Got a new modem and upgraded my internet plan from 60 mbps to 100, speed test is all over the place.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:37 PM PDT

As soon as I got it installed, http://www.speedtest.net/# showed 200 mbps.

    A few minutes later, 120.

    Then 80, 60, 50..

Now it ranges from 16 all the way to 30 with a few 60s and the occasional 80 on the 5 ghz network. What gives?

    Before I upgraded I got a consistent 60 mbps

    Strict NAT type when wired

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:21 PM PDT

Here's my issue. On my xbox, when im on wifi, my nat type will be open, but if i plug my ethernet cable in, it'll turn it to strict. The real issue lies in my computer. it's not a laptop and doesnt have anything to connect to the wifi, so i have to use my ethernet cable. Its super annoying cause i cant join my friends at all. When i called my ISP they didn't even know what a NAT was so thats a dead end. my router is Fast 5250. I may have found a solution online, this guy had the same issue as me, but the answer is super cryptic to me, as i suck balls at computer related stuff.

Here was the other guy's post: https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/3q7p5y/tech_nat_open_when_wireless_strict_when_wired/

and here's what i assume is the answer to my problem: " The ports were probably all forwarding to your wireless cards MAC address, giving you an open NAT. The problem is, the Ethernet port will have a different MAC address, so you'll need to go and tweak your port forwarding settings a bit."

now, i dont get like 10 different terms in the sentence. what's a port and a MAC address? how do i change my port forwarding settings?

    thanks guys

TP-Link WLAN adapter stopped working for router WLAN, still works with mobile phone hotspot

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:23 PM PDT

Hello, I recently purchased this WLAN adapter for my desktop PC (Win10 fresh installation). After installation it was able to connect to my router and I had internet access for a few days. Now it suddenly stopped working (I can't think of anything that could have caused it), it connects to the router, but I don't have internet access ("Connected, no internet access"). But it only does not work if I connect with the router, it still works with my mobile phone hotspot without issues.

    What I already did:

    • checked if IPv4 IP and DNS settings are on automatic
    • ipconfig -renew
    • windows network reset
    • reinstalled device and driver
    • restarted pc
    • restarted router

The WLAN network is working properly, I am connected with my laptop which does have internet access. I also tried making a hotspot with the laptop while being connected to the router and then connecting the desktop PC to the laptop hotspot. But it ended up the same as directly connecting to the router.

    Screenshot of ipconfig -all

    Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Solved it by plugging the adapter into an USB 3.0 socket, I switched it between two 2.0 before, both of which did not work.

    Need advice on PingPlotter graphs

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:05 PM PDT

    Hello,

I've been encountering ping spikes in one of the games that I play.. one thing led to another and here I am trying to learn how to analyze PingPlotter graphs

Here is the graph in question: https://i.imgur.com/NFBpEzC.png

I don't think I'm breaking any sidebar rules here, although I do apologize in advance if I am.

Please let me know if my concerns/assumptions are on the right track:

The first hop may indicate a problem between the user and the gateway, either a wiring issue and/or a software/hardware issue with the modem and/or router as it should be consistently low ~1ms

The second hop ping spike should not be a huge concern as the highest ping spike recorded doesn't travel further down and may just be indicative of a busy/congested node

The third hop may be a culprit for jitter as the highest latency was recorded at 29.9, and appeared again down the next hop (4).

The fifth hop (the end node for my ISP) appears to have a fair amount of jitter that appears to persist to either the second last or last node

The huge spike in the very last hop could indicate a problem on their end, or it could be completely harmless (i.e. server is busy and decides to backlog low-priority pings) and there would basically be no way to find out which is true

    In addition:

    • Is the 0.1% packet loss a cause for concern? I play a lot of FPS and I don't experience any rubberbanding or recorded loss (e.g. in the net graph in CSGO), I googled a bit on this topic and it seems theres a lot of mixed answers (some think <1% is fine, others say 0.1)
    • What are some key patterns that indicate the problem is likely with your ISP?
    • Is there anything here that raises any concerns or should be brought up with my ISP etc.

I just started looking stuff up today so please excuse and correct me on any terminology I am incorrectly using

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you

Fast Upload Speed, Slow Download - Please Help

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:00 PM PDT

So lately when I've been gaming, anyone in my house watching a movie causes my ping to go out of control. I tested my internet speed and I'm currently getting a 35 MBPS Upload Speed, and a 6 MBPS Download Speed. I've tried turning off the WMM on the router settings, using different channels and frequencies, etc. but nothing works. Currently on 5 GHZ connection, as the same problem was occurring when I was on 2 GHZ. I am on wifi but the signal strength is 100%. Router is advertised as being able to provide up to 300 MBPS. I'm planning on calling the ISP tomorrow but wanted to know if anyone has any ideas of anything else that I can try.

