Having multiple issues with TL-r470t, trying to use dual service

    Posted: 02 May 2018 06:00 PM PDT

My ISP here is only DSL at 30mbps so I wanted tot use an AT&T nighthawk Unlimited Hotspot since that also pulls in around 20-30, and helps give us some extra bandwidth since we do a lot of streaming, some of it 4K. I haven't had issues that I've healed with this LB router until now, for whatever reason I get extremely slow or no speeds right now when both are plugged into the router. Even if I just have my DSL plugged into it it'll still drop connection a lot, while if I bypass to my AirPort Extreme its just fine. So its either defected or its some settings issue. Anyone have suggestions? I can post the settings for it if someone can tell me how lol

Edit: Type in title. Its TL-r470t+

    VPN and Gaming

    Posted: 02 May 2018 07:16 PM PDT

I've done some looking and cannot find any VPN answers that address some of my questions and concerns.

I am looking to create a VPN to mainly allow friends access to my network and to be recognized as "internal" where games are concerned. I'm not as worried as much with privacy as accessibility.

Do you have recommendations for a VPN software that I can host on my Windows 10 "file server"? Do you have any recommendations that involve a somewhat simplistic client installs? Do you have a recommendation to include control of accounts via username and password? This is a requirement. If it has android accessibility that would be nice as well. I don't mind a 1 time payment for software as long as it's not terribly expensive it would be nice if I can pickup clients as needed.

If you have any questions please let me know and I'll answer them as best as possible. Thank you for your time.

Can Ubiquiti's Edgerouter X handle 5 gaming devices and one streaming PC?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 03:45 PM PDT

I'm planning a livestream event which involves five gamers (Xbox) in the same room, with a PC also on the network to stream it. I am planning on switching to a different ISP before it happens (I usually switch between the two available in my area every few years). I will be getting a faster connection, but I need to provide my own router unless I want to pay extra for their modem/router combo. I would usually just use that but I want to get a dedicated router, and have been looking into the ER-X because of its capabilities. The thing is, my understanding of the load it can handle is vague. I don't know how much a router that small could handle. But I could be wrong and size might not matter for it. Would an ER-X work for this setup or should I get something else? Thanks

fixed faulty Netgear GS108Ev3 (wall mounted)

    Posted: 02 May 2018 01:48 AM PDT

For my home network I bought a Netgear GS108Ev3 switch. Since I have all my network devices close to each in the store room I also wall mounted the new switch there (with the provided screws). After I powered the switch on, it fired up but showed abnormal behaviour of the LEDs: The power indicator was on as well as the 10mbit light of port 8. All other lights were off.

Netgear provides lifetime guarantee, and after a week I got the switch replaced with another one. Sadly the new device had exactly the same issue. Because I was unsure, if maybe this was caused by a faulty cable, I called Netgear again. They were pretty nice and replaced the switch a second time.

To my surprise also the third switch showed exactly the same behaviour and wasn't reachable in the network with the provided Windows application. Since I had my doubts I got three broken switches in a row, I took the switch from the wall and connected everything on the fly. Now suddenly the switch worked just fine and all the lights showed their corresponding behaviour.

That got me thinking: Why does the switch only fail, when it's on the wall? I opened the switch and took out the mainboard. And there I found the reason: As you can see, the mounting holes are just openings in the bottom plate of the case. To prevent any shortcuts to the mainboard, Netgear placed two plastic covers inside the case above the holes. Unfortunately some parts on the bottom of the mainboard are sticking out too long. They were soldered in but their legs should have been shortened afterwards. One of these metal legs pushed itself through the plastic cover. With the "help" of the screw (for wall mounting) this leg got bridged to the case and triggered the faulty behaviour of the switch.

I shortened the leg and put some insolating tape on the little hole. Now everything works like a charme. Maybe this might be helpful for someone in the future.

    Wifi connection disconnects a lot

    Posted: 02 May 2018 07:28 PM PDT

I have a modem/router given by my ISP, I don't know what it is but it's dual band but literally only my phone can connect to 5GHz, everything else only picks 2.4GHz. The internet while browsings, watching videos, netflix, etc, it gets 42mb on donwload. Which is fine and all.

But when I'm playing Minecraft with my friends while I'm on a Discord call, it keeps disconnection and reconnection on short intervals and it's pissing me off.

