I've had so many people add me and I hope i've made some froe2nds doing this. I'm proud to be apart of this community. [link] [comments] |
Elementary OS is not booting up. Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:22 AM PDT I have installed Elementary from a Live USB. There were some issues regarding the graphics drivers, it was getting stuck at the logo during boot, so while installing it I had to use nomodeset to boot up from USB. After the installation I had the same issue. But now even by trying to boot by inserting nomodeset, I am not able to login. Also I tried to add nouveau.modeset=0 instead of nomodeset. But then I am getting a blank screen. Specs:

Complete noob looking for advice Posted: 29 Apr 2018 11:43 AM PDT I have had no experience with Linux in my entire life, but I'm looking to install Linux Mint on my main PC (sick of Windows). I've never installed an OS before and know absolutely nothing about making boot disks/live USB's. Any help? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Apr 2018 01:38 PM PDT For some reason, my printscreen isn't working on lubuntu. So i downloaded a program that lets you choose if you wanna capture the whole screen, only the active window, or an area of the screen. I'd like to be able to run it easily, rather than having to open the "start menu", going to acessories everytime. I have edited xbindkeysrc file to create some shortcuts already, but i don't know how to refer to this program, in order for it to be called. anyone? [link] [comments] |
Mirror effect display by default Posted: 29 Apr 2018 01:29 PM PDT Hello everyone! I am building a teleprompter with an old laptop screen panel and a raspbery pi. This mainly consist of the screen lying flat under a piece of reflective glass on a 45 degree angle. This helps imagining the setup. I would like find away to mirror everything from boot, or if that's not possible maybe from when X server starts. Any ideas? Edit: Possible solution: RPiconfig config.txt options as described here Using display_rotate=0x10000 (horizontal flip) might work. I'll let you know if it does! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2018 12:36 PM PDT there is a tool/program on github that u would really like to try and use. apparently it is a Ruby App you have to install through 'gem install'. ive never used gem before but I just installed Ruby for the first time and apparently it is very similar to pip: just another package manager for apps of a particular programing language. such a Ruby app could potentially also find its way into the official Debian repositories, correct? I know that stuff like rtv (reddit terminal viewer) that are python apps cann. also be regular in the Debian/Ubuntu repos, but from I understand (big noob) installing such a python App through pip would bring the benefit of using a up-to-date version of the app, correct? (my main question is in the title of this post) [link] [comments] |
Issues booting Manjaro (and how I got to this point) Posted: 29 Apr 2018 01:56 PM PDT I'm looking into a decent distro to replace the soon to no longer be supported Windows 7. 1) I installed Mint as a dual boot alongside Windows 7, but the former didn't work well with the laptop's speakers. 2) I installed Manjaro over the Mint install, leaving the swap partition the latter had created and simply using the ex4 partition. Manjaro worked fine for the short time I fiddled with it. 3) Due to strange circumstances I decided to install Manjaro over itself as a simple clean copy to restore default settings. This time however Manjaro wouldn't let me choose "install alongside" and required me to edit the partitions myself, which I tried to do, but I don't think I have enough knowledge of how Linux and Manjaro work to understand what I'm doing. 4) GRUB wouldn't boot and I couldn't get any online suggestions to work for me. 5) I booted the Mint live disc and installed and used boot-repair to restore the MBR Windows boot loader, and I can boot Windows 7 again. 6) I still can't work out how to boot into my Manjaro partition, or reinstall GRUB or similar. 7) My BIOS appears to be MBR, though I think it might support UEFI, but I'm afraid to fiddling with it as it might ruin my current setup. So this is where I am now. Is there anything I can do to get easy access to my Manjaro partition? Windows 7 will need to be replaced before 2020, but I want to make sure what I try and replace it with will work. I'm tempted to just install Mint and then Manjaro over it again since that seemed to work last time. Thanks for any assistance. [link] [comments] |
Bad archive mirror on install (on Vbox) Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:44 AM PDT So I got this message after installing "kali bad archive mirror". So I went back and installed without mirror. I looked into this and have seen several threads about just adding it after warns in sources.list So I went ahead and did that. But when I tried to run the update and upgrade, it gave me an error "Temporary failure resolving 'http.kali.org'" So then I added google server (8.8.8.8) and tried it again but still giving me the error "Temporary failure resolving 'http.kali.org'" I do have internet connection, used the ping and curl commands to check Where do I go from here? Is there any reason to use minimal Ubuntu over minimal Debian? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:37 PM PDT That is for installing my own preference of wm and whatnot overtop of. A minimal Ubuntu installation seems to defeat the whole point of ubuntu in my mind, but maybe there's benefits? [link] [comments] |
Can't connect to the internet on Arch linux Posted: 29 Apr 2018 01:15 AM PDT I just installed arch linux for the first time, and I'm having serious trouble