    Home Networking High packet loss

    High packet loss

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:39 PM PDT

    mtr results

I'm experiencing high packet loss at the residence I'm staying at. Results are similar for wireless and wired. My guess is these results suggest the problem is with the gateway router and replacing it may solve it. Am I correct? If not what could it be?

I don't have access to any of the equipment but the ISP claims that they're working on it. What else can I do to analyze the problem from within to find the reason and provide them with results to make thing faster.

My TP-Link N300 is faster than my Netgear C7 Nighthawk. How?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:45 PM PDT

I've spent about 3 hours on this so far, and I can't figure it out. Can someone help?

I've been using an old TP-Link N300. The range was bad, so I figured I'd try out an upgraded Netgear C7 Nighthawk. However, it seems like the speed is much slower. the TP-Link can torrent at 5 MiB/s, but the Netgear only downloads at 400 KiB/s.

Clearly something I'm doing is wrong, right? The C7 should be way better. The difference in speed applies to various devices. I can download a phone app in a second with the N300, but it takes a minute on the C7.

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot? I use Xfinity cable at 250mbps. I didn't play around with any settings. Just plugged it in, activated on the Xfinity site, then connected.

Intel Ethernet NIC built into Asus motherboard giving 10Mbit speeds after Windows 10 boot and other gremlins

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:25 PM PDT

My games PC running Windows 10 has a Asus Maximus viii hero motherboard that has a Intel Ethernet nic built in. I have noticed that file copy speeds from this PC to my Debian linux homeserver PC is stuck at around 10Mbit\Less than 1MB a second. But if I flip the Link Speed setting on the NIC from 1Gbit to Auto Negotiate or from Auto Negotiate to 1Gbit I can then get file copy speeds to the server at the expected 80MB to 100MB a second. I am using the latest Intel Ethernet network drivers that have a driver version date of 02/05/2018. The second problem is that robocopy.exe command line program is very slow at doing a differential backup from my games pc to the debian linux home server. Not matter the file size from a few kb to typically a few MB the file copy time is at least 3 seconds. But if I do a regular windows explorer file copy from games pc to a mapped network drive on the linux server I get fast enough speeds.

I have tried many things to fix this but nothing yet has worked. The games PC has many programs on it including Virtualbox virtual machine, Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 and others. I have uninstalled all the Asus software that often can cause problems because they got outdated by a Windows 10 patch.

If there something I can do to fix the Intel NIC stuck at 10Mbit max transfer speed after Windows 10 has booted. And a fix to get robocopy.exe copying all sizes of files very quickly across the LAN.

New home network - need some help with AP selection

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:36 PM PDT

I took the chance to ditch Comcast and grab gigabit fiber at a good price, but I'm looking for the best way to maximize wifi performance. Current plan looks like:

    Supplied modem --> Reuse TP-Link C2600 router --> Unmanaged POE+ 120W 8 port switch --> 2 APs TBD + wired devices

Currently looking at refurb IAP-315s, used Ruckus unleashed R610s, or Ubiquiti nanoHDs to cover 3 floors and ~3000 sq ft through Cat 5e backhaul. Used vs new doesn't concern me as much as price:performance (all 3 are ~$160/AP)

Does anyone have a preference between these in a mix-and-match network? Also, would the C2600 be fine for basic routing at gigabit speed?

Replacing in-wall Cat 5e between floors

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:47 AM PDT

I've been trying to get my home network set up in a new condo, built in 2018.

There's a Cat 5e line that runs from a closet upstairs to the living room directly downstairs. No big deal, just terminate the ends and connect them, right?

Well, I did that, and my AP and switch are only negotiating a 100 full duplex connection over that in-wall cable, and I've cut and reterminated each end, twice. PoE seems to be working fine over the line, but it won't negotiate a gigabit data connection. When I've tested with other patch cables (which I also terminated), it works perfectly.

