14 GB RAM usage - next to no programs running

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 01:15 PM PDT

So I've got a memory leak of some sort, and no clue how to tackle this. Did some googling, but nothing particularly helpful came up. I've got 16 GB 3000 mhz ram, running newest Windows 10 build. I've ran virus searches, nothing comes up. Thought it might be caused by Chrome or something at first, but uninstalling it didn't help. It doesn't really take up more RAM than normally anyway, as you can see in the screenshot under. I don't really have anything else than games and some basic programs on the PC, and nothing has changed since long before this started happening. I assume it's a registry fuckup or something.

    Screens: https://i.gyazo.com/55ae3ac6d1f4f1cc08e89276d06f68a2.png

Is there any way I can figure out what's eating up so much memory? It seems to kick in after the PC has been running for a while, but it's coming earlier and earlier. I've had the issue for a couple of weeks, and a restart fixes it. It's only started to act up after like 4-5 hours or runtime before though, and now it shows up after 30 minutes.

Do I just reformat? I'd rather not, if I can avoid it.

Edit: malwarebytes found nothing, memory diagnostics test came up clean.

edit 2: I had to reboot the PC for the memory test, so it will take some time before the leak "goes live". Going to bed, will send screencap results later. Thanks for the suggestions for now, everyone. You're doing the lords work.

Left my hard drive in a drawer for 6 months, could I have potentially damaged it?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:30 PM PDT

I gave my spare HDD to my sister to take care of and she left it in her drawer. Only problem is when she took it out I noticed she didn't take the best care of it and there were a few objects lying on top of it, not particularly heavy ones, but that got me a bit worried. I know hard drives are quite easy to damage when they're switched on due to moving parts and whatnot but is it the same case when they're turned off? AFAIK there was nothing that could have caused static damage.

Also, like the idiot that I am, I took my HDD and put it into an anti static bag, but I kind of, 'dropped' it in. It was a fairly long anti static bag as it came with my graphics card so I'm scared that the impact from that may have damaged my Hard drive, I've always read that hard drives are quite delicate so that's why I'm concerned.

Installed new SSD into laptop, boot time increased significantly

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:15 PM PDT

Last week I slotted in a Samsung EVO 860 into my Dell G7 with the first/cheapest configuration. After I got everything set up and downloaded some stuff onto the drive, browsed the web, played some games, and then turned it off. The next day I turned it on and I was stuck facing the Dell logo. A few minutes pass and the screen went black, and then after another few minutes the logo shows up again, but this time it properly boots to Windows. It seems the only way to bypass the loading is to force shutdown the laptop and turning it on again. I'm really struggling on trying to fix this issue, especially since the BIOS doesn't really let me do anything, like changing the boot priority order. Any kind of help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Also, if my explanation was confusing, this person literally has the exact same problem as me, and maybe they explained it better than I did.

    DDOS Attacks and WAN Attacks

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:22 AM PDT

In my "line of work" we check for DDOS Attacks frequently via Router Logs BUT occasionally we will see that it was a WAN Attack, and cannot verify the attack in the way we need to. Can anyone explain the difference between a WAN Attack and a DDOS Attack? Are they essentially the same? And how would one person acquire this information and use it against another person?
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Disk Usage on Boot always 100% - no matter how much MB/s is used.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:23 AM PDT

Every time I boot, my disk jumps to 100% (though "System" Task and everything else is ~1MB/s). It also takes ~10s to open Task Manager. usually, if i copy big files off my hdd, it can go up to over 40MB/s (a.k.a. real 100% Disk usage) but on boot it's already with few MB/s on 100% and i can't open/start anything until it drops again after few minutes. Does somebody know why this is happening and how I can fix that?

    Specs (if needed):

    Notebook: Asus X556U

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6198DU CPU @2.30GHz

    RAM: 8GB

    OS: Windows 8.1 64Bit

    AMD RX480 Memory Clock issues

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:12 AM PDT

    CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K (Skylake), 4 Cores 4 Threads @ 4.1GHz

    RAM: 16 GB

GPU: MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8G, Adrenalin 18.8.2 Drivers (newest available from AMD)

    OS: Windows 10 (v1803, Build 17134.228, 64bit)

    Connected Displays: 1x ASUS VX248

What I've tried so far: DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and reinstalled the GPU driver, tried multiple versions. Full scans with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. Toggled Hardware Acceleration on and off in different applications. Toggled Power Efficiency inside the AMD Settings on and off. Tried multiple user accounts.

