[Australia, $900] Nice keyboard, sharp 1080p screen, everything else unimportant. Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:44 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $900, Australia. Obviously less is better, $900 is straining me hard. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good screen and keyboard > battery life > specs > weight. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux. I'll install myself but it needs to be compatible. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" - 17". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, nothing intensive like that, just text editing and web browsing. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer to not have a numpad, so my hands can sit comfortably and not need to scootch together. But it's not a dealbreaker. I don't need a touchscreen, optical drive, fingerprint reader, or anything like that. I'm after something to use for programming work. So CPU power isn't a big deal and GPU power is next to irrelevant. I don't need much storage space, even 128 GB would be fine. What I value most is good screen and keyboard quality. A 1920x1080 screen, keys with good travel, a nice layout, Linux compatibility, that's all I really need. submitted by /u/CRUNCHY_LOVE [link] [comments] |

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark: Help me decide between 2 laptops Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:37 AM PDT Greetings & salutations, I'm based in Denmark, where the prizes on hardware is a quite different story than the US. Nevertheless I have narroved my search down to the following 2 laptops, which I'm torn between: Matebook X Pro | i7-8550U |16GB | 512GB |3K display | Price >> 2.335 $ Dell XPS 15 (9570) |i7-8750H|16GB| 512GB |FHD display | Price >> 2.512 $ **My needs: Work, productivity, internet side of things, a lot of open tabs, light gaming (Football Manager 2018). Taken the high prizes into consideration what would you choose? submitted by /u/recaptcha_arabesque [link] [comments] |
Which Laptop best fits these specs? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:19 AM PDT Ok so I know I want I5 8th gen, MX150, 8GB ram, 256gb SSD, other things i would like would be: nice build/design, fingerprint (if possible), backlit keyboard (if possible), low fan noise & good battery life for under £750 (could stretch to 800). I would be using for occasional gaming but mostly browsing and document typing. If this is possible it would be great! submitted by /u/Jaimster08 [link] [comments] |
Web and App Development. 15.6". USA. $800-$1200 Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:49 PM PDT Alright. So at work I was given an old hp probook that is not cutting it. My employers are letting me chose an upgrade. As a web and app developer I need a laptop for programming that has enough processing power to run local servers and lots of simultaneous compiling. Total budget and country of purchase: $1200 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" not important though. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming, MEAN stack, local servers, compiling, text editors, remote desktops, API calls, excel bullshit, outlook, random sexy apps that make life easier, at least 500 chrome tabs, and youtube video of a fat dude that whispers asmr into my ear. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nope Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Naw Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. was thinking about ASUS VivoBook S Full HD but if theres something better let me know. Linux-compatible development machine (13-15 inch, US, up to $1500USD) Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:47 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 0 USD - 1500 USD (in US) Budget is the smallest concern for me, so if this needs to be flexed out a little more, that's fine. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Preferably a balance between battery life and raw performance How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really, As long as a mere mortal can actually wield it's power Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux for sure, but I will be running some VMs of FreeBSD and Haiku and other small OSes through QEMU, so preferably avoid strange keyboard layouts. Might be Gentoo, probably be Arch, maybe be Linux from Scratch if the RAM is below 16GB. Even better if it works with FreeBSD on bare metal, as I might end up moving over one day. I (unfortunately) have to work a lot with Java, so I need as much RAM as I can get. It'll only get worse though. ) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 - 15 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. QEMU, Eclipse, clang, gcc, Chromium, Firefox, valgrind, i3/sway, maybe radare2 for the odd problem I can't debug (i'm aware how strange it is to be debugging with radare) with gdb/lldb. I will probably end up running Blender and GIMP on it for the odd times when I want to do this on the go, but not too much. I may also need to duplicate the whole toolchain for Windows porting (and cross compiling plus testing under WINE). