What’s stopping nVidia from making their own CPUs? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 12:16 AM PDT I'm kinda new into the whole Pc community so if it at a point nVidia did make cpus just let me know. I was just wondering bc I was like hmmm if I really I wanted to I could make a full amd system (ryzen and Radeon graphics cards) and I can't do the same for nVidia [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:09 AM PDT For the last five years, I was stuck with an outdated laptop which didn't let me play any games at all. Finally, I managed to kill its screen so I justified a new PC purchase. I bought the best I could afford with some support from BuildAPC. So here it is people, my first PC build in the last decade. My previous build had a Pentium III 500 Mhz CPU and a Voodoo Banshee 16 MB GPU. So it was a very long break with a few laptops in between. The specs are as follows:
It took me around 4 hours to install the parts but I was stuck at a couple of points for an extended period of time. The IO shield on the motherboard was hell to install and I had enough of it after wasting half an hour to install each pin correctly. I took out my Dremel and cut off all the pins in fury. I was also frustrated because the MOBO did not have wifi capabilities and it cost me an additional 15 USD. The case also did not have an SD card reader which cost another 15 USD. One other problem was the cable management. The PSU was not modular so I had to put in all the cables which I did not use and they took up so much space. I was hoping a cleaner look inside the case but I will have to content with whatever I have. Apart from a couple of minor problems, I managed to make it work at the first try. I'm kind of happy with that. I have already finished playing Battlefield 1 (single player), Resident Evil 7, Spec Ops The Line, Wolfenstein The New Order at ultra settings without any problems. Fallout 4 runs perfectly as well but that's a game with no end. I will play Witcher 3 and Prey soon. I can't wait to see Cyberpunk 2077 and pray that my PC will handle it. Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:09 AM PDT Thanks all - I will probably show him this sub (except the Japanese tentacle comment) and prove it's not just me being greedy! Sorry if this is the wrong place, pcmasterrace didn't seem like the right sub either. .. Short version: In simple terms - true or false, if you put a graphics card into a PC and power it up, anything in the card memory will be wiped and replaced with new data and nobody can steal your bank details. Long version: My friend offered me his old nvidia card because mine stopped working (fan seems like it jammed, card dud). It's in a PC he gave to his dad, who doesn't really need any more than the motherboard's onboard chip. I can follow instructions to build a PC but I don't actually know much about how they work. The problem I have is that his dad won't let go of in until he has "wiped" it so I can't steal his identity, or something like that. I'm about 99.99% positive that's not actually possible with VRAM - since it's volatile and I don't have any liquid nitrogen to hand to do it the CSI way but I also don't want to lie to him and say it's impossible when I might be wrong (equally, he can't wipe it so won't hand it over). Annoyingly, if you google it, lots of answers seems to start with "well, technically...." which isn't what I'm looking for! Is there a plain English way I can put his fears at rest and get back to a PC with a resolution above 800x600? [link] [comments]
Custom 7.9L case with i9 7960X + 1080ti Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:52 AM PDT A couple of weeks ago, I got my first custom case in, designed to have very strong cooling capability, while comfortably fitting in a backpack. At 7.9L, it's about the size of two textbooks. Here's the gallery: https://imgur.com/a/I78J67o It was originally designed to run a mid-range system completely silently. However, I am also testing and investigating the viability of an ultra-portable video editing/rendering rig. This case isn't 100% ideal for it as it is, but it does work quite a bit better than I expected. While the first setup was meant to be silent, this one is completely no-holds barred, in terms of noise level and performance. The CPU was pulled from a rendering rig, and the rest is sort of thrown together with existing parts, so the SSD & memory are a bit below par, but still good enough as placeholders. It consists of:
Just in time to pretend the new nVidia GPU's don't exist. The setup is about as extreme as you'd expect; loud, ugly, hot and power hungry. I do have to apologize for the cabling. Unfortunately with the nature of the setup, there's nowhere to hide it. During nothing but the CPU-Z benchmark, which is lightweight compared to Prime95 and actual video encoding, etc, the system draws a whopping 550W from the wall, past what the PSU is rated for. CoreTemp indicates about 285W for the CPU, which isn't delidded. Nevertheless, the H90 handles it like a champ. It barely touches 90C despite such a brutal load. With the CPU at stock turbo, I have yet to see it go far past 60C. The video card technically does not fit in this case...I had to remove its shroud. I replaced its fans with 2 high performance Delta 92x25mm ones. The fan swap resulted in about 4-5C lower temps and 30MHz or so more on the GPU. Nothing earth-shattering- the stock fans are surprisingly powerful, if not annoying. With the GPU loaded, the system pulls about 415W from the wall. The liquid cooling is annoying to fit, but somehow not as annoying as I expected. Nevertheless, folding it on top of the motherboard like a heatsink isn't ideal. The main goal of the case is to accommodate good heatsinks, like the Cryorig C1 and Raijintek Pallas, but the space needed for them also happens to be sufficient for a 140mm AIO, which is, frankly, leagues above them. Ideally, the radiator would go either where the GPU or PSU are to make routing the tubing easier, though that'd require a redesign. