This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Gaming Build (~$1500) - Review After One Week of Use

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:02 AM PDT

    Introduction

    https://streamable.com/goar4
    https://imgur.com/a/sTF7kxC
This is a review of my finished PC build with a budget of around $1500 (HKD$12000) solely for gaming. It is my first PC build and I did have fun building it. At the same time, I have encountered some minor problems during the build and I hope I can help other avoid them (avoid the problems or even the parts completely) with this review.

This is going to be a long post by me, a new PC builder, reviewing different parts separately. That is why the next part will be a TL;DR:

    TL;DR

My shortened opinion on the parts, based on how much trouble do they make:

    Type Name My Thoughts
CPU i5-8600K It's good, 4.6GHz at 1.2v stable without much manual settings
Cooler Deepcool CAPTAIN 120 It's fine, my CPU idle temp is high (~40C), load temp is ok (~78C)
Motherboard Asus Prime Z370-A It's good, but the small RGB area cannot be turned off easily when the PC is off
RAM G.Skill Trident Z RGB It's meh, the RAM itself function normally, but the RGB lighting does not always work correctly
SSD Samsung 960 EVO It's good
Video Card Zotac GTX 1080 Mini It's ok, quiet cooler and low load temps (~79C), there is no overclock space, coil whine and unstability will occur if you insist
    Power Supply EVGA G2 650W It's ok
Case Deepcool Baronkase It's bad, cable management is hard, power supply placement is awkward, NOT COMPATIBLE WITH EVERY POWER SUPPLY IF YOU USE A FULL SIZE ATX MOTHERBOARD

You can learn more about the reasoning below when you have time or feel like finishing the whole review.

All but the 1080 Mini is bought from Newegg. The 1080 Mini is bought from Amazon.
The parts from Newegg are in a bundle (#3836433). Sadly I think it is a Hong Kong exclusive bundle.
I like to believe this is a good deal. I mean what can I do now if its not.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ seriously this is better than my local deals

    Individual Part Review

    CPU

I was initially aiming for a ryzen 5 or 7 processor, but the price of them is not really appealing enough for me to trade away the single core performance of an i5. So I opted for the 8600k at last.
You may often see people posting about their CPU reaching high frequency with low voltage, hitting the silicon lottery people may say. Now my CPU is none of that. I attempted 4.8 and 5.0 GHz on my CPU and it is not stable below 1.3 and 1.4v. I don't feel comfortable at that voltage level so I tuned it down to 4.6GHz and stable at 1.2v. I don't see any performance impact because of the underclock beside in benchmarks like Cinebench.

    CPU Cooler

I don't have much expectation for this water cooler since it comes with the case. The idle temperature is high I would say. It is now the hottest of summer in Hong Kong and local temperature is around 32C, my room temperature is maybe a tiny bit higher ( :(Sorry I don't have a thermometer). Idle CPU temp can be 48C max(package temp). I don't know if it is the cooler, airflow, problem with my installation or if its normal for a 4.6GHz overclock.

    Motherboard

I was not given a choice for motherboard since its in a combo but my experience with this board is pretty good. (Note that the RAM slots only open by one side) The BIOS is easy to navigate. You are greeted by a simplified menu at home page and there is a wizard to help you overclock to a maximum of 4.8 GHz. Then of course you can go deeper for the advance menu to mess with clock speed and voltage etc.
I think it offers functions that others do but no more than that. The only issue is the build in RGB area. The back of the top right hand corner of the board has a short 4 RGB light area. They cannot be turned off when shutdown in the ASUS AURA control software (the option is there but it cannot be saved). You can toggle it in BIOS but then you lose control of the RAM lighting (more about that later). This is a little flaw of this otherwise okay motherboard.

    RAM

The RAM works flawlessly at its stated 3200MHz speed (just remember to change to factory XMP profile at BIOS). But I believe the selling point of this series is more than just performance. It is called Trident Z "RGB" for a reason. But the RGB is just unstable. It is said to be ASUS AURA compatible but AURA does not always detect it. Often it is in its default rainbow color mode instead of the mode I have set in ASUS AURA. Little digging shows more people with the same problem. The suggested solutions range from clearing CMOS to RMAing. Really hope ASUS/G.Skill come up with software/firmware update.

    SSD

It's very fast. My motherboard's M.2 slot uses the decoration metal plate as SSD cooler. I don't see the difference in temperature without it though.

    Video Card

I was going to buy a 1070 or 1070 ti, but then this card has it's price drop through $460 at prime day. It's a mini card (~8.3 inches) but I don't really care since I am using a ATX case. Some people call it out for not having a fan stop mode. But this card is extremely silent even without fan stop in my experience. The fans (it's dual-fan btw) runs at ~37% speed at idle and there is no sound at all in a closed case. It keeps really silent under load unless you manually set it to 100% fan speed.

