Looking for a nice schoolwork computer/internet and Netflix machine under $750

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:39 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is $750, and I'm in the US. I would definitely not mind spending less than that though.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is important to me - however after living with my last computer for so long, anything that gets more than say 4 hours would seem like a beautiful miracle to me. I'd also like to get specs as good as I can for what I'm spending.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness is not important. Weight is - I don't want anything over 4 pounds.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd just prefer it not be huge.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be using RPG Maker, and doing a little bit of photo editing/video editing. As for gaming - I wouldn't be playing much of anything all that taxing. Old JRPGS from steam, a couple of indie games, some visual novels.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I think the flashiest thing I want to be able to play is probably final fantasy VII. Which shouldn't be a problem.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard is a must. I DO NOT WANT a touchscreen. Something that doesn't overheat easily would be nice. Having a nice camera + mic on the computer would be a plus but it's not necessary.

What budget gaming laptop should I consider buying at the range of $800?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:11 AM PDT

I've seen couple of options like the Acer nitro 5, Dell G3 15, Legion Y530, Asus VivoBook Pro 17 and lastly Asus TUF FX504GD. I've also seen a lot of reviews of these laptop on YouTube and all of them have some kind of a downside, but consider its pricing it's expected and that's why it's hard for me to choose one...help would be appreciated. Also important to have GTX 1050 with 4gb vram and i5 or i7 7th generation or newer.

Looking for a gaming laptop with a high refresh rate screen and at least a GTX 1060 ($2300 USD, USA)

    Posted: 11 Sep 2018 08:16 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2300 USD, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Performance and future proof.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness isn't so important as weight is as I'll be using one laptop for college as well as gaming.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" is preferable but 17.3" is acceptable
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming is probably what it would be used for most though I do intend to go into engineering in college so programs like Solidworks and AutoCAD are likely to be used on here as well.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm a fan of strategy games like the Total War series as well as Paradox's grand strategy games like Stellaris and EU4. I have a few friends who play games like Warframe (which I know nothing about as of right now so I can't say anything about its graphics), ARK survival evolved, and PUBG. I also like World of Tanks and War Thunder. I would like to play these games near high or better. 60 FPS minimum is preferable.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A screen that is at least 120Hz, and I suppose build quality would be nice to have.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm unlikely to upgrade this laptop for quite a long time as I'm used to gaming on significantly worse computers, which is why I'm okay with spending $2000 with an absolute maximum of $2300. The games as well as the programs listed are generally very CPU intensive so I was thinking that one of the 8th gen i7s would be very nice to have since I won't be replacing this laptop for a long while. I originally decided on the HP Omen 15 (1060 6GB, i7 8750H for 1200 on Amazon) but figured I could probably find a 120Hz laptop with a 1070 though I don't really know where to begin. I guess what I really want at the end of the day is an i7, 1070, and a 120Hz screen and not much else. Any help is appreciated, and I apologize for any ramblings.

Looking for a solid 13” laptop that will run CAD/Photoshop

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:07 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Looking to spend around $300-$400

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money is preferred.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm going to be carrying it to and from school in my bag so the thinner the better

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly looking for something that will be good for CAD as I am currently in a program where we will be working heavily with it. I'd also like to do some photo editing and I do play video games as well occasionally but they're mostly smaller indies that aren't too hardware intense.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing specific

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking at the Acer Aspire E15, and it would be perfect if it were a smaller screen size. I'd like to be as close as possible to it as I can get. Unless of course it's going to be crap at running CAD, which it very well could be I haven't heard anyone specifically say it would do well with programs such as that.

Picking a laptop for low-medium gaming and university

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:53 AM PDT

Hello, in 2 weeks i start going to the university and i will need a laptop for programming and some gaming on the side (i have a desktop that i will use for actual gaming). Weight is not that important for me as i will carry it in a backpack and i'm used to much heavier stuff. In my budget i found a few that match my interests but i'm unsure which one would be the best buy.

University wise i will use it for code-writing in C and maybe java, and after the first 2 years i will start doing graphic design, renders and 3D Programming (+ the usual files reading for the courses, browsing, movies etc)

Gaming wise i want it to be able to run Overwatch, Rainbow 6 Siege, Guild Wars 2 and the like at a smooth frame-rate on at least medium details (but without fancy stuff as shadows or reflections if needed to push the frame-rate) .