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 02:06 PM PDT I'll try to include as much detail as I can here to see if anyone can give any additional insight as to what might be causing me my issues. My GPU has been crashing for 4-5 months now and just got an RMA from EVGA, but the issues persist. Every game I play crashes in one form or another, some variation of the video card not being detected when I look up error code or diagnostic. Specs are as follows:
(two hard drives and case are from previous build) I put this together about a year ago when I lived out west and had no problems. I moved across the country east to a more humid climate around February. After a month or two, the problems began. I did transport the whole thing in one piece, but had the case on its side for the drive. Since having the issues, I have:
Probably some other things I forgot as well. At this point I'm thinking try and RMA the mobo next?? I really at at my wits end with this and not looking forward to the headache of installing a new mobo entails. Also not sure why the space fan would make a difference, the card never gets above 72 C before crashing. Any advice is appreciated. edit: formatting [link] [comments]
Thinking about upgrading a single part. Budget of $400 Posted: 28 Aug 2018 12:10 PM PDT I have right now an (orginally) dedicated to gaming pc, and I've gotten into streaming and editing recently. I have an i5 8600k, 1070ti and 16GB 2400 ram. I also have a BeQuiet pure rock slim, which is also important. Streaming is mostly fine, it just gets a little heated sometimes, but premiere gets really hot and has crashed once. I think just upgrading my CPU cooler should be enough, as I don't do any demanding things on premiere besides editing my streams (about 1 hour and 30 minute streams) into about 15 minutes worth of content with text and images occasionally on video with no other edits. Any thoughts or suggestions? Also, $400 is my budget if it might be required to upgrade my CPU. [link] [comments]
Building a Linux PC – anything I need to keep in mind? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:51 AM PDT I haven't been a PC since 2006, so all knowledge I have about such things is very outdated. I plan to only run Linux on this PC. Is there anything I need to keep in mind when choosing the parts, or is everything pretty well supported now? In particular, what about CPU fan control? Thanks! Posted: 28 Aug 2018 01:11 PM PDT Hi,my old PC is crashing 24/7 because either my CPU or Mobo is fried.Since I wanted to upgrade it soon anyways I decided to go with a completely new build instead of upgrading. The colorscheme I thought of was black with pink LED. My biggest probem is that I don't know if these components work well together or not. And if my PSU can handle it. Only compatibility issue PCPartPicker mentioned was that my GPU might be too long to use all drive-cages (but I didn't want to use all of them in the first place and put my drives under the PSUshroud) My ideas to take is the following (except the GPU since I'm gonna switch it to the Asus version <- PCPartPicker didn't let me choose asus) PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant What are your thoughts about that PC? Is this a good value i5 8400 mid range ATX mid tower gaming PC? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:40 AM PDT Build Help/Ready: Have you read the sidebar and [rules] Yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. First time building a PC and I would like to play games such as World of Warships and being able to play games such as Cities: Skylines at an acceptable rate even on lower settings. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) Since I have used a i5 3230m laptop with 6gb RAM with no GPU I am used to really low settings and 20-40 fps. Any improvement such as 60fps on any setting (maybe high?) would be nice. (I don't mind playing low settings as long as it is decent if the game is much more demanding) What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Around £700 +- £150 In what country are you purchasing your parts? UK Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Provide any additional details you wish below. The motherboard I chose because the 8400 can't be overclocked and the board seemed to offer enough features for it's value and seemed suitable. Also is the stock fan good enough for the 8400? I'm not sure if temperature will matter that much for the CPU since I've had no experience dealing with stuff before but apparently cooler is better so I thought maybe getting this CPU cooler would be best. Also according to some