Have a question about trying to find why a program wont auto-start (still learning) Posted: 01 Oct 2018 08:30 AM PDT so I've been learning A LOT over the last few weeks. I seem to be quite proficient with installing linux (which I'm proud of myself) [link] [comments] |

Can't get i3blocks to show "Now playing" for cmus Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:14 PM PDT Hey, first things first: I'm using i3blocks on i3wm with Linux Mint I've got i3blocks to show most things I want it to show but I can't get it to show ARTIST - SONG from cmus through cmus-remote. I've tried all the scripts I could find but not one did anything. The pre-installed block "mediaplayer" doesn't work either. Neither command=$usr/share/i3blocks/mediaplayer or command=/usr/share/i3blocks/$mediaplayer does anything. I've specified the instance as cmus but that doesn't work either. When I try command=cmus-remote -Q it shows the first line of cmus-remote -Q which says if it's playing or not. I feel like it shouldn't be this hard but I just can't get it to work. I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:24 PM PDT I think Windows on sda3 is riddled with viruses. Can I just make an image file with the VM and work away in my home partition (sda5), then wipe the Windows partition if all goes well, and then transfer it over to sda3? Will a #update-grub fix the bootloader after I have wiped the Windows partition? Many thanks. Edit: Repost: I mixed up host and guest on my original heading. Thanks to u/lutusp and u/Case963 for the answers [link] [comments] |
Mechanical keyboard for Ubuntu? Posted: 01 Oct 2018 10:31 AM PDT I don't really game, I just like the sound and feel of a mechanical keyboard. I've seen that you can buy Ubuntu keycaps separately, but should I be wary of buying just any keyboard? If I get an RGB keyboard will those effects still work? Any recommendations? Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:27 AM PDT Hello! I just recently began using Ubuntu, and so far, I am really enjoying it. However, there is one software that I am trying to download that I am struggling with at the moment which is Autodesk Maya. If I can get this downloaded, then I am fully able to use Ubuntu as my main OS. I've seen people using Maya on Ubuntu, and tried downloading it myself. However, there is something odd that is currently hindering my download. I am not sure if it is an obvious problem, or if it is much more technical. Hope that I can get some insight on this problem! Dell Precision 7720 with Ubuntu 16.04 only has guest account Posted: 01 Oct 2018 02:33 PM PDT So I just got a new dell laptop running Ubuntu and when it was setting up, the laptop crashed and now the only option for logging in that I have is as a guest. Sudo doesn't work in the terminal to make an account and I am confused on what I can do to add an account and fix this [link] [comments] |

