Are the Windows Vista activation servers still up? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:33 AM PDT Sorry is this is the wrong sub for this, but I have an old laptop that I would like to install vista business on (it has a coa for Vista business on the bottom), but I wanted to make sure I won't have too much trouble activating it before I install. Trying to update windows - Keeps failing. Resetting the installation a couple times. Posted: 02 Jul 2018 06:55 PM PDT Before giving me the message "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes made." Then I go to windows defender to check for updates and it gives me the same update. When I go to installation history, it says I successfully did that update (for about 3 months it's been happening but I just noticed it now). It keeps offering me the same KB4103727 update. I just tried removing the last update installed, but it's still doing the same thing. I used windows trouble shooter, and it didn't help, as it continued to do the same problem. I don't know what else I can do. My windows is so out of date at this point, and I'd like it to be current. [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:20 PM PDT My sister recently bought a Chromebook due to its cheapness and apparent usefulness. However, once she began using it, she quickly wanted to swap back over to Windows. Only problem is, we can't get her a new computer, and the only option I can think of is installing the Windows OS on this computer. There is an issue I have come across while do this. The computer's local storage totals about 1.9 GB, due to Chromebooks using primarily cloud storage. That leaves only one of three options.
The only one that appears to be viable is option 3, but I have tried it twice now, and for some reason I can't get it to work. Whenever I prepare a bootable drive (not sure if I'm doing it correctly), I go into the Chromebook's developer mode and use Ctrl + L (which runs the external drive) and all I receive is two high-pitched beeps. I have no clue as to where to go from here, so if anyone could help, that would be great. [link] [comments]
Unable to open programs through search Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:23 PM PDT Does anyone know how to fix this? https://i.imgur.com/J53MJzI.png It's been driving me nuts for months now and no matter how many times I redo my index, Windows still does not appear to find some programs I search for, even though they pop up in search. I have the same problem with launching git bash (even though I'm able to launch git cmd and git gui through search..it's in the same fcking folder), SourceTree, Visual Studio, and a bunch of other random things. Windows Server 2016 for personal use ? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:44 PM PDT Hello, I want to install WinServer but for personal daily use. What prompted this crazy idea ? I'm running Linux for this past year, with Win7 DualBoot (for photoshop, office, and some occasional games). Before that I had Win10 Pro, which after some tuning was doing fine at first, but with the unstoppable stream of updates I started having some bugs (visual ones with Firefox, forced restarts, lag when the browser is the only app open ...) and this prompted the rage quit and switching to Linux (which has been nothing but smooth so far). I now planning to switch to .NET software developing (internship) and I'd need a newer Windows version to support some software/functionalities. I read that WinServer supports all the stuff supported on Win10, but isn't bloated with unnecessary software (Cortana, WinStore ...) and I hope some control over the updates. So is there a way to tune WinServer 2016 for daily use or is it a madman's idea ? If so, what do I need to know/do ? And can WinServer give me the stability that I was used to with Win7, or that shipped has sailed ? PS: Is there any difference between Win10 Pro & Entreprise, especially on how much control will you have over your OS config? Thank you so much. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jul 2018 05:14 PM PDT Hello, I would like to find a program that lets me emulate a webcam but instead of a video feed I would like it to be a picture. I know I can do this with programs like xSplit and OBB but i'm looking for something less GPU and CPU intense. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jul 2018 02:54 PM PDT My computer has been attempting to update Windows 10 for the past three weeks or so. The first time I tried, it started updating and stopped at 35%, restarted and proceeded to undo the changes. Now it only will get to about 19% then restart and undo the changes. I've tried running the troubleshooter and it says it fixes whatever problem is stopping it from updating but once i try to update after that, it goes back to doing the same thing. When I first built my computer, I didn't have this issue. It would update fine but for some reason it won't install this update and I can't figure out what to do. Am I going to have to do a clean install? [link] [comments]
Why Sleep Mode uses Hard Drive like Hibernate? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 02:48 AM PDT Hi, I'm having a problem when waking up from Sleep mode. I disable Hybrid Sleep but still recovering after Sleep uses Hard Drive like there is no tomorrow. In my other computers recovering from Sleep is instantaneous and uses no Hard Drive at all, all is placed on RAM only! So, Why Sleep Mode uses Hard Drive like Hibernate? Thanks [link] [comments]
