    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000 USD, USA. Cheaper is better if possible since I'm trying to save the most money possible.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Prefer 2 in 1 form factor and good battery life. Specifications are still important though.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not awfully important, but of course lighter and thinner is better.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, Linux, Mac OS please.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be bringing my desktop to do any gaming I'd do. I'd just need the laptop to be really good at taking notes. Also going to be using it to do basic homework. Stuff like papers using LaTeX and Visual Studio Code, some programming work, videos and surfing the internet, etc. No games necessary except maybe like a flash game or something haha. No CAD work on it either, I'll have my desktop for that.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No requirement for games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Going to be using an external keyboard just about all the time so keyboard is not important. In fact a keyboard that I can put away or detach is best (hence 2 in 1). Also good touchscreen and support for active stylus is important (notetaking).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for something that can last me a while and is lightweight (not in weight as in being heavy) in software sense without much bloatware.

    Thank you very much!

I want to either get the old model 15 inch version or the newer 13 inch version. They are currently both about 1500 at bestbuy, which one would be better for a college student that wants to be able to play civ games and run ableton?

Laptop focus on gaming (GTX 1050TI + no SSD vs GTX 1050 + 128 GB SSD)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:11 PM PDT

For me, I have already narrowed it down to 2 laptops. I just want to know which one is better. Is it 1050TI + no SSD vs 1050 with 128 GB SSD?

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      ~$1200, Asia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      Best specifications.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not much.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14/15.5 inch. Preferably the latter.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Purely for gaming. I do want to play the good ones from last few years.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      60 FPS is a must.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
None of them are much important for me.

Need a laptop for mid-to-high end gaming, paired with a GTX 1070 or higher and....

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:46 AM PDT

I also need advice on which CPU i need to look out for (any suitable i7 processor im guessing) Plis i require 16 GB RAM at least (8GB just doesnt cut it anymore).

P.S- I dont mind buying an AMD graphics card/CPU too, but I'm not really sure if any AMD card outperforms the Nvidia 1070 at a similar price range.

Commuting to college, have a powerful pc at home, price range $400 - $700.

I like 13 to 15 inch laptops, and they don't have to be 2 in 1s but they are welcomed. Just need a laptop for portable work for college if you get me. Being able to play rocket league would be a plus but not necessary. Thanks.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking into an Alienware for just under the 4000$ cap that has vr and 4k capabilities, but I don't know how reliable or recommended Alienware is. If someone could recommend me a similarly priced but better performing laptop, that would be wonderful. Or if Alienware is worth their buck that advice would also be helpful.

USA, <$1000. Looking for a laptop to use that's reliable for a long term.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'd prefer <$1,000, but willing to spend up to $1000 for quality and a laptop that I can have forever. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I currently have a touch screen Yoga 3 14, it's still functioning, but the screen cracked and now touch screen isn't an option. I realized I don't need it. Good battery life would be good, but I'll be able to charge it/ use it as a desktop. Best specs for price is probably 2nd to battery.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I really like a thin/light laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer Windows as I'm used to it, but I'm willing to try a chromebook, if anyone recommends that.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, but if it's light and thin and has a larger screen, that's okay.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't plan on doing much of that, mostly word processing, research, e-mail, and Netlix hopefully on a big screen but should be able to watch comfortably on the laptop. But being able to download stuff would be good

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I hope the keyboard is comfortable, reliability is huge. Touch screen I can live without.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm kind of lost about what I'm looking for. I've got this Yoga 3 14, i5, 8 gb ram. it's been fine for me, but the screen cracked and it's a bit annoying. Just looking for something new.

Need a laptop for GIS and programming work (USA $1000 budget)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:54 PM PDT

Hello, I am needing a new laptop to last me the next several years. I'm studying geographic information systems (GIS) at college and beginning to do research involving programming. I'm almost done with my Bachelor's but may end up going to graduate school. If I do, my laptop will need to last through that.

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $1000 and USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specifications for the money but not something that will die after a couple hours use. Don't really care for 2 in 1.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

The lighter the better. I'll be carrying it in my backpack a lot.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-15 inches

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Build quality is important. Don't want to have to get another laptop because this one broke.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be doing GIS work with some programming involved. I'll be using Microsoft Office of course, but I'll also be using ArcGIS, RStudio, and various Google applications.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

If you feel that a different kind of laptop (such as a different operating system or above my budget) is best for me, feel free to let me know!

