Why would using a microwave shut off my WiFi, and how can I fix it?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:14 PM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but this is actually my girlfriends post but we're both very curious, anywhere this is her issue:

Every time I use the microwave our WiFi gets so slow it barely runs. If you're watching YouTube videos or Netflix they will stop and buffer until the microwave stops. Same when playing games, the game will be running fine until we use the microwave and then it lags like crazy or eventually crash.

    SSD Help

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:41 PM PDT

Today me and my friend installed a new SSD on his pc. We believe we formatted it correctly however after we used the samsung migrate tool to move his OS from the HDD to the SSD, Windows no longer detects his SSD but it is in his BIOS. What could be wrong and how do we fix this?

    Asus anti-surge trouble

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:51 AM PDT

Recently my computer has refused to boot up, with the Asus anti surge message appearing whenever I try to boot up. Disabling the anti surge in the bios allows me to boot up normally, but I'm worried that it might actually be a psu issue.

The 12V rail voltage is floating around 13.5V when I checked in the bios, and around 14.4V when I checked in hwinfo.

My PSU is a Seasonic M12II 620 Bronze. I've had it for 4 years, along with the rest of my build.

    Asus H97 Plus

    i5-4690

    MSI R9 280

    Samsung 840 Evo 250GB

    WD 1TB HDD

    Kingston HyperX 8GB 1600

Also, for the past few months, I haven't been able to boot up normally. A message appears asking to press F1 to enter bios, however there wasn't any other error message, or if there was I didnt notice it. So I'd just press f1, enter the bios and the exit the bios to start up.

I tried resetting the CMOS, and updating the bios. It still shows the 12V rail at 13.5V.

I'm going to try to find a cheap multimeter to check the voltage manually, but I'd appreciate any advice as to whether this is a problem with the mobo or the psu. Can a higher than normal 12V rail voltage trigger the anti surge?

This was the best psu I could find in that price range, so I'd rather hope it isn't the psu at fault, as I'd have to probably just buy the same model again.

Sorry for the bad formatting, I'm using my phone to type this.

Win 10 Memory usage issues, whats causing it?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:16 PM PDT

72% memory when idle, can go up to 95+ with only a couple of tabs open on any browser. Is there a virus or too many background apps? Not sure, none of the background apps seem to be using substantiall space

    Resource monitor

    More Details

    Overview

    Task manager

Edit: Someone on livechat said it was a driver leaking into memory but have no idea which one or how to fix it

Edit 2: Booting in safe mode uses 15% mem usage, rebooting in normal uses 25% so def something leaking

Setting up surround sound, amp doesn't have hdmi input.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:42 AM PDT

I have a Samsung UE60JU6000K TV, an HDMI audio extractor and a Musical Fidelity Elektra E10 integrated amplifier. I do not use a cable box of any sort (which is annoying as every tutorial involving an hdmi extractor has one). The TV has an HDMI ARC port. So I have connected the hdmi extractor IN port to the TV's ARC port. I have then come connected two RCA cables from the extractor to the amp. Shouldn't this be working assuming all other settings are okay? I've been messing around with cables, amp settings and TV settings to no avail. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Advice for building secure home network?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:05 PM PDT

    Hello,

I've been having all manner of issues with my network lately. From neighbors hacking the WiFi, to constant de-sync while sharing media/data. I've got a 1GBps google fibre connection and i recently registered a business to work from home, so i wanna do a clean install on everything including my mobile; hopefully making it easier to switch between devices and control my home PC.

Devices; 5k home PC build (Windows 10 home) Samsung Note 8 (Android 5.0) Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro S (Win 10 Pro)

Requirements; Secure 10GBps intranet 1GPS guest Tor etwork (w/ mac spoofing and dynamically assigned tor exit nodes) Cloud server on home PC running 24/7 Remote access to tablet & PC from phone VPN shared across all devices + ability to add devices to network from other location Anti malware/Live Virus protection.

Can anyone recommend the best way/distro to achieve this?

I was thinking about direct booting to Kali Linux on the home PC, then launching Windows 10 workstation/Hackintosh images. My router has a guest network function, but it's not very good and i would rather people sign into the network through web portal for T&C's

I have x3 3D printers at home + a few IoT devices. Would be great if i could access them remotely aswell. Currently i have no smart home software (Alexa, google home etc.) But would be interested in setting something up, if it made everything easier

I would also like to host a Tor node, for all internet traffic to pass through (if Kali doesn't end up being used). I have no intention to break the law, but would like to secure my data/privacy as much as possible. I don't mind sacrificing speed.

I have a VR kit I'm intending to do some design stuff with, is it possible to have the home PC rendering an environment 24/7?