reviews, the clearance for the CPU cooler is slightly bigger at around 160mm even though it is specified at 156mm so can someone suggest maybe a different cooler just in case it doesn't fit (maybe smaller/cheaper? A little more expensive for a much better one wouldn't be too bad either) The case wasn't on pcpartpicker but it is a Corsair Carbide SPEC-ALPHA (~£50). I also do not know what the GPU will be because I thought I could maybe get away with integrate graphics until a Black Friday sale when the new RTX 2000 series comes out to maybe get a cheaper GPU then. (Looking at something between a GTX 1050-1060) Any advice on a GPU would be really appreciated too. I was also really confused with the SDRAM spec given on the motherboard and the chip so I was wondering if the RAM I have selected really is SDRAM since I can't find that detail anywhere with some of it saying DRAM and other SDRAM etc etc. Some help explaining this would be great. I'm sorry if this section has become a bit long but I'm learning, getting confused and hoping to build my first PC _. Any help would be really appreciated thank you. (P.S. I think everything complies with the rules but the parts list thing seemed a bit of a grey area since I know what range of parts I want (e.g. the graphics card) but not exactly which one) [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:28 AM PDT Lately my 1TB 5400 RPM HDD in my laptop has really been getting on my nerves so I am planning on buying a 500GB SSD to replace it with. I have basically no idea what to do short of the physical installation. [link] [comments]

So my friend wants a low end build Posted: 28 Aug 2018 02:31 PM PDT Low budget. He has a 400 budget, but hes willing to stretch to 450 if he has to. I heard someone on this sub say to buy a used work desktop with an i5 or i3 and throw a gpu and ssd into it, but any reccomendations for builds around the 400-450 price point? He also needs a monitor as well fyi. He said 1080p 60hz would be fine Edit: USD for currency [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 01:18 PM PDT Maybe an odd-ish question but I can't be the first one. I bought a modmic 4.0 to run with my Sennheiser HD558's and all is good. I use it for my living room gaming PC with TV and both the wife and I find it a bit of an unsightly mess to have the tie-wrapped and clipped together cable pair strung across the floor. Anyone have a recommendation on something like a nice cable sleeve that could fit over the 3.5mm ends? I think if I sleeve it and put heatshrink at each end it will look real nice. FYI the HD558's have a 1/4" plug but the cord is removable and the headset end is 3.5mm so easy enough to feed it through I think. [link] [comments]

Can’t activate 144hz. Can only go up to 60hz. Posted: 27 Aug 2018 10:27 PM PDT It has worked for a few years wii out issue. I just moved and after re assembly the options are gone. I have 3 x vg248qe monitors connected via display ports and one via DVI. All connected to an RX480. I am trying to change the settings in the advanced monitor settings under Win display settings. I can inly do 60hz and don't have options to go higher. What could be the problem? SOLVED! Fixed! I had a faulty DP cable connected into main monitor which somehow resulted in me not being able to increase hz on other monitors. I plugged in a good DP cable into the main monitor and now DVI and Main monitor can change ton144 and the one monitor with shitty DP cable is stuck at 60hz. Thanks! Now I want to be able to get to 144FPS at 1440p resolution but I'm not sure if getting a monitor capable of that before upgrading my core components will be a waste of money. Is my current build capable of handling that performance for most of the new games? If so, any recommendations for a good monitor capable of that? I have a soft budget of ~USD 1000. Thanks! 5 year old build - what to upgrade? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 02:39 PM PDT Below is the list of my build that I completed back in August 2013. It's still really great for everyday tasks, casual gaming, and photo editing. However, I'd like to see if there is room for upgrading, especially in the CPU/Mobo or GPU. I haven't been following tech as much as I used to, so I'm admittedly a bit overwhelmed. Any help is appreciated! PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

gtx 1070 reaching 80c-84c under load. big deal? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:21 PM PDT responses are so random online. people are either like "your card can be 200c and it'll be fine" or "my card is at -20c with everything on max in PUBG, your temp is too high". i have a 144hz monitor which may or may not complicate things. i cap my fps but the card runs well enough to get me to 144 easily. i am wondering if maybe i should look into liquid cooling for the sole fact that i have a 144hz monitor as well as a card that apparently runs like it's cooling down hell. i was worried about this, and annoyed. my room is small and i dont have a window or AC. its hot enough as it is. everytime i make a thread on here i comment about how i know i'm stupid and to not be rude but no one listens. im a big nerd but im also a young one (just turned 16), i'm no PC building expert like you people :(. butttt if it makes you hard then go ahead and be rude [link] [comments] |
