Home Networking Gigabit Home Network Hardware

Home Networking Gigabit Home Network Hardware

    Gigabit Home Network Hardware

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:27 PM PDT

I just purchased Xfinity's gigabit service for my new home where me and two housemates will live. The place is a town home with 3 floors and about 1800 sq ft.

The house come pre-wired for ethernet with a switchboard in the garage. I got the following hardware:

Modem: Arris SURFboard SB18200 (DOCSIS 3.1)

Firewall: Ubquiti USG Unifi Security Gateway

    switchboard in garage

Ubiquiti Unifi Switch 8 (60W POE) --- Unifi Cloud Key

    switchboard---- various hardwired devices

Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-PRO-E (1 for now, may add another)

What do you guys think about this? Will this allow us to take advantage of the gig speeds? Should we add another AP with the 3 floor setup (plus 4th floor roof patio)? Is the 8 port PoE switch enough?

I have heard that the cloud key requires regular backups, and I will probably look into a UPS for the network gear in the garage.

I'll be using the USG for the VPN and to configure some network segmentation for my homelab, as I work in Cyber Security and want to build up a lab for testing exploits/malware. I will probably look into running my own DNS, but at first will just point to 1.1.1.1.

    Thanks!

    EDIT: formatting and spelling

When Spectrum says “Speeds starting at 100 mbps” is that too good to be true? In reality, doesn’t this mean it will be the maximum not starting speed?

Need advice on what equipment I should buy to extend or maintain better WiFi in my house.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 07:54 PM PDT

Just a forewarning I'm not super tech savvy!

So my house currently has a Xfinity Dual-Band 802.11 ac modem/router that is located in the living area on the first floor. My gaming equipment and where I do my school work though is in the basement which is still in range of the router but the signal is weak, making my games lag and having spotty connections with my phone and laptop. Any suggestions for a WiFi extender, or some type of a bridging system as hardwiring a LAN cable to the main modem to another router in the basement would be unreasonable for my situation. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

    Am I doing it right?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 07:48 PM PDT

I have lurked for a bit. Wanted to know if I off to a good start.

I will have this AP upstairs in a 1400 sq ft house that has a brick chimney in the middle.

The important stuff like my PS4 and my desktop are wired. Hopefully I'll be fine. I have a Docsis 3.0 Modem that well exceeds the 200Mbps that I have from my provider.

    thoughts? comments?

Just bought: Unifi AP AC lite & Edge Router X for my house network.

    Thanks

Issues with D-Link DIR 615 router

    Posted: 01 May 2018 07:15 PM PDT

So basically I recently started living with a relative and that's when this router started having issues. What happens is sometimes the router will drop a few or all of the devices on the network every 5-15 minutes or so. I'm not sure if it does the same for devices with a wired connection because with all our devices we connect to the router wirelessly. Usually I'm able to reconnect after a bit but it's annoying. When I am home alone however there's no problems so I'm assuming that its the number of devices connected to the router? Honestly I'm not very networking literate so I'm not sure what other details I need to provide about this problem. We tried updating the firmware to the newest version on the Dlink website but the issue persists. Here's the support page:

    Residential Fiber Router

    Posted: 01 May 2018 06:09 PM PDT

I am having fiber installed in my home soon. I was wondering if there was any fiber routers that are not crazy expensive that I could use? I plan on doing some testing with fiber runs in my house also instead of ethernet.

I have 2 WiFi networks and I wanna get to all devices from each network

    Posted: 01 May 2018 06:43 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm pretty new to networks so bear with me please. In my house I have two WiFi setup to be able to cove the whole house but the problem is that when I'm connected to one I can't connect to the devices that are connected to the other Wifi. So for example I have Raspberry Pi in one network and when I'm connected to the other I just can't connect to it. Also idk if there is way so that my devices can witch between them seamlessly. Can anyone help me accessing all the IPs from both networks? Thank you.

    Terminating cat cable

    Posted: 01 May 2018 05:04 PM PDT

I had my home cabled with CAT6 (I think!) cable 7 years ago when i bought it. I'd like to cut one of the cables up the loft and terminate it on each end, so that I can put a switch up the there and put a couple of my servers up there.

I didn't realise until I've started watching videos that it seems to be really easy to do, with the right tools.

However I want to check what I've understood about the connectors.

Searching for CAT 6 connectors gives loads of results, but they are all cat 5e connectors.

I'm fairly sure I don't have cat5e cables, so the cables will be 6 or 6A.