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I may end up developing a game engine on this machine, so something that can work OK (under Windows) with recent titles would be preferable. Whatever 'OK' means is up to you really, since I can say anything much better than 'beyond looking like 2008, but not so much what it has 4 graphics cards and renders a Star Wars scene with real time raytracing.' I only really focus on supporting Linux with developing software since that's the only platform that really matters in the end, but something that in theory works well with all the game benchmarks should do even better under Linux. Just no to Nvidia. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No strange keyboard layouts (preferably exactly the same as an ordinary PC keyboard with the function keys.), something that FreeBSD can work with, and have a sturdy construction for the chassis. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Would prefer to avoid Lenovo (I don't trust them after the BIOS thing), Huawei, Xiaomi, Dell (I don't trust them after their BIOS thing either), plus all four of their customer support has been useless or I've been told that they've been useless, and especially avoid anything with an NVidia GPU. Prefer AMD Polaris or Vega, Prefer to avoid any laptop with goofy RAID controllers (like my XPS 13 9350, which refused to install Linux without nuking the Windows drive), Prefer to avoid needing proprietary drivers for anything since I'll be compiling my own kernel a lot, very much need as much RAM as I can get without breaking budget. I'd like an x86 laptop (not ARM) for obvious reasons (so no chromebooks), but if a RISC-V laptop exists, I'd buy it over whatever else was recommended as long as it's hardware specifications were OK, and would only like an Apple if the thing actually worked with something much closer to the real spirit of UNIX irony intentionally ignored, and their customer support for not their special fork of a research OS from the late 1980s-1990s instead of just keeping everyone's sanity and just using BSD and then proceeded to completely butcher the entire point of having a microkernel, all while retaining the poor performance aspects and beyond horrible driver support also wasn't really bad. Also avoid Microsoft Surface for the same reason (another rant about bad technology is probably unnecessary after going to Wikipedia, seeing 'microkernel' and now understanding why games on Windows are so slow. I know battery is going to hurt a lot with virtualization, but as long as it's over 6 - 8 hours under a reasonable load (under Linux), it's fine with me. I'd like, essentially in order in terms of hardware features - Very good Linux support, prefer no OS preinstalled, but whatever's there is going to be wiped.
- IPS panel with 'passable for gaming' response times. Good colorspace support too.
- AMD graphics, though high-end Intel wouldn't be that bad. Nvidia is an immediate 'nope'.
- A front webcam and good microphone (for going outdoors and capturing samples of nature and stuff for the aforementioned game engine, 720 or 1080p camera, and ok mic quality)
- High core count (for laptop standards, so 4c/4t at least)
- Very good power efficiency
- Good-enough-to-run-a-terminal FreeBSD support
- Lots of RAM
- Upgradable
- Decent NVMe drive (128GB+), or can have one installed
- Touch that works with GNOME, which I might install if it's enables such a thing.
And somewhere in the list, Actually not require a chiller to run I'd also prefer something that could be upgraded, but this is the lowest priority for me. submitted by /u/M3M3S_OF_PrOdUctiOn [link] [comments] |
Portable data processing and media. Possibly 2-in-1? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:08 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: Up to 1200 (but 1000 or less is preferred). In the US.
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery is not so important. I've never had a 2-in-1 and could see myself using it, but I'm conflicted on this.
- How important is weight and thinness to you? Must be portable and light.
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Currently I have a 13.3 and like it. Would like to stay around the same size, possibly 14 would be OK.
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I make scientific figures a lot in photoshop and illustrator. I often open multiple HUGE data files and process/sort them with excel and R. 8GB of RAM and a decent processor are paramount.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Must have an SSD of at least 256 GB. Needs to have HDMI out. SD card reader would be nice. Ideally would have at least one USB-C and one USB-A.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current computer is LOUD AND HOT. I would like my next machine to be neither of these things (I get that if I am really crunching through stuff it will warm up, but my current one just whines constantly). I will be using this as a travel machine, and doing work at conferences and whatnot. If it also doubled as a travel media-machine (decent speakers, flexible hinge or a 2-in-1) that would also be ideal. The 2-in-1 thing is what I'm caught up on. I know i can get a cheaper machine without this, but I've never had a decent tablet so I don't know if the feature would be wasted on me.

Laptop for electrical engineering student Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:47 AM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: About 1000-1500€ (as a new, gonna buy a used one most likely so it would cost like 600-900€). Finland.
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is not necessary I think. Good battery life is definitely a must so I can use it during lectures / bus etc.