Overclock. This card can't do that. It's just a no. Without any voltage modification, +200MHz hangs the system instantly, +175MHz crashes 5 minutes into a benchmark, and 100~150MHz is still not stable for more than half an hour of gaming. Memory overclock is doable. I do get +500MHz stable. But magic happens when you overclock memory. Clockspeed drops. Performance only decreases when I overclock memory.
Any overclock also cause coil whine. It's not from the fans (as I mentioned the fans stay quiet <~100% speed) but for whatever reason coil whine appears if I apply overclock and run games or loads. Find another 1080 if you intend to overclock.
Also the white LED on the logo cannot be turned off via software. Be aware if you care about the lighting theme of your system a lot.

    Power Supply

Supernova G2 series is by Super Flower so it should be good. Or one week is too short to rate a power supply. All I can say is it has not shutdown or explode on me just yet.
The fan is nearly silent, but there is a stop fan mode (eco mode) if you care.

Unrelated to the product, but from my building experience,

Keep you Power Supply away from any water source, cup of water, plants whatever

I nearly spilled water on my power supply twice (cup of water bottom left). It's not funny if the power supply or even the whole system fries.

    Case

This is why I planned on this review. Visually this case is great, the frame is all metal structure and features tempered glass panel. There is 3 LED zone: front case logo, watercooler flowmeter and watercooler itself. By default the onboard controller controls them together. You will have to buy extra 4-pin RGB header splitter.
To the important part: if you plan on using a mini-ITX or micro-ATX motherboard you can ignore this paragraph since power supply installation will be the same as any other cases. But if you are using a ATX board, be careful about what power supply you are using. Because this case is not high enough, power supply will have to be installed at the top front of the case. The case includes a mount so you can do so and a extension power cable so power cable will go out at the back like normal. The problem is this mount requires the power socket of the power supply to be facing specific direction and my EVGA power supply does not.
It is better explained with pictures.
I end up having to cut the metal mount and buy an extra cable to fit the power supply in so my PC does not look like it's diagnosed with Ectopia Cordis.
So, check your power supply first if you plan on using a ATX board and this case.
As the radiator is pre-installed (and not removable unless you plan to take the case apart), installing the motherboard is difficult.
Also, the tubes between the flowmeter and the radiator make it hard to put CPU/Motherboard power cable through.
After all, I do not recommend this case to new builder as the power supply setup is too awkward and make cable management hard.

    Conclusion

If I were to plan and build this PC again, I will spend more time researching for part compatibility as even bundle sale items can be incompatible.
Building PC is a cool experience, 5/7 will do again when I have the money.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Occasionally my recently built computer (May 2018) will freeze up for somewhere between 5-15 seconds. This has happened with numerous combinations of applications open (Chrome, Spotify, Battle.net/Hearthstone/Overwatch, MTGarena), but also with no applications open and simply navigating or even opening the file explorer.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

My Windows 10 is up to date, and I've disabled the Microsoft Photos app from running in the background as I had noticed it taking up a lot (not 100% though) of disk activity while not in use. Other than that, I've been keeping task manager w/ resource monitor open to try to catch what processes might be causing the issue. I was able to take a screenshot of one of these occurrences (linked below) but it doesn't seem to indicate which (if any) specific process is the cause of the issue.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Upgrading an old PC for family. Casual use only. Don’t know what to do.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:17 AM PDT

    Current specs:

    Processor: intel core2 e8400

    Ram: 4*1gb ddr2

    Mobo: intel q45+ich10do

    GPU: Nvidia quadro nvs 290

    HDD: two 160gb sata?

First of all, even though i have two 160 gb -and the hardware scan found it as well, windows is only displaying one.

Secondly what is the most economical way to upgrade it for casual everyday casual use?

My pc knowledge is limited but i was thinking getting an 60gb SSD for boot drive and two 4gb ddr3 ram for that smooth google chrome experience?

Basically whats the lowest i can spend to make sure light web surfing and document editing is as smooth as possible?

What price point is the sweet spot for a gaming build?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:51 AM PDT

As the title suggests, how much should I spend to get the most bang for my buck?

Ideally I'd like to stay under $1000 (US), peripherals included.

If it helps, here are some of the games I'd like my build to be able to run:

Witcher 3 Overwatch Fallout (old and new) Cyberpunk 2077

Not looking to play games on ultra settings or anything, but I'd like a build that has some longevity for future games.

Thanks in advance to any suggestions!

Build Help: 1080ti and 980 in same rig?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:31 PM PDT

I recently acquired a 1080ti, but previously I was running on 2x 980s in SLI. A buddy bought one of the cards. I didn't want the second one to go to waste, so I throw it in to the pc and dedicated it to PHYSX.

    1. Will this actually help with any load from nvidia PHYSX enabled games?

    2. Are there any compatibility issues this could cause?

Everything seems to be running tip-tip at the moment, but I'd hate for something to break in the long run.

For under $500, how is this build looking for an entry into PC gaming?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:42 PM PDT

I built this in PCPartPicker, under the budget of $500, being powerful enough to run some games at 60fps with correct settings, and most importantly, the ability to upgrade much further along the life of the PC. So hows it look? Any recommendations?

Can someone explain undervolting/overclocking for a noob?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:31 AM PDT

I recently finished my build a couple of weeks ago and am now getting more into learning the more technical side of things like benchmarks and OCing and what not.