I live on a building with lots of apartments around me, so there are lots of neighbords using 2.4GHz internet, so yeah I get this thing may be happening because of interference but the thing is, I've used 2.4GHz wifi for a long time (more than 4 years) and it never was this severe, and this problem didn't happen to me before, so why now? I mean, yeah, lag and disconnect happened before, but rarely, now it happens every time!

I don't use google DNS, my IP is dynamic. I use a Windows 10 desktop machine, the modem is on the room next door (barely 10 metters from my desktop to the modem, so I don't know why this happens so often, and it's only when I'm gaming

I can solve all my problems with the cable, if I connect my PC on the cable this never happens. And it only happens on my desktop PC, I don't nothing else disconnecting, not even my Xbox and 3DS, which uses 2.4GHz as well, so maybe it's my PC, I don't know.

I use a Wifi USB adapter because I didn't purchase an internal wifi & bluetooth PCI card (I also use a bluetooth USB adapter) which I don't even know if it's better than the USB adapter or not. I was thinking on purchasing a 5GHz compatible USB adapter since it's easier to install than a internal card (I'm terrible with PC building, even though I like it) but I can't spend money this month, I have lots of shit to pay, and maybe this shit can be solved with smart internet settings and management.

If you guys need to know anything, just tell me and I'll try answer you all.

    Router problems (ASUS RT87U)

    Posted: 02 May 2018 09:33 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm looking for some help on a problem I recently encountered. My old Vodafone modem which I need to connect to my router was having problems so I switched it out for a new one, the model of the modem is still the same (HG 658C).

After I switched out my modem I got the necessary details off my ISP: Static IP, Subnet mask, Default Gateway, using the google DNS. I've confirmed with my ISP that I'm on a static IP. After I've done everything and set the SSID the homepage says that my router's working and connected to the internet:

    https://gyazo.com/b31798d62a124480cf2291947bee5690

    However when I try use it the internet doesn't work, I've tried checking the Adaptive QoS thing and it shows that there's some bandwidth being transmitted but it's very small;

    https://gyazo.com/0aa9aad5532155f31bdb35e4559b5a9a

With the old modem I wouldn't have a problem at all with this and I've tried using the old one to reconnect it but the result is still the same.

I've ensured that all the wires I'm using to connect the modem to the router are new and that it's wired correctly so it shouldn't be wiring fault. I've also factory reset the router multiple times but the result is still the same.

The only anomaly that I can see in the settings is the time which is set to 2015 August whenever I factory reset it. I've tried to correct the date and time before with instructions online saying to press apply after putting in a NTP server but I haven't had any luck, it still stays the same. I'm uncertain if the date and time is causing my router to not work and I've no idea how to correct it.

GB speed cut in third via router? Help!

    Posted: 02 May 2018 06:31 PM PDT

Just got Gigabit internet service today.

Went from 300mb download, which I was paying for 250mb, so that was fine and I never noticed an issue with that. However, when I got the Gigabit internet today, I noticed speeds were only 625-680mbps. After some troubleshooting and failing, I wondered if it was something router specific, cable specific, or modem specific. So I plugged straight into the Ethernet of the Modem, bypassing the router. Woolah. 950+mbps. So that means the modem is fine and the ethernet from the PC to that modem is fine. So it was either the other cable (from router to modem) or router itself.. I went to Best Buy and bought a cat6 cable to replace the ethernet cable that came with the router that was hooked from the router into the modem, and the cat6 cable did not change the speeds at all. Still 620-680mbps. So it must be a router issue.. The router states 1gb ethernet ports.. But apparently not? Or a setting is screwing me?

I called ASUS and they walked me through simple troubleshooting steps, they could not fix it. I've tried turning off the firewalls, turning on jumbo frame.. Among other things I don't even remember at this point. Not sure what to do. The router is about 3 years old now.. But was $200. Maybe it's already time for it's replacement? I don't know. Help! D:

Modem: Next-Generation ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

    Router: ASUS RT-AC66R 802.11ac Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router

Edit: Just to clarify: All testing done via ethernet, none actually connected via WiFi.

Edit 2: No QoS of any sorts turned on.

Edit 3: I have the router because there's two cell phones, a tablet, and a laptop in the home as well. I also have a 'streaming PC' which also plugs in via hardwire-ethernet to router as well, just like my gaming PC.

    Wireless solution?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 05:36 PM PDT

My current scenario is i've recently upgraded from 25 mbps internet to 200 mbps, different ISP. I have to buy a wireless router as i won't use the previous modem/router combo device. Additionally, we've recently built a detached shop, in which i get about 2 bars of signal strength on my phone via WiFi if i'm in the closest corner of the shop. I noticed many people on this subreddit show a seething hatred for repeaters/extenders but i don't care much for the full speed in the shop, just the availability in the shop's entirety.