- How important is weight and thinness to you? It`s a plus but not necessary if I can save money.
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not 100% sure but I guess the sweetspot is 13-15 inches.
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I just started my studies so I am not aware of the all programs we need, lots of programming and such incoming though. I think we need to do some CAD at some point. I have a primary pc for gaming so I can use all the money for the "best performance".
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Check above but maybe some light gaming at max, with moderate quality. I want to highlight that this won`t be used primarily as a gaming laptop at any point.
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? High quality keyboard is a plus as I have to do lots of programming. Good audio input devices and properties are plus as I do some studio work from time to time. Watching also lots of Netflix/educational videos so good screen is a plus.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just looking for best bang for buck- type of computer. I have heard good things about Lenovo Thinkpads but I am unsure about the different models. Thanks for help!

Business Use, Light Gaming, Around $1,000 Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:27 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1000, USA
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money
- How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important. I would like to be able to take it to the library, coffee shops, client visits, etc. Would prefer it to not be heavy and thick. But I can make some sacrifices for more power.
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I run Linux, but will dual boot Windows.
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably 15", but I will entertain the idea of a 17" - I am trying to balance portability with working on the laptop directly with a decent screen size for multimedia work, spreadsheets, etc.
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing, some video editing, maybe some gaming.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to leave my options open, but the most I have played on a PC recently is Starcraft 2, although that could change if I had a capable laptop.
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard and touchpad would be ideal as I will be using the laptop out of the office, without a mouse and full size keyboard. My current trackpad is janky so I want to have a good one.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am finding it hard to balance all of these items, without ending up with a super thick and heavy laptop. I think I need at least 16gb of ram, I routinely hit 12gb on my current laptop (I run a lot of programs at once and have a lot of tabs open). I do some video and photo editing also, so extra ram could be helpful.
Something less flashy than the Predator. I will use it when meeting with clients (although I have toyed with the idea of bringing my super portable Samsung Plus Chromebook). Thanks :) submitted by /u/Crowdit1 [link] [comments] |
2-in-1, 13"-15" with Dedicated Graphics. Canada ($1500 budget) Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:14 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Canada, $1500 (CAD) including stylus + keyboard. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1 is necessary. I'd like to have a dedicated GPU so I could so some light gaming as well. How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferable but as long as it's not too heavy, it's not an issue. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 to 15. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Games below. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60fps for games including Overwatch, Cities Skylines, Fortnite. Not picky about graphics quality. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Besides the 2-in-1 factors, a good build quality is a plus. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'll be using this for taking notes during class (university) but I'd like the versatility of being able to play some basic games. I'm trying to hold on to this laptop for the next 3 years, so I'm looking for something of decent build. I was thinking of this HP Envy x360 (AMD version), but I've some money to spare so I was wondering if anyone has anything better within the price range. submitted by /u/No3Account [link] [comments] |

Laptop for the Souls Games Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:18 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: USA. No real budget. Just looking for something that can run the first two games relatively smoothly. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness don't make too much of a difference for me. I'm going to mainly have the laptop hooked up to my TV so it doesn't matter too much. So long as it gets the job done. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. For the same reason as thinness, no real screen size requirements. If possibly 15.3" or larger would be good for when I'm not just using it for the Souls games, but it isn't a huge issue. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly playing the Souls games or other action games made around Dark Souls 2. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Warriors games, strategy games like the Total War series, Elder Scrolls games, things of that nature. FPS, so long as it is above the 15 I get on my current laptop and runs smoothly and steadily, and doesn't run with the bare minimum graphics for anything, would be ideal. I don't need it to be ultra graphics unless there is a surprisingly affordable option. Just whatever will get the job done sufficiently. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No other necessities. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for a laptop that can run the first two Dark Souls games sufficiently. My current HP pretty much crawls through Dark Souls 1, and getting through Blighttown is a nightmare (more so than usual, if you can even imagine). Dark Souls 2 won't even boot up. I like action games but haven't really been able to play them, so I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to run these kinds of games moderately well. Let me know if you have any suggestions for a laptop that could accomplish this for me. submitted by /u/ThirdtoLastAirbender [link] [comments] |
