Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:44 AM PDT I was also wondering if laptop screens are standardized at all, with things like screw holes/chassis mounting points. I know there are a couple of different connectors (my laptop apparently uses a 30-pin), but other than that, what are the potential differences between panels? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:03 AM PDT Anyone else out there grabbed this yet? Omen refresh, thin bezel, 144hz g sync, GTX 1070 max q variant? Got mine from UK HP Store and it's surprisingly great! Was looking at the Gigabyte Aero 15X (which shares the same panel as the HP), MSI GS65 and Razer 15. Currently more than £500 less than all of them, for the same (and with gsync, slightly better) specs... was prepared to return it after checking it out, but struggling to find much wrong at the moment. Anyone else had any experience yet? [link] [comments] |
Need a new laptop for graphics design, photoshop, and video editing Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:41 PM PDT Right now I have a HP Probook 4540s. While it's alright with photoshop and video editing, it will frequently lag or crash--this isn't too often, but it's enough to frustrate me. I want a laptop with a high quality display, 16gb ram, and smooth performance. I'm look for something less than $900. [link] [comments] |
New Huawei Matebook D just came out this week(?) Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:04 PM PDT I've posted on here a few times over the last few days trying to find a new laptop. I had lost of options and each had compromises but I think I just found a perfect one. It's Huawei's budget version of the Matebook X Pro (which I was about 5 seconds away from buying despite my budget being <=$1000) and it looks amazing. Obviously there are a few things the X has that the D won't, but the D is the best laptop I've found and a sub $1k price range, and it's only $600 (normally $630 but reduced to $600 for launch, hence the "sale" flair). It's running Ryzens's 5 series processor which outperforms or is comparable to the Intel's 8th gen processors. I'll share some thoughts on it (picking it up tomorrow) if anyone is interested [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:04 PM PDT Background I needed to buy a laptop before college in the fall, so since Nvidia's new GPUs probably won't be out until around November, I took the plunge early so I'd have time to get everything set up and replaced if I had any problems. I will major in mechanical engineering so I needed something fast enough for that. I also game some (mostly overwatch now) so I also wanted it to be fast enough for that. I had previously considered the aero 15, GS65, and Blade 15, but decided against them (explained in more detail here). My desk setup has my laptop resting on a Cooler Master NotePal X-slim to help cool it (though I don't use the fan, I mostly got it for when I'm sitting in bed) and to give it some height and an angle. I connect it to a Pluggable dock for usb, ethernet, and a second display output for my HP 2009m. My main monitor (Acer G257HU) is connected directly though the HDMI port on the laptop because the dock takes some processing power to convert from USB to HDMI, and connecting my 1440p monitor to the dock while gaming makes it stutter. I use it with a corsair k70 and Logitech g600 when it is docked. Quality of Life The build quality of this laptop is great. There is no real flex anywhere and even the screen is pretty rigid. The keyboard feels crisp and the trackpad is exceptional (about equal to the touchpad on the macbook pro 2014 I tried). I tried out a GS65 at best buy, and the flexing on that was unacceptable for me; it even made the keyboard feel bad. Also, the fingerprint sensor on the power button of the xps is fast and convenient. The battery life is quite good. I haven't done any special benchmarks on it, but with regular web browsing with about 30 active tabs open, I was on track to get 7-9 hours of life from it. The port selection on the laptop is adequate for me because of my dock. It has one fewer usb port than the others, but two USB A ports and a thunderbolt are enough for me on the go, and it is a non-issue when at my desk since other laptops would require docks for me anyways. Display The screen of this laptop is great for me. It is bright, vibrant and color accurate. It has a matte coating which along with its 400 nits of brightness make it useable outside, which I don't think would be the case for the others I looked at. It doesn't have any fancy features like a 144Hz refresh rate or touch screen, but as I am gaming on an external monitor, this isn't an issue for me. There is no notable backlight bleed; it is only visible on a black screen in the dark. Performance The XPS 15 has a 8750H and a 1050ti max-q, so it won't perform as well in games as the other options, but it does perform adequately for my needs. Without undervolting, the cpu throttled some so I get around 6800 in 3dmark firestrike, with the GPU temps peaking around 76 C and the CPU peaking at 99C. In prime95, the CPU temps peaked at only 92C and stabilized at around 83C. After undervolting the CPU and GPU, nothing throttled; I got around 7050 in 3dmark firestrike with the GPU temp peaking at 71C and the CPU peaking at 95C. In prime95, the CPU peaked at 91C and settled at around 83C after undervolting, so no real improvement there. As I mentioned earlier, the game I mainly play now is overwatch and this laptop is fast enough for that. In my opinion, the best settings for it with my setup are 1440p, medium settings with 100% scaling. When at these settings I get a consistent FPS of around 65. Sometimes it did crash or suddenly dip down to 10 FPS for a few seconds, but I haven't had this happen since I updated the bios of the laptop and undervolted the GPU. I used CrystalDiskMark