Please could someone advise which processor is best, I.e. would be better for multitasking, faster, etc, 1.6GHz Quad code or 2.5GHz Dual core?

    Dell delivery worries me.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 04:22 AM PDT

I was basically on the last step to buying the Dell XPS 15, and then I saw the delivery time...

27 days... Nearly a whole month....

I need the laptop within this or next week... Should I buy it refurbished, or from Amazon for a higher price?

Or do I change the laptop choice entirely?

Need a laptop for university in the UK, budget £300, any help much appreciated!

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 01:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    £300, UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best Specs for Money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not hugely important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Probably above or around 14 inches, not too small

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Possibly using Serif Photoplus X6, but this isn't critical

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Won't be using it for gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd just prefer for it to be able to run smoothly

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm a UK student about to go to university, I'll be using the computer for researching topics, occasionally writing essays, editing photos (as above, this isn't crucial) and coding (this is part of my course, unsure which language)

Thanks in advance for any help

Cheapest 2-in-1 laptop for digital drawing

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:14 AM PDT

Anything better than Acer Aspire 5?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 11:07 PM PDT

Is there anything better the Acer Aspire 5, for the low price it costs? My budget is $700, and I'm basically going to use it for some light Inventor or solidworks rendering, probably some physics simulations as well.

I'm asking this because it's been a while since it came out, and maybe there's something better out there as of now. Btw the model I'm asking about is this one:

    Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, GeForce MX150, 8GB RAM Memory, 256GB SSD, E5-576G-5762.

Any suggestions are more than welcome, I don't mind if the screen is not good or big, just want something as powerful and reliable when talking about processing performance.

Need a laptop for a mobile animator/studentf for under $2000 in the US. Bit of a weird situation

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 04:20 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $2000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life (at least 5 hours) is necessary. I'd LIKE a 2-in-1, but I'm pretty sure one doesn't exist for what I want. Decent CPU (Non-U CPU, of course. U-Class CPUs are COMPLETELY useless for anything productivity) and lots of RAM are also necessary (at least 16GB of RAM. Preferably 32GB+)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't really care much. Just, under 10lbs, please

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

The OS is irrelevant, since I'll be wiping regardless. No Macbooks or chromebooks, though, please.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 13 inches, and at least 1080p

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm a Digital Media Production major, so I'll be doing a lot of video/photo editing. I'm also an avid gamer, with a steam library of over 400 titles. Adobe CC is pretty much the focus of my student software. Additionally, I'll be running virtual machines using VMWare Workstation.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

While I'll be using this for gaming, I have an external TB3 enclosure with a GTX 1080 in it that also charges, so framerate determinations on the laptop itself aren't necessary.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like a touchscreen, if possible. Preferably, one with a stylus. I'll be using it docked whenever I need to do most productive things, so a good keyboard or anything aren't strictly necessary, but it should be able to handle some tumbles. That said, I absolutely HAVE to have at least one TB3 x4 port, since I'll be docking to an eGPU for actual work. I'd also love to have a secondary storage bay.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm a programmer, animator, and gamer who's going through college already, and trying to move to a laptop that lets me carry only a little bit around and use it, but not sacrifice anything when I'm sitting at my desk.

I was looking at the HP Spectre x360 15t with Vega graphics, and I like it, but... A few of the compromises make me uncomfortable (like only having one drive).

EDIT: I cleaned up the language and made the post easier to read, as I didn't like how wordy and rambly it was. Still asking for essentially the same thing.=

    Eluktronics anyone? What's the catch

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 07:59 PM PDT

Seeking a powerhouse (as much as I can get) for a budget of $1500. I've extensively been checking out MSI, Asus, Alienware, and Lenovo... and somehow I stumbled upon Eluktronics. Are they as good as they seem? Huge packages, decent customer service, low price?

Ideal: 13-15", 16GB ram+, 1060 for graphics, and as much SSD as I can have. HDD a plus but not necessary.

I am currently eye-catched by the Mech-15 G2 but have concern about the (terrible) battery life. Is depending on a gaming laptop to go off the charger to a coffee shop for a few hours to code completely unrealistic? I'm okay with being plugged in but I would hate for it to instantly die like some stories I hear.

Gosh they have so many models I can't even tell what to pick if I didn't go with the Mech-15.

Looking for a travel buddy that can do 'light' gaming (just DotA 2 with low details)

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:24 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    around 1000 EUR

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    no preferences

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

very important, i will be using it for travelling

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

I will be running windows 10 (i can buy my own license of necessary)

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

i prefer 13" because it makes the laptop smaller and lighter

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I want to run DotA 2 on low details. An integrated UHD 620/630 is enough for that.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    DotA 2 at low settings

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good keyboard, reliable build quality, 1x USB Type C, finger print would be nice but not a must-have. I do NOT want an optical drive

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I want a small ~13" Laptop which i can put in my backpack since i will be travelling a couple of weeks / months. It should be quiet (no GPU fan or something like that). It must have an SSD with at least 256 GB (i prefer 512 OR the option to add an additional SSD). 8 Gigs of ram would be enough for my use-case. In general i am willing to spend a little bit more if i get better specs / build quality. Good battery would be nice but it not the highest priority. Hope that helps :)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux or Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not too small because I heard smaller laptops break easier

