This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Can a computer illiterate noob like myself build a gaming PC by following a step-by-step video guide, or should I just light my money on fire now?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:19 AM PDT

I'm nervous. Very nervous. But after exhausting every possible game of interest on consoles, and constantly lurking from a distance on all of the great options that PC gamers have, I really would love to make the switch to the master race. I thought this could be a good opportunity to learn something useful while simultaneously acquiring happiness in the form of an expanded library.

I've watched a load of videos and read even more articles, and I think I'm capable of following basic instructions, but do you think I'm bound to do more harm than good considering I don't know the difference between a CPU and GPU and what RAM really means?

Everything I've seen points towards building a gaming PC over buying pre-built. Budget isn't really an issue, I'd like to be high end but not extreme.

While I would be tremendously appreciative of input and advice on the build itself, I've really just come here for a general consensus of whether or not you would approve of me taking this on, or if you'd suggest I'd leave the building for those more capable than I, who actually know what they are talking about.

    Cheers.

Edit: what an awesome group of people on this sub. Thanks to everyone for all the input so far, please keep laying it on me. I'll share my build list shortly in case any opinions there. So, so, so appreciated.

Edit 2: holy crap, you guys weren't lying when you said people here are quick with a helpful reply. Sitting in meetings at work and my phone is buzzing constantly and I love it. I'm reading all of your comments, even if not replying, and just wanted to say that while the internet can be a dark place these days, you all have restored my faith in the kindness of internet strangers. Much love and appreciation for all of ya. I now need to start figuring out the actual software side it sounds :) I shall persist!

My first high-end gaming computer/workstation, first time building my own computer! [Build Ready]

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:48 AM PDT

WARNING : A bit of a long read so sorry about that

Hey there guys, this is probably more of an upgrade than a full build (re-using my old case, Power supply, peripherals etc.), I also managed to snag some great deals from ebay and other second-hand retailers.

Here is a complete list of parts for my PC!

The total sum comes up to around the range of ~1400 USD (approx £1050 here in the UK) but I managed to grab some bargains, for example the 1080 I bought for £368 used on ebay as well as my i7-8700k for £225 and my Samsung 960 EVO 500 GB for £120 (482.74$, 295.16$ and 157.42$ Respectably) so the total cost is about ~£180 or ~300$ cheaper.

Since this was my first time building a PC I didn't really know what to expect, however it surprised me how smooth everything went and the only thing I struggled on was installing the cooler as I didn't know how to go about fitting on the mount and screws (I suck at following instructions on paper), a quick youtube tutorial later and I got it on fine. My older brother who is an IT Tech also talked me through what steps to go through and how to wire everything up etc.

Surprisingly I managed to get the computer to post first time with no real issues, the SSD I had bought of ebay hadn't of been formatted however and was packaged rather poorly, I was surprised to find that it even worked and have since left the seller a neutral feedback saying that it worked but it was packaged poorly.

Will post Benchmarking scores soon, just installed some games from steam :)

EDIT: Here is the userbenchmark from my very first computer that I owned, not the one I've upgraded from but I thought it would be interesting to see :) Http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/9931355

How to install Win10 on a new NVME M.2, but keep all my current files in a different SSD?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:00 PM PDT

I have a 128GB SSD that I am installing Windows 10 on, a 240GB SSD for games, and a 240GB SSD that currently has Windows 10 and all my assorted programs on it, as well as a 1 TB Hard Drive. Is it possible to put Windows 10 on my M.2 drive, and then span my SSD's to put all my programs and games on, and if so, is there any tutorial you can show me that says how, or if anyone has a simple explanation?