Recommend router and 12ish-port switch without wireless?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:57 PM PDT

Setting up a new home network with some wired runs back to a central closet. I'd like a device (perferably mikrotik, but I'm open to other brands) that has these capabilities:

I'll have my cable modem connected to the WAN port on the device, which should act as DHCP server for the whole network, and router and a switch for about ~8 wired gigabit connections One of those will be to my wireless AP which will be located elsewhere in the house in a more central location. I also want a few empty ports on this device for future expansion, so I'm thinking at least 12 total ports. PoE on this device is a desired feature for IP cameras and phones (not purchased yet).

I've found it hard to find such a device that doesn't have wireless and has more than 5 ports.

Any ideas? Again, I'd prefer mikrotik since I like their hardware and customizability (I have their hAP AC routerboard) but I'm open to another brand if this is hard to find.

Will using the 2nd NiC on Synology Nas will speed up access to third party apps?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:38 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

If I use the 2nd nic on the Nas to use as a dedicated Network, will it help speed up access to DS audio, DS video, OpenVPN?

Ex. NiC 1: Synology services like cloud backups, sync tasks, ddns services etc.

Ex. NiC 2: openvpn, Plex, DS audio, video etc.

Will this do anything in terms of latency/speed to access multimedia services using openvpn?

Or is this handled with ease by nic 1 therefore no point in setting up the 2nd one for these kinds of services?

I can't say that the NAS has heavy usage, by the contrary. So maybe it won't be worth it in my case.

I'm a newbie when it comes to networks.

    Thanks.

    HTTPS and Home Network Monitoring

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:18 AM PDT

I'm trying to use Wireshark to capture packets on my home network. Currently I can only capture and extract objects from HTTP, but since most of the sites being visited at home are HTTPS I cannot extract anything.

My current set up is Cable Modem -> Netgear Pro Safe GS105Ev2 -> TPLink AC1350 (AP)

For the GS105E I have my modem going into Port 1, Port 4 is my monitoring port which goes into my PC which I am running Wireshark from and Port 5 is going into the AP. I am currently mirroring Port 1 to Port 4. I'm a novice at this and could really use some step by step instructions. Any help would be appreciated!

    IPv6 SLAAC across routed boundaries

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:16 AM PDT

    Hey-o

Is anyone familiar with the appropriate configuration to obtain a slaac prefix behind say a layer 3 switch?

    My setup is basically Mikrotik CHR -> /30 routed interface -> Cisco 3560-X w/ L3 -> vlans

Was also considering rolling private space with nptv6 but was curious how to do this directly.

    Thanks

I think brother is blocking mac address?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:56 PM PDT

I'll leave all the "my brother is an emotional child" out of this post but here is my current situation.

For about 5 days my Internet stops working until I power cycle the modem. It continues to work if he's asleep or gone but as soon as he is awake and home my Internet keeps going out. I have my stuff all hooked up to a router and his stuff is all hooked up to the modem.

    • my router is a linksys something or other. Model # WRT54G2 V1. I don't know the modem model but we have Rogers Internet (canada) and it's a big white brick.

    • he used to run a pc store and junk. He told me a long time ago he has the router (it's his) set up to just basically be a splice for the Internet. I can't seem to access the router at all (to try and change the MAC address) and since the MAC address is blocked I can't access the modem either. I'm going to try to direct connect my pc to the modem next chance I get and see if that works (I'm at work currently and just thought of it).

Everything is connected. I used cmd to ping 8.8.4.4 and got all time outs. When I power cycle the modem it works for a bit and kicks off for seemingly no reason but only when he is home and notices me reset the modem (or after he gets home after and sees my Internet is working then disappears and it all goes down).

If I were to go buy my own router and hook it up would it be possible to just change my MAC address whenever he does this? Also I have no sure way to tell if this is actually what is happening but it's what I've concluded after a lot of trouble shooting and his general attitude. If anyone knows a way to prove it's what is happening that would be swell so I can at least show my sister what is going on so I sound less crazy when I tell her I'm moving.

sophos vs pfense and advice on home network build out. Simple setup.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:54 PM PDT

So usually i've always just fallen into the pattern of using the provided router/switch given to me by my ISP and hooking up a few systems to it via WiFI and then chugging along but feeling the need to get more involved as I am going to start incorporating some IoT devices and want to properly segment them from my main network.

