Does anyone know how to change the expected hash of a KnownDLL or just bypass the KnownDLL check altogether? I’m getting bug check c000021a when replacing Shell32.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 03:07 PM PDT

I'm trying to replace shell32.dll (experimenting with the watermark) however when I replace the shell32 offline with windows pe/windows re l get bug check c000021a (The error is Verification of a KnownDLL failed, status c0000428 (Digital signature can't be verified)) and it's a hash mismatch. Is there any way to add the new hash to the KnownDLL hash list or any way to skip/bypass the KnownDLL hash check completely?

EDIT: I don't mean spoof the hash, I mean change the expected hash in the registry to match the new computed hash, and/or skip the check altogether

Can I run windows updates for Windows 7 without my pc auto-upgrading to Windows 10?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 11:42 AM PDT

I dont want Windows 10 installed on my pc. I have 7 and I'm happy with it (dont like 10)

I stopped updating windows when they had that "if you have win7 you automatically upgrade to w10 for free" shite. I know it was for a year or so but since I kept Win7 without any updates (except a few security ones).

Can I run windows update without worrying about it? Last thing I want is an update screwing my computer or giving me ads to upgrade to 10.

Creating a USB Bootable installer for 1709?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 06:23 PM PDT

I'm on 1803 and very unhappy with all the issues it currently has for me. I'd like to go back to 1709 but I am long since past the point of rolling back the easy way. I need to acquire the ISO for it and somehow convert it to a bootable USB media. Any tips on where to start? Thanks very much.

    3-Factor Authentication

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 04:36 PM PDT

I have a workstation at home that I have secured but I need three factor authentication if possible. I'm already following best practices in terms of Windows security. I've locked down the hidden super-admin account and disabled access to it, I have a standard admin account that is fully locked down and only used for updating, my work is spread across three separate standard user accounts and secured using file encryption, I have WDE, I've disabled services I don't need, and so on.

I could easily do a two-factor authentication. But, if possible, I want to do three-factor. Username/Password+Smartcard/USB+Fingerprint

How would I go about this?

Windows Built In Remote Desktop is amazing because it makes a phone or tablet function like a Windows device, Is there any third party remote app that supports touch like that?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 03:19 AM PDT

The gestures work fine, it even resizes Windows to the current screen format, it's completely like using a Windows tablet, I have been using it so much lately with my Android tablet and it's just great having all my stuff the same place.

Like do something on Chrome and continue later, I mean chrome has this anyway but it doesn't sync cookies, etc.

The big problem here is thought that Windows Remote requires work if you want to use it outside of your own network, you need to use VPN or Port forwarding or something.

Is there any remote app that have all the same features?

Chrome Remote and Team viewer just uses a mouse emulation and isn't the same in any way.

There was an app for windows that would ask you if you want a certain app to send/receive network requests. Do you know anything like this?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 01:09 AM PDT

I'd like to have an app like that and to have all disabled by default. Then I will allow some of the apps to connect. Also should be able to remember my preference.

How can I find clippy in my windows XP Virtual Machine?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 05:18 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking to find clippy (the office assistant) on my windows XP VM- only problem is im finding it really hard to even obtain a trial version of office 2003... does anyone know where I can get a version of office 2003 from, even if its a trial version?

I am relatively inexperienced in the world of virtual machines and I'm only doing this out of my own interest as I've set myself a goal to run XP on my computer and find clippy, and don't want to fail at the last hurdle!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Why is file fragmentation still a thing in Windows 10?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 04:20 AM PDT

I have a number of Windows 10 PC's, all of them have hard disks which are either hundreds of gigabytes large, and some have terabyte drives. None are SSD, and all have hundreds of gigabytes of free space.