So it looks like I can't use all 4 pairs in the cable. I could get a cable tester to confirm which wires are shorting or open, but would that really tell me anything useful? I think I still need to replace the cable.

The termination points are almost directly vertical to each other, so it appears to just be a straight path from upstairs to downstairs, in the wall. I'm wondering whether I can just use the existing Cat 5e cable to fish a new Cat 6 cable through.

Do I need to worry about snagging at any points, or on insulation? Should I be concerned about whether the builder stapled the cables at some point along the way, or whether the existing cable failed because it wasn't properly routed in compliance with minimum bend diameters, etc.? Do I need fish tape for this or can I just directly connect the old cable to the new cable?

Also, could I attempt to fish TWO Cat 6 cables through the same path? I think the Ethernet cable runs along the same route as a coaxial cable, because both ends terminate at the same place as the Ethernet cable. Should I worry about the amount of space available to add a new cable, especially if I'm replacing the existing Cat 5e cable with a stiffer Cat 6 cable?

EDIT: After I picked up a cable tester, I confirmed that the very last wire in one of the keystone jacks didn't seat properly. I was consistently screwing up the last wire in the keystone jack, even after cutting it again and again, and even throwing away the jack and trying a new one. I've done hundreds of male RJ-45 ends, and can do that in my sleep, but I've done less than 10 jacks, so I didn't realize I was doing it half-assed in a way that would fail at a high rate.

I'd still like to replace the cable with Cat 6 if I can, and pull a second cable if I can, but I'm marking this thread solved. Thanks everyone for your help!

Strange issue with remote access on certain ports suddenly but extra weird

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:07 AM PDT

I've noticed all of a sudden that some ports I have forwarded on my router are not working, or at least not properly.

    Two best examples

    1. Router remote access: My router is an ASUS RT-N56U, and is behind a Arris modem from my ISP. The modem sometime ago was placed into bridge mode when all of this worked fine, but I may need help in determining if this has remained in bridge mode... When on my home network, I can access the router admin page fine, but when I am remote, I get zero access. Using a port checking website (from a PC not on the network), it also shows now that port is closed on my router... The next example though makes this stranger...

    2. Remote access to my RaspberryPi: My RPi is running OctoPi image for running OctoPrint (3d Printing Server). Again, when on the network, no issues, but when remote, getting just to the server (which only requires ip:port or URL:port), the page never loads. What is strange though, if I go to the URL for the USB camera's feed (url:port/further/address/info), it actually loads up the camera feed perfectly fine, and the port checking web site even says that port is closed as well...

Edit: For all services involved with the ports not working, I did try both using the domain:port and IP:port and both fail so do not think it is some weird DNS issue with my registrar.

I have a few other services running on my main windows PC (Plex, Emby, Sonarr, etc) and all of them work fine when I am off network as well...

Any idea where to start looking for this strange issue? I usually remote access all these from my mobile, but I used the port checking web site from my work laptop while in the office just to make sure if was coming from a different network than my phone.

How do I add a second router via ethernet to create a new wifi access point?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:15 PM PDT

I have Virgin Fibre 100Mbps, and my router is the Super Hub 3

WiFi coverage in my living room is very poor and I want to extend it as well as create some ethernet ports in the room.

I've looked into WiFi repeaters and Powerline adapters, neither are good options for me.

I'm happy to run an ethernet cable into that room and add another WiFi access point, but i know it's not just as simple as plug and play.

An initial Google search hasn't yielded any ideal results. Any help from the community? Any helpful links or guides would be much appreciated.

How to connect Netgear Ac1900 router behind AT&T BGW-210?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:59 PM PDT

I have AT&T fiber through my apartment but I'm only getting speeds around 300 when I'm paying for 1000. I'm hoping that its just the AT&T Gateway that is garbage so I want to connect my Netgear AC1900 to test it out.

How do I configure the settings in each of them to allow this?

Note: I tried connecting the two via ethernet cable, disabling the 2.4 and 5 wifi signals in the BGW-210, and setting the Passthrough settings on the Ac1900. I was still getting an IP through my AT&T router.

