I stumbled upon this sub during my lunch break at my crappy minimum wage job, and I gotta say it looks amazing. I've been on Linux for years and it was really difficult for me to get started because there weren't many resources for a little Linux newblet and it makes me happy to know that more and more resources are at the disposal of newer people coming to Linux. By no means am I an expert but I do have lots of experience and I am very excited to help out and learn here!

How do I execute a command by just typing on desktop

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:01 AM PDT

I am using GNOME 3, I vaguely remember at some point on some distro I could just start typing and a little window with what I was typing would pop up and then execute wahtever I typed after I pressed enter. This only happened when all windows were minimized or you were focused on the desktop, what is this tool called and how to I get it?

Unable to install antergos on System76 Galago pro laptop

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:10 AM PDT

Firstly I've installed antergos maybe 40 times on my desktop PC. Using the iso I downloaded in about January. When I tried this iso on my Galago pro ( laptop that comes with Ubuntu installed. By a company who love linux and sell linux only hardware) when I boot into the live USB cnchi opens up. On start once it's done checking for updates. And I go through the install but it was just not doing anything I'd click on the next button and it took about 3 minutes to get to the next page. I tried opening up the terminal and it wouldn't open giving some error about the input/output. So I downloaded the latest iso both the minimalist and the standard one. And tried it again. I got the same thing on the minimalist iso. On the 18.6 live iso I can get through part of the install but when I select which DE I want (I've tried each of the available options) and as soon as I click the next arrow cnchi closes and i can't get to the next step. Also when I open up the applications menu. All the applications are there but allot of them have no icon. And when I try to run the ones with no icon nothing happenes. I verified the iso matches the md5 from the site. It's a system76 laptop that's about a year old but is still in near new condition because I rarely use it. Has anyone I'd something similar to this? Any ideas on how I can solve it? I'm using antergos because I want to put LARBS on my laptop. If there is another way to achieve this I'll happily try it. I have had too many problems trying to install (pure) arch So I'd like to avoid that.

Edit: I tried to boot into partition 1 on my live USB as that is an option in the boot menu. Cnchi wasn't even getting past the first screen but all icons where there for the programs. I tried again booting into just the USB and was able to get past the DE screen. Was able to rank the mirrors but it would not let me choose where to install (formatting the drives) it close itself down when I tried to let cnchi decide where to install.

    Weird touchpad edge scroll behaviour

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:32 AM PDT

Hi I recently moved to Manjaro linux after using ubuntu for about 5 years. I am installing some of the applications which are default in ubuntu like nautilus file manager and evince. These have some weird scroll behaviour of which I don't know the name and hence can't search for a fix.

When scrolling with touchpad there is this accleration at the end, similar to what happens on smartphones when we give a swift swipe up/down and list gets some acceleration and scrolls a lot. I am not sure if I am explainig this correctly.

This is really annoying especially when reading PDFs. I position the page by scrolling and when I lift my finger it gets either a up of down acceleration and scrolls a little.

I would like to disable this if possible. I am not sure where I should look. Some GTK setting, application specific setting, something else?

Let me know if you need any information about my system. I couldn't figure out what would be relevant here. Thanks

    Colors in CLI

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:34 PM PDT

I've tried using Ubuntu and CentOS, in both cases my terminal is just black and white (both local and via putty), I want it to look like the commands shown on this docker page for easier reading

    https://docs.docker.com/install/linux/linux-postinstall/

On Ubuntu I've tried uncommenting force_color_prompt=yes in /.bashrc but even that does not setup the color for all the commands just for user@host part. Quite new to Linux world, any help will be appreciated.

    Debian9 Wifi

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:22 PM PDT

I used Linux Mint Cinnamon for the past year and decided to make the switch to Debian 9 Xfce. I am unable to use Wifi now. I know the card works because Wifi was working fine with LM. Command for adding up numbers on lines with similar texts

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:06 PM PDT

I am looking for a command that can help me process a text file consisting of lines with text and some associated numbers, where I need to add up the associated numbers for lines that contain identical text (example below). Is there any command that can assist in this? Preferable one that fits well into a UNIX pipeline.

    File on the following form:

    3 4 some_text
    2 6 some_text
    7 12 some_text
    12 3 some_other_text
    2 4 some_other_text

    Expected output:

    12 22 some_text
    14 7 some_other_text

    [Ubuntu] Screen flickers while gaming

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:20 AM PDT

My screen flickers during most games. It does not, however, flicker during normal desktop use.

    Graphics card: Radeon R9 390X

    I tried:

    • "sudo apt-get upgrade" just to make sure the the default drivers were up to date.

    • Installing the proprietary AMD drivers. I don't know if I simply installed them wrong, but when I did, the colors on my screen were messed up. When I tried to purge amdgpu, I could only boot in TTY mode. "startx" timed out when ran. I ended up having to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch.

    • Turning off dynamic power management ("radeon.dpm=0" in grub). While it did not fix the problem completely, it did change the symptoms. While the flickering goes away, I get a significantly lower framerate (from 120-144fps down to 20-30fps on average). I also tried "radeon.runpm=0" and "radeon.runpm=1" in the same file but neither seemed to have an effect.

    Thanks for any help.

EDIT: I should also add, the graphics card is not a new install. I've been using it with Windows for more than a year without issues.

But now it just moves, is there anyway to get back that context menu?

Transmission Daemon torrents stuck on status 'Stopped'

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:34 AM PDT

Recently switched my headless server from Windows to Linux and I'm having an issue with getting torrenting working using the Transmission CLI. I am connected to this server by SSH. I installed the CLI package and transmission-daemon (I had the GUI version installed and working before I took away the monitor). I have tweaked the settings.json so that my download directory is "torrents/", set rpc-authentication-required to false, and set peer-port-random-on-start to true in case the default port was blocked. I can add torrents but when I look at their status with transmission-remote -l they download a few MBs (2-4) then have a status Stopped. This was working in a previous attempt before I reinstalled transmission-daemon although I'm not sure what I did differently this time. Any help would be much appreciated.

Win10 Incremental Backup to Linux Mint?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:59 AM PDT

I have a music folder on my Win10 machine that I would like to backup to a Linux Mint machine over LAN. I have Samba installed and configured on the Mint machine, and I can access the home folder from my Win10 machine.

I would like to set up an incremental backup (i.e. it doesn't perform a full backup every time, only updates changes). Is there an easy way to do this on the Linux or Windows side?

I have messed with grsync a little, and I have gotten as far as copying files locally on the Mint machine. But I'm not sure what to do to copy from a network folder.

How to update Libreoffice without repositorioes?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:40 AM PDT

    Hi

I've done a manual instalation of Libreoffice becasue the version of my repositories is old. What I need to know now is how to update LibreOffice.

1 method is donwload it from the web and install it again. However I've read about some auto update feature. Is that feature only available in Windows?

I have the latest version installed but I don't find this option. In the Libreoffice website says you can configure it going to Tools/Options/Libreoffice/Online update... . But inside Libreoffice I don't have the option Online update...