If I've understood correctly the actual wires inside are the same - perhaps thicker - but the main difference is in cat 6 there's a cross shaped plastic thing and in 6a there's even more shielding. This means the cable is less flexible and bulkier.

Do I need to worry when I'm buying connectors about the width of the cable? Will I struggle to get cat6 cable into a cat5e connector?

Are there any brands of connectors that are good quality? I'm not going to use very many so cost isn't much of an issue, I'd rather have something easier/more robust.

Wireless Bridge to Server Rack & Workstation | More Inside

    Posted: 01 May 2018 04:47 PM PDT

    Hi All,

So I'm in a bit of a pickle, I need network access at two points of my new place of residence, however, I CANNOT run ethernet cables. I also DO NOT want to use powerline adapters as they suck hard. So, this comes to my last resort, wireless bridges. Below is what's going through my head when I think about how to set this up.

Comcrap (Comcast) Modem/Router -----> UbiquitiEdgeRouterX ------> Ubiquiti WAP-PRO --------> Wireless Bridge --------> Managed Switch in Rack -----> Workstation / Server Rack

My first thought is to grab an older router, flash DDWRT onto it and run it as a bridge but I thought maybe buying one would work also. Another thought would be to grab another Ubiquiti AP and somehow use that to wireless bridge me.

Have anyone else here done this type of configuration?

    Thanks!

An added question: If the wireless is bridged, then all data that is not either https or otherwise would be in plaintext, giving an attack vector to actively sniff packets in my network? Would this be true?

    Speeds Too Slow

    Posted: 01 May 2018 04:27 PM PDT

hi, I recently hired an electrician to wire an Ethernet port into my home. I went to plug it in to my computer and it couldn't Identify the cable or it tries to identify but nothing happens. I went to my router and it had a amber led lightcoming from the LAN port but it lasts for 5ish seconds and proceeds to go away. This happens every 5 or so minutes. I then went to my router forums and read that my router doesn't handle speeds of 10 mbs and it so happens that my Ethernet has speeds of 10 mbs. What can i do to reach higher speeds?

    VPN client for Sophos UTM?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 02:49 PM PDT

    Hi folks!!

Simple question - I use Sophos UTM on a dedicated box to protect my home network from intrusion, do basic QoS, etc.

My only issue is that Sophos does not seem to allow VPN clients. I would like to run a VPN service into my home network but that means configuring each device to be accessible over VPN.

Has anyone successfully configured Sophos to act a s a central VPN client to a popular service such as NordVPN?

    TIA

Outdated full on Mac User needs advice on upgrading

    Posted: 01 May 2018 08:30 AM PDT

Have an old Airport Extreme and a newer Airport Express...was looking to upgrade the Extreme today and just read that Apple is discontinuing them...probably not the best time to buy!

I'd like to have a nice fast network, but preferable would like my newer Express to work on it, considering I just bought that like a year ago...

Really haven't looked at any equipment for the home network other than Apple for the past 8 years or so...but I figure now is the time to switch. Any advice will be appreciated.

    Anything "replace" onhubs yet?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:52 AM PDT

    Fios customer, 2 story.

Fios router downstairs connected to onhub 1(hub acts as router)

Upstairs moca adapter to onhub 2 (got the the onhub set up to do upstairs wifi and added extra ethernet ports for tv/game system)

Anything newer come out that can function similarly? Paid about $300 for both onhubs a while back. They run decently.

Hoping to eventually get mu-mimo capable router, speedwise on a 100 plan so AC is fine. Wouldnt mind to have the router do client vpn either.

Looking for new router with a few specific features

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:53 PM PDT

Hi there! You can probably tell, but this is my first reddit post. I've been doing home networking for over 20 years, am a software dev by trade, and have a good understanding of the basics and many of the finer points of networking and routing. I've been through numerous Netgear/DLink routers over the years, running original and 3rd party firmwares (anyone remember Sveasoft??), and currently have a Securifi Almond+). I've wired the house myself with Cat5+ and have about 40 drops scattered around our 2 story home. My current frustrations are that I've implemented a Pi-Hole for DNS but would like to use its DHCP as well, but can't (easily) turn off the DHCP in the Almond+. Also, I have a son who does more gaming than he ought, and would like to be able to put some technical impediments in the way (please let's not get into a parenting/philosophical discussion, though; just stick to the technical...). The Almond router has the apparent ability to disallow devices access to the network, but this feature remains completely unstable and therefore useless. I would also like to be able to do some monitoring of network usage by client device.

