    Simple Questions - July 04, 2018

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    A Windows 10 'optimization' guide

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:37 PM PDT

If you have anything not listed, recommendations on things to change, or things that should have a warning, let me know!

This was something I commented on here, and thought, since I am personally done editing and updating this, I would post this guide on its own for anyone to see.

For the sake of anyone that follows this post fully, please take your time and google things you are uncertain about. I'm not liable for your system, but I will try to help if possible. And for the love of god MAKE A RESTORE POINT BEFORE AND AFTER.

AMD chipset and GPU drivers can be found here.

Intel desktop chipsets can be found here.

Nvidia drivers can be found here.

For motherboard specific drivers, please just google your motherboard name(i.e. - AsRock X370 Taichi), and go through the manufacturers site(AsRock, Gigabyte, ASUS, MSI, etc.). Should only need/want audio, lan, wifi, and bluetooth, if applicable to your motherboard.

    General "Optimizations"

    https://github.com/Disassembler0/Win10-Initial-Setup-Script

    • Should help remove a ton of Windows 10 junk for you, and/or do things manually:

Control Panel -> Uninstall a program

    • Anything not needed can be uninstalled(3do, games, default apps, etc.).

Control Panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows features on or off

    • Can safely turn off anything not needed. Bare minimum, you want BOTH .NET frameworks, to support past and present games.

Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Advance system settings -> performance

    • Set to "Adjust for best performance." Please note that this may result in a choppy experience, such as scrolling, adjust as necessary for your experience.

    • Credit: u/not_son_goku

Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Remote settings

    • Untick "Allow Remote Assistance..."

Control Panel -> System and Security -> Power Options

    • Set to "Balanced", adjust settings to your desire.

    Credit: u/Sillywickedwitch

Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> File Explorer Options -> View

    • Untick "Hide extensions for known file types."

    • Tick "Show hidden files, folders, and drives."

    Install things

Now install whatever programs you desire.

If you wish to have safer browsing, consider setting up a virtual machine. If you are using Windows 10 Pro, Edu, or Ent, you can go through Control Panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows features on or off and enable Hyper-V, Microsoft's own VM software.

If you are running Windows 10 Home, Mobile, or Mobile Ent, you will need to download a 3rd party program, like VirtualBox or VMWare.

Either situation, you will need to enable Virtualization in your BIOS. Intel systems should be labeled "VT" or "VT-d," AMD systems should be labeled "AMD-V." This of course will depend on the motherboard manufacturer, so please google for precise directions.

Should you encounter a malicious site, or download something, you can safely nuke the VM and start fresh, your main system not so much.

    SSD "Optimizations"

    Create [DRIVE]:\Users\[USER]

    • [DRIVE] is whatever an HDD partition you want to use is(D, E, etc.), [USER] is whatever your username is

    Go to C:\Users\[USER]

    • For each folder: Right click -> Properties -> Location -> Move Set to the created directory above, with whatever folder you are currently moving(documents, photos, etc.).

Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Advance system settings -> Environment Variables

    • Edit both "TEMP" and "TMP" variables to the HDD partition.

If you want to take this even further, you can follow a part of what u/sou- posted, and create a RAMDisk using SoftPerfect Ram Disk. The guide can be found here. Use it for your %TEMP% folder, your browser cache(up to 20% speed-up in your browser!!!!), and program installs. Use this ONLY if you have the RAM to spare!

    Bonus goodies

You can add the following folder to your desktop for all useful tools:

    [FOLDER_NAME].{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Where [FOLDER_NAME] can be whatever you want to call it.

    Credit: u/goldstarstickergiver

Want to help ublock origin do its job better/faster? You can get a modified HOST file to automatically block sites/IPs that are known for adware, malware, spam, etc., etc. You can check out Steve Black's work OR this winhelp2002 HOST file.

HOST file is located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC. Make sure to rename the old HOST file, and add an extension, like .bak.

I recommend getting at least 2 USB flash drives, one to hold memtest86 should you encounter error(s) and need to test components, and another to hold Ubuntu(or any other linux flavor). Linux ISO can be burned via the Unviersal USB Installer(or any other image burning software). This bootable USB will allow you to test if you had a drive failure or not.

    Cool Programs to check out

    7-zip

    • Completely free file archive manager, can be run at the command prompt or via a GUI. Can handle basically any kind of compressed archive you can throw at it.