Need a new laptop for work in web development and light gaming/drawing

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 05:01 PM PDT

Hi all, I am in need of a new laptop for web development that can perform well when playing games like Witcher and Monster Hunter (does not have to be at the ultimate graphic setting--), vibrant color display that doesn't distort at angles.

*Total budget and country of purchase:** $1200 USD, purchase in USA

*Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?** battery life to the max.

*How important is weight and thinness to you?** VERY, my current machine weighs like a brick, so I would really appreciate a lighter laptop.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13'-15", not much bigger.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Run games like Witcher, Skyrim, Monster Hunter;

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I'm not too particular on this, I just want the machine to be strong enough to run the games mentioned before smoothly, I can compromise graphic quality for better game play.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I have small hands/short fingers, so a keyboard that is less spaced out would be amazing. Not touchscreen if possible.

[US] Need to buy a laptop before July 6th, HELP needed.

Hello guys I'm from India and I got my relatives staying at Irvine, California and I want them to bring the new Dell G7 with 128gb SSD n 1TB HDD, but they have their flight on July 7th.

Where will I be able to get the particular laptop? I think the variant with just the 256gb SSD is available at the local Best Buy, is it possible to add up a hard disk later?

Also there's a way to get Global Warranty when I buy something from Dell, will it work if I buy it from Best Buy?

any other stores where I can get this variant, or anything better at this price point.

Gaming laptop that doesn't look like a gaming laptop

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:00 AM PDT

I don't like laptops that look like alien ships and flat out just tell people that you're a gamer. I can understand the trend but it's just not for me

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* ~$1000 in the US

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* Best specifications for the money. Just not the XPS because of its camera position.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Average. Just need to be able to carry it in a backpack and take around.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* 14"-15.6"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* Going to be coding and gaming on the side

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* Don't have any in particular but a laptop that can handle games if I ever decide to deeply get into one.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* Good SSD, backlit keyboard, and good build quality

I'm looking for a laptop that can handle gaming but not look like a gaming laptop. I was looking at the Lenovo Ideapad 720s 14 but I feel like there are better options out there. I was also looking at the Sager NP4850 but it looks too much like a gaming laptop from the cover. I also looked at the Asus Zenbook UX331UN but the top cover shows too many fingerprints because of it's blue design. It would also be preferable to not have a glossy keyboard and to have decently thin bezels. I've seen people recommend the Acer Swift but the bezels just kill it, in my perspective. I'm also down to look at uncommon laptops from less known brands. Never really heard of the Sager laptops yet they look pretty decent.

Looking for a laptop for college (Duke ECE/CS major)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 07:32 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

$1,000-$1,400 (though this isn't strict), United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 Form Factor: I feel like it would be cool to have, but definitely not something I would sacrifice performance or battery life to have.

Good Battery Life: I'll be away from my dorm a good bit so 8hrs minimum, preferred around 12

How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as I can carry it around easily, it fits in a backpack (Website says 15" sleeve, North Face Borealis), and does not look ugly I'm good.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Computer Science major so Linux is preferred (would like opinions on which OS is best for CS though)

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" max physical size (bookbag) and 1920x1080 minimum resolution

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    CAD and gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

10xx would be cool, but I'm not looking to mod games a lot or play super new games because I'm not sure how much time I will have for it, gaming is something I'm mentioning for more information but it is not a giant concern. I'd like to get better than console graphics and FPS but again, don't really care too much

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good backlit keyboard for on the go, looking to get external mouse and keyboard for dorm room, durability is important, touch screen would be cool but not a priority

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would like an anti-glare screen as being able to use my laptop outside without squinting would be great. My school pays for software like Microsoft Office and Adobe so laptops that cost more because of pre-loaded software aren't as desirable.

    Laptop for 2D game development

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:59 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,500 US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be nice, but not necessary. I'll probably only use the tablet mode occasionally for light drawing, reading, streaming shows, and studying Japanese. I'll mostly be using this while it's plugged in and maybe some really light programs while away, so battery life isn't too much of an issue for me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'll be holding it in my lap most of the time, so something light weight would be preferred. Thinness isn't that important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Unity 2D, Visual Studio

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? High setting gaming isn't the main focus, but 2D games at 60 fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard for programming