My original plan was to utilize pfense and separate the IoT devices into their own VLAN, and to provide VPN options as well. Reading through this subreddit though I have been looking at Sophos UTM/XG and curious about it as well.

I use pfsense at work as our main firewall so I am familiar with some of the features behind it though it was inherited and I never set up the openVPN feature on it.

The network doesn't need to be too complicated, only talking about 6-8 systems (laptops, desktops, phones) connected to it and then IoT devices as well (blinds, thermostat, roomba, etc).

    I found a link to this: https://www.amazon.com/ZOTAC-ZBOX-CI327NANO-U-Celeron-1-1GHz-Barebone/dp/B0728F8JS5/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1523570809&sr=1-1&keywords=zotac&dpID=41g8yu-oYcL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch&th=1

Which seems to be a nice little mini pc out of the box to utilize, though building my own box is totally fine too and no issues behind that. Any suggestions moving forward? Sophos XG is it free for home use like UTM is or just a trial? Documentation on their site didn't seem to say or I couldn't find it. Pfsense vs Sophos for ease of use out of the box, ease of setting up VPN?

TP-Link Archer c7 v2, slow download on Android devices?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:41 PM PDT

So I have 2 different brand Android TV boxes that are both having big issues with download speed connected to LAN, actually WI-FI seems slow too but that's easier to explain due to distance, obstructions, etc. But the LAN, which is what I would like to use, is ridiculously slow on one older box and only giving me 1/4 the full speed of the port on the other. Old box gets 3 down/40 up, and new one does 25 down/ 40 up, what gives? I've tested both on the same line I use on my desktop that I know does 410Mbps (Not that I expect that full speed on these Android boxes). So what could this be, a router setting for this type of Android devices? Or what are the chances that both this old and new Android TV box have hardware problems?

My ISP said i might be in trouble...

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:25 AM PDT

My ISP removed my connection and said that he is getting signal from my pc into all his lines. He said that your pc is giving back signal and it can be found across all my lines. He was pissed off saying that because of you I had to call network engineer to trackdown from where this signal is coming. He came to my house to check , he connected his laptop to my pc and my ip address was showing in his cmd prompt screen. He said look the signal is coming from your pc and the same signal is coming across all my lines. I don't know any of these things. He said that I might be in legal trouble. And told me to solve this issue if I wanted my connection back. I am afraid. Suspicions: 1. A month ago I tried to reverse tether my phone(tried to use my pc's internet in my phone via USB watched it on YouTube I did this as I didn't have router and I use internet by directly connecting ethernet cable to my pc). But he said it's been happening from the last 10 days and I've already uninstalled and deleted those programs as they didn't work.

    1. Windows defender found the following today: worm: win32/Phorpiex.C!bit and I removed it but it is showing again right now. Please help me I'm a noob and afraid ever since he said about legal trouble and sorry for my grammar. Thanks

How can I VPN between my two LANs?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:32 PM PDT

I have one LAN in my apartment in one city, and another LAN at my parents' home in another city.

I was under the impression that using VPN, I could connect one LAN to the other as if they were physically together (i.e, share folders/files/printers through Windows).

I tried to use my router to do this, Asus RT-AC66U (same unit at both locations), but I can't get it to work. If I enable PPTP VPN, the one router will connect to the other, and browse the internet through the other, but I have no access to the LAN. And I don't want to use the internet through the other LAN to begin with.

I tried to set up OpenVPN but it wouldn't even connect after I tried.

Router seems operational, no network showing up

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:46 AM PDT

Background: We are using a local service provider (closed today), and the router is one supplied by them. There have been no major issues up until yesterday. I've set up basic WiFi stuff before, but I don't have a manual or any helpful documentation on the router.

Issue: The routers LED's show that it's operating normally, but I can't pick up WiFi on any device; including multiple phones, computers, and TV. It's almost as if the router was turned off or missing entirely. I've tried turning off and back on, holding the reset button, and leaving it unplugged for more than 30mins to no avail. The only documentation I could find was a quick start guide I'll link. Thanks for any tips.

Can a Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-LITE interfere with entertainment radio channels?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:56 AM PDT

(UK) I've recently had the house rewired and at the same time I put in a network. Four jacks in a single wall plate in each of four rooms in the house, running to a patch panel, a 24 port managed switch and the router/internet connection in the loft. I also put a WAP in a downstairs cupboard out of sight. Now we can't see any of the infrastructure but we have a practical network. Attached to it are 2 x PC's, 1 x home laptop, 1 x work laptop, a laser printer and numerous android devices.

Yesterday my wife was trying to listen to a small clock radio (Why is too long an explanation!) and the signal was atrocious. She then sad it's been like that since the network went in. This was the first time she had mentioned this.