How do I customize the entire sidebar on Win 10 Pro? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 09:31 AM PDT My quickaccess is fine, then I have Creative Cloud Files which I want to move to the bottom, and then completely remove OneDrive and so on. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jul 2018 05:09 AM PDT I got an update last night and ran it before I went to bed. Started my computer up to a completely fresh installation of windows with no restore points, like I've never used it before. Don't really care at all about any of that because the only files I care about are backed up on Onedrive. Issue is it takes an extremely long time to do literally anything, I spent at least 15 minutes waiting for Settings to open, Microsoft Edge only started working about 10 minutes ago (after waiting for just more than an hour). Trying to open task manager brings up a network error saying the name might be different or the program may not be installed properly, and all diagnosis tools have an error preventing them from starting. I can't access my HDD either, it brings up a message box saying C:/ is not accessible and NTFS is displayed where storage capacity should be. EDIT:: now my PC is performing far better than it has done for months, discovered that I "have" admin rights but can't use them for anything. [link] [comments]
I forgot the password for my bootcamp windows 10 partition Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:52 AM PDT I will send real money to whoever helps me unlock it. I found a program called PCUnlocker that supposedly can reset the password, but you can't run bios on bootcamp Windows, so I have no way of starting from a USB, and my computer doesn't have an optical drive.. so I bought an optical drive and CDRWs, but I guess I need DVDRWs, so I googled some more and ended up in bootcamp/windows/system32, trying to use terminal for the first time.. [Computer:~ Alec$ mv Utilman.exe Utilman_backup.exe mv: rename Utilman.exe to Utilman_backup.exe: No such file or directory Not to mention Utilman.exe happens to be read-only.. tried and failed to fix that with [chflags -R nouchg /path/etc/blah/blah/blah and [SetFile -a l Utilman.exe I have no idea if this pcunlocker program works or if i can even get bootcamp windows to boot a DVD from an external optical drive, but if I can't fix this by tomorrow night, i'm going out and buying DVDs.. W10, Windows Defender Antivirus found threats Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:50 PM PDT This spam has been bothering me for a month now. Every single day, between 9PM and midnight, I get FIFTEEN different LOUD PINGS that Windows Defender Antivirus, WHICH IS DISABLED, has found threats. The folder the threats are in is work related, and I have placed it in the exclusion list. I have disabled all sound notifications. But EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, NO MATTER WHAT I'M DOING AT THAT TIME, BETWEEN SIX AND FIFTEEN PINGING POPUPS WARN ME THAT THERE ARE THREATS. HOW THE HELL DO I DISABLE THIS!? [link] [comments]
W7 Home or Prem ISO in ENG, PL and GER, how to get it? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 09:16 AM PDT Someone hired me for a project, can't name the details but it's in Germany and Poland. I don't know what they need and if they want to connect all PCs to the server (if they even want a server) etc. So I need to make sure I cover everything. The best case for that would be a W7 ISO which contains the Home and Pro version in English, Polish and German. Is it possible to obtain such an ISO? preferable as a Download and without any scam. Use OEM Windows on another device? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 02:52 AM PDT Hey, I have an (relativ) old, slow Laptop with Windows 10 preinstalled. I had the idea to login with an Microsoft Account to link the Windows version and install Linux instead. Can I use this Windows version linked to my Microsoft account on another Device? I ask because a relative of mine want's to build a gaming PC, and by this he could save some money. [link] [comments]
How do I stop games disabling the start key Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:22 PM PDT Some games disable the start key when they run. I believe they do this because (while I can't see how) people sometimes press the start key by accident and it result in the game no longer being in the foreground and the player needing to go back to the game to continue. The annoying thing is that I have never had this issue of accidental start-pressing, and due to workflow reasons and what I do, I often leave games running in the background (recently, GTA5). But due to their start-disabling feature, when I do this, my start key does not work anymore. I find this very frustrating, as I use the start-key all the time. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? I'm using Windows Server 2016 datacenter, so I don't have any "gaming" options in the settings menu, at least that I am aware of. I want to really find away around this issue, that does not include me closing games. Just to be clear - I can get out of games fine. The problem is that the disable-start-key persists when the game is just in the background and I am using other software on my computer. I do a lot of work that requires simulations, and thus every 15-20 minutes I might have a few minutes of time where I wait for results, and doing something like just wondering around in GTA5 is a great way to fill those minutes of deadtime. But given I only have a few minutes, I don't have time to start up a game, load it, play, save, close again. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:51 AM PDT I have a 3 or 4 year old laptop it's an Asus rog and when it boots up I get the Asus logo a black screen flashes another Asus logo then an all black screen with just a cursor on it. If I'm lucky I can some how open up narrator and I can always open winpeshl.exe but I can't open task manager and I'm not able to us ctrl alt delete or ctrl shift delete. Any advice would be sweet. I tried booting into safe mode but it didn't work. Also it's probably an important factor that I don't have much at my disposal at the time being since I'm deployed and I only used this laptop for the movies I have installed. Movies my family sends me and 2k18 on steam. [link] [comments]