The Note 8 also comes with a portable Oculus headset, which I'd like to use remotely to access/stream digital content through LTE

Sorry if this isn't specific enough, this tech stuff is still very new to me. I've exhausted my google search capabilities, so I'm looking for some friendly Techie to offer some advice.

    Thanks in advance

Black screens, programs become unusable, browser issues

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:19 AM PDT

Hi, the symptoms I'm getting are a little complicated to explain so sorry for the rubbish title.

This issue first started cropping up when I decided to try run two games (GW2 and BDO) at the same time. Since then, it has became a somewhat regular occurrence even when just running GW2 - it rarely happens with just BDO, sometimes I run Hearthstone at the same time as BDO and it will happen a bit more often then, but still not as often as when I'm running GW2.

What actually happens is my screen will go black. I'll have the ability to alt tab and move between windows - tabbing to any game though will return the black screen, which will eventually resolve itself in anywhere from 2-40 seconds or so. Other programs will often also have windows that are totally black and generally for these I will have to use the task manager to end process and then relaunch them if I want to use them. The other apps that can get hit by this include discord, spotify and battle.net. Individual tabs in my firefox session will at times go blank or crash and need to be f5'd. Attempting to full screen a youtube video in firefox at any point during a session in which I've experienced one of these crashes will result in the video instead playing in a tiny window in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Other things in firefox fail as well like when using a search bar, the drop down suggestions won't appear (actually I think they are appearing somewhere else but are hidden? It's hard to describe - they definitely aren't where they're supposed to be though).

My suspicion is that it's a GPU issue but there's no artifacting that I've seen. I have been running HWMonitor lately to keep an eye on things and temps seem, whilst higher than I would like, not something that would cause crashes. GPU tends to hover around 80 degrees under load or lower if the ambient temperature is very low (getting into winter here), CPU tends to be more around 70.

about my system: i5 4690k (3.5 base, oc'd to 4.0), evga 980ti ftw edition, asrock z97 extreme4, 2x 8gb ddr 1600ghz (regrettably not in dual channel config as two of my dimm slots seem to be faulty or broken), antec earthwatts 750w psu, running windows 10 pro.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is incredibly frustrating.

[Windows 10] Is there a way to remove the default application by file type?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:17 AM PDT

Hey there! Hope you guys can help me out. I accidentally forgot to uncheck the "Always Use..." button when opening a file and now the software I used to run it is the default.

This isn't really a huge problem but more of a preference thing. I hate that the icon of the file changes to the default software. I would rather much prefer to select the program to run it everytime I do and have the blank page icon as opposed to having different and unequal icons per file type.

I tried resetting to Microsoft Recommended Defaults but it only changed Email/Maps/Music/Photo/Video/Browser. And when going to "Choose Default Application by....", I have no option of resetting the default app. Only changing it to another software.

Looking forward to your responses. Cheers!

Why pc won't boot my windows installation dvd?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:12 AM PDT

Ok so basically I had to switch my windows 7 installation dvd because I thought it was faulty only to find out that the same problem happens. When pc opens the white blinkerig underscore apears, goes off a couple times then pc opens normally. The dvd works on my laptop.I've even deactivated my sdd from the bios so only the dvd would be read, and after a couple of seconds the text "reboot and select proper device" appears.Any help would be amazing!

How can I switch between headphones and speakers without unplugging and plugging back in?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:08 AM PDT

I've been using some Wesdar PC speakers for a while now, connected to my PC with via USB and 3.5mm jack and I've also recently bought a HyperX cloud stinger gaming headset to use on my PC aswell (the headset also connects to the PC via the headphone jack).

The only way I've been able to switch between the two is to unplug the headset from the front of the PC and plug in the speakers instead. If my headset is plugged into the front and I plug the speakers into the rear port then it doesn't seem to pick them up at the same time. It would be nice to be able to have them both plugged in and just switch between the two on my desktop.

Anyone experienced anything similar or know of a fix?

    WiFi disappearing from Laptop

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:02 AM PDT

Hey all! So I've got a really weird issue. I've been in Korea for these past few weeks, and when I first got to this hotel, my laptop, smart phone, and my roommate's tech all connected just fine to the wireless WiFi here. But within a week, my laptop suddenly stopped connecting to the WiFi about 5 minutes after starting it up. When I went to find the network to reconnect, it wasn't there anymore. Strangely enough, for my phone and my roommate's phone/laptop, the WiFi is working just fine.

I've tried: 1. Restarting my computer. When I did that, the WiFi showed up again on the network, but when I tried to connect, it let me type in the password, then tried to connect for a few seconds, then said, "can't connect to network."

    1. Forgetting the network and re-connecting. This worked for about 5 minutes, but then the WiFi disappeared again and the same issue continued.