So in summary, I'm looking for a router that can:

    1. have its DHCP disabled
    2. provide some tools for restricting network access (ideally by target domain/ip)
    3. perhaps offer some level of monitoring/reporting

I am fine with, and might even prefer, a solution that is just an ethernet router, leaving WiFi access as a separate problem to be solved. I currently have a few older Netgear routers running DD-WRT as access points, but might switch to something else. The WiFi question is beyond the scope of this post, though. It's also possible that the right solution is either an older Cisco router off eBay, or a firewall appliance of some sort.

    Thanks for any good leads/discussion!

Do I need a Router? [Corporate Network Design (University Assignment)]

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:39 PM PDT

I'm looking at FortiNet Firewalls and have learned that they can route data between WAN and LAN. And that having a firewall as the edge device instead of a gateway router is normal.

Inside my LAN, I'm using a server for DHCP, DNS, and AD. All these connected through just switches and DMZ segmented by using FortiNet V-DOM.

I have about 100 users and possibly 200-300 devices. But since my Server is handling DHCP and switches routing data between the Firewall, DHCP/DNS/AD Server, and User devices.

Do I need a router? Have I made a silly mistake?

    primitive network segmentation?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:00 PM PDT

Greetings r/homenetworking, I'd like to preface this post by thanking you all for taking the time to read this and possibly assist me.

My level of knowledge is almost zero when it comes to networking. The most I know is how to change SSID passwords and accessing a router web page. Though I am not tech illiterate.

I'm faced with a dilemma in which I suspect has no solution unless I jump into the rabbit hole of networking. I am willing to do that but my situation gives me little time to find a solution for now.

To get to the point, I have flatmates who's computer hygiene is lacking. And recently one of their machines were hit with ransomware which in turn infected everyone on the network. I was not aware that this was even possible. After formatting and attempting to recover data for days I do not ever want to deal with that again.

    My goal is to put each of our machines in our own separate sub-network while using a single line from our ISP. I've googled for many days and have boiled it down to 3 solutions;

    1. Purchasing a consumer router which provides a guest network. But this is simply one extra sub-network and there's 4 of us including me.

    2. VLANS, this is an excellent solution which I wish I could implement but the level of technicality is over my head. If there is a step by step guide on setting one of these up with zero knowledge on networking please point me in the right direction.

    3. The "3 dumb routers" solution proposed by Steve Gibson. This so far is the best and surefire way for a layman to setup a segmented network that I've been able to discover. The problem with this solution from my understanding is the double NAT. Especially since my flatmates and I game regularly.

So you see I am left with no real solutions. I am simply lost and confused and at my wits end. I will be grateful for any bits of advice. Cheers!

    Troubleshooting Internet slowdowns

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:07 PM PDT

Hey Guys, so I'll start with some background and then proceed into the issues im facing.

I just moved into a basement suite, and the router is upstairs, so I have no physical access to it. I do however have complete access to the Network Management Interface on the router. This means all my devices connect via wi-fi. I Am working on getting a line from the router down here so I can setup my own router for more control/privacy. The current router broadcasts a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz network. All my devices are currently connected to the 5GHz network. The internet connection is a 150/150 fiber line from Telus.

I have currently configured all my devices I'll be discussing to the 1.1.1.1 DNS servers from CloudFlare.

My iMac gets internet speeds of about 175/150. My PC gets internet speeds at around 120/20.

While the internet on the PC is still usable, I am running into some problems while playing online games, more specifically Overwatch. In game I typically sit around 60ms Latency, but often times the game jumps up to 300ms and then slowly works its way back down. It also has a decent amount of lag with teleportation and glitchy character model movements. As my internet speeds on my PC are very different then my iMac )(which is just 10feet away), I'm concerned that there is something wrong with my network configuration on my PC.

Are there any tips to address this aside from the obvious, hardwired connection (which I can not do at the moment).

Using NordVPN free trial, but would like to continue having port 3389 accessible for RDP through ISP IP

    Posted: 01 May 2018 11:35 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Disclaimer:: I know that having RDP on the open internet is a terrible idea. Please entertain the fact that I have a very specific need for this and nothing critical or work related is hosted on this server. I also have an RDP program that blacklists IPs after one failed attempt.

I got a VPN and I'd like to use it, however my NOIP DDNS updated to the VPN's IP and I can no longer access my server through DNS name or original ISP IP address.