Can't decide which monitor to get for 1440p 144hz g-sync gaming.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 01:11 PM PDT

The title says it. I am really conflicted and was wondering if anyone had any advice. Right now, I am between the Acer Predator XB271HU, the Asus ROG Swift PG279Q, and the Dell Gaming S2716DGR. I am leaning towards the Acer Predator, but there seems to be a bug where there is a vertical screen tear that, although they have fixed, they still make you order the pc then send it back to them to repair the bug. Why? Does anyone know if this is still a thing? Reviews on Amazon would imply that it was happening as recently as last month. Also, is IPS that much better than TN? Is it worth the extra $100-200? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Build Complete - Summer Darkside of the Moon

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:38 AM PDT

Finished my first real enthusiast caliber build this week. I upgraded my first custom built PC that I did a year and half ago. I thought that I had learned a lot about what/how to do things from my prior build but I had a non overclockable CPU and the whole thing was lacking any style. Between this sub and PCMR I eventually felt that I needed to have one of those pretty ones. I also wanted to be able to experience this 1440p 144hz Gsync thing everyone is raving about. Of course I'm still waiting for best buy to deliver the damn monitor.

My lessons learned from this build: 1) You don't really have to be that careful when building except during two parts. 1) Removing the socket cover from the mother board. 2) Mounting the CPU cooler.

Yes I am that idiot that bent a ton of pins on my first mobo. I took the socket cover off before putting on the mounting brackets. In my over excited state I went to put the socket cover back on incorrectly and bent a bunch of pins bricking the motherboard. I spent a few hours with a needle trying to get it back but no luck :(.

    2) Next time I'll go water cooled. I really like the look of this air cooler and from most of what I read there isn't much difference between air cooled and entry level water cooled set ups. I am not going to be overclocking for sport so aircooled should be fine for me.

The biggest con with this decision is that the Cooler Master MF140 TUF edition is a total bitch to mount. Yes, the front fan appears to be on wrong, yes I had to flip that fan around after mounting the cooler because my dumbass forgot to turn on the cooler and test the orientation first.

    3) RGB is awesome in my opinion, I love the aesthetic. The draw back is of course all the extra wires. Wires, wires, wires...

Anyways I am having a blast. I'm actually quietly enjoying No Man's Sky atm.

I finished building an hour ago, and when I turned on the computer, LED's and fans turned on.

However, there was no signal going to my monitor at all.

Note; LEDs were on the mobo, gpu and cooler. They all turned on.

Seemed like all the fans were on, could feel air blowing.

    Thanks in advance.

I had a relatively smooth build with this PC, especially because it was my first. I had recently graduated from college so my parents helped me out as a graduation gift with this. And overall I am extremely happy with how it came out. I am using it for gaming, streaming, and video editing and have no complaints so far. The next things I am gonna do with it is add the 3 Corsair LL fans to the front and move the preinstalled front fan to the top rear as an exhaust.

I think the biggest problem I had with this build was putting the CPU cooler on. I wasn;t putting the metal tabs of the cooler on in the right order and I was getting frustrated with it but I ended up getting it. Im actually pretty proud of my cable management, the only cables I really have that couldnt go behind the motherboard was the rear fan cable, and the CPU cooler RGB cable.

Overall I am very much enjoying my build, and now I just want to build more. Thank you all for helping me with this, I couldn't have done it without this sub.

    Noob Needing Build Feedback

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 02:37 PM PDT

    Hey Everyone,

So I recently decided to build my own gaming PC and for the past week or so I've been researching parts, their performance and compatibility. At this stage my head is swimming and I feel like I've really only learned the basics. I've assembled a list of parts that make sense to me based off of what little knowledge I have. I wanted to post the build here to see if any knowledgable people could point out any incompatibilities/flaws/efficiency losses in the build. A couple of specific things that I'm confused about are below, but just general feedback on the build would be much appreciated as well.

    1. PSU - Is having an 850W PSU problematic for a build that, according to pcpartpicker, will pull around 400W max? I keep finding conflicting information on this. Some people say it doesn't matter at all and that the PSU will only draw the energy it needs. Others say there will be some significant "efficiency loss."
    2. I don't really understand what factors into making a 144Hz monitor run optimally. Can someone explain the relationship between monitors and the other computer components? Is it just the quality of the GPU I need to be considering here? Could I throw on a second one of these monitors with this build?