Need a powerful laptop for college (Bachler of Arts in Game Design)

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 11:28 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $1500-2500 USD (Higher amounts will take longer for me because of weekly paychecks)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is small concern, best specs and lifespan needed.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Thin but not paper thin, durable to last up to 5 years currently, 4 of which on campus life

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Preferably

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" preferred, but fine with 17.3" if I find a thin enough factor and big enough bag

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Any game in today's market comfortably on. Once college begins work on writing/coding and game development

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to be able to run any modern title at 60-144fps (being a 144hrz display), at a reasonable high or medium setting. Highly prefer 1080p for now. I plan on playing Arma 3, Monster Hunter World, and The Witcher 3.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable quality, at least 3 USB ports (for headset, mouse and keyboard).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am looking for a major replacement of my old 8 year desktop. Next year I plan on attending Digipen Institute, so a laptop will be essential for me and my life there. But for now this laptop is gaming first until school. I don't want the top specs, and shooting for a GTX 1070 at least. 1060 slightly doesn't fit my needs. I am not that "big" on RGB lighting, but if there is lighting (yes I'm nitpicking), i want it to be a color I enjoy, such as blue, no orange or red please. I have browsed Xotic PC and found I'm interested in either the Sager NP8954, or the Asus Rog Scar II, both within the price range, but not sure about their overall survivability, as I sometimes hear sketchy things about Sager as a whole.

Two Swift 3 models, which one?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 04:40 AM PDT

Hi guys. I posted yesterday and received some good advice, and I have pretty much narrowed down my choice to the Swift 3.

I have found two different models, I believe the older model is the one with better specs?

    New model: http://www.argos.co.uk/product/8155012

    Old model: http://www.argos.co.uk/product/7451322

It seems that it's quite hard to find laptops in the UK, but these two are reviewed very highly so seem like good choices.

The first one is the new model I believe as it has the smaller bezel, bigger screen and 8th Gen processor.

The older one has 7th Gen processor but a proper dedicated graphics card as well.

The old model would run games miles better but the newer one would be better for general tasks due to the 8th Gen processor, am I correct about this?

The other obvious advantage is price as one is massively cheaper than the other

I may be wrong but I also believe the new model has a better screen as it states it's an IPS screen?

I will be using it for light gaming (Oldschool RuneScape, strategy games like Civ5 and mount and blade) and I'm not fussy about graphics settings, I mostly game on my PS4 now.

I'm trying to buy from Argos as they offer no interest on monthly payments with my card for up to 12 months. Other websites have more choice but I'd have to pay all at once, which is something I can do but would prefer not to.

    Thanks for any help

Looking for a laptop which will help me through my Master's and potential PhD work in Physical Sciences

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 04:31 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My total budget is around £1000, but I'm willing to go a little higher if it gets me what I need or spend less if it's not necessary to go so high. I'll be buying in the UK.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A 2 in 1 isn't necessary if the laptop has a touchscreen or someway of directly annotating documents. I'm looking for good battery life and good specs. I need something which will be useful to annotate notes in lectures but also produce presentations, reports etc. for my Master's and PhD work.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, my current laptop is a brick.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 is a must due to some software but the ability to dualboot a Linux distro is desirable

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A but decent quality would be preferred.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The laptop will be mostly to be able to work on scientific data, reports and presentations, so being able to produce graphs from large data sets, run photo and graphics softwares (inkscape, photoshop) with high quality, low compression microscope photos and also run and produce graphics heavy presentations smoothly is a must. None of this my current laptop can do (Toshiba Satellite Pro)!

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Being able to run something like CS-GO at a playable frame rate (Say 30FPS) and medium settings would be an added bonus but by no means a must. I'm just a casual gamer, I'm no PC Master Race!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality is probably my biggest factor as I want longevity particularly for my budget. Touchscreen would also be desirable but not essential.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I've said I'm looking to make a decent investment into a laptop for my university work, my current laptop is almost unable to do what I need it to do and with the investment I'm looking at something which will be with me for the foreseeable future.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Need a new laptop for daily college use and streaming

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 07:31 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

$1000 with about $200 wiggle room

    USD

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Not super interested in a 2 in one

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Not something ridiculously heavy but a bit of weight is fine.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

My last laptop was a MAC. I enjoyed it but want something with more versatility like Windows.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13-15"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I stream occasionally using an Elgato H60 so definitely something powerful enough to handle it and not drop frames. Also I record and edit Podcasts.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I mostly play on console but once and awhile play MMOs or simple games like Stardew Valley.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I'm in college so a comfortable keyboard for writing papers would be great. Multiple USBs and an Ethernet port is a must. And reliability I want it to at least last me 5 years.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'm finishing up college so the laptop will be mostly used for Microsoft word and watching videos online day to day. I stream on and off but its not a daily occurrence. Like I said I would like to computer to last at least 5 years (thats been my magic number with laptops) but its ok if the technology ages in that time period. I am eventually going to get a powerful desktop.

Thank you so much for the help. Any additional questions are welcome.