So a while ago, a GPU driver update from AMD seemingly broke memory clock speeds, as it wouldn't clock down after playing a game or when watching a video. The official problem description from AMD was

Graphics and memory clock speeds may remain elevated or locked while gaming if video content is also playing on the system.

This was apparently fixed with 18.8.1, but not for me for some reason. I still had the problem, even after a clean reinstall of the GPU driver. I was hoping the new 18.8.2 update would fix it for me too, but again no change. It seems to have gotten even worse somehow:

The issue: Core clock speeds are low, but the memory clock keeps jumping from min to max when there is movement on the screen. The jumps occur so often that the GPU temperature is affected, as the GPU reaches up to 60°C (the point where the fans spin up) without anything demanding running. Only when there is no movement and even the mouse is still, memory clock returns to the minimum value. Here's how it looks in Afterburner. (And yes, it also happens when Afterburner is not running as I can see the clock speeds jump around in Radeon Wattman)

Computer keeps turning itself on after shutdown. (Windows 10)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:35 AM PDT

6600k, GTX 1070, 16GB RAM. Recently installed a new MX500 SSD with Windows 10 on it.

    So far I've tried:

Disabling the mouse/keyboard from waking windows Disabling LAN from waking the computer in the BIOS Disabling fast boot Flashing the BIOS Making sure all of the connectors were secure, such as the 24 pin and all of the case buttons on the f panel Making sure all settings in the BIOS, such as "Wake on LAN" and "AC back" were all disabled

And so far, it still keeps turning itself on after shutdown. Any idea?

    Keylogger found on PC

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 09:46 PM PDT

Related to my last post about some random PART file i was being paranoid about, i pumped up my security last night and spent a while clearing out old and unused programs and files. While doing that i found a little thing called BlackBox Express which after a little research turns out to be a keylogger. Im stressing out over how it got there, how long its been there and if deleting it will make any difference now. I know im grasping at straws but can i do anything about it now? It likely has my old credit card details and years of passwords but then again it could also be as recent as last week

Is my laptop bricked after a windows 10 update even though I already have windows 10 installed?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:32 PM PDT

Hopefully I tagged this correctly. My Lenovo idea pad Y700-15ISK (link for more details) has had update issues for over a year. It would always get stuck and have to restart. Over an hour long process.

My roommate was able download a malware software to help it with almost all of its updates. I can ask for more information about that when she wakes up. Recently it asked if I wanted to install windows 10 and I clicked yes. I don't know why I did because I already have windows 10 installed.

It started the installation but got stuck in a never ending loop. It can't get past the Lenovo loading screen and a windows blue/blank screen. It'll switch back and forth for hours with no end in sight.

We can access the FIOS but none of the options are responsive. I'm not tech savvy so feel free to ask for clarification.

Unusably slow wifi at apartment complex, front desk and internet supplier won't help.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:37 PM PDT

Hope this is the right place to post this! I live in a fairly large apartment complex that provides free wifi. However. this wifi is basically unusably slow. I ran a speed test and my download and upload speeds were 0.14 mbps and 0.07 mbps, respectively. Plugged into an ethernet cable the speeds are 21.14 mbps and 19.6 mbps, so it's clearly a wifi thing. We do not have a router or modem to fiddle with.

I tried calling the company and they transferred me around a lot before telling me to call my front desk. Called the front desk, they said that they don't know why the company told me to call them and that they'd "look into it." Called the company again and they transferred me around before telling me they would call someone else and then they gave me a number that was two digits short of an actual phone number but the guy on the phone didn't seem to understand.

Anyway, is there anything I can do to speed up my wifi to useable speeds other than buying my own internet? I really don't know anything about routers or things like that.

    Thanks!

Update: went and bought a router. Still slow, but better! Thanks guys!