So, can a WAP interfere with FM radio and therefore could I be interfering with neighbours? I used quality cat 6 shielded cable for all the drops. The wifi is off on the router leaving just the Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-LITE WAP broadcasting. Google search for WAP interference finds articles about WAP's interfering with each other not FM. So far... :)

    Thanks.

    Maximize Apartment Ethernet Ports?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:42 AM PDT

So I recently got Verizon FIOS and the ONT is in a closet and is connected via ethernet to a device (I think it's called a switch?) that allows me to utilize one of the three Ethernet/coax ports in the apartment. The one I'm currently using is in the living room and is connected to my router.

However, I want to be able to utilize the other two Ethernet ports and have no idea how to get that connection going. The tech guy said I could move my router to where the ONT is connected and go [ONT -> router -> switch device? (i think) -> all ports usable] but it would leave me with poorer WiFi coverage which didn't seem like a great idea for me.

Is there any way I could keep my router in the living room but make all 3 ethernet ports usable?

I have a TP-link powerline adapter and a modem (from previous apt) on hand but could use advice on how to best approach this situation.

How to disable strict NAT in OPNsense

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:45 PM PDT

While this isn't a huge hindrance to my day to day activities a few games (warframe, destiny 2) and my PS4 both like to tell me that strict NAT is enabled so some stuff isn't going to work right. I honestly have no idea what it does none of the other router OS's I've used had it so I'd like to disable it if anyone knows how, google hasn't turned up any useful or still working info for me.

Wireless keeps getting knocked out, but hardwire internet remains

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:25 PM PDT

First, i know this isn't a enterprise or work environment post. But i wanted some of your guys input. For the last 3 weeks, i keep loosing wireless in my house. Sometimes for a few minutes. Other times 20 minutes or so. I have a Netgear WNDR4300.

I started looking at firmware, settings, etc. The only thing that happens at the time the wireless drops, (hard line internet still works) is my logs are full of DOS Attack entries. Mostly ACK scans but a handful of RST scans as well.

I just had to reboot the router because it happened again, and sure enough, right before reboot, the logs were full. This time the IP's are form all over the place.

This is getting beyond ridiculous. Whatever they reason, everything gets knocked off wireless. I've reflashed the firmware, downgraded firmware, put it back to most current firmware. Verified all connected devices belong to my home.

I just seems someone is finding the router on a internet scan, probably via Shodan or something and trying to exploit it.

Am i reading to much into this or is my router being hammered?

Most lightweight linux based OS for a DIY NAS server?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:25 AM PDT

    Hi there!

Question is in the title. I am planning to attach an actual monitor to it but it would be great if I could remote into it from another computer (in the same network) too.

It's really just meant as a backup server so I don't need any media server functionality.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, guys.

Why are both Frontier and Spectrum telling me my Surfboard 6183 won't work?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:57 AM PDT

I bought this modem before I moved to this apartment because I didn't want to pay equipment rental fees.

I'm trying to get a 100mbps internet set up. No phone or TV service. The Spectrum install tech here right now speaks broken English but he seems to be saying I can't use this Surfboard because it doesn't have a phone jack? Do modern Internet connections still rely on that? I made it clear to the service rep while setting up the install that I didn't want anything other than internet.

The SB 6183 has a coax port and a lone Ethernet port, which I intended on running to my Netgear N600. He has instead swapped my SB6183 for a TM1602. Is that necessary? I guess Spectrum doesn't charge equipment rental fees here so it's not the end of the world but I bought this modem specifically because it says compatible with spectrum so I'm confused.

My Ubiquiti AP Lite WIFI is not seamless

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:46 AM PDT

Hi. So I made a post before about getting an AP. Now I have my ubiquiti ap all set up. The wifi is set to one SSID, however it isn't working as intended. For example, I am in my room close to the router and talks on facetime. Then I decide to move to the kitchen where the ap is. Facetime will cut and reconnect like the AP isn't working together with the router, it's more like a repeater on the same SSID. Is it possible to make so the wifi "seamless"? These reconnections between the two units are kind of annoying. Any help will be appreciated.

    Suggestions for a small apartment

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:42 AM PDT

I have just move into a 700 square ft apartment and I'm looking to get away from my SURFboard combo.
The signal drops off all of the time and speeds aren't great anyway.
I play video games on PS4 and stream my media via an Amazon fire stick.
Are there any good modem/router combos or should I get separate units?
What suggestions do you guys have for my apartment size and needs.
Budget is flexible but I'd rather keep it as low as possible.
    Comcast 100mb internet.