Anybody else configure a router behind the stock AT&T?

    Mesh router recommendations

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:51 PM PDT

I'm switching from FIOS to xfinity cable internet soon, and was thinking of getting a new router. My house is 2 levels about 5000 sq ft total, currently with my old Verizon wireless gateway situated right in the middle of the first floor where there is an open to above family room, essentially equidistant to all four upstairs bedrooms. With this setup, I don't have any dead spots in the house, although in the garage and backyard the signal is iffy.

Now that I'm going back to cable internet and needing a modem + wireless router setup again, I'm thinking of getting the Amplifi HD router, which claims to be good for a 6000 sq ft house by itself, and can be augmented with plug in mesh points later.

So I'm considering buying that. Costco is running a sale soon where you can get the 3 pack Orbi AC3000 for $299, so I'm also considering that. But I'm wondering if that might be overkill as I don't really need 3 of them, and the Amplifi itself is only $135.

I watched this youtube video whose guest "expert" strongly recommended plume for good coverage and Orbi for good speed, and felt the google wireless and Amplifi HD are the worst.

Does it really matter that much though? My connection is only 60 mb/s and there will not be large number of devices connected at once.

My initial feeling is that any mesh router will be far superior to my old netgear router, and I'm inclined to just get the $135 ampifi HD, see how it works, and if necessary, add a mesh point if in the future I want to improve the signal in the garage and the yard (or maybe just the router itself will already give coverage in those areas).

I'd appreciate any advice or opinions from you folks. Thanks in advance!

Using a 2nd router not as an AP, but a guest network router?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:03 AM PDT

    I have an ASUS AC86U and a NETGEAR WNDR3300 with dd-wrt

I need to extend my wireless (with ethernet) into a guest network where people can't interact with my main network and where the guests can't see each other either.

Setting it up as an AP would just connect it to my main network.

Is there any way I can wire it so that all it does is act as an access point that distributes internet without any other network functions?

I see extra routing settings but don't know how to go about it. I'm guessing the 2nd router needs to have its own DHCP and NAT and extra routing options on both routers

What router as my second AP (via ethernet) if I want to maintain my 100Mbps over wifi?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:40 PM PDT

All I want is to maintain my high speeds (100 Mbps) through my second access point. What is the minimum I should spend to do that? What model should I get?

    Orbi and ubnt coexisting?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:09 PM PDT

I have a orbi and ubnt system going and they seem to not have a smooth handoff where the two AP interrupt each other and go back and forth between the access points. They both have the same ssid and pw. Is there anyway we prevent this frequent disconnects? The set up is Orbi router in garage and two satellites in the living room and middle of the house. The ubnt APs are upstairs. They're not in the same channel but it keeps disconnecting.

    Question about subnet mask....

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:50 PM PDT

My ONT (fiber modem) shows the WAN subnet mask as 255.255.252.0. My router is plugged into the ONT. The router subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

Should these match up?? Could this cause issues if they are different like this>?>

Is there such a thing as cut or impact resistant cable?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:59 AM PDT

Title. I live in a pretty small apartment. I would like to wire up my PS4 and Steam Link, which are in the living room, to my router in the bedroom. I get pretty decent wifi, but I've always preferred wired connections. The problem is, I'm in a wheelchair, and I don't have anyone who could really help me wire along the wall or anything, so if I were just to run a cable straight between the two, is there any kind of special cable I could buy that wouldn't break the first time I roll my wheelchair over it?

    Thoughts on RT-AC88U

Static IP Ethernet / LAN connection to Access Point, which device?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:48 PM PDT

My girlfriend is a student and lives in a dorm.
In her room she has got a lan cable which is connected to a router / switch that assigns a static local IP address to the PC / device connected to the other end.
Unfortunately she needs WLAN for her mobile devices, so she is currently using the inbuilt Windows 10 hotspot functionality of her PC.
This allows her to share the wired connection (and therefore "translates" the static IP of her PC) to multiple WLAN devices.

