First house with voice/data ports. Am I on the right track? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:24 AM PDT Hi, everybody. I've just moved into a ~2500 sqft house (2 floors + basement) and discovered voice/data ports in all the rooms, along with a panel in the basement. I've never worked with one of these before (It's a Leviton voice and data setup), but I believe I can use it to connect devices throughout the house via ethernet. Not sure if it's relevant, but I am savvy with computers and general home electronics/tinkering, but have little-none networking experience (beyond basic router management, IP assignment, etc). I currently have an Asus RT-N66U which is on its last legs. Here is a picture depicting the desired end-state. Looking for a basic sanity check on this layout, and I am also looking for recommendations on a router to place after the modem. The wifi emitter on the main floor should be set as an Access Point, right? Any recommendations there would also be appreciated. Not depicted is my NAS w/ PLEX media server, which is part of the reason I want to attempt wired connectivity. I did buy two 5-port D-Link DGS-105 switches to place on the first and second floor, but haven't opened them yet. Will those be sufficient? Somebody in another thread stated that the DGS-105 did not properly handle jumbo frames, but I haven't found any other statements corroborating that. Should I purchase different switches, instead? In summary: - Does the diagram look OK? - What would you recommend for a wired router in the basement? - What would you recommend for an access point on the first floor? Thank you! Would VoIP be affected by a router that doesn't have any traffic going over it? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:58 PM PDT My parent's house has horrible cell signal strength, so when updating to a new wifi router, I gave them my old wifi router. My mom is now complaining that people say she keeps cutting out when talking on the home phone. I don't see how this can be the case. They have a modem supplied by Spectrum Cable that takes the cable in and outputs to phone and Ethernet. The Ethernet now connects to my old router, which connects to their PC, and supplies wifi. When children/grandchildren aren't around, the only person on wifi would be my dad, whose work cellphone connects. But he hardly uses the cell phone (he will sometimes ask Google a question). They barely touch their PC either, so it shouldn't be using up bandwidth. Trying to convince my mom that she doesn't need to disconnect the router whenever no one is around so she can use the phone. Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:36 PM PDT My Wifi has worked great for years but has been acting really funny as of late... it use to be really, very fast but then it slowed down by alot so I changed my password & downloaded a program that shows all the devices connected to the network. It showed me quite a few devices that were connected at the current time but I couldn't account for them, so I thought somebody may be hacking my internet when I noticed I was getting kicked off And then it was asking for my WiFi password when I tried to get back on (which it never does) but THEN a neighbor said they were all having the same issue. When I tried to connect it would say "Some information has changed & we need your WiFi password" So at first I would type in my password & it would let me online but kick me out periodically. Now it hasn't been accepting my password for the last few hours & I can't get on the Wifi. Unfortunately at this hour I can not contact my ISP but I fully intend to tomorrow. Just wanted to know if anybody knew of a fix for this tonight or if somebody might know just what the heck is going on around here lately. I ran multiple virus scans, rootkits ect... nothing Any help would be appreciated thanks so much [link] [comments] |
Replacing coax with Ethernet help Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:47 PM PDT My parents recently moved into a newly built house. When they moved in they found out that when they had requested that Ethernet ports be put into the bedrooms they instead installed coax cables instead. Now we're all wondering what the best course of action is for dealing with the issue. What we'd prefer would be to be able to replace the ports entirely with the Ethernet ports. Is there a way to convert and rewire the face plates or does the wiring have to be completely redone? Or is there an adapter of some sort that could be used? I'm rather inexperienced with this subject and haven't been able to find a solution online. [link] [comments] |
Router performance for home with 20 people Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:05 PM PDT Hi again, I've made multiple posts in here over the last few weeks all revolving around this problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/8z5v8m/new_home_network_with_gigabit_internet_what/ I think I am very close to my solution, but one lingering question remains. Would I be better off with a WiFi router (Netgear R7000P or TP-Link Archer C3150) + 2 APs, or a wired router (EdgeRouter-X or Lite) + 3 APs. I need good wifi connection on all 3 floors of the house, so either 3 APs or 2 APs and a WiFi router as an AP would take care of that. I just don't know if one of the EdgeRouters would seriously upgrade my entire network's performance over one of the WiFi routers. The thing to keep in mind is just the large number of users, each with potentially multiple devices trying to use the network at any given time. Anyway, hopefully this is the last post I will need to make in here, but thanks for all your help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:22 PM PDT Hi guys and gals! I am in need of assistance. I would like to purchase a new router. I am a spectrum user and we pay the $5 rental fee and I think it would be a wise choice to invest in our own. I live in a 4 person household and we really only need 4ish Ethernet ports, we have a 30Mb/s connection also (hopefully upgrading soonish). I'm just curious as to what I should look for in a good router. I would like to be able to do port forwarding and now have to change ISP. Also if there are any quality options available through Best Buy that would be an even better help (discount through friends). Thank you for any assistance! [link] [comments] |