    Notepad++(64x) [portable] and [installer]

    • An extensible alternative to notepad and allows macros, plug-ins, and can highlight/spellcheck for various program languages(so you don't HAVE to use visual studios/Code:Blocks/whatever else).

    Display Driver Uninstaller(DDU)

    • A wonderful tool to help completely remove AMD or Nvidia graphics driver(s)/packages, highly recommended to run in safe mode.

    SysInternal Suite

    • A collection of troubleshooting tools rolled into one folder. Information on each tool can be found here.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema(HC) and Black Edition(BE)

    • As its name suggests, it's a media player. Alternative to VLC, but faster. Suggested to get madVR as well for even better playback!

    ninite

    • Helps you keep your programs up-to-date, very useful for those that want to save time for themselves.

    Paint.net

    • A free alternative to photoshop with layers.

    GIMP

    • Another free alternative to photoshop, but more feature rich for aspiring designers/illustrators.

    Start-up

    Press

    Ctrl + Shift + Esc

This opens the Task Manager. Click on the "Startup" tab, and disable anything unessential, like Steam, this will help save time booting up.

    Security

    Encryption

    VeraCrypt

    • Free open source software that can encrypt a system drive, and if desired, create a hidden volume. Useful for very sensitive information, like banking info.

    Bitlocker

    • Windows 10 built in(not Home version, sorry) encryption. Same idea as VeraCrypt, just built into Windows 10.

    Scans

    Malwarebytes

    • Should be standard at this point really, great addition to Windows Defender. Can be ran as you want, completely free but tries to push the trial on you hard.

    Spybot - Search & Destroy

    • Another great anti- malware and spyware scanner. Unfortunately, when installed, it will deactivate Windows Defender, due to having anti-virus routines built-in. This can be fixed to allow both at the same time.

    VirusTotal

    • A site that allows you to upload files, search URLs, search IP adresses, or search file hashes. Scans using 67 different scanners.

    Troubleshooting

Tom's Hardware has an extensive list of guides for Windows 10, including troubleshooting, check it out!

    Windows crashing/freezing/hanging

    Enter safe mode:

    • Get to the sign in screen, hold SHIFT and click power -> restart

    • If you cannot make it to the sign in screen, let windows keep crashing until it asks you to choose an option

In safe mode, open an elevated(administrative) command prompt and enter: SFC /SCANNOW

Run DISM(Deployment Image Service and Management Tool):

    • Windows key/Start -> "powershell" -> Right click -> Run as Administrator

Enter dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press enter. If it finds corrupted files, restart your PC.

    Run memtest86:

    • This needs to be imaged onto a USB beforehand, so if you don't have it, find a computer you can use.

When booting, at the splash screen for your motherboard, press F2 and/or Del repeatedly until you enter the BIOS. You will want to find your boot order, and set the USB containing memtest86 to be first.

    Event Viewer:

    • Windows key/Start -> "Event Viewer" -> Windows Logs -> System

Check the logs around the time of a crash, if there is an error/critical log, view it, copy the eventID, and paste into google. This should lead you to others that have had the same issue as you have, and most likely, a way to fix it.

If you have installed a driver very recently to the crashes, uninstall the driver, restart the PC, and allow Windows to find a default driver, test to ensure the issue is fixed.

I couldn't be any happier with my latest build. It's been 5 years. I'm coming from an AMD Phenom X4 II 940BE / Sapphire 7870/7850 in Crossfire on a mechanical HDD. The thing barely ran Plex.

I cleaned my CPU socket with 70% isopropyl alchol, will my pc be okay?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 06:12 AM PDT

I did that and my computer doesn't power up. I brought it to repair shop 2 days later and they manage to make it power on, however, they said the temperature of the motherboard and cpu was extremely high. I read on a forum that 70% isopropyl may contain additives that leaves residue which could affect electronic circuit. Is thst why my cpu and mobo so hot? If so, is they anyway to remove said residue?

Any good PC trackers out there I can buy for my PC?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:56 PM PDT

I'm moving to a new city and the area I'm moving into has a noticeable theft issue, and I'm wondering if there are any reliable trackers for my desktop PC in case it gets stolen for its hardware. I've been looking for trackers that could work without an internet connection, but don't think any that I found were reliable. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated?

