Could someone please explain how Proxy servers work?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:42 AM PDT

Also, I see at many points in daily life about proxy server blocking access to an application. For example, "Proxy servers can block connections to your web app once it's up and running" in Docker docs. How does this work?

    Any explanation would be appreciated!

    Accidentally removed rm command, help?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:47 PM PDT

I was removing a bunch of files from /usr/bin because I downloaded a particularly frustrating program and couldn't uninstall it without deleting all of its directories. I think this happened

    [user@host] # rm vncserver [user@host] # rm vncserver-x11-serviced vncpasswd vncagent [user@host] # rm rm vncserver-x11 vncserver-x11-core

I typed rm twice and now I cant use the command rm, how can I fix this?

Beelink S1 - Gaming Operating System

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:52 AM PDT

The Beelink S1 I purchased has Ubuntu installed. (specs from seller)

However, am looking to convert it to a gaming console.

Was thinking of a clean OS install of one of these distributions: Lakka, RetroPi, RetrOrangePi, RecalBox, GamingStationOS or PixelOS.

The difficulty I have is with regards to the Intel Apollo chipsets as these do not seem to take a normal operating system.

Any comment or advise on which OS suits the most in relation to the Intel Apollo chipset?

    Thank you.

    Systemd Service

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:58 AM PDT

Hi, I tried creating a systemd service to automaticly start i3lock-next when the PC goes to sleep, a user gave me a example

    [Unit] Description=User suspend actions Before=sleep.target Before=suspend.target

    [Service] User=johny Type=forking Environment=DISPLAY=:0 ExecStart=/home/johny/.local/bin/lock ExecStartPost=/usr/bin/sleep .2 [Install] WantedBy=sleep.target WantedBy=suspend.target

    I have some questions:

    1. Why is the display 0?

    2. What should I put after ExecStart and ExecStartPost, I don't want i3lock, I want i3lock-next, I also don't seem to have a bin folder in .local.

Is it normal for Linux Mint to upload/download 600bit/s every 10 seconds or so?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:34 PM PDT

I have no running applications and it keeps doing this, 600 bits may not sound like a lot, but I have no idea what it could be sending or where to, the computer i installed linux on had a virus on windows before I switched, so i'm a bit paranoid

Also, how do you see all incomming and outgoing traffic in a more detailed way (showing IPs)? Thanks for any help!

I need some guidance about Linux Server administration and web-hosting.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:43 AM PDT

I want to learn everything about webhosting and server administration on linux, I studied computer science and graduated but they didn't teach us a thing about the stuff you need in your daily-basis life.

It would be greate if you tell me any tutorials, books or advice that will make me confidently set up my own server, secure it, manage it and I need to learn stuff like Load Balancing, Subdomains and every aspect of the web and servers.

Just remember that I am not a total noob, but I am fairly new to linux.

    Problem installing Eclipse

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:43 AM PDT

On freshly installed Lubuntu I've tried to install eclipse using apt:

    sudo apt install eclipse

After launching it I recieve an error: "An error has occurred. See the log file

    /home/*USERNAME*/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.8_155965261/configuration/1530383266746.log"

    In this log it says:

Backing up existing system and installing new OS.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:39 AM PDT

So I have a System76 Galago pro. It has ubuntu 16.04 on it and I've been wanting to change it to LARBS. I have a 1TB hard drive for storage and a 250gb SSD boot drive. I dont have anything super important on the SSD. So I'm not to bothered about losing anything but I am a bit of a data hoarder I don't delete anything unless i know for absolute certainty that I will not need it ever again.

So, I want to back up my SSD which is only 32GB full. Store it on my 1TB HDD so if something should go wrong or I need something from it I can access it.

My question is what is the best way to achieve this? should I do use tar from the root and exclude the mounted Drive? Should I use rsync or dd? Please note. I do not know these commands well (what arguments to use etc) I just know their general purpose.

The main reason for the the backup is because If all goes wrong I would like to be able to restore my laptop to how it is currently. I don't foresee any issues. Like I said its a System76 Laptop so I don't think hardware support will be an issue but it did come with System76 Driver and I don't know what this is.

Kindly recommend me an app that can clone Android phone display in Ubuntu

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:54 AM PDT

My father loves to use his Samsung Galaxy Note5 for internet (youtube/web surfing/facebook). He just doesn't like the desktop version. As I have a spare Lubuntu 17.10 rig + 15" LCD monitor, I am thinking of linking the phone to the computer, with the computer displays whatever that is shown on the phone (interaction via keyboard & mouse). I have tried the Chrome extension Vysor but it seems limited with the free version. As Android is build on Linux, I am hoping for a better integration out of the box. Is there any linux program that can do just that?

    Systemd service doesnt work

    When I use:

systemctl start service, it works, but the PC doesnt go to sleep, probably normal.

But when the PC goes to sleep it doesnt work, even after enabling it.

Is there a way to block single-user mode which works by editing the grub entries with init=/bin/bash ?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 05:31 AM PDT

I'm helping a high school to secure some Debian 8 computers, where a teen seems to know about single user mode, change the root password then normally logs as root and keeps installing whatever he wants, including Ubuntu's PPAs...

I for now have locked down the BIOS, encrypted the disk, disabled grub's recovery entries and systemd has been configured to prevent the first way of getting into single-user mode.

But what I still can't figure out is how can I prevent that teen to tell the kernel to go single-user mode by appending init=/bin/bash to grub entries just right before booting.

And that's the question, do you guys know a way to achieve such lock down ?

    Edit:

I know the kid's on vacation now, but he let a whole year worth of mess in the library's PCs.

