    Simple Questions - April 29, 2018

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Adventures with i7-8700 non K temperatures

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:09 AM PDT

So this is not a "help me" post. It's more of a "I've found some solutions so I'll post about them so that someone else can read it and won't have to waste a lot of time researching it" kind of post.

TL/DR: Went from ~92C on load to ~73C on load without delid, and increasing Cinebench15 from ~1200 to ~1400.

    My config (the important bits):

    • Phanteks Eclipse TG P400s
    • Asus Z370-H
    • i7-8700 non K
    • Dark Rock 3
    • 2x Silent Wings 3 140 PWM on front
    • 1x Silent Wings 3 120 PWM in the back

I bought non K 8700 because of supply shortages few months ago, and also because I really find overclocking a bit pointless right now. Back in good old days you would buy Celeron 266, slap it on the motherboard, change bus clock from 66 to 100, and you would have it oc'd from 266 to 400 at no cost, without adding any special cooling. Performance increase – 50%. Now you need to fight to get 5-10% better performance, paying in high temperatures and loud cooling. Not really my thing.

    Back to my build.

When I put this together I was greeted with 1200ish Cinebench R15 and 90C+ during 3d rendering. Things weren't looking good. And that was with MCE disabled!

First thing I found was that Asus mobo was massively overvolting that poor CPU. On load I was getting 1.46V! That's crazy high for what this CPU actually needs to be stable at stock speeds.

So I entered BIOS and set offset sign to "-" and offset value to "0.100". This helped – now I was getting hitting up to 87C while rendering. I tried "0.200" but it was to low. While it was ok on load, it was to low on idle – so it was crashing while idle.

Next I set voltage to manual. I started with 1.20V. This lowered my temperatures considerably – now I was getting 78-79C tops! I lowered it to 1.15V and it was still 100% stable – that's 0.3V below what Asus was setting! My temperatures dropped to 72-74C during rendering – and I use 3d software that gets temps way higher than Prime95. At 1.1V I started getting BSODs from time to time, so I went back to 1.15V.

There was still one more problem – my Turbo Boost only lasted ~15 seconds. After that it would drop from 4300 on all cores to 3700. Obviously it wasn't thermal throttling. So there is another type of throttling called power limits. Why it is there – I don't know. Supposedly it is there to avoid hitting the thermal threshold. But Asus sets this limit way too low.

There are three limit settings in BIOS – Long duration, Short duration, and Time window. CPU can use over "Long duration" watts for "Time window" seconds. After that it will be throttled down to limit power usage to under "Long duration" threshold. By default Asus set this to 65W for my 8700. While rendering it was using 100W. So it was power throttled after "time window" was up which was about 15s. "Short duration" limit is amount of watts that if CPU hits it, it will be throttled down immediately.

Supposedly you can set both this limits to max (4097) and never worry about it again. If your CPU gets too hot it will thermal throttle anyway, so there is supposedly no risk involved. Being cautious I set them to "Long duration" = 105, "Short duration" = 110. While I was still on 1.35V (using "-0.100" offset) I was hitting up to 126W, so I assumed staying below 110W should be safe (considering the CPU stays under 75C). I left "time window" on Auto, because at 1.15V it never went above 102W during rendering anyway. BTW – you can check how much watts CPU is drawing in HWiNFO under "CPU Package Power".

Using this settings my CPU stays on all cores 4300 indefinitely (while rendering). This also bumped my Cinebench R15 to 1400+. With temps never going above 75C, and ~36C at idle with 24-25C ambient.

As for my fan setup – I've added another Silent Wings 3 140 PWM on top-back position. I control all fans with SpeedFan. They stay at flat 40% all the way to 60C (literally inaudible - even at night), and then linearly go up to 100% at 70C with hysteresis set to 15C. This stops them from going up and down on small temperature fluctuations during rendering. Also staying at 40% up to 60C means that they spin up only during rendering, and stay quiet during normal usage.

I hope someone may find this helpful. Feel free to ask any questions.