If I run a defrag using any number of software, I can see that for example on my 500GB drive, I have 267GB of contiguous free space, but when I read the defrag report, commonly-used and commonly-updated files such as Chrome indexes and Antivirus definitions are split into 300+ fragments when the files are only 900kb in size. Sometimes I see a 120kb file split into 100 fragments. But, with 267GB of contiguous free space, why is this allowed to happen? Surely it would make a lot more sense just to initially write that file into a bigger space with room to grow, as an example. As it is, if I run a defrag analysis (not the actual defrag itself) a month after I ran an actual defrag, there are hundreds of commonly-used small files split into hundreds of fragments each, meaning when I boot my computer and the antivirus loads, it's having to do hundreds of thousands of extra disk reads every time I boot.

My question is, why, in this day and age, am I still finding 900kb files split into 300 fragments? And by that I mean, why is the Windows file placement strategy still seemingly the same as 20 years ago, trying to cram each file into the very first available space and fragmenting it many times along the way to get it into all the next set of tiny spaces? And what can be done about it?

If you Google for "does Linux need defragmenting?", the answer seems to be no, because its filesystem writes files with bigger spaces in between, so when an existing file is updated, it can be appended to within that space without fragmenting the file off into another available space. There are lots of possible file placement strategies, but the NTFS filesystem shipping with Windows 10 - in an era where it's normal to have hard disks of hundreds of gigabytes - is still using the same strategy as when we had 20GB hard disks and space was a premium.

I've tried Googling for the problem and the solution but "Windows file placement strategy" doesn't pop up much. I remember in around the year 2000 O&O Software had some software that hooked into the OS and redirected file writes out to the expanses of free space, as a preventative to the file fragmentation problem, but I can't seem to find anything I can do about it nowadays. Am I the only one that would like this improved? Imagine booting your computer and have your antivirus read its 954 files into memory from just 954 places on disk, instead of from 95,400 places. And the same for everything else that is loaded at boot time.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic in asking this question, I'm just trying to find out why this issue doesn't seem to have been addressed in years.

OneNote App Windows 10 - Working Offline

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:42 AM PDT

    Hello there,

    i got the following problem:

I just bought my Microsoft Surface Pro and was using the OneNote App (not OneNote 2016) to take Notes in my lectures.

I didnt have internet connection, so i was working in Offline Mode.

After i finished my notes i didnt find any button to safe my notebook/notes. So i thought, that they would be saved automatically on the local HDD of the surface so i just closed OneNote and there also wasnt any kind of pop up notification that had anything to do with saving the notes. So far so good i thought to myself and shut down my surface.

Now 2 days later i wanted to open my Notes and take a look at them on the OneNote app but I cant find them anywhere. There arent any notes. Just the basic Presentation of the lecture which was synched with OneDrive the day before the lecture.

Can i get my Notes back somehow or are they deleted completely since I didn sync it with OneDrive before shutting down? Does the OneNot app not save the Notebooks locally on the PC?

The question I have, is I am trying to connect a bluetooth speakers to my Windows 7 os, and the speakers shows up as a bluetooth headset. In Services, it doesn't list speaker, or anything that allows it to receive or play audio. My question is does anyone know how to add a bluetooth service to a device?

Question about backup and restore Windows 7 --> Windows 10

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 04:36 AM PDT

I'm creating a backup of my whole hdd (C:), because I want to make a clear installation of Windows10 on my pc, and I have Windows7.

The question is, ¿can I restore this backup of C:, in Windows10?

I know that W7 and W10 by default they have the same software for backup and restore, but I thought about for example, the folder C:\Windows.

Is it going to change my operating system? Or am I going to have problems?

I thought about in the restore process, maybe I can just restore all but the Windows folder, so maybe that way It's going to be ok

Stop Windows from installing games on Xbox

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 08:08 AM PDT

I just bought Forza 4 this morning so I can preload it and after purchasing it, it also forcibly begins installing it on my Xbox One. I have no intention of playing it on my Xbox One at all yet I can't seem to see a way to stop the store from doing this.

It did the same thing when I downloaded the demo and I had to go cancel it on my Xbox One like I just did for the full game. Is there a way to disable this?