to benchmark the terabyte SSD, and here are my results. It feels slightly faster than the sata SSD in my old desktop, but its real importance is that it shouldn't start feeling slow over time, which a lower end drive might. Misc A common complaint about the xps 15 is coil whine, but mine didn't have any, and neither did the 9550 or 9560 that members of my family own. The webcam is as you would expect; adequate but unexceptional quality with an annoying angle. I won't be using it much so I don't mind its placement because of the smaller bezels it allows for. The power cable is quite nice. This laptop is unfortunately too power-hungry to be powered over usb-c, but the connector they include has an led around the rim so you can find it in the dark. Overall While the other laptops all have advantages over the XPS 15, the dell also has its upsides; most notably, the price. I got my xps 15 with a terabyte SSD, but if I had gotten it with a 512gb one, it would've been $1485 before tax which is too much cheaper than the alternatives in my opinion. The aero 15 and blade 15 are nice looking options, but not enough that I would pay more than $500 extra for them. If I do need extra GPU performance, I'll just get an external 1170 (MSI has great deals on external GPUs) and get my performance that way. The XPS 15 isn't the perfect laptop for everyone (no laptop is) but it is a solid option for many, especially those who don't want a laptop with snakes or dragons on the back. It doesn't have the graphical capabilities of some other laptops, but if a 1050ti is enough for you, it is a great option. [link] [comments] |
Omen 15T vs Pavilion 15T gaming? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:45 AM PDT Deciding between these two. With the Omen 15T, for $999, I can get:
With The Pavilion 15T Gaming, For ~$1050, I can get:
What's the better choice? I haven't really heard anything about the Pavilion before, and I know the Omen was a pretty good deal, but for $50 more I can drop the gamer aesthetic and get a 4K panel, in exchange for losing 3gb of vram. [link] [comments] |

Review of HP Envy x360 13.3 - AMD Ryzen 7 Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:21 PM PDT I noticed that there seems to be a lack of HP Envy 13 x360 AMD Ryzen 7 reviews on here and some people were interested in knowing more about them. I picked one up today at Best Buy (Model 13M-AG0002DX - https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-x360-2-in-1-13-3-touch-screen-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-8gb-memory-256gb-solid-state-drive-hp-finish-in-dark-ash-silver/6237360.p?skuId=6237360) and can give a bit of an unprofessional review. If you have any questions I can try to answer them. Let's dive in! Starting with the specs on this Best Buy model... the Best Buy page may be a bit wrong and misleading so here is a list of what this thing actually has:
- 4 Core, 8 Thread - 2.20 GHz base, 3.8 Ghz Turbo - Vega 10 @ 1300 MHz - 1 GB of RAM for graphics
- According to Windows, 2/2 slots used (dual channel)
Packaging This HP AMD Envy 13 x360 comes in a very light and well packaged box, a bit large for the laptop. The laptop itself comes in a plastic protective sleeve with some Styrofoam on top and a protector between the keys and screen. A power brick can be found contained in its own box inside a plastic bag. Unveiling Upon taking out the laptop it's easy to tell that it's a premium machine. The chassis, sporting the HP premium logo in chrome, feels good and soft to the touch, but is stable and firm when using it. I found no creeks or bending and the hinge feels well built. There are two grip strips on the bottom which hold the laptop down to a desk really well. When opening the laptop you'll find a keyboard that nicely fills the width of the laptop. Key presses feel good and are very quiet; they have a bit of a mechanical feel without the noise. The backlighing is well done, however some keys have a bit more light coming around them than others; it seems like some of the LEDs underneath stick out more than others. Speaking of width, this laptop is tiny considering its screen size! The WLED Gorilla Glass screen has very small bezels on the sides allowing for a narrow laptop and the whole thing is very thin and light. The trackpad is also a good size considering this is a 13" laptop. The trackpad has a bit of a metal feeling to it with no friction. It's the kind of style I like, but I know many people who would prefer it to be rougher. Unfortunately HP decided to stick a ton of stickers on the inside of this thing, but they easily peel off. I chose to keep my Ryzen and Radeon stickers however. Bloat As per usual for most laptops this one comes with some bloatware. There are about 8 different HP applications/services, MCAfee Anti-Virus, and some Windows Games. Most of these are easy to remove and actually do not slow this PC down much due to the Ryzen 7, quick RAM and SSD. I have kept the HP services on for now as I do not yet know what all might be needed. Performance - The laptop can boot up and be on the desktop in around 10 seconds and has very snappy performance throughout Windows. - The first thing I did was fire up some StarCraft II. At max graphics, hosting the matches, this laptop was able to pull off 30 FPS at the beginning of a 4v4 match. During the busiest parts of the match it would dip down to about as low as 10 FPS. StarCraft II can be a good benchmark as it really only runs on 2 threads (most of the load is on one thread). I found by adjusting graphics settings it would make a bit of a difference so I'm sure on a lower graphics setting it would be able to handle it better, because it doesn't seem to be getting CPU bottlenecked. - I also played Cities Skylines with a 60K population, and a ton of vehicles on the roads at max graphics. The laptop was able to get between 32-12 FPS. - I