    TL;DR

      1. I'm looking for a decent new router, nothing fancy.

      2. Can wireless repeater/extender technology be good if i don't need the full bandwidth and care more for availability? (wired not feasible)

Velop or Orbi for a wired backhaul connection?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:27 AM PDT

I have a 3 story house (finished attic) with the main wireless router on the first floor. Needless to say the attic gets crippling to no wifi. Id like to have a tv/ps4/comp set up in it. My 2nd floor will just be a wifi zone.

I recently ran a wire from the attic to my basement/first floor for a dedicated wired backhaul. Im trying to decide between Orbi and Velop and am having a hard time. I dont need the dedicated wireless backhaul of the Orbi anymore, but i do like the extra ethernet ports on the Orbi.

Does anyone have experience or know how the two systems work with the wired backhaul?

I was having a hard time searching for my exact question with my mobile device. Sorry if its been answered.

    Thanks,

    Guppy.

Edit. Also, if anyone has another option for my internet solution, let me know! I want whole house wifi and wired connections for my main devices. (Tv, ps4, comp)

Just upgraded my router - Still not getting advertised speeds

    Posted: 02 May 2018 05:22 PM PDT

So back in March I had Spectrum replace our modem and I was getting over 200 Mb/s when my PC was directly connected to the modem - Great for me, but I have a lot of devices that are dependent on the WiFi. With the old router connected, I was only able to achieve 97 - 100 Mb/s. The service technician said you won't be getting your advertised speeds unless you upgrade your router, I replaced my old Netgear Wireless G from 2009 with a Netgear Nighthawk AC1750. Went through the setup with no issues and ran a couple of speed tests.

My WiFi speeds improved, I was barely getting 50 Mb/s and I'm stuck getting 84 - 90 (actually worse desktop speeds). However, my desktop PC is getting nowhere near the advertised 200 down. Is there anything I can do to get these speeds again?

EDIT: I also swapped the internet cable too, I was using the old one from the Wireless G instead of the one that came with the Nighthawk. Still no noticeable change.

    question about moca network

    Posted: 02 May 2018 05:01 PM PDT

Hi all, i would appreciate any help with this as I can't seem to come up with the best solution.

I have a direct ethernet connection from FIOS into my home office on the 2nd floor. The house is wired with coax in every room. I have a router, switch, and access point.

In my office, the ethernet from the ONT connects into an 8 port switch. The AP is also connected to this switch.

I want wired ethernet in my downstairs living room for my Nvidia shield and in my bedroom for my other nvidia shield.

The office, the downstairs living room, and the bedroom all have coax wired to them.

What is the best way to make this happen? Running ethernet through the walls would be my first choice, but my landlord does not want me to drill any holes so thats out.

Could i theoretically connect it like this?

    https://imgur.com/a/e0tsJHT

If not, what is the best way I could set this up without wiring ethernet through the walls?

Also, here is a layout of the house in case it helps

    Thank you!

    Port Question

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:58 PM PDT

Sorry for the many questions. I'm just learning about networking and such. So my CM8200 came in and I see that it has 2 ports on the back for Ethernet. Can I plug in my router into one and my main computer into the other? Or should I just plug the router into one port and plug my computer into the router.

    Thanks for the continued help!

Problem accessing Synology on my home network, following change of ISP/router

    Posted: 02 May 2018 09:19 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I'm hoping you can help me. I have the following setup:

Virgin Media Superhub 3 <-> NETGEAR PL1200-100UKS PowerLine Adapters <-> NETGEAR GS205-100UKS Gigabit Switch <-> Synology DS216j NAS

My Virgin Media modem/router has the IP address of 192.168.0.1, and I have configured the DHCP to reserve the IP address of 192.168.0.3 for the Synology NAS (which works).

The Synology NAS therefore has a DHCP issued IP address of 192.168.0.3, and showing a default gateway of 192.168.0.1. The Synology NAS has a machine name of "syn".

    With me so far?

With previous routers I was able to access my Synology NAS DiskStation interface from anywhere on my internal network, on any device, on any browser, via http://syn:5000.

Since upgrading to the new router, I can access it via IP (e.g. http://192.168.0.3:5000) but not via hostname (e.g. http://syn:5000).