Traffic through WAN: Packet loss, Traffic trough VPN-tunnel: No packet loss. Help me find the cause! Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:10 AM PDT Hi, I have had problem witch major packet loss for weeks now, my network did not have this problem before. This makes browsing the internet very slow when in occurs. Major packet loss only happens toward the evening, and a reboot of the LTE-modem fixes it. A quick overview of my network, I use a Huawei B525 LTE-modem, this can be set to bridge mode but the problem still exist if using that option. As a router I have a pfsense-box which I've set up using different vlans etc. Here's a diagram of my current network: Please notice that there is a site-site OpenVPN-connection between pfsense and the openvpn-server, but only traffic going to site B's LAN is going through the VPN-tunnel. All internet-traffic does not go through the VPN-tunnel. Site B is located at an entirely different city, thus the VPN-traffic needs to pass internet. I've noticed that pinging 8.8.8.8 yields packet loss on all devices but not the LTE-modem. But even if I can't ping 8.8.8.8 I can always ping the LAN at site B with no packet loss. Here's a diagram of where there occurs packet loss and not: Diagram of packet loss/no packet loss I recently upgraded my network to pfsense and ubiquiti, before my network used to look like this: The old network configuration did not use any vlan or and was rather simple compared to the pfsense-setup. Even with the old network configuration I had problem with major packet loss. It's easy to understand the problem probably is caused by the LTE-modem since it can always ping google while the other can't when I have packet loss. Rebooting the LTE-modem eliminates the major packet loss too. What bugs me about this is:
I've setup a raspberry pi to ping 8.8.8.8 and site B's Lan every minute. And there seems to be short periods (<1min) of packet loss during the day, these are usually 1-2 a day. Then toward the evening there's a longer period of packet loss making internet browsing really slow. tl;dr: I have packet loss when traffic is going through WAN but if it passes the VPN-tunnel there is no loss. Fios Poor signal: buy an extender, a repeater or an access point? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:55 AM PDT The Fios router (Quantum Gateway, which I paid $150 to buy from Verizon) is placed in the living room of a ~1100 sq ft. apartment. But the signal in the bedrooms is pretty weak (like 2-3 bars). I'm thinking of using something like this: NETGEAR AC1200 WiFi Range Extender - Essentials Edition (EX6120-100NAS). My plan is to plug it in on one of the outlets in the living room and hope that it'll help with the low signal. But I read here that it splits the wifi into two networks and that it can have latency issues. I also thought of buying a regular Netgear router (like this AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router) and connect it to the Fios quantum router as a wifi router extension. Has anyone who owns Fios router ever tried this? Does it work well? In general, I'd like to know if there is a below $100 solution for weak wifi signal in my apartment. Thank you in advance for your suggestion! P.S. Verizon sells extender for like $100, but I'm not going to shell out another $100 because their $150 Quantum router is already crap. [link] [comments] |
Rural Wireless - How to Receive Signal From Far Away Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:47 PM PDT Guys, I live in a rural area with no ISP. The local school has fiber and a high speed wireless network. I have permission to access the signal if I buy my own equipment. I'm 2500 feet away from the school. What equipment do I need, please be as specific as possible, to receive the weak signal from that distance and rebroadcast to my home for internet? Please help. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Looking to improve home network; need/want to implement two routers off the same modem Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:39 PM PDT Hey everyone; so, long story short, my wife and I moved in with her parents while we save/build our house, and I'd like to have my router, Netgear R7800, do the routing on a separate network and I'd like to get my PiHole back on the network as well. However; my in-laws have the all-in-one modems from the cable company, less than ideal. The problem is that this modem acts as the MOCA(?) for the TiVO boxes we have, which to my understanding, means this router needs to serve DHCP and DNS. So I can't just turn off DHCP on this box.... For the time being, the R7800 has been in AP mode as it's wireless signal is much stronger and reaches into the bedroom we're staying in. I know enough to be dangerous, but I want to make sure I'm thinking this through and that this will work. Essentially, I want to leave the in-laws modem alone as much as possible; minimal disruption. I want to setup my R7800 as a router, even if it creates a separate network; there's nothing at the in-laws network that I need to communicate with. So, the modem's network is 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0. Can I setup the R7800 on a 10.10.0.0/255.255.0.0 network with DHCP and not run into double NAT issues? Anything else I need to consider? Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Set up bandwith caps by port/IP? Edge Router/Unifi Set up Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:29 PM PDT Hey all, I was wondering if this is something I can do? I see the QoS setting in the EdgeOS which looks to be what I'd want, I just want to make sure it isn't any more complex than that. I just want to make it so when my wife uses Netflix on our Xbone, it doesn't pull 300+ mb of our 400mb internet speed leaving me with scraps on my devices. Damn thing is a bandwidth hog. I thought routers usually have programming to do this sort of limiting on their own, but I could be wrong. I'd like to cap it at maybe 100mb or so, so that the rest could be free elsewhere. Is this what QoS is used for? [link] [comments] |