Building a new PC to replace my very old one. Seeking advice on some of the options I have come up with.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 10:43 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Primarily gaming

Surfing the web, and watching videos. I tend to be a tab monster, and usually run programs like discord, with the occasional browser open while playing games

I have been wanting to get into some 3d design however wouldn't be complicated or professional quality.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    I currently have a Dell ST2210B which is a 1920 X 1080 monitor.

I would like to play modern video games at this resolution. However, my budget doesn't really include a new graphics card. So, I would be using the 560ti I have on hand. So, I can accept that I probably won't get 60fps on medium. I am hoping I can pull 30+ on medium though.

I plan on buying a 1070 or higher in the future but that will be at least 6+ months down the road.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

~550 is what I want to spend around for the parts. I am budgeting that 550 for a CPU, MOBO, RAM, Power Supply. Stuff I must update. I would like to buy a nice case at max $90. Since this is kind of a splurge on my end. I am not including it in the parts budget. I have other generic dell cases I can build in though. Which is why it is a splurge for me.

So, the full budget would be about 640-650.

I currently have a 560ti which I received from a friend which I plan on using. I can understand that this would be a bottleneck to anything modern that I will build. However, a GPU is something to me that can be upgraded later, as long as it can give me the performance described above currently.

I would also like to salvage what I can from my current build posted below. Although it may be the case that it isn't worth it.

In what country are you purchasing your parts? US

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

This is currently the computer I am using now. As some of you can tell it is old. So I am going to have to buy basically a whole new system, PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

I made 4 different part lists using PCPartPicker. I stalk /r/BuildaPCsales, and plan on buying the parts as best of price I can get. However, I still would like to have an idea of what I want to buy.

    A Ryzen 2600x build

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Proofslank/saved/48c8K8

A Ryzen 2400g build. The best graphics card I have currently is a 560ti. So, I am not sure if the 2400g is the better move and just ignoring the 560ti. Or (although I doubt it) maybe having the dedicated 560ti would increase the overall performance.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Proofslank/saved/KZmwVn

    An I5 8600k build

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Proofslank/saved/2RtzMp

An I7 8700k. Which I would only buy maybe open box for ~240-260.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Proofslank/saved/ccsD8d

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Because of my budget I just want the best price/performance I can get. With maybe the extra effort to future proof my build. That way it can be upgraded cheaper in the future.

I am usually an intel fanboy, and know that intel has better gaming performance. However, at lot of bench tests see a small difference in frames when it matters. However, a much larger increase in productivity in Ryzen. So Ryzen would give me close enough performance in games, while better performance in everything else. Seems like the better buy in this case.

So currently I am thinking a Ryzen build is maybe the better buy. I can also buy a good motherboard, and since AM4 is guaranteed to be supported by the Ryzen 3 in 2020. It gives me the opportunity to upgrade my cpu then and be somewhat up to date.

Hoping to receive some suggestions on my build, and what path you guys think I should take

    Update

Thank you everybody for your help & suggestions. This is exactly what I was hoping to recieve. As many of your are suggesting I am going to go with a Ryzen build.

Some of you mentioned that a 560ti( a 7 y.o. card) can preform close to the Vega 11 on a 2400g. Which is interesting. Wouldn't this mean that buying a non-apu version cpu & pairing it with my 560ti would be the better option?

Alot of you suggest just buying a newer card, and cut in other places. So I will give that some thought. I will probably drop the case for now, and the extra room on said GPU.

It was also mentioned I might be able to get something out of my old components. So I will look into that, since some money is better than no-money.

Custom Build - Engraved Glass - NZXT H200i "Kojima Tribute"

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:07 AM PDT

Hi /r/buildapc! I've got something new to share with you all once again! About a month ago I posted a custom engraved Corsair Crystal 570x, which was very kindly received. The build itself is still underway whilst I educate myself on some of the finer things (liquid cooling, custom loops, how to custom sleeve cables). But in the interim, I decided to attempt a second prototype; this time catering more towards my own sensibilities. While the crystal 570x was more of a proof of concept, this case will become my own day to day rig. And unlike before where I used the stock glass panels that came with the crystal, I opted to replace the NZXT panel with a much thicker piece of glass (you'll see why). But enough rambling! I give you my mini-itx "masterpiece".