    1050Ti to 1060 3gb upgrade worth $50?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 11:31 AM PDT

I am planning to build a budget 1080p gaming PC real soon. I am from Southeast Asia, specifically the Philippines, which means there aren't a whole lot of parts to choose from and they cost a little more. This is initially the build I had in mind

    i3-8100 Gigabyte H310M-S2H HyperX Fury 1x8gb 2400mhz Galax GTX 1050 Ti OC Kingston 120gb SSD Corsair VS550W

This build amounts to $549 (if you're wondering why there isn't a case and an HDD, it's because I already have a hand-me-down CoolerMaster N200 and a 1TB WD Blue)

The problem I'm having is recently, a shop put the Palit 1060 Dual Fan 3gb on sale from about $255 down to $227. The 1050 Ti on my build costs $177. And watching benchmarks on YouTube, there is about a 20fps difference between both cards and in some cases, even a 30fps difference.

I wish I could get the 1060 6gb but it is way over my budget. If I replace the 1050 Ti with the 1060 3gb, the build would amount to $599 and that's the absolute borderline of my budget.

So, is it worth spending $50 more for the 1060 3gb?

    A very strange occurance.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:02 PM PDT

    (On mobile so format is garbage) Gigabyte AB350-Gaming Asus GTX1060 6GB Ryzen 7 1700 Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8gb) 3000mhz Corsair CX 550M

I am building a PC, and I've been having issues all day trying to get it to post, but it's just not working. What I'm finding strange is when I replace the 1060 with an old R7 240 I have lying around, and use the Corsair RM 650X from my build, I can get to bios, but only if I use the left monitor in my set up. If I try to boot with it plugged into the right it won't work (only having one plugged in at a time btw), and it will only work if I plug in the HDMI after the PC has been running for a second. I have had it sometimes leave the monitor on as if it's recieving an image but it doesn't show anything. Any suggestions or if anyone has had this MOBO in the past and maybe had issues?

I have also tested every single componenet in the build (except the Mobo) on my PC and they're all fine.

Do I need to reinstall Windows when getting a new mobo?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:53 AM PDT

I bought my key as an OEM Win 7 key a few years back and I had to reinstall it but I did the Win10 for free upgrade thingy and was wondering if I have to reinstall again now if I want to put in a new mobo (+ cpu if that matters) but use the same exact SSD as my booting device.

Did I bend 2 pins on my mobo, or is this normal?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:24 PM PDT

I just was prepping my H110 itx board so I could sell it and then I noticed this: https://i.imgur.com/SzIkB2p.jpg https://i.imgur.com/WQyntl8.jpg

Is my suspicion correct in assuming there's 2 pins bent the opposite direction of where they should point? Does that mean this motherboard is now a paperweight?

Planning on upgrading from an i7 to a Ryzen 7. Looks OK to me - any comments?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:18 PM PDT

I wasn't sure whether to put this under Help or Upgrade, so decided to do the former.

I've got a fairly nice gaming rig. However, the processor is quite old, meaning the motherboard is too, which is why the only RAM it accepts is DDR3.

I was looking at Amazon a few weeks back, and was suggested a Ryzen 7 2700X. Looking at it, Amazon helpfully suggested that I could get it with an Asus Prime X470-Pro motherboard, and Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB of DDR4 LPX RAM.

After some consideration, I decided I needed more RGB, and swapped the RAM out for the same make, but in white and with RGB highlights.

The parts are sitting in my Amazon cart. I waited till I got paid - that day has come and gone. Now, I'm just doing one last check before buying. Measure twice, cut once, after all.

My current build is here, while the new build is here - the changes are the processor, RAM, motherboard, and third-party processor cooler. I have a third, 2TB hard drive in the machine, but I didn't add it to the lists because I couldn't offhand remember the make or model. I was considering picking up liquid cooling, not for the performance (I don't OC), but for the sound. I'm living in Ireland. Amazon.co.uk is offering me the whole lot for around £640 (£199.99 for the RAM, £284.23 for the processor, and the remnants for the motherboard).

If I get the whole lot from Amazon, I can use a forwarding address in Northern Ireland with my Prime sub to get the stuff shipped to me before Friday (it's surprisingly hard to get stuff shipped here sometimes) - with the exception of the motherboard, which is available from Amazon for pre-order. I can pay £9 more to get it from a third-party seller, but it won't have the next-day delivery. On the one hand, that means I should have everything by the 20th of July at the very latest; on the other, that's at least a concrete date, as opposed to Amazon's "soon".