I've been trying to work out what's going on for hours, and I'm at the point of trying to pull my hair out! Here are my findings so far:

    • If I ping "syn" from a device on my internal network, it shows an external IP of 92.242.132.24 (some company called barefruit.co.uk).

    • If I try to connect to via http://syn.local:5000/ it works!

What on earth is happening here? How can I avoid the need to add .local when referencing internal machines on my network?

Thank you in advance kind people!

When i troubleshoot, it says "Ethernet doesnot have a valid IP configuration". But the internet works, if i connect directly to the router through my long cable, it works. Any solutions? Thanks

How to isolate one PC from the internet at the press of a icon?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:48 PM PDT

I have a small home network. At it's core is a Netgear GS724T managed switch which was donated to me. I also have a teenage son who refuses to help in the house and is on Minecraft until 1 am. Then won't get up for school and is rude to his mum.

What I want to do is disconnect him from the net easily without having to go and press the power button. Maybe we can have a script that can be activated at the press of an icon on screen from the laptop that will isolate that one PC from the net. Maybe a CLI script to make changes to the switch configuration, and back again. But I want it to still have access to the printer and other PC's. All the hardware is in the attic in a 6u cabinet so physically unplugging is not practical.

I considered a vlan but then it won't be able to access the printer etc without a 2nd router and I don't have the knowledge to set this up. Has anyone any ideas how this can be done? Thanks.

    Playstation 4 - DMZ

    Posted: 02 May 2018 12:35 PM PDT

    Hi guys

I am having problems with my Playstation 4 voice chat. Whenever I join a party with one of my friends, we get a "Cannot use voice chat with the following player. This might be because of NAT type limitations" error. This is a really well known error and is well documented.

I have tried enabling UPnP and have also forwared all correct ports on my PS4, but still no luck.

It seems the only option is to put my PS4 in the DMZ.

Can anybody give a well educated answer if this is something reasonable? I do find it very questionable...

I understand what the DMZ is etc. I would just like to know if somebody can give a detailed reason why this is ok or absolutely ridiculous! :)

Thanks for your help in advance.

Two ISP providers under one roof? Is it possible.

    Posted: 02 May 2018 03:54 PM PDT

Long story short I live with my mother who is disabled and needs some help time to time, and her service is Comcast.

Long story short I can't stand their service, or lack of service. Constantly spotty internet. Etc.

My mom won't budge on switching providers but a thought came into my head about maybe just sticking a modem with a different ISP in my room. Question is, is if its possible to have more then one ISP under one roof? And basically all I need is internet, is there a way to only get internet and not a bundle I.e cable and telephone...etc.

If I turn off DHCP on my main Virgin modem/router, can I then have another router on my network run DHCP?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:42 AM PDT

As per title, I currently have a Virgin Media superhub 3 - which I've discovered today has a crap DHCP service (doesn't offer DHCP service for search domains) (thanks /u/tsnork!)

Therefore, what I'd like to do is disable the DHCP service on the Virgin router/modem, and then enable DHCP on another router in my network.

I'd still like devices to be able to connect to the wireless on my Virgin router - is this going to be possible?

Could someone walk me through what settings i should configure on each? It looks like I can disable DHCP on the Virgin router relatively easily.

Would it be as simple as first turning on my second router/modem, and enabling DHCP (it won't have internet access at this point). And then turning on the Virgin router (with DHCP disabled), so that it get's assigned an internal network IP from the DHCP enabled router?

    Thank you in advance!

I am revamping my familiy's network, and will attach a diagram with all the information. In short the network covers mostly wireless phones and computers. The network is not gigabit and will never be. The network will cover the house, and the garage. I'm just looking for input or if I have forgotten anything.

Zyxel homeplug AV2 need some help

    Posted: 02 May 2018 03:20 AM PDT

So as the title states I need some help, however not with connecting them or any of that sort no. What I need help with is understanding some jperf output made when measuring the throughput.

every once in a while I get some major speed spikes going from 300Mbit/s - 800Mbit/s this spike only lasts for at most 3 - 4 seconds and then it's back down to 300ish Mbit/s. What is making it spike like that as I just send data and do nothing special to jperf. I just click run and start sending UDP packets to the server side.

Which router and modem should I keep?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 02:55 AM PDT

Hello, I am moving out of my current apartment and leaving behind a router and modem for my roommates (the lesser of what I have). The modem choices are Arris surfboard SB6190 or Netgear CM500-1AZNAS. The router choices are TP-Link Archer C7 v2 AC1750 or Netgear R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 (probably v2). I've searched online and have found mixed results. Suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