Somehow I'd like every port to use the VPN except 3389. Is this possible?

    Thanks a ton!~

Router Config for a Managed Switch Using VLANs

    Posted: 01 May 2018 07:01 AM PDT

I want to host a TeamSpeak server at home, and imagine it's a good idea to put it on a separate VLAN/subnet so it can't directly connect with my home media server and other home devices, since it will allow external access. I have a managed switch I use for an isolated home lab that doesn't need external access, so I'm wondering if I can somehow configure another VLAN/subnet for just the TeamSpeak server and have it isolated while also allowing external access.

The problem is that my router has no kind of VLAN support, so I don't see a way to get a default gateway on a different subnet than the router default IP resides.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

Difficulty setting up VLANs for the first time

    Posted: 01 May 2018 10:21 AM PDT

I recently purchased the Netgear GS108Tv2 managed switch for home use with setting up a Proxmox cluster and I'm having a tough time figuring out VLANs. I have 3 servers, a NAS, and my main desktop plugged in to the switch right now and my switch is plugged into my Netgear Orbi router. My goal is to be able to use my desktop (Windows 10) on both the main network with full internet connection, and the VLAN network to manage the subnet. My issue is that the Orbi router only has one option for "VLAN/Bridge Settings" and whenever I enable it, it immediately takes everything offline with no way to access anything through SSH and all devices lose internet connectivity. It doesn't seem to me like the Orbi has anywhere to set VLAN profile settings to set up a separate subnet and I can't seem to find anywhere to do that on the switch interface either. I know that I am probably missing something completely obvious, but is it possible to achieve my goal with my current setup?

I am also trying to figure out how to set up multicast properly for my proxmox cluster but I am pretty sure I need to put it in its own VLAN first.

Experience with ASUS RMA for Router?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 08:56 AM PDT

Owner of an ASUS RT-AC88U. The router is typically awesome, but I've been having major issues with the 5Ghz radio not working - it advertises, but nobody can connect, or if you can connect, it doesn't connect you to the internet and you constantly get server timeouts.

I'm still within my 2 year limited warranty, and am going to reach out to ASUS to RMA, just wanted to touch base here to see what people's experiences were like since I've read horror stories about their RMA process.

For example, do I need to pay for shipping, should I get tracking, anything I need to do to protect myself (ex. take pictures, etc).

    Thanks so much!

With the new Windows 10 update, it borked my Network Teaming on my gaming system. So, what is the proper way to Team NICs on a gaming/streaming rig for Windows 10?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 08:13 AM PDT

I currently have 3 NICs on my motherboard. (2) 1GB NICs and 1 10GB. I haven't bought a router yet to handle my SFP+ and 10GB NIC, so right now I'm just running them as 1GB. (Here is my rig)

    1. What is the best way to Team the NICs and what protocol should I use? 2 of them are Intel NICs and the 10 is an Aquantia. (ASRock - Fatal1ty X299 Professional Gaming i9 ATX LGA2066 Motherboard)

    Facets:

    • I mainly browse the web, watch videos, and game. I have a NAS with SFP+ that I'm thinking about hooking up for a direct 10GB connection, but haven't yet.
    • All NICs are going through a 1GB switch, that goes to a router
    • All DNS goes to a static IP on the NAS that is running PiHole in a docker
    • I have about 22TB of data on the NAS
    • The NAS is running an AMD 5 1600, so its CPU can handle whatever

I had 2 of the NICs Teamed before the update yesterday, the update messed them up somehow, so I had to reset them. Now when I team them they are disabled. If I run the diagnostics, it updates the drivers and enables them, but then disables the team.

Can access port forwarded port externally, from some places.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 05:51 AM PDT

I've been working on this issue for the past couple of weeks but I'm left frustrated as to what could be causing it.

I have 3 services that are port forwarded from my OPNsense router. If I use my phone in 4G, I can connect to those services without any issues, however, if I use other connections, which I know have no filtering or blocking of any kind on them, they refuse to let me connect to them and if I run a curl command against the webpages I'm hosting, they don't get far enough to give me any useful information.

If I telnet the port externally from all the locations I try from, it confirms that the port is open but for some reason refuses to show me content.

I have NAT rules enabled, I have everything configured correctly, or so I think.

Any suggestions or paths for me to take would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Some may feel that this post belongs in /r/techsupport and that is probably the case but I don't want to go through the basic checks of settings that I know people will mention and would rather here some other suggestions. If that ends up being the case, I'll repost there at a later date.