Legacy ATI support and dual boot madness... Posted: 01 Oct 2018 02:04 PM PDT Hey, I'm having 2 issues.
Regarding the dual boot, my UFEI boot priority has 2 entries for ubuntu, and when I run update-grub from ubuntu, I can see them listed twice as well.
I cleaned the linux SSD with diskpart before installing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:49 PM PDT Im looking to buy a laptop for Ubuntu and I wanted to check if it is compatible with this laptop. Thanks for your input. If you have any other advice, please let me know. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:31 PM PDT I'm currently in a CS program where most of our work is done and evaluated on Linux systems, and it's becoming clear to me that running a Linux distro on my laptop in particular will make my life a lot easier. I have absolutely no experience however, so don't exactly know where to start. Here's what I do know:
I was planning on just finding a decent guide and just learning by doing, but figured it would behoove me to get advice from people who know what they're talking about, and to get input on the distro. Will Linux Mint work on my machine, or should I go lighter weight? I've heard I might encounter issues with the touchpad, are there any other issues I should be aware of? Edit: Also, I have no optical drive. [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to backup all the customization and programs i installed? Posted: 01 Oct 2018 09:18 AM PDT Since I am a noob I often have to reinstall my distro because I fuck up everything. Is there a fast way to do that? Also it would be fantastic to create something like a snapshot of my system, that I can restore at any moment [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 09:08 AM PDT Hi! I'm a regular win user and can google stuff, never touched any version of Linux. Do you think Ubuntu or any other Linux version would perform well (and be a better option than win10 performance wise) on a notebook that is based on Gemini Lake CPU (N5000 probably), 4GB of RAM, full HD, SSD? I need a stable system for a couple of weeks for studying - documents, emails, maybe videos. Then it'll most probably be used as a portable "just in case" work machine for same stuff. In terms of performance I'm mostly worried about RAM. In terms of OS itself I wonder if it has friendly wi-fi connectivity. Pretty sure working with docs isn't a problem at all, right? Thank you. I mastered terminal commands, what's next? Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:42 AM PDT What kinds of branches can I grow into now? I've heard about sysadmin, currently researching about that, and would love to hear which other options I have. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:39 AM PDT I'm trying to use Ubuntu to troubleshoot a Toshiba laptop. It booted to the DVD drive, and I chose the "live" option. It's gotten to a login page with one user "live user" but every time I click it, it goes to a black screen then comes back to that login menu. Is this because some odd hardware is preventing the GUI from Loading the desktop? [link] [comments] |
Simple Partition scheme for a Desktop? Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:32 AM PDT Specs: Approx 500 GiB hard drive, 8 Gib of ram, i7 processor. Problem: I want to do the simplest partition scheme. My research has led me to something called a Single Root Partition Scheme. I'm assuming this is what I want. Research: So far my research has led me to tutorials to create a boot partition, swap partition, root partition and a home partition. I tried that scheme out but did not like it. Usually when I install a new distro I always choose the option to erase disk and install. Thank you for any assistance in this problem. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 06:46 AM PDT I'm trying to figure out how to do the following. I want to run this command Tue- Sun at 9am 00 09 * * * /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster start This command Tue - Sun at 3pm 00 15 * * * /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster stop And on Mondays I want the command this cluster up from 6am to 6pm So something like 00 06 * * 1 /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster start 00 18 * * 1 /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster stop How do I put these two together in the same cronjob? I'm newish to Linux, so I know I'm close, but some assistance would be appreciated. Is this correct: 00 06 * * 1 /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster start 00 18 * * 1 /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster stop 00 09 * * 2-0 /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster start 00 15 * * 2-0 /home/cohesity/data/aws/cohesity_cluster stop [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 10:27 AM PDT Hello all, I've recently picked up a refurbished thinkpad t430 and it's working great, with one exception- the fan noise is very excessive. Even with mid 40s core temps and doing super light tasks like streaming video the fan runs close to 4000RPM- which gets annoying fast. I totally solved this in windows with the tpfancontrol program. However I'm struggling to do the same with linux. I'm trying to get this script working: https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Fan_control_scripts#Variable_speed_control_scripts(tp-fancontrol), however the program errors out. I suspect the issue is the one mentioned on the page: "There is a bug in the code which causes the script to exit immediately after start with bash version is 4.1.0(7)-release. The problem line is line 356 which returns zero and cause the script to exit if set -e is called, which is unfortunately true. A simple solution is to append a true expression after the command." The error provides no real information but seems consistent with above error, it simply prints the below and closes: 3135 (process ID) old priority 0, new priority -10 > activating watchdog with delay 9 sec >Starting dynamic fan control >Shutting down, switching to automatic fan control My problem is I have very rudimentary understanding of these scripts and I'm not really sure how to "append a true expression after the command", I've already tried simply writing in 'true' after it, but no luck. All told I have no idea how that line is affecting the running of the program so it's hard to know what to do about it. The issue might also be something to do with the fact I have to use the second lot of commands on this page due to access denied response, whilst this script uses the first lot. I've already looked and experimented with shoehorning these into the script and it doesn't seem to make any difference with regards to the error. Thankyou all and much love, Judop [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2018 10:03 AM PDT Not sure if this is the right thread but i'll give it a try I want to try to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu MATE but the only thing that is keeping me from doing it is that if i want to delete the Linux partition and replace GRUB with the windows boot loader, then (i guess that) there is a small possibility of messing things up. So my question is: can i replace GRUB before deleting the linux memory volume, so that i don't have to worry about not being able to enter windows or linux properly? (because i think if i delete GRUB then i can't do so) [link] [comments] |

Every distro fail to install in an Intel D2700MUD Posted: 01 Oct 2018 09:35 AM PDT Hi, I never asked for help online but this time I am desperate. I spent the last 3 days trying to install Ubuntu server 18.04 on this board I purchased (second hand). I wanted to build a NAS but at this point I am stuck . I'll explain what's the problem in hope someone will help me: The board came with 4GB of ram and win7 32bit installed, which boots and runs fine. If I boot any live USB, after pressing enter on "Install Ubuntu server" the screen goes black with the blinking cursor for a couple of seconds, then my monitor goes "no signal" forever. The Pendrive LED blinks for a few seconds then it stops. I tried to install these distros without any luck (always the same problem): - Ubuntu server 18.04 x64 - CentOS x64 - Linux Mint both x32 and x64 - Kubuntu 18.04 x64 What i've also tried: enable/disable UEFI, boot with acpi=off, noapic, nolapic and every parameter displayed in the installer, run without hyper threading, run with only one CPU core, remove one 2GB stick of RAM, change USB port (both front & rear), flash ISO with SUSE imagewriter, Etcher, Rufus. Reading online I saw that this board has a graphic chip that is not great in terms of compatibility, but honestly since I'm going to use it SSH only I don't really care... But could it be that the graphics chip is causing problems? I ran out of ideas and at this point I am frustrated... Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks [link] [comments] |

Question about display scaling and Wayland Posted: 01 Oct 2018 08:18 AM PDT I'm looking to make Linux my daily driver for laptop (specifically Ubuntu Budgie, but would look into other distros if they can solve my issue). Currently, every distro of Linux I've tried has been uncomfortable to use on laptop due to lack of fractional display scaling. On Windows, the default setting is 125% scaling, and that is exactly what I need to achieve with Linux. My current laptop has an Nvidia card, which means no Wayland and thus no fractional scaling. I'm willing to purchase a new laptop with an alternative video card if I can get a satisfactory Linux experience with it. However, I've heard a lot of people say that Wayland is not ready for prime time, that it may never replace X windows, etc. So my question is, what limitations will I face if I use Wayland? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to get a different laptop for this or if Linux may be too limited for my needs either way. [link] [comments] |