    New PC - 1440p/144hz (replacing 10+ y/o PC) Looking for Advice/Feedback

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:41 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming/Entertainment with some light video editing. May possibly run virtual machines in the future.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p / 144hz gaming and video is my goal High Framerate (100+ or w/e is required for a 144hz monitor) Game settings maxed (or close to it, perhaps with shadows toned down)

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1000-$2000 (Though I have no problem investing more. I may not buy all parts up front, such as the 144hz monitor)

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This is my second attempt at a new PC build to replace my 10+ year old PC. Admitedly, I may have gone overboard with parts, but part of this is to treat myself and start enjoying games again. Most games I play do not require that powerful of a PC (Fortnite, Overwatch, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, etc), however part of the reason I play those games is due to my old PC. I would like to treat myself to something nice, and start tearing through my giant Steam Library!

I am looking for advice on if/where I should do cut backs (if any). I am not too worried about the overall cost, however I would like to try and not spend more than $2000 with my initial purchase (purchasing other components after a few weeks of tinkering, such as monitor, internal storage, and half the RAM).

Some areas I question my choices on are:

    • Motherboard (I focused on compatibility, but they all seem similar to me)

    • Memory: I tried to buy some of the lower cost 32GB 4x dimms, but perhaps that is a mistake (I did check some reviews). Also perhaps I should buy 16GB 2x at first, and buy the other half in the future.

    • Storage (SSD) - Is there any reason for me to look at PCI SSDs (M2 Interface)? I know they are technically faster, but I mostly read people use them to simplify cable management.

    • Storage (HDD) - I selected a Hybrid Drive to speed up transfer of files. I will mostly be storing media, which I could easily do on a HDD as well. Do Hybrid Drives provide a significant performence boost even when used as a secondary drive (for transferring files between it and the SSD)?

    • Case - I selected the NZXT H440 because it seemed to have room for what I need, and they have a Black/Orange version for $120 on their website that I was digging. But I do recognize I may be able to cut some cost here (it just seemed minimal, versus my lack of knowledge on cases).

I know there is a lot of info there! I tried to do my best to do independent research first, but many things have changed in the last decade, and I feel like I still only understand half of the picture. Thank you for taking the time to read this and assist where possible!

MSI Radeon RX 560 - 1024 4GB Aero ITX Performance?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:15 PM PDT

For my budget build all I need to purchase is the memory, motherboard, and video card. I'm running into conflicting results on this rx 560 card. I'm planning to run iRacing mostly with this PC. Anyone have this card or know how this card will perform? I'm interested in this specific card because the price is only $120 from Newegg now.

First time builder looking for help before pulling the trigger

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:50 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm a first time builder looking to put something together for personal use, work use, and (mostly) gaming. I'm new to the world of PC gaming, but am hoping to get generally excellent frame rates on highest settings and have a system that's somewhat future proofed for years down the line, although I get that no amount of future proofing will outstrip how fast tech is moving these days, at least on highest settings. I'm not really looking to overclock.

A friend of mine who knows a ton about this stuff spent a lot of time helping me out and answering questions, but I don't want to keep burdening him.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this build, or suggestions? My cpu was beefier in an earlier build (an i9), but due to a mobo improvement I had to take a hit on either the cpu or gpu and I picked cpu. I appreciate any thoughts or help!

Same model of RAM not outputing video

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:00 PM PDT

Hello everyone, i've been having issues while trying to upgrade my memory. I've had the same 4GB of ram for awhile, over 3-4 years, and recently i've gone and bought another one, exact same model (Kingston KVR13N9S8/4), but whenever i try and boot my pc, there is no video output.

My configuration trials, in order were: 1- New RAM alone, Channel 0 Slot 1; 2- New RAM alone, Channel 1 Slot 1; 3- Old RAM Channel 0 slot 1, New RAM Channel 1 Slot 1; 4- Old RAM Channel 0 slot 1, New RAM Channel 0 Slot 2.