PCPartPicker has no problem with my new build except for the graphics card (which is currently fitting just fine, so no idea what that's about). Anywhere I could get the stuff cheaper? Any options that are better for roughly the same price?

Also, while my PSU is modular, I don't have the spare cables. Would they be necessary, or should I be able to go with what I have?

Looking for upgrade advice for a 5 year old PC

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:46 AM PDT

Hello all. I've been looking to squeeze a little more performance/life out of my current build. I'm not at all computer literate (built it by watching YouTube vids) If anybody could offer advice it'd be much appreciated

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. Internet browsing. Possible video editing

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1080p, 60fps, w/ highest possible game settings

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'd like to keep it below $500

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA. Happy 4th of July!!

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Updating computer parts?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:00 PM PDT

Hello! I built my PC around 2013-14 but back then I didn't have enough money to really get all the parts that I wanted, so I'm buying new parts a few at a time now when I the income. However, I'm pretty novice at computer builds and I don't know which parts are good and which are not, so I would like to ask for help on this sub.

    My specs right now are:

    CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 3.40Ghz

    8GB RAM

GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 3GB

    Motherboard: ASUSTeK P8Z77-V LX

PSU: No clue, some cheap one.

    256GB SSD

While playing games my CPU hits 100% almost all the time. I usually have good FPS but I cant play at any High or Ultra settings. If I want to keep, for instance, WoW and Youtube up at the same time, my computer almost fries.

    Thanks in advance!

    First Time 144 Hz Build

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:58 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I am not tech savvy so all suggestions are appreciated.

I am looking to build a PC solely for gaming on a 144 Hz monitor. That being said, I do not have a 144 hz monitor yet and am looking for suggestions.

I was initially looking to spend around $1500 but if it is worth it I am willing to spend more.

Should I go with the i5 or is an i7 worth it? Again it is solely for gaming.

Should I shell out some more money for a 1080 Ti instead of the 1080 below? If I am in no hurry to build the PC should I wait a bit for prices to drop? I read that prices may drop in a month or so.

Which 144 Hz monitor would you recommend?

I have a 3 terabyte HDD that I will put in alongside the SSD.

    Upgrade i5-4670K or GTX 770

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:40 AM PDT

Real simple question here. My current build has an i5-4670K and a GTX 770. I'm only planning on playing at 1080p 60 FPS, maybe 1440p 60 FPS if I upgrade my monitor later. The 770 has been mostly fine for the past few years, but the 2 GB of VRAM is starting to become an issue in newer games. I've also heard that more games are going to start using more CPU cores, so I'm not sure how much longer it will be before the 4670K is a bottleneck. Basically, which of these should I upgrade first, and what should I upgrade to?

Piecing together my build, I've compiled a few bits of advice for PCPartPicker and manufacturers

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:54 PM PDT

While I try to piece together my build I've noticed that there are some changes that PCPP and manufacturers need to make to more effectively display their product in terms of pictures, information, etc.

    1. When posting pictures of a graphics card or CPU cooler, please post at least one picture of how the product will be viewed when mounted horizontally from outside the case. Few builders mount a graphics card vertically, so there's really no point in every picture displaying the fans.
    2. PCPP, please indicate how many fans a case can use and what size. I've been looking for a case with a rear 140mm fan opening that isn't massive, but it takes forever to pick through every option when there could be a slider or checked box to the left to handle it.
    3. Manufacturers, please include more aesthetic accessories like PSU or motherboard shrouds, or even options like case door-mounted vents for low-profile CPU coolers for effective exhaust.

These have just been some of my observations/frustrations with this process. PCpartpicker (as wonderful as their site is) in general seems to be pretty lazy about how they implement new options as their site has gone largely unchanged over the last year.

CPU and GPU at around 100% usage when gaming

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:52 PM PDT

I have the 4770k which I OCed and a 1080ti. I know my GPU hitting 100% usage isn't bad when gaming so I'm not too worried. However lately I've been playing FFXV Windows Edition and noticed that my CPU is at around 90%-100% usage. The temperature isn't bad and reaches not above 60 degrees celcius. I float around upper 40s to mid 50s when playing. I don't notice any major frame drops but should I be worried that my CPU is using that much?