Looking for a new laptop before this one dies

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 10:44 PM PDT

Hello potential readers and commenters. I'm looking to replace my current laptop, an Hp Envy m6 Notebook, with something more powerful and just generally new. I mostly use my laptop for gaming, followed by general internet usage like video streaming (read: anime, youtube, twitch) and trailed by writing. Nothing too fancy.

**Total budget and country of purchase:**

I suppose I would be willing to cap (taxes and coverage and such) somewhere around $2k, but I'd preferably like to stay (a good bit) lower. My current laptop I believe was somewhere around $699 (definitely under $1000) before taxes and coverage and such. I'm located in the U.S.

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Performance would probably be a higher factor as I'm not one to unplug my laptop often if it's in continuous use.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Pretty much zero percent. I don't travel a lot.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

My base OS was Windows 8 and I only ever went to 8.1 because I didn't like how 10 looked. I suppose staying with Windows would be the most preferable but I'm open to suggestions. Maybe Chrome.

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

No particular preference. Current screen size is something like 7.5x13.5, so something the same or larger would probably be best.

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Pretty just gaming and general internet usage.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I mostly play modded Skyrim, which my current laptop used be run decently smooth on high setting as a default, but has recently (about two years ago, i guess that's not recent) started to drop off. I'd also like to be able to run my modded Fall Out 4 better than current (which is to say poorly).

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Nothing in particular. I suppose "shallow keys", as in not big-ol-clunkin-click-clakers, but otherwise it's not something I think about much. The Windows 8.1 update killed my fingerprint's effectiveness so now I hardly ever use it except to open the laptop.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Pretty much open to any suggestions as far as brand or model as long as it isn't Apple related. Never really been able to use other people Macbooks so I'd rather not put myself through that of my own volition. That being said I am a complete computer noob. I picked this one out at Best Buy circa 2012-13 and I've never poked around since.

Looking for uncomplicated, ultraportable laptop with good build quality for $700-$1000 [Programming/College Use]

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 02:31 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Sweet spot is $700-$1000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Great battery life, aluminum build quality, 2-in-1 optional don't care.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very. Ideally looking for something in 3-4 lb range, less is better.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

~15.6 but it's not too important

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programming, including running VMs, compiling in Visual Studio, etc.
Multiple Chrome tabs open all day every day
    No gaming requirements

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Nope

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable, sturdy, preferably metal aluminum build quality is a big plus. A good keyboard, touchpad, finger-print reader are all nice things I would like. A nice matte screen would be nice too. Don't need a touch screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've tried both the high and low end of laptops and want something nice that will last me a while as a daily driver, taken everyday to class in a backpack. I've used an Acer Aspire E15 (loved it, but would like better build quality and maybe some nicer specs) and a Dell XPS 15 (very nice but too many bugs for the price, felt nervous carrying such an expensive piece of equipment around.

Looking for a new daily driver that I can easily take to class everyday and will last me a few years through college without breaking the bank! Not a gamer, just a CS student looking to do some coding and web browsing at the same time.

Need Help Finding A Laptop Simply For Comp Sci Degree Work [Under 15in., Under 1,000 USD]

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 03:49 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    Under 1,000 USD.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

A battery life of at least 6 hours with the best specs for the money.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

I don't mind the thickness or weight as long as it isn't too notable.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    Under 15 inches.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I would mostly only be using this computer for programming/coding, schoolwork, and the occasional Netflix/Youtube. My class has me using Netbeans at the moment.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    N/A.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

SSD, at least 8 GB, good keyboard, reliable build quality, good brightness (doesn't have to be blinding though).

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I honestly don't know much about the specs that I'll NEED since I am barely starting the Comp Sci degree plan, so I'm open to every suggestion. I looked into the the Zenbooks, but I don't like how their keyboards indent while typing (at least that's what I saw a lot of in videos/reviews). I don't prefer or mind a laptop that can have its screen pushed all the way back or if it comes with a stylus. I'm mainly focused on it being fast and being able to handle programming workloads. I looked throughout the subreddit and found somewhat similar posts, but once I look into every suggestion listed I usually find something that doesn't tailor to me. So I hope maybe making this post might help. Thanks in advance!

*EDIT: I would also prefer for it to have at least a USB port and perhaps one for an HDMI as well.

USA $2000 Relatively light laptop with multiple drives

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 07:25 PM PDT

Budget: up to $2K USD Requirements: 15.6in Screen, 16GB+ RAM, SSD and a traditional drive, less than 5 pounds, GTX 1050m or better, Preferably thin and decent build quality. I can swap drives/add ram myself as long there is space.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA; up to $2000 but obviously doesn't have to be that much

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't like touch screens, don't really care about battery life because anything with a decent GPU never has it

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important. Currently have MSI G60 and don't want anything heavier or larger than that. So less that 5lbs and relatively thin

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Moderate gaming, lots of photo editing, some light video editing. Prefer something with a 1050 or better. 16GB of RAM or more is required.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality and decent keyboard are both important, barely use the touchpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have a MSI G60 and am quite pleased with it, well that was until the screen gave out, so I'm looking for something somewhat similar, only with newer hardware.