A few questions for overclocking would be how does it work exactly. What is the cpu/gpu doing to get an overclock. Do i have to feed it more volts or something? I've read that increasing the power you feed it increases stability at higher clock speeds.

I then came across the concept of undervolting. To my understanding, undervolting is useful because a lot of GPUs/CPUs are fed more than they actually need to achieve advertised stability. Does undervolting then OCing simply give it a better performance boost for "free" in terms of temperatures? But then, if I'm undervolting here, and I want to OC, then how does that work?? My brain is breaking here.

The uncle-signal is lit! I told my 13 yo nephew I'd help him build a computer. $500 - $700, gaming.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:17 PM PDT

EDIT: Thank you for your input! It is so appreciated. I've learned a lot, just by reading your comments. You'll probably hear from me in a few days.

EDIT 2: It hasn't quite sunk in that the CPU I originally picked is old. I think I might finally understand if something like 4 - 8 more people tell me. :p

My experience: Little, but I've been watching youtube. And I've been lurking here, so I know how to apply thermal mayo, etc. Lego maniac. And, heretofore, the cool uncle (though that is potentially at stake here).

What he needs: A computer that will be gaming-relevant for a few years, with some future upgrade room if possible. In particular, he's hoping to run Kerbal Space Program and Fallout 76. He has saved $550 for this project. He's willing to save more. I will likely end up "subsidizing" this project (esp. peripherals) but I... uh... I'd like to do that as little as possible. I said "cool uncle"! Cool is free, baby! [finger guns]

What I need: A plan. I've made an attempt. I think everything is compatible, at least technically. I'm not confident that there isn't some kind of "bottleneck part" here, e.g. "it doesn't matter how good your X is, if your Y is this bad". And I mean, I'm not married to any part on this list. I just wanted to come to the table with something. Ultimately, I'd like to not have to tweak the BIOS very much / at all. Just cause of, y'know, fear.

Bonus question: What is the jerk are this sub's thoughts on PC Building Simulator? Worth clicking around in?

Before I throw this at you, I want you to know that, no matter what it looks like, I gave this an honest try. It's a little over-budget. But maybe a few swaps away from being just right?

Preemptive Thank you all for your help!

    Ryzen 7 1700 or 2700x for gaming

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:41 AM PDT

Pairing one of them with a GTX 1080 for 1080p gaming. If you comment "overkill" then I will ignore you. It's not overkill at all actually. I plan to play games for years to come without upgrading my GPU. I also like high FPS. My question is which should I go for. Right now on amazon.co.uk the Ryzen 7 1700 is £169 and the 2700x is £277. I'm leaning towards the 2700x as apparently memory support is better and stuff like that. Please leave suggestions

This is my current build as of ~4 years ago. I play a lot of rising storm 2 and pub g. They run decent on medium/some high settings, looking to run more towards high/ultra. As i have not been keeping up with parts, what are some components that could seriously need changing? Be honest, willing to drop a few hundred dollars. Any advice is appreciated!

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:55 PM PDT

Hi, planned to use 8gb ram for my first build and a friend told me its not enough. That now its 16gb or higher, i know 16 would be good too but i think the ram don't do that much its more the cpu. Well i kinda know the basics for a pc built, i aint a professional but i mean, i clearly know how to buidl a pc w no problem but for this... i have no idea cuz i don't know how much good computer needs to be to run new game.

How can I remove a windows 7 key from a laptop and use it to activate windows 10?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:04 PM PDT

I dunno if this is the right place, but I've read that you can activate windows 10 with a windows 7 key. If that's true how can I remove the key from a laptop and activate windows 10 with it?

    [Noob question] What is XMP?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:08 AM PDT

I was talking with my friend about video games (specifically overwatch) and how my frames are getting worse in the game. He then asked me if I have XMP enabled because he said that it gave him increased and stable fps after he enabled it. Hes not the type to know much about PCs (I helped him build his PC) so Im not sure if hes right or wrong.

Can someone explain what exactly XMP is and what does it do?

Would you put a Ryzen 2700x with a B450 Aorus motherboard?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:07 AM PDT

Title says it all really, I could save £70 by going for this https://www.ebuyer.com/856070-gigabyte-b450-aorus-pro-am4-ddr4-atx-motherboard-b450-aorus-pro?mkwid=sWA3N2WiH_dc&pcrid=51630194939&pkw=&pmt=&gclid=CjwKCAjwkYDbBRB6EiwAR0T_-vAVJraEyPorW-taaM_w853XU3yUyHAiJfOcXqFQSSQQWUJvjY8r-xoC_pkQAvD_BwE bundle instead of buying a X470 and SSD separately. However is the B450 good enough or should I spend the extra money on a X470?

Questions about the Dell 27" g sync 1440p

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:35 PM PDT

So I have the opportunity to buy a used Dell 27 in g sync 1440p monitor.

First of all I'd like to know if the Dell s2716dg is the only monitor with these specs. Can someone verify that for me?

What are some questions I should be asking so that I dont get ripped off? So far I've asked if the g sync works properly, if there are any dead pixels, and how long they've owned it for.

The person is willing to give it to me for $350. Is this a good price or should I look for a better deal for a new one?