    NZXT H200i - "Kojima Tribute"

As soon as the new x470 mini-itx boards come in, this things is getting put together :D

    Here's the planned build:

    No more stock cooler!

(Here's my shameless plug to sell you stuff that you clearly don't need, but might want!)

For anyone that might be interested in something like this, definitely feel free to PM me or e-mail us at info@creativeartglass.com. This is a pretty labor intensive modification, and probably isn't for everyone, but if you're looking to create something really one of a kind, this might be right up your alley.

Dell Inspiron Ryzen 5 Prebuild - is it worth it?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:28 AM PDT

Dell is selling their Ryzen 5 1400 build for $1000 AUD ($750 USD). It seems like it's a really good price, considering that buying the parts outright would cost more than the actual build.

Should I buy it, or build my own?

Trouble entering bios with USB keyboard

Case Corsair - 760T Black ATX Full Tower Case Had previously
Power Supply EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Had previously

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Installed new Motherboard, CPU, and RAM, using old hard drives, power supply, and graphics card.

Can't get into BIOS when booting. I got into BIOS twice. First time, I disabled fast boot and then rebooted. It went back to the same screen prompting me to hit delete or F2 to enter bios. I was unable to enter as it no longer recognized my keyboard, although the keyboard has power. Second time I got in, disabled fast boot; and booted up off of my 960 which has windows 10 installed. It loaded windows fine, I was able to install drivers; but when I restarted it went back to the same prompt, which I can't get past again.

The motherboard either gives me a code 99, 64, or A2. I've reset the CMOS 6 times now over the past two days with varying degrees of success (third time I reset it was when I was able to get it to boot off my 960).

I've also called ASUS support and outside of using a PS-2 keyboard (which I don't have and drove to best buy, office max, and a computer parts store to try to find with no luck), they had no real suggestions.

I've HAVE tried two keyboards, both USB connections, (it won't recognize my wired Corsair K65, bought a cheap HP to test that ended up working the couple of times I've gotten it to boot)

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm at wits end here. I'm not an expert, so troubleshooting has been slow on this. I'm hoping there is something obvious I'm missing - I've now read the manual to my board cover to cover and spent several hours on google; but I don't have much of a tech background - so I'm sure I could be missing something obvious.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 03:00 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

My main use for this PC will be gaming and I'm hoping the GPU I've selected will be able to crush most games on ultra. However I will also be doing some video and photo editing hence the reasonably large amount of ram selected.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

As previously mentioned I would hope this build could run most games on ultra, 100 fps+ at 1440p. I am considering buying a 4k monitor but will hold off for the time being.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My Budget is £1800 but can stretch to £2000

As previously mentioned I have been saving up for a long time and despite the inflated GPU prices want to finally take the plunge and build this pc. I have a very old build now that will not currently boot and has no real salvageable parts to use/sell on. I was hoping to just get some feedback, see if there are any glaring mistakes I've made or any advice that could be given!

    Headphone recommendations?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 02:54 PM PDT

    Hi there!!

So I have had the same Razer Banshee: Starcraft 2 headphones for a long time (The cord is frayed and taped up. Mic doesn't work anymore. Headphone pads are disintegrating and hot glue gunned back on) But I love the sound and fit, however I'm thinking of replacing it.

When I get headphones, I need the pads to be cloth or something squishier than the plastic/rubbery ear pads because I wear glasses and I'v had headphone in the past (like the Sony Gold Wireless Headset) and it gives me bad headaches from my glasses digging into my head.

The headphones don't need a mic, if it does cool. But I mostly want them for music, and wondered if anyone had any recommendations!

    Thanks!!

