    Home Networking Extend Ethernet Pull

    Extend Ethernet Pull

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:00 AM PDT

    Hi,

I recently got ethernet drops done in my house and in the one room the drop is like a few feet to the right of where I wanted it and there is some slack on the cable but not enough to fish it through the whole way. Would terminating the cable with a keystone jack or into a rj45 connector and using a coupler to extend the cable with the extra bulk cable I have work? Would I segregate the connection? Is there an easier way to extend the cable? Its really not a *huge* issue but I'd just like to clean it up if possible. Thanks!

    Network Equipment Recommendations for Gigabit

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:09 PM PDT

    Hey, smart people of r/HomeNetworking,

First time asking a question here but I'm always browsing through posts. Currently I have a 100/100Mbps symmetrical fiber connection coming into my home which then goes into an old but trusty Asus AC-66R running AsusWRT-Merlin, and then in the other part of the house I have my ISP supplied router acting as an access point. Switching between access points is a pain because I have it set up as two different SSID's. The router in the basement just doesn't reach across the house, I don't think any router would honestly and I wouldn't expect one to.

This works for now, but the thing is, I'm upgrading to symmetrical gigabit next week. That AC-66R is not going to be able to handle those speeds reliably. Most of my data-hungry devices are hard wired with CAT 6 (a few servers, Xbox Ones, PCs) so I don't need 5000000Gbps WiFi with 500 antennas on the router. I have a Ethernet cable ran from the current router to the access point in the kitchen which covers the part of the house that the Asus router doesn't. I'm planning to upgrade/replace that kitchen access point as a part of this whole upgrade.

I'm more familiar with enterprise networking equipment but I am not looking to spend that kind of money for home use. However I do want something higher end than just regular consumer products. I was looking into an Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite-3 and pairing that up with a UniFi AC LR but I've been reading around and people say the Edgerouter Lite won't be able to sustain a gigabit connection especially with things like torrents, NAT traffic, etc...

The big thing I want is a rock solid connection and reliability since I'm running servers at home.

I'm just looking to see what you guys recommend for under $500 if possible, or what you currently have running at home. I'm open to all suggestions, any input is appreciated!

Unplug coax, replug and can't get network back up.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 03:43 PM PDT

I have a Moto 6141, ER-X, and AC-Lite. Earlier today I had to unplug my coax cable and when I reconnected the cable, I couldn't get anything back up. When I plug in my 6141 with power and coax I get...
    Power Light = Solid Green
    Receive = Solid Green

    Send = Blinks Blue

    Link = Flashes Blue

I have power cycled many times. Even when connecting directly from the modem to my computer and bypassing the ER-X altogether and doing manual configuration I still get the same light patterns. EdgeOS screenshot here.

    Connecting two Lans

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:51 AM PDT

This will probably be easy for you folks.... For me... Well, I suck.

I have two LAN networks -

    192.168.0.x 255.255.255.0

    192.168.99.x 255.255.245.0

In the middle I am going to put a router.

From my 0 network I want to try and access stuff on the 99 network.

For boring reasons, I can not set either network to have a default gateway.

Is this possible / what is the best way of doing things? Ideally I would like to be able to point my communications directly from one network to another, with the router being an invisible middle man.

    Can it be done?

Questions on upgrading very old router

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:16 PM PDT

Hey all - I am a bit of a networking noob but have very much enjoyed tinkering around in the past. My current router is a
Asus RT-N12B running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (04/13/11) mini that has treated me well enough for many many years. I live in a 400 sq ft studio apt with the cheapest internet I can buy that is still way too expensive. I never have to touch this thing and it has worked for years without issue.

The problem I'm currently facing is my wifi has become a bit too slow for comfort and doesn't seem to handle new tablet on top of desktop/laptop/phone/etc. I'm guessing its time to upgrade from the 802.11G.

I've done a bit of research and was hoping to get some pieces to improve now but leave upgrade options for later open. I was looking at grabbing a TP-Link EAP225 and wanted to make sure I could hook that up to my router to use as an access point. The idea is get a good access point that could be used in the future and upgrade to a better router/switch situation when the time comes. Hopefully one day I'll have more than 400 sq ft and a crappy internet plan. And creating a more advanced home network with the ability to expand functionality in the future seems like a lot of fun. Any input into if this is a good idea would be appreciated.

I was also wondering if I should step it up a little and go for the Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite for a little more? Or am I doing this wrong and I should just get a TP-Link AC1750 for the same price (or get fancy with it and go for the Asus-rt-ac3200) and call it a day?

Thanks for any and all advice!

DHCP vs Static IP map. Pros and cons

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:08 PM PDT

I recently bought an Ubiquiti EdgerouterX, and I have mapped some static IPs in the router settings for my raspberry pi projects. I thought it might be nice to set up a static map for all devices on the network (PCs, phones, Amazon Echo, Roku, etc.) to keep it all neat and organized. Is there any reason not to do this? Is DHCP better for any reason?

    Improving signal throughout my home.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:06 PM PDT

Just bought an old home and had Cox internet set up .. definitely not getting a great signal throughout the house with their panoramic wifi router. The home is about 1500sqft and I'm thinking about getting my own modem and maybe the Google WiFi system? Any better or cheaper options? We have 5 to 10 devices connected , and we stream and game a LOT! Thanks in advance!