then ran the 3DMark Firestrike benchmark and got 1691, which is not exactly great for a 2700u. -I also ran two Geekbench benchmarks: CPU https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/8849590 Single: 3804, Multi: 8818 Compute https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/compute/2566498 OpenCL: 37616 - Running the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark at max resolution, just over Medium quality settings, netted a 13.37 FPS average (max 79.95 FPS, min 3.18 FPS). - At one point I copied a 4 GB ZIP from one part of the SSD to another and it averaged about 200-250 mb/s. - Additionally the wireless seems to have a good range, at least better than my previous laptop. This laptop can pretty easily pick up my wireless network outside my house, almost to the edges of my city lot property. Throughout all these tests the laptop did get decently warm at times, but never" burning hot" and stayed pretty quiet. Note that all of this is using the old 17.7 AMD drivers. I have heard if you force the later 18.x drivers that it can perform better in many games and benchmarks. It's also worth mentioning that the laptop never crashed nor has it ever crashed yet as of writing this. It's clear to see that the benchmarks are not crazy impressive considering the specs and that this laptop is probably limited by heat and 15W as the 25W Ryzen APUs tend to perform much better. Screen The brightness level on the screen is okay outside, but may not be great in direct sunlight. To my eye the colours, clarity and contrast look excellent. Honestly the blacks look close to even my LG OLED. The touch aspect of the screen feels and performs about as well as a smartphone. Because this is an x360 model the screen can fold all the way backwards to turn it into a tablet. It transforms pretty easily without issue. Audio The audio out of the headphone jack seems good, about in-line with almost anything else. Perhaps not quite as good as my LG V30, but that has a Hi-Fi Quad DAC. The actual speakers sound very clear and have pretty decent highs. They don't distort with the lows and seem to have better bass than most laptops. Compared to say a bluetooth speaker this would blow away most of them, in comparison to my Denon+Soundstage sound system it obviously sounds flatter. It also comes with an HP/B&O equalizer which is a pretty sweet extra feature. Battery life I haven't done enough to really give a good solid number with this yet. It seems to take a couple hours to charge and I estimate I can probably get somewhere around 5 hours. It's worth noting that when charging the powerbrick does get quite hot, much hotter than my previous laptop. Final Comments That's about all I have to say at this point. Overall I think it's a super great laptop with some unfortunately slower than expected gaming benchmarks. I will certainly be keeping it though. Post a question if you got one and I can try to answer it if I can. [link] [comments] |
Can the GL552VW support a 4k@60hz monitor through either USB-C or USB3.0? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:12 AM PDT My Dell latitude E7240, when I try and boot it up by pressing the button, doesn't seem to reach post. The power button lights up and led seems functional... I have tried several methods I found online: I tried taking the battery out and pressing power button for 30s I tried pressing FN+ F12 and the battery led flashes, according to Dell that's to do with RAM, thus I went and replaced the RAM with one I knew was definitely functional, but no avail To make sure it's not a display issue, I connected it to my TV and tried to do display mode by using keyboard button, still nothing 😭. So I was hoping you guys would be able to help me with any other solutions? P.s I have contacted Dell support and they said I have to send the laptop to them, but their pricing is too high P.s I have already had the motherboard replaced by them a year ago due to thermal issues. Getting a notebook and turning my gaming laptop into a mobile workstation Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:08 AM PDT Currently I have a bulky gaming laptop and I'm interested in getting a lighter notebook. And then having the notebook for less intensive things. Has anyone tried doing something like this? If so, has it worked well? [link] [comments] |

Refund on a newly bought, yet used, laptop? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:27 AM PDT I'll cut right to it: I decided to cheap out on a laptop (HP Windows 10 with an AMD 9 processor), and realised I'd paid the price for it (ironically) when I tried to open more than 2 tabs on Chrome. Now I know that, technically, to be able to get a refund I can't have used the product, which I have. To get around this I was thinking of system restarting the laptop, repackaging it and sending it back as an "unused" product. Will this work? I've read a lot of conflicting opinions from what little info I could find online. Also I know I could call up customer service, level with them and hope they take pity, but I'd rather leave that as a plan B. P.S. I'm in the UK Thanks [link] [comments] |
Where to buy HP Envy x360 15z Ryzen 5 256GB SSD? Amazon and Best Buy both sell only a 128GB SSD (which is SATA btw) which is weird since it's not in the configuration options in the hp store. [link] [comments] |

GPUs will decline in price by 20% in July, will this pass on to Laptop prices? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 04:39 PM PDT I'm in the market to get a new laptop, but I've been trying to wait for the new GTX 1180 to be released so the 1080s, 1070s, etc will drop in price. I just read earlier that GPUs will decline in price by 20% next month, can we expect this to pass along to laptop prices which house those GPUs, or will this only be reflected in GPUs that are sold individually to people that are building PCs?