As such i found in my country the following models:

MSI GF63 8RC: i7-8750h; 1TB hdd; GTX 1050 4GB; 15,6" screen ; 8GB Ram (atm this one is the one that i find the most appealing because it's on the same price range as the other laptops but with a more powerful cpu that is unlikely to not handle anything i will throw at it and also the lightest with a weight of 1,86 kgs; my only concern on this is the cooling as it has only one fan, with one pipe for gpu and 2 for the cpu, also i found some sites saying that the ram isn't upgrade-able )

Acer Helios 300: i5-8300h: 1TB hdd: GTX 1050Ti 4GB; 17.3" screen: 8GB Ram (this one is the only 17" i could find in my budget, and only because it is on a sale right now, but as with the MSI, i'm unsure about the cooling, 2 fans, but on the same side with 2 shared heatpipes between gpu and cpu and one more heat-pipe for the gpu, i found people on forums undervolting the cpu to resolve this but i would rather not have to do that for a brand new laptop)

Lenovo Legion y530: i5-8300h; 1TB hdd; GTX 1050Ti 4GB; 15,6" screen; 8GB Ram (didn't find many negatives about this one and at the moment it is my safest option, but i did find people having problem with the charger)

Acer Nitro 5: i5-8300h; 1TB hdd; GTX 1050Ti 4GB; 15,6" screen; 8GB Ram (some concerns with the cooling here)

Dell Inspiron 7577: i5-7300h; 1TB hdd + 8GB SSH; GTX 1050 4GB; 15,6" screen; 8GB Ram (an old model, but i did include it as i saw people praising it's construction quality and at the moment it's on sale here, bringing it in my budget range)

My main concern with all of those is build quality and cooling as i know i can't expect huge gaming performance so aside the listed games and maybe one rpg from time to time i won't over-load it with games, but i plan to use the one i buy for a veeeery long time with at most an ssd purchase when i give in to the loading times and ram upgrade eventually.

I am not looking for other models, i appreciate it, but i can only really get a laptop from my country and those are the only ones i found at a decent price for what they offer

How do I upgrade my laptop's battery and storage to an SSD? What tools do I need? (Asus n550jk)

I also want to upgrade the HDD to an SSD by either replacing it or taking out the optical drive.

I don't know how to do either, or what supplies I will need.

Help, MSI GS65 or Dell XPS 15 (9570)

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:55 AM PDT

I'm in need for a new laptop at the moment. I need a good looking, powerful, acceptable in weight and thickness and great build quality. My search has so far come down to two options, (Recommend any others that fit my list though) the Dell XPS 15 9570 and the MSI GS65. I really enjoy the designs, although prefer the Dells more then the MSI, although the MSI has better performance for the price. The things that I will be doing are some game design, programming (Mostly web design), photo editing, some gaming and school work, nothing too intensive though. I would very much appreciate some recommendations from any of you willing to help, thanks!

    Need new ultrabook/workstation for university/work

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:03 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm graduating from university (IT field) this year and since my pc is giving up, i'll need a new one. I thought of getting a laptop since I often meet up for projects or have to read at the university.

Generally I'm not a laptop guy, but I'm willing to spend more in order to get a better and lasting system. This includes:

    - being well-built (aluminum) as well as sturdy

    - if possible, lightweight (2.2kg/4.6lbs)

    - 1080p screen & ips

    - high specs (i7 8750h), ram/ssd/gpu not important since I can upgrade ram/ssd and I don't really game (maybe dota sometimes)

    - as low heat emissions as possible (I've noticed that ultrabooks with the new i7 tend to overheat and throttle easily)- other specs are not really significant since I primarily need the laptop for programming (alot of vm's, heavy ide's etc..) as well as casual stuff (web-browsing, movies, ets).

    - my budget is 2000euro or ~2500usd (not strictly).

    - also I'll have a cooling pad for using the laptop at home.

After a lot of research, I ended with the below list (feel free to suggest more)

    - Dell XPS 15 9570 (i7 8750H)

    - Razer Blade 15 2018 (i7 8750H)- Asus Zenbook Pro 2018 (i7 8750H)- MSI GS63 Stealth 8RE (i7 8750H)

Any suggestions or personal experience is welcome. I'm really confused about what is best for my needs. Especially since I hate heating pc's or loud fans.. plz send nudes help.

    *Edit: Preferably 15.6 inch

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Future proof for games, being able to run all games at the moment with best settings. Looking forward to cyberpunk 2077 with best graphics also.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Upcoming cyberpunk 2077, 60+ FPS and best setting available.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Would be cool if there is anything extra, but I would like best of the best

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I have built an Alienware R5 with the best specs, still under $7000, can we do any better?

I am helpless since I have had a MacBook Pro for the past 10 years and I loved it! I don't know ANYTHING about laptops and I am not sure how well build etc. the MacBooks today are. I only know they are expensive.

What do you People think? Are they still worth their money? Should I dare buy the 15'' and is there a chance it will last as long as my old one?

Is there anything else you would recommend?

    Is this a worthwhile upgrade?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2018 06:24 PM PDT

I've been looking around for the past week and a half, trying to possibly find a laptop to serve as an upgrade for my current one (my original post can be found here). My main concern is longevity and futureproofing, I hope that a laptop like this can be able to play AAA games for a while (at least 3 years on medium to high settings)

if you guys know of anything that can supersede this laptop (within reason of course; my max budget is $1500.00 USD) feel free to let me know!

I was wondering if this laptop is good for school, note taking, essays, homework and light programming. This is the 4gb, 64gb version. Thank you :)