Asus Blue Cave - AI Mesh compatible?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:43 PM PDT

Blue Cave is on sale this week, and I'm thinking of pairing it up with my existing RT-AC86U for Mesh. I read somewhere that the Blue Cave would be AI Mesh compatible mid-year. Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

Help getting good wireless signal across the whole house

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:23 PM PDT

Current Setup: One Asus RT-N66U set up in a bedroom in the house and one DLink Extender down the hall.

Problem: Signal really sucks downstairs away from the bedroom. The way the house is built means that there's no central room available to move the router to. The extender often craps out and it's annoying to have to switch manually every time.

Wiring Ethernet is not an option.

What's the best solution to ensure fast wi-fi throughout the house? Would prefer cheaper options but willing to spend if absolutely worth it. House is quite large, would like signal in the basement too.

    Thanks!

    Erratic Ping

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:11 PM PDT

I have TWC/Spectrum 200mbps down and 20 up. My ping will randomly spike up to 600-1000ms throughout the night, which is obnoxious when playing online games.

    I have the following:

    1. Arris SB6183 modem
    2. Ubiquiti USG
    3. Uniquiti 8-150W
    4. Laptop hard wired to the usg (or modem as needed) to test

Anyway I have noticed poor ping throughout the night when playing games. I have downloaded Ping Plotter to track my ping over time. I have noticed that if I run a speedtest my ping will shoot up to 300-1000ms. Is this normal?

I had a TWC tech come out today and he said he can reach the appropriate speeds and his tests are showing 18ms ping. Then he said I needed a new modem and left...

Anyway, I can run pingplotter tracing to my USG and to google. com and EVERY time I run FAST.com or http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest My ping shoots up over 300ms.

    Is this normal?

Also the tech on the phone with TWC said they were seeing multiple T4 Errors, but again the tech on site who was useless said everything looked fine...

I am a bit frustrated and just want a consistent connection. Is there anything I can/should do within the network settings to try and resolve this issue?

    Thanks for any advice.

Want to build a server running NextcloudPlus, Collabra, and Emby. Tips & guides?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:50 AM PDT

    NextCloudPlus (also called nextcloud Pi)

    Emby

    Collabra

I currently run NextcloudPlus on a raspberry pi and Emby on my desktop. I'd like to run these AND collabra on a server that I plan on building this fall.

Any tips or guides for me to follow on installing and setting these up? I stumbled pretty good learning to install NextcloudPlus on my RPI.

My server will have a x86_64 processor (probably an AMD APU that has onboard graphics) and 1 HDD.

I've read about containers but I'm not sure if those would be useful and I don't really understand how they will help regarding Nextcloud (uses apache) and collabra (uses apache) that want to use the same router ports.

Nextcloud and Collabra will be open to access remotely, I want to keep the Emby instance only on my home network. I plan on using collabra from within the collabra app in nextcloud, used in browser

    MoCA Adapter available in Canada?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 02:56 PM PDT

I can't seem to find these anywhere and the Amazon.ca listing isn't even prime. Is it possible that I could get link to somewhere where I can purchases these or have an alternative MoCA Adapter that I am able to buy in Canada? I have also seen those DIRECTV Deca Adapters and again, I am unable to find anywhere where I can get them in Canada. If you went down the same route I hope to in MoCA, where did you fellow Canadians get yours?

Newbie needs help fixing home network set up.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:18 PM PDT

Hi /r/HomeNetworking I'm new to working with home networks, just recently bought an SG-108 Ethernet Switch to upgrade from my old D-Link to get my ports to run 1000 Mbps. However, the mess from the guy who worked on the networking previously confuses the hell out of me and I was hoping one of you lovely people would be able to help me sort it out. Due to the current set up, I can't seem to get the ports working better than 100 Mbps even with the new switch. Can someone help me out?

Will this be powerful enough for a router and a file server?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:16 AM PDT

I came across this device, it's called the "MintBox Mini 2" Link below, these are the specs:

    • The CPU is a quad-core Intel "Apollo Lake" Celeron J3455
    • 4 GB RAM are pre-installed in MBM2, 8 GB in MBM2 Pro. RAM is upgradable up to 16 GB
    • Storage is an upgradable M.2 2260 SATA SSD (64 GB pre-installed in MBM2 / 120 GB in MBM2 Pro)
    • Networking consists of dual Gbit Ethernet and 802.11ac WiFi + BT MBM2 has dual 4K display (HDMI + mini-DP)
    • 4 USB ports (2x USB 3.0 + 2x USB 2.0)
    • Front audio jacks, micro-SD, RS232 port and programmable front LEDs

My question is: Will this be powerful enough to run as a router, a file server (with external USB HDD)?

Is what am I using a modem or router?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 03:53 AM PDT

Hello , I've just started studying networking and I've gone past some some fundamentals. From what I understand , a modem is used for getting the internet and a router is used for connecting multiple devices to that internet (so the router has a built-in switch). But it doesn't seem to be this case for me. In my room i've got a Huawei EchoLife HG865 with only one computer connected to it. So I have got multiple questions: Is this a modem with a built-in router? How do I find out if it is a modem or a router?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:53 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I bought a new modem "asus dsl-n16 wireless-n300" becuase my old modem was hard locked by my internet provider so i couldt login in to the modem. I have been trying to portforwarding 7777 and 27015 so my friends can join my ARK server but no mater what tutorial i look at, i cant seem to open those ports. I used "Port Forward Network Utilities" to see if i successfully open a port but sadly no.

So i come here now looking for advice and help so i can portforward.