I want to setup a hardware solution, so I was wondering:
Which device I do need to mimic the behaviour of a Windows 10 hotspot?

    To illustrate the situation:

dorm managed switch / router --> ethernet cable (static local IP, not changeable) -> (which device?) -> wifi devices (e.g. phone, tablet, laptop)

Do I need a nat capable device for this problem? If yes, which kind of devices implement nat on a LAN port (instead of the usual wan connection)? Do I need a special router or are there other devices which allow me to solve this problem?

My network is being obstinate and I need some assistance with getting shares properly implemented

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:31 PM PDT

Setup: (2) computers with Win 10 Pro x64 (ver 1803) (Call them Comp A & Comp B) Each have integrated 1GB Intel NIC for Internet connectivity (which works fine on both) Both computers have 10GB Aquantia Gaming NICs installed (latest BIOS and Drivers)and are connected via CAT6A crossover cable

    • Intel NICs use IPs in range of 192.168.1.xxx (DHCP from ER-X)
    • ER-X uses 192.168.1.1
    • Aquantia NICs use IPs in range of 192.168.0.xxx (Static) and are connected via xover cable
    • Both Aquantia NICs jumbo packets are 9014bytes, link speed of 10GB
    • Firewall is OFF on A & B (Private)
    • Both computers use same accountname & password
    • Share permissions are configured the same on both computers' data drives

    Issue:

Comp A can see and copy to/from Comp B, and Comp B can see Comp A on the network... but while Comp B can "see" Comp A on the network, it cannot see any shared folders nor can it access any shared folders on Comp A.

Additionally, when using Comp A to copy files to/from Comp B the copy speed is ~150MB/sec using the Intel NICs through my ER-X.

When using Comp A's Aquantia 10GB crossover connection to Comp B, the copies ~200MB/sec. Far slower than I think they should be.

    Troubleshooting:

    • I've tested my crossover cable at work using our tester, and it's fine. I also purchased one from Amazon
    • I've verified permissions on all shares when I recreated them on each computer
    • I've verified File and Print Sharing is enabled on both
    • I've verified the copy process is occurring from the Aquantia NIC on Comp A to the Aquantia NIC on Comp B via the Performance Tab in Task Manager
    • I've verified Jumbo Packets are set the same on both
    • I've verified "Private Network" settings are the same on both
    • I've blown out all shares and recreated them from scratch
    • I've even used the "reset network" on both and went through all the setups again..

    No joy.

I know I'm overlooking something simple so I would appreciate some fresh ideas on what the possible issue is.

    Spectrum WiFi and Ethernet Issue

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:16 PM PDT

    ISP- Spectrum 200DL 10UL

Modem- Spectrum standard, Ubee i believe 3.1 docsis.

Router- Tested Archer C7 and $170 Nighthawk I don't remember specs.

I use 5ghz typically and got 165-202DL and 10UL with the 3.0 docsis modem consistently for months before they made me change to the 3.1 docsis.

Since getting the new 3.1 docsis modem, I would get 130DL at best almost every time and 10UL. The phone tech said line is good. Tech came to house and said my cable modem was working with 208DL and 10UL and he showed me the results on his device, also, he said it must be my due to my router and cables as to why I can't get 200DL even though I previously was. This was with the TP Link router. I purchased the NightHawk and my results are still the same 130DL and 10UL while testing old cables and brand new ones.

I now have all brand new cables, the new Nighthawk, and today got a new modem from Spectrum and my numbers are still 130DL 10UL.

Also, I bought a 40ft cable and got wired in, and hit around 130DL 10UL as well.

I have tested NAT, DNS, QoS and various other router settings with no improvement.

I called them today and requested to be bumped up to 450DL with the intention of canceling it later but wanted to test it. 250DL is my new max but typically hits around 217DL. Which shows what I already knew, that my equipment is capable of getting 200. I had returned the Nighthawk and went back to the Archer C7 by this point.