I need some help with a PC for VR for about 2200$

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:19 AM PDT

I've finally got the money for a gaming PC after using a low-mid tier laptop for a few years, and I need some help to build the PC. I've never built a PC before, so sorry if something is totally wrong.

This is what I came up with:

    Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z370M D3H 140$

    CPU: INTEL CORE I7-8700K 400$

    CPU cooler: NOCTUA NH-D14 94$

    Memory: CORSAIR 16GB Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000MHz 230$

    GPU: EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X FTW 917$

    HDD: SEAGATE BARRACUDA 3TB 3.5" 7200 RPM 64 MB 93$

    SSD: SAMSUNG 250GB 960 EVO M.2 138$

    Case: NZXT SOURCE 340 81$

    PSU: SEASONIC S12 II 620W 85$

I'm not sure about a few questions regarding this build. Do I really need the 8700K, will the PSU be enough, will this all fit into the case?

    I appreciate any help.

    [Update]Operation Matterhorn: Removing a 9y/o CPU from a cooler

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 09:24 AM PDT

So I made a post about how to get my CPU that's glued to a Matterhorn with 9y/o thermal paste onto my mainboard. Turns out, I can't, I definitely had to seperate them. Didn't work with heat, so I had to go the other way. Didn't have time to actually feeze it as I was moving to a new appartment.
Today, I finally did. Yesterday I put them in feezer. Today, I gently convincd the CPU to let go of the Matterhorn - with a hammer. Put a wooden board on its edge and gently hammered the other side of the board, so that some of the shock would be dampened by the wood.
After doing this fom each side a bit, the CPU fell off. And bent some pins on the landing. Reset them with a mechanical pencil - looks like new. Except maybe for the thermal paste residue.

Next step - removing the thermal paste residue. Probably getting alcohol or something. What do you suggest?

    Edit: Old post

    PUBG Streaming/Recording Build

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 01:16 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

I'm preparing to build/rebuild an existing machine to run PUBG and stream/record via OBS and do some simple video editing. Some of the parts in this list I already have and would like to use them in the new build, if possible. This includes the power supply, monitor, case, OS, and all hard drives.

    Noctua NF-P14s and Noctua NF-A14

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 03:30 PM PDT

Hi! I'm looking for 140mm case fans. I'm going to install up to 4 fans. I want to get maximum CFM with lower noise.

I found those two Noctua. NF-A14 PWM is 1,5x more expensive at my local storage.

I've not found any comparisons about these two fans (both in the same test). I saw their specs on official site but maybe somebody can share a link for test I'm looking? Or leave a feedback about experience of use. Thank you.

My overall budget is about $1500 (including the monitor) and I will only be gaming on it. My only concern is that 16GB of RAM may be better, just don't want to compromise elsewhere when it is so easy to upgrade RAM. Also I got a 240gb PNY SSD instead of a 850 EVO to bring the PC back into my budget, does the PNY look ok? Any other feedback would be very helpful.

Best CPU to use in this build?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:32 AM PDT

This is the setup I am looking to build

I'm having issues with choosing the right processor. I want a processor that is no more than £200, what would be the best possible choice for this setup?

I want to play games at 1080p with medium settings and get 140+ fps.

If you recommend changing other parts, please say. My budget is around £720, but I may add e.g. £10 if it would make a big difference.

EDIT: this is the current build now!

Anyone else feeling a little baited by Fractal Design Re: the Flex VRC-25 and the Connect D1?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 08:02 AM PDT

The cases have been available for quite a while now, but we still have no release or even anticipated release date for these two very simple accessories that were marketed WITH the R6... It's become quite frustrating and I'm starting to feel a bit baited into buying the case under a false pretense.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

CAM software is reading idle CPU temp at 80-95 degrees celsius.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Reapplied thermal paste and reseated cooler onto CPU. Confirmed all cables were installed properly.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

After I reapplied the thermal paste and reseated the AIO, I went into the BIOS and saw that the CPU temp on bios reads the CPU at 44.5 degrees celsius while moments later CAM continues to read around 90 degrees celsius. Any advice is welcome! Thanks!