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Since I'll be holding it in my lap most of the time, something that has low overheating issues would be preferred.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 compatible with 60 Hz screen?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 09:07 AM PDT

i wanna buy a pc and i posted the specs in another post a couple of days ago. the problem is that the pc which im buying (Asus ROG gl702vi-mh72) is only showing with a 60 hz screen online (and a gtx 1080), and the 120 hz screen (with same other specs) is called (Asus ROG gl702vi-wb74). the guy that is selling me the laptop sent me a pic showing me the first name (mh72) yet he swears to me that its a 120 hz screen (which i didnt find anything about online), and he also claims that the 1080 chip is not compatible with a 60 Hz screen to begin with. hes showing me that the online prices are 3,000$ and hes offering it for a 2,200$ (BRAND NEW). i want the laptop im buying to be a 1080 and a 120 Hz screen. the mh72 costs 1,750$ online. so is he lying? do i buy it? are they compatible? i need to make a decision today... WELP!!!!

dell 7577 vs lenovo y720 which on to get ?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 07:20 PM PDT

hi all , i move a lot , so a gaming desktop isn't sa choice to me .

i decided to buy a gaming laptop and i have settled on those two with these specs

    Dell 7577

    Cpu: i7-7700hq

    Gpu: gtx1060 max-q

    Ram: 16 gb

    Storage : 1tb HDD + 256 ssd

    + UHD screen

    lenovo y720

    Cpu: i7-7700hq

    Gpu: gtx1060

    Ram: 16 gb

    Storage : 2tb HDD + 256 ssd

I want it to last at least 4-5 years from now . they are about the same price and they are the only ones available in my country . i will be using it mainly for heavy gaming . i wont bust every single option in the game to ultra . (coming from intel hd 4000 ) i will be happy to run it on any setting . i chose the Gtx 1060 so it can last me a good while before it comes obsolete

i have heard really good reviews about the lenovo y720 and i have also seen really bad ones . same is for the dell 7577

so what do you guys think ?

sorry for my bad grammar in advance

Looking for a long-lasting laptop for grad school

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:37 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: * $1000 - 1500, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. It would be nice to use a stylus on the screen for taking notes and drawing pictures. Great battery life isn't a high priority but would be nice.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important. I have a large backpack that can handle a lot

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Prefer windows but not a dealbreaker

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 15" since that's what my current laptop is

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. My wife may do some personal photo and video editing, but nothing regularly. I know I'd like to play games, but I don't think I'll have time to ever play games while I'm in school

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable is my top priority. Comfortable keyboard is probably second behind reliability. No need for a cd drive. I have a wireless mouse already. Touch screen with stylus would be nice but not a must-have

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm starting my first year of optometry school in 6 weeks and need to replace the laptop I used for undergrad. School lasts for 4 years, so I'd want it to last at least that long, both in terms of battery life and processor life. Is it true a quad-core processor will outlast a dual-core? Would a gaming laptop not used for gaming last a while?

Photographer changing careers and getting into programming looking for a $1k~ laptop.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 06:45 PM PDT

    Appreciate any help.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

UK or Brazil. You can suggest US models and I'll Google equivalents on my own.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Out of those, battery life and specs. Don't care about 2-in-1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important. I exclusively use my desktop at home and the laptop will be mostly used during my new programming classes.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Preferably Windows. Or Linux if it saves me money. Trying to stay away from Macbooks, though.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14" is ideal. I can do with 13" or 15" if they're thin and light, however.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Even though I'm studying programming now, I'm also a professional photographer and video editor, however, the most in that area I'll be using the laptop for is to do Lightroom RAW editing. So some power is good but it doesn't need to be an editing machine.

4K would be a nice extra to have.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If it could play Diablo 3 or Path of Exile at low-medium settings and 60fps, that would be a nice bonus. Gaming is definitely not a priority, however.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

That's the most important thing to me: comfort. The #1 reason I hate most laptops are due to back trackpads.

A good trackpad is #1 priority to me (my reference of a good trackpad are Macbook Pros but would prefer a cheaper Windows/Linux laptop with a trackpad as good).

Next priority is screen: I'm fine with 1080p (4K would be a nice bonus) but it needs to be IPS and have good neutral colors and white balance. Again, Macbook Pros are my reference for good screens but I'm mostly hoping for a Linux/Windows alternative with a screen as good.

Third priority is weight/size. I'll be taking that with me daily to my classes and I have a bad back.

After all that, I value performance above any other features. Don't care about touchscreen, 2-in-1, overly powerful GPUs.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I feel I've said everything, but to summarize:

I'm looking for something around $1k, around 14", needs to be light and thin, have a good and big trackpad and good IPS screen.

Having 4k would be a good bonus but I can do without. I'd also like at least an i5 but an i7 is ideal. Would also prefer 16GB RAM over 8GB if possible within my budget.

    Is there something for me?

tldr: $1k windows laptop, needs good trackpad, ips screen and to be thin/light.