You guys have any tips? I'm out of idea and have scoured multiple forums and done every tip I saw.

Edit: Tested with various laptops, cellphones and PS4. 250DL is the max I get wired straight into the modem or router. Remember my new subscription is for 450. I going to downgrade before the next billing period. Did these exact steps before the upgrade and the max is 130DL. Techs say my modem reads it is getting my full speeds.

    Help Please

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:22 PM PDT

So to start, I mainly use my internet speeds for gaming/Netflix/browsing. I pay for Comcast internet and the package speed goes to 175mbps. When I connect directly from my Pc to my modem(w/o using the router just to test speed) I get 198mbps download and 11mbps upload, but when I go modem -> router -> Ethernet to PC, I only get 53mbps upload and 4mbps download. That seems like a huge dropoff, is that normal? I expect a dropoff of course, just don't expect it to be that much. I'm usually lucky to get 70mbps upload when I plug my Ethernet from my Xbox to the router, and it usually comes with a high latency, typically around 70ms. The latency is most annoying but w/e. TIA!

    Edit: I have a Netduma router. https://netduma.com

Simple external drive or Synology NAS?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:17 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I currently have a simple setup at home: R6700 router with 2 TVs on wifi. Now, I would like to find an easy way to be able to stream video files to the TVs. The types of video files are usually x264 mkv at 1080p. Their bit rates are between 20 Mb/s and 40 Mb/s. The big question here is: Would I be able to accomplish this with a simple WD 8TB external or should I go for a Synology NAS? I plan to use the USB 3.0 slot on the router and I'm hoping its able to streaming to TVs fast enough. The only advantage I see for the NAS is the ability to run a torrent client 24/7 and using plex to transcode higher bit rate files. Please let me know more details are needed. Thank you.

Will having an additional wall connection between my modem and router have any significant effect?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:08 PM PDT

Sorry for the noob question. Currently my modem is fixed in a corner room in my basement that is not an ideal position for a router. There are pre-existing cat 6 wall ports that lead to an adjacent room that would work much better. My question is, would this set-up impact my network significantly: modem -> cat 6 to wall port -> cat 6 inside wall from wall port to wall port -> cat 6 from wall port to router.

    MoCA Question

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:57 AM PDT

I'm considering adding MoCA but want to make sure I understand it correctly. In my current setup I have two ubiquiti APs that give me pretty good coverage throughout most of the house. However I'd still like to add hard wiring to my office. There is existing coax network that is unused other than the my internet connection. I thought the simplest way to add this would be to connect a MoCA adaptor in the office and then another on the other end of that coax line and plug the ethernet directly into a switch. The switch then connects to a firewall which connects to my modem. Will that work or does MoCA need to connect to the cable modem?

office --- moca adaptor --- coax cable --- moca adaptor--- switch --- firewall --- modem

Also open to suggestions if there is a better way to do this.

Wiring up the house - Use expensive Unifi PoE switch or alternatives?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:10 AM PDT

    Hey all,

Looking for some advice as I order parts for my home networking setup. We'll be getting ethernet routed throughout the house (19 cables) and one Ubiquiti Unifi AP in the hallway next week, all connected to a switch. In addition to the switch, It'll be connected to the USG router.

As only the Unifi AP will require PoE and nothing else, I imagine it would be overkill to buy the Unifi 16 port PoE 150W switch, since it's far more expensive than buying a Unifi 8 port PoE switch and then adding a 16 port standard unmanaged switch onto that? Unless I should get the Unifi 16 port switch and turn all other PoE off?

Link to the switch I'm talking about: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubiquiti-US-16-150W-Port-UniFi-Switch/dp/B01E46ATQ0/

I'm not sure which route will be easiest to go with and don't want to fry any other devices incase they're connected to a PoE port when they don't need it, so would appreciate any advice!