Which 16 port switch for DS1815+ NAS link aggregation (Australia)? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:21 PM PDT Hi, Looking for a 16 port switch to use with my DS1815+ NAS that supports 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation. https://www.tp-link.com/au/products/details/cat-39_T2600G-18TS.html Is that fine, or are there better options? Budget under AU$300. Going in a cabinet on a shelf, so not rackmount. My proposed setup: https://imgur.com/a/Ua6qIdp I will only be using the link aggregation features of the switch so doesn't need to be very advanced, I would be getting an unmanaged switch normally (and this will be replacing a few 5 port unmanaged switches) Thanks [link] [comments] |
Why would using the network 192.0.0.0/8 cause issues on a LAN? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:38 AM PDT Might be a very basic question, but just kind of confused. I posted this on another sub and people say that it can cause issues because its not a private IP range, can cause communication errors if someone is using that IP range for their public IP. Wouldn't NAT prevent this though? I understand IP classes and CIDR. But if I used this network and everything in my LAN was on the same subnet, why wouldn't this work, considering everything can communicate and NAT is being used for anything going out of the routers WAN port? improving my local file transers over network Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:34 PM PDT HI everyone! first post here! I recently upgraded the cabling between two of my computers to cat6 (built and tested them myself) and connecting them with a gigabit switch. I was getting about 7 mbs file transfer before and I am sad AF to see I am getting the same speeds now. the card on my local machine is a AX88179 -- USB3.0 to 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet Controller. the remote computer is an optiplex 990 with the onboard networking card that says its gigabit as well. What can I do to improve this? [link] [comments] |
DOCSIS 3.1 modem with 3.0 router? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:08 PM PDT Sorry if this is dumb/already answered. I just got gigabit internet and I am buying a new modem and router. I have decided on a modem which will be DOCSIS 3.1 and I am undecided on a router. My question: In general, should the router also be 3.1? Or will 3.0 be compatible? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Adding a second router to existing network want same ssid for both. Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:19 PM PDT So I've run an ethernet cable from my modem to a far room where I am using a belkin n750 db (currently connected through WAN) I had lying around at home. Modem has 2.4 & 5 G network (A) the Belkin has 2.4 & 5 G network (B). I want them to work as the one network so that when I go out of range of one I'm connecting to the other and only ever seeing network (A) as the available WiFi. The Belkin has an access point mode I've tried turning that on and using same IP and subnet mask as the modem. The Belkin network (B) was still present. Should I be using the access point mode in this case or leave the Belkin as it's own router. Would changing the ssid & password of the belkin to the modem do the job? I've tried researching this but can't seem to get my head around it. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Netgear Nighthawk cutting WiFi speeds in half. Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:07 AM PDT A few days ago I decided to take advantage of an amazing offer my ISP had. I had 100mbps download and it was consistent across the board. Hardly went down or dipped on both 2.4 and 5G. I upgraded to 400mbps and the speed is now so slow. 2.4 barely hits 30mbps and the 5G is all over the map. 70-350 in one test most of the time. I reached out to my ISP and they of course blame my equipment. The modem is theirs and the router is mine. I decided to do some troubleshooting of my own and discovered that they may be right in stating my equipment could be the cause. I plugged my laptop directly into my modem and for a consistent speed of 325-350 on multiple tests. I am not really sure wha could be causing the dramatic drop in signal between the modem and router. I tried swapping out the cable, factory reset on the router, I disabled the 20/40 coexistence (I understand that makes me a shitty neighbor now), assigning channels, disabled QoS and I downgraded the firmware. None of this has seemed to help very much at all. Any ideas on how I can get the speeds optimized? [link] [comments] |