None of the configurations above output any video at all, only when i have my old ram stick solo it works. The thing is,my first line of thought was: "oh it must be a bad stick", so i came back to the store and refunded since they didn't have the same model in stock, but only after they sent me to another place to check if there was really no video, in which they have confirmed. 1 week later (today), i've went and bought a new one, different store, and had the same issues, came back, swapped for yet another stick, from the same model, and lo and behold: the exact same thing happened. I can get a refund up until monday (07/30), but i can't think its a coincidence that 3 different sticks aren't working while i have an older stick from the exact same model running the pc i'm using to type this reddit post. Could someone help me?

Edit: Forgot to mention but the first new ram i used once got video, but only when it had the old ram in Channel 0, slot 1, and it on Channel 0 slot 2. My mobo didnt detect it though, it was as if it didn't exist. Used Memtest to try and troubleshoot but it only confirmed that it wasn't detected. That one ram stick was the first that i've refunded though, and i realize now that it was a bad idea so i imediately tried on the other configs and havent tried dual-channel since.

Is it a good time to build a gaming PC

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:09 AM PDT

I am considering building a gaming PC in the next couple of months. All the usual reasons that normally make reconsider are pushed aside, however one thing still worries me.

The current GPUs have been in production for 2 years. So the productivity has not seen any significant improvement and the prices haven't been reduced. Had the prices been lowered things would be different, but is it cost effective jumping in at this point?(my currently planned build is with a gtx1070ti)

Places to get an old GPU

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:23 PM PDT

Hey i'm building a server(from a desktop mobo and such) and i'm trying to find a cheap GPU and it doesn't have a new model. Older models will work. I just need it for the initial setup and to do some hashing.

First time PC Build. Please help.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:18 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have been playing console for years and can finally afford going to PC and need some help because I do not have the slightest clue where to start. I enjoy playing the Elder Scrolls series, Fallout, GTA, Overwatch, and a few others. I don't really know what to look for when building a PC or even how I would approach the assembly process. I would appreciate some insight on what to look for in parts, suggestions of parts, etc. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

    Gtx1080 and i7 8700k advice with 4k

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 02:26 PM PDT

I'm picking up a new pc this weekend and my current monitors are pretty basic. Going to be running with i78700k and gtx1080. I'm not super aware of what that's capable of. Will I be able to run 4k 60fps on most games or how capable is this set up going to be? Also 4k monitors, is there any specifics I should know about them/which ones are good(if there really is a big gap between quality) thanks for your help!

Got my $800 build ready to purchase, any substitutes you would suggest?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 04:56 AM PDT

I put together this new pc with gaming in mind. (wow, ow, bf1, skyrim, etc..) I got a lot of helpful tips from some websites as well as the folks over at /r/buildapcforme. Came to the following conclusion and just wanted to run it by the knowledgeable redditors here!

I am still trying to keep it at $800 or under , but if a worthwhile upgrade takes it to $825, ill for sure consider it! Thanks guys!

    8700K vs 2700X?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:09 AM PDT

With the 11-series coming out, I will be picking up a 1180 around release. I thought about upgrading everything else at once as well. Current Setup:

    - EVGA GTX 1080

    - Intel 6600K

    - Alienware 240Hz Monitor x2 (I plan on staying 1080 and not upgrading to 1440)

It has been awhile since I have looked into CPU differences and I wanted to have some feedback. I almost only game (Overwatch, PUBG, etc.) on my PC at the moment. 8700K offers faster performance during gaming, but MOBO and CPU cooler are pricier. 2700X offers better multi-tasking, cheaper MOBO options, and Wraith Cooler. I do not plan on having a super OC at first on either of them. Is the extra $100 (MOBO and CPU cooler) worth the additional gaming performance over the 2700X? Which one does everyone recommend for my situation? Is there anything else that I am missing? Thanks!