My laptop's GPU appears to be shot, is there any way I can replace it instead of more expensive options?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:14 AM PDT

The GTX 1060 in my Acer Aspire V Nitro BE has some serious problems that are causing it to climb to 100C basically every time it's in use, and after dozens of hours of troubleshooting and fiddling and two trips to PC repairmen I'm pretty sure the thing's just busted. The issue, however, is that the fucker is soldered right to the motherboard, so I can't just grab a new one and pop it in myself, and both the repairmen I went to expressed that they wouldn't do it either. Is this a couple isolated instances of inexperience with this type of repair, or is finding a tech who will replace the card next to impossible?

I'd like to avoid having to buy a whole new laptop or tower right now, as dropping $500 or more isn't really an option. Is there anything I can do?

    RAM liberation, so to speak?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:36 PM PDT

hey, short and sweet- i have 4 gigabytes of RAM plugged in. the available RAM totals up to 800 megabytes. this sucks major buckets, because this baby's got a GTX 1080 and i can't use it. even more of a kick in the ass, my dad's computer- built much more for bitcoin mining- has 8 gigabytes, but it's not compatible with my PC.

anyway, is there any way to free up some of the RAM? i'm using Windows 10 LTSB (please don't argue with me over how a full release is better or something, i get it a lot but i'm fine with what i have) and i'm worried that Google chrome is taking up most of it. thanks in advance.

Windows installation from USB weird problem with SSD

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:58 AM PDT

Recently I bought a new Samsung SSD. I got a Windows iso image on USB. When I try to install Windows on the old SSD it works ok. It is being installed and it works. But when I try to use the same USB to install Windows on new bought SSD it says "Windows cannot access the installation sources". It sounds like there's a problem with iso image on USB but the same image works while installing on the other SSD. I found this iso "somewhere" on the internet, i mean, it's not original one. I gave my laptop to service to get it fixed and they managed to install original windows with no errors. Is it possible that newer Samsung drivers are protected from having installed "not original" windows and that could cause the error?

Weird whining coming from PSU when PC is turned off at night

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:53 AM PDT

First off, sorry if this is totally normal, but I just wanted to play it safe.

I bought and built this pc around 2 months ago, recently I've noticed that sometimes when I turn off my pc and go to sleep, I start listening to a weird whining sound almost like a siren (as in, the sound fluctuates up and down) coming from it.

The sound doesn't seem to happen when the PC is running, it's a very distinctive sound and easy to recognise even with the pc on, and it doesn't happen every time I turn the pc off.

The sound does stop at night when I completely turn off the PSU in it's power button, which was how I concluded the sound was coming from it, possibly. The PSU in question is a Seasonic S12II 620W.

Is this normal? Dangerous? Worth the trouble of taking everything apart and asking for a new PSU since I still have the warranty (it's only 2 months old)?

Both alt keys get pressed when using the 'c' key

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:47 AM PDT

    Hi,

Whenever I type the 'c' key on my keyboard, nothing happens. I didn't know what the problem was until I used an internet program that shows which keys you are using when you type. I pressed the 'c' key and noticed that both Alt keys get pressed when I use the c key.

How can I solve this problem? It is pretty annoying since I can't use ctrl+c ctrl+v now.

    Thanks in advance.

Google image search results are not clickable when connected to my Wifi, but work fine when behind a VPN or tethering over 4G

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:33 AM PDT

Devices: Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, Oneplus 5t

    Browsers: Chrome, Safari

    ISP: Vodafone Broadband

    Router: Google Wifi

I am having a strange issue, not sure how long its been happening as I don't use google images all that often but I have only been a vodafone customer for 1 month and I have only had Google wifi for about the same time so hard to eliminate either of those based on that. When I do a google image search, for anything, I am unable to click on the images to either enlarge them or get through to their source.

I have a Private Internet Access VPN account, when I enable that everything works perfectly as intended. I am using Google's DNS at the router and I have all my ISP 'content controls' disabled.

If I tether my 4g connection to my mac and try, everything works as intended without the VPN.

What on earth could be causing this?

EDIT: I made a video showing the website working when behind a vpn and not working when disconnected: https://youtu.be/Ok7UlC17G6E

    Whatsapp backup issues

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:30 AM PDT

    Hi,

My whatsapp crashed today. All messages were lost. It says there is a local backup and a google drive backup. The local backup is from yesterday, the google drive one from a week ago. Ideally I'd restore it to the local backup. I have no idea, however, how to actually full up my messages again with the backup. Currently there's a few chats from people who have talked to me after the crash, but all history is gone. Thanks for the help.