There are two DNS server options in my TP-Link Router. Which one should I use? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:09 PM PDT I want to change the DNS server of my TP-Link router. Server Connectivity is blocked when using a wired connection Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:49 PM PDT Hi, I am trying to connect to xbox chat services while playing on my windows 10 PC but have the issue of my Server Connectvity being "blocked". I noticed that this only occurs when I am on a wired connection, and when I use a wireless connection, I am able to connect with a "Moderate" NAT type. I have looked online but haven't been able to find any solutions to this. Does anyone know what I can do to change my network settings so that my wired connection is "open"? Thanks. Problems with internet unless I use vpn. Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:39 PM PDT Last night my internet went out completely and now the only devices that can connect to wifi are those running nordvpn. My Xbox and girlfriends phone will not connect. My xbox is also hardwired. My laptop initially was the only device working then when I used the VPN on my phone my phone would use the internet as well. The modem and router both have all the lights on that indicate it is connected to the internet. Is this a VPN setting or did my ISP block me and my VPN is just letting me get around that? When I go to my router settings it says there is no internet but I am currently using it on my laptop through a vpn. [link] [comments] |

Router with Data Usage Tracking Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:45 PM PDT I'm currently having a dispute with my ISP over inaccurate data metering. I have a linksys EA6400. Was wondering if there is a data usage option for this model. The router logs currently do not show this. If not, does anyone know a cheap router that does? Need something that will track my data for all connected devices and have logs that I can show to my ISP when needed, [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:43 PM PDT Issue 1: Our detached garage has always had problems with wifi. We pay for 100mbs and we would get 1 in the garage. We installed an access point (ASUS EA-N66) to connect to our main WiFi router (Netgear R7000). Now we get 80-90 mbs WiFi when connected to the access point, but only about 10 mbs when connected to the main router. When we turn off our access point the main WiFi (netgear) starts to output 127mbs WiFi. The access point and WiFi router are both on the same ssid and are on the 5g network. The are also on separate channels that are not overlapping. Issue 2: our devices refuse to switch from access point to router automatically. The only way to switch to the stronger signal is to go into airplane mode and back out. We have the access point set to 40% strength and the main router set to 100% their is a small overlap area. Thank you. Sorry if I am not very clear in some parts. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:37 PM PDT Hi, I'm looking for a hardware device that will provide a whole house VPN traffic solution. So my current setup is like this: Virgin media 200mb modem (routing is switched off) -> Google WiFi (router) I think whatever hardware would need to sit between the two of them. Stuff I want it to do: 1) needs to have a VPN client so I can connect it to say nordvpn, or another provider 2) provide encryption for all data (TV ie iplayer, PC's/macs, dishwasher(!)) to the VPN endpoint 3) needs to be able to handle upto 200mb VPN or more. It should use the bandwidth we're paying for really! 4) be easy to use and set up 5) needs to seemlessly allow vpns to our offices (we're employees and need a separate VPN connection to our employers). Stuff I don't want it to do: 1) handle WiFi, Google WiFi does a great job in our house :) I found these potential hardware vpns: TP-LINK TL-R600VPN SafeStream Gigabit Broadband VPN Cable Router ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006TTBYEM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_GBGyBb9EA0B64 ) UBIQUITI Networks Unifi Security Gateway Router https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LV8YZLK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_pNGyBb9DE9124 Zyxel ZyWALL 350 Mbps VPN Firewall, recommended for up to 10 users [USG20-VPN-EU0101F] https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01DGDKNX6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kOGyBb418F304 Linksys LRT214 Business Gigabit Wired VPN Router https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GQATOZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9QGyBbC04EDF4 I don't really understand tbh why some are like £200 and others about £50. Edit: added work vpns to the list of requirements! I'm open to suggestions on anything, and if you have any questions please do ask :) Many thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Ping spikes and packet loss while gaming on Wifi Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:28 PM PDT I understand wifi is not an optimal setup here but it's all I can do for the next month. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do optimize my setup and mitigate these issues. The ping spikes and network drops aren't nearly as severe when I'm not gaming, something about the increased or persistent traffic seems to be causing hiccups. I know for sure the problem is local. My setup is: AT&T uverse (some type of DSL I believe) Arris NVG589 modem/router Z87 pro mobo integrated NIC with coaxial antenna attached (drivers are updated to newest) [Continous Ping While Gaming] during a game of rainbow six siege. This also happens with other games like Dota 2 and any other game I've tried (overwatch, realm royale). You can see there are 2 packet loss instances and several very high ping instances. [Continous Ping while NOT gaming] There are occasional ping spikes but nothing over ~150 and no packet loss. The upload speeds here are insane to me but as I understand it's something about DSL that's common for upload/download to be near symmetrical. Used to work in networking but it's all a bit fuzzy. I have tried turning off wifi scanning using: netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wi-Fi" and it has not helped. [link] [comments] |
