how you should/would set up their internet? I was thinking giving them a subnet would be better/more "serious" than just using the guest network. Anything to look out for? So - would a edgerouter X sfc paired with a unifi AP AC Pro work fine for this? The AP will most likely be placed on the third floor since the cabling in the house sucks after what I've understood. So unless it's absolutely necessary I doubt they'll want to go through with the effort. This might change if/when they install fiber further down the line (it's already been drawn to the house), depending on how they end up doing it. [link] [comments] |
Can i have wifi run to a waterproof box? Posted: 26 Nov 2018 06:28 PM PST I live less than a mile away from a friend of mine with spectrum. Could i have them run cable to a waterproof box and then manually service it to my house? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2018 05:56 PM PST Title. TL;DR - I'm on a wired connection with 5g getting 2-5% packet loss with spikes of 25-80% consistently. I get massive ping spikes when my mother is using her iMac (email, safari, microsoft apps), and turning off her wifi and resetting router doesn't help whatsoever. I'm also NaW and on Suddenlink if that has any influence. To go further into detail, I'm in California, have Suddenlink and 100mbps down, and i think 7.5up (might have to recheck that). But basically, I'm a gamer, have been my whole life and have never had these bad of issues in my whole life. I'm on a hardwired connection, all the way across the house due to the router not having enough throughput to push to the next room and I can't be in the same room as the router as its the family room. My mothers iMac is fairly new, and actually didn't cause these problems for me when she first got it, all she does is email, microsoft programs like excel, word and office and occasionally google maps. She doesn't have any crazy programs, games, high memory streaming or anything of the sort. So the main issue that occurs is in this scenario. If I want to play fortnite with some friends, or cod or whatever that may be, before i load up the game, i first have to do a few things. Firstly, reset the router. Idk what it is but its always helped even when no one was in the house and there was lag still occurring. Second, I have to turn the wifi off my mom's desktop regardless if she's using it or not, she's one of those people that leaves every application and window open and running even if she's done with it so without messing with her work I just shut off the wifi so there's no background data/bandwidth. Even with everything working as planned, I'm still experiencing packet loss, 2-5%, with spikes of 25-80% which is absurd and I have never had this with our internet the whole time we've had it, its literally unplayable. And as said in the title, I also get massive ping spikes when she is actively using her iMac as well, I'll go from a native 15-25 to 150-275. So that's what I'm dealing with and I still haven't found a solution yet. So if any of you have suggestions or answers for me I'd really appreciate if you'd share with me. Thank you in advance. Posted: 26 Nov 2018 11:45 AM PST Tldr: recommend me any router good for wired gaming and wireless streaming with open on support. And static routing :-) Hi reddit, I've been trying to find the dimensions of the rt-ac3200 with antennas attached and positioned upright. Reason: it's gonna be inside a (ventilated) cabinet. I wanted an Asus router because of wrt merlin (I want to utilize vpn from. router and utikise static routes etc) First choice would have been the RT-AC68U because it's sufficient for my use, and size of the house but the upright model is a no go. Second choice would have been the rt-ac87u but it has quite some issues with reliability, stability (or at least the launch ones do) Any other recommendations (dual and with good reach a must) are welcome. Posted: 26 Nov 2018 11:12 AM PST Hey all, looking for advice. I'll keep it short and to the point. I'm building a PC on Friday. I'm in college and my apartment complex will only allow me to put the router and modem in my living room. I did not get a wifi card and ive heard wifi extender to ethernet creates a lot of extra latency. Basically my question is in an apartment would buying a power line be safe? I can't be sure everything is wired to the same circuit, but I don't see how it wouldn't be. I don't want to have it shipped and than get burned bc it doesn't work, but at the same time it seems like the most viable option to get ethernet to my PC (in my bedroom). The PC is mainly for gaming, which is the only reason I'm concerned about latency to begin with. Thank you! EDIT: I'm assuming everyone here is familiar with powerline, if it doesn't tie in with home networking please let me know so I can find a different sub. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 01:48 PM PST So my mom called me up wanting to take advantage of Cyber Monday deals to hopefully fix her craptacular internet, but this is not really an area I know much about, so looking for advice. Her internet provider is COX cable internet and she owns her equpment - currently it's an Arris Surfboard SB6141 modem and a Netgear R6190 router; there are also two Apple WiFi extenders that were added to the network years ago in hopes to increase coverage (I don't have part numbers). At one point someone more tech-savvy suggested some of the problem was because her house is so far "down the line" on the cable service. Internet has always been "lacking" in this house despite being high speed. It's a U-shaped single-story house less than 2500sq ft, with stucco walls, the modem/router is located in an office in the middle of one side of the "U", house is wired with CAT5, Apple WiFi extenders were added years ago on opposite side of the "U" in hopes to get better coverage to that side of the house (kinda worked but devices had to switch between WiFi signals). If the "end of the line" theory is correct I guess there's not a whole lot to be done, right? I don't know any actual data speeds. New router considering is: ASUS AC1300, hoping the 5.0ghz off of 4 antennae will help spread the coverage better? Not sure what modem she should buy? Any help is appreciated. Dunno if she's wanting to spend like $200-300 on equpment, but any new equipment is likely going to be better than the 5+ yr old stuff she has now. [link] [comments] |