    2. Using an ethernet cable. This didn't help at all, as it seems whatever modem/router or whatever that's in my room is actually for the TV. There's no way to use an ethernet cable properly.

    3. Troubleshooting. This only resulted in my laptop telling me to use an ethernet cable.

Thanks in advance for any offered advice or help!

HP 255 G6 Laptop Screen Glitch On Boot

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:01 AM PDT

    Hi there!

I purchased a laptop recently with freeDOS installed. I noticed straight away that there were artefacts flashing on the screen when booting but i thought that maybe it was just a quirk of freeDOS. I have since installed Ubuntu but the problem persists. The below link is just a small clip of the issue. It's fine the rest of the time apart from when I minimise and maximise programs. The animation seems to cause it to glitch.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I've linked to a clip, below.

Volume jumps back to previous level

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:00 AM PDT

I'm asking this here, because my Google-fu has stopped working i simply can't find a solution.

    I have an Asus G752VS.

    The issue is the following:

I set my Windows volume to 30 (could be any number). I then plug in my headset into the laptop. Let's say i change the volume to 45.

Ok then i unplug the headset and it jumps back to 30. If i then adjust the volume it will jump back to 30. I can't change it, no matter what i do. Rebooting is the only thing i can do.

I tried installing the driver with Windows Update, from Asus' website (same version as the Windows Update driver, but installed it nontheless) and i installed the one from Realteks website (was newer than Windows' and Asus' driver). Still facing the same problem.

This is driving me insane and im about to buy an external sound card, which is ridiculous.

    Any help is appreciated.

Is it possible to set up firewall rules/profiles based on which internet connection is being used? w/crappy image explanation

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:17 AM PDT

I use Windows 10 Home x64 bit edition.

Here is a pic because it feels kind of convoluted to explain:

    https://i.imgur.com/qjZyV6T.png

Basically I want to disallow everything but a few specified programs on one connection and allow everything but those few specified programs on another connection.

Functionally my goal is to prevent unspecified programs from using up my tethered mobile data while simultaneously forcing certain programs to use my superior mobile data. This would allow me to do normal more data bandwidth intensive things on my normal connection while not bogging down the better metered connection.

I currently only have Windows built in firewall but I'm open to using a third party option. Also if there is another firewall unrelated way to accomplish this I'd be happy to hear that as well.

    My keyboard isn't working properly

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:13 AM PDT

My keyboard isnt working properly, I thought it was locked but I dont really know what is happening, I suspect there is a repeating key. The only thing working is when I press the numbers, and all that does is change the backlight setting. Usually for the backlight setting I need to press FN and that is why I suspect FN key might be repeating. Ive reinstalled drivers but I dont think that is working for me. I feel the need to mention that it has a memory for its settings if that affects the reinstalling drivers in any way (am not sure).

I think (and fervently hope not) that my graphics card has died.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:13 AM PDT

I posted here before about my computer black screening. Some suggested that it may be the graphics card. I threw that aside, based on evidence I had pointing elsewhere.

Now, my computer screen was green. Not fully green, just as if the red and blue were a lot weaker than they should be. On a reboot (again), the screen is showing nothing, while the sounds for startup are still playing.

So my computer is working, but the graphics aren't.

However, it has been suggested that I simply don't have enough wattage for my setup.

    (Processor: Intel(R) Core i7 CPU @2.67 GHz

    RAM: 10 GB

Graphics card: AMD Radeon 6800 1 GB @1050 MHz

Motherboard: Intel Dx5850 (I think. Can't see anything else without taking the motherboard out)

    450 watts)

I'm submitting here in the hopes that someone can say some obscure thing that means I don't have to replace the video card, really.

UPDATE: Another reboot after letting it cool for 10 minutes seems to have fixed it. Crisis averted.

    Headphones randomly disconnecting

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:07 AM PDT

Randomly, when watching a video or something similar, my headphones make a pop sound and the audio starts playing through my monitor for a second and then goes back to my headphones. The headphones I'm using are the Razer Kraken 7.1 v2 and I have had them since about last August and this issue only appeared recently.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of my USB drivers, I have tried disabling the 'turn this device off to save power' option in device manager and I have tried resetting my bios and removing my overclock on my processor. Whenever it disconnects my PC also freezes for a second or two when it reconnects again. This makes it a problem when talking to friends online and (or) playing games. I also believe that my keyboard stops working during this time too so it may be a problem with my USB ports or possibly my power supply.

    System Specs: OS: Windows 10 Home | CPU: A8-7650k (OC'd to 3.8GHz) | GPU: GTX 1060 3GB | Headphones: Razer Kraken 7.1 v2 | Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Chroma v2 TE | RAM: 8GB DDR3 | Power Supply Wattage: 500W

Please ask if you need any more information and I will be very happy if anyone can try to help!