But let's make sure he won't do such mess again when he comes back.

    WiFi connectivity issues Ubuntu 18.04

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:47 AM PDT

I'm relatively new to Linux and started off with Ubuntu 18.04, like 2 weeks ago. Lately I've been having issues with connecting to my WiFi.

Sometimes it would connect right away, while other times it'd be a real pain. I would restart the laptop, the WiFi modem/router, make sure all the downloaded updates have been installed and what not. Sometimes it'd connect after hassling a little bit, sometimes it won't no matter what, and idk what to do.

    • my laptop is Acer aspire 5
    • When I installed Ubuntu I did the minimal install (if that helps pinpoint the issue)
    • All other divices are running smoothly on the same WiFi (w/o issues)
    • The laptop is showing other WiFi signals around my house, but even when I "forget" the home WiFi, it won't show up. (It did show up the first time booting up)- and so to connect I'd have to connect using the "Connect to a hidden network" option.
    • I did Google the issue, where I saw a suggestion to add "nameserver 8.8.8.8" in a file and I did.
    • Restarting the network through terminal- done.
    • Sudo ifup eth0 brings up "unknown network interface."
    • Ping 127.0.0.1 works fine

    Some help?

    Snapshot questions

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:15 PM PDT

Hi all, am aware of Remastersys, Respin, and the mklivecd command.

Basically I'm wanting to take a snapshot of my current configuration so that particular things will be saved like the current state of the config files for grub menu and bash shell (think this is a given with all of them though anyway, correct me if I'm wrong), as well as the fact I have virtualbox installed, and even the exact states of the virtual machines I have installed within virtualbox. Is such a thing possible, and what would be the best option for me?

and is it possible/feasible to save it in a compressed state at all?

e.g. how when I downloaded Debian, the download itself was <300MB (IIRC) but the OS itself soon exceeded 20GB, I think through unpacking and decompressing? as I don't believe I downloaded that much through updates. (This size is excluding the size of any virtualbox machines by the way, and my system is pretty new, I haven't really added anything else except the virtual machines)

Cheers for any helpful feedback :)

Need help to install the amdgpu driver [Parabola GNU/Linux-Libre]

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:47 AM PDT

Hi, i've been trying to get my R9 290 working.

I made a live usb of Arch Linux to do everything from a chroot environment, I followed the steps of configuration in the ArchWiki to the letter. But here's the weird thing, when the OS starts, I just get a black screen as if there was not a video output (But there is) another thing is that if for example I try to start in a TTY it apparently starts and I can run commands on it (Having the black screen).

Before this I used the integrated graphics of the mobo, it is an old GMA 3100.

I really do not know what it could be, I would appreciate your help people a lot.

(I am currently on the PC running without the GPU, with my GMA 3100 and the xf86-video-intel driver installed, i uninstalled the amdgpu driver until i get a solution.)

PS: I'm using Parabola GNU / Linux - Libre, I don't know if the kernel and the modules will have something to do with this , like it says in the wiki i modified the file "mkinitcpio.conf" so that it starts the amdgpu and radeon kernel modules. ( this, MODULES = (amdgpu radeon)); Sorry if my english it's not the best.

    Cooling fan

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:12 PM PDT

So I noticed once I moved out of windows over to Linux, the laptop cooling fan stops after booting. It has done this on each distro I have used. I am currently using Mint 18.3. I have a temporary fix, as I ran it to a usb. However, I like having available USB ports. Thanks in advance.

Is there anything I can do to play with a generic bluetooth controller?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:51 PM PDT

I've been trying to play with my new generic controller, one that I bought for Android phones (Though it was advertized for PC and Mac too). I have problems on windows too, though there it works (Just no in steam games, it does on Big picture tho'). I have tried to test it with jstest-gtk and it gets it, and I can see the input actually happen (When I press button A, button A is shown pressed). I got it branded as X3, however I've seen it also branded as Terios T-3.

I'm on Xubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver), so I can't install QtSixA, and I allready have xboxdrv (Actual Wired Xbox360 controller works fine).

    From MacOS to LinuxMint

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 03:56 PM PDT

I've been interested in using Linux for a long time and finally got down to it once I realized browsers were no longer supporting Mavericks on my 2007 MacBook. I installed a 32-bit EFI compatible version of LinuxMint 18.2 with KDE and everything looks really cool and I've been having some fun getting accustomed to it. My main goal is keeping this 11 year old computer useful and learning some new stuff along the way. Everything's working smoothly, and I love that I get more options on how to use my trackpad than I do with Windows. So far I have installed Chrome (which I use for work), Vivaldi and VLC on top of the applications that were part of the install. With that in mind I wanted to get some advice for how to make this transition better for myself in a couple of ways relating to how i use this computer:

I'm using VLC or Amarok to play music. In some ways they're cool because they have a lot of features but also don't seem to have sorting like an iTunes library does. Are there any media player programs that show Artist/Album/Genre information similar to iTunes? My main hangup in using VLC and Amarok is that they feel like I'm scrolling through folders rather than a library of music.

What is the best way of getting my photos from my iPhone to my computer? I don't mind them going to some cloud service first, as it would be cool to take photos then have them saved to a folder on my laptop without having to plug in the iPhone.

Is there an easy way of switching from KDE to something else like Cinnamon?

    Domain and hostname confusion

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:53 PM PDT

Should my hostname, as defined in /etc/hostname, be the same as the domain that my web server and mail server are using? In other words, if people browse to test.com to see my web site and send mail to [test@test.com](mailto:test@test.com) to contact me, should the hostname of the virtual server running those programs be test.com or simply "server" or perhaps server.test.com?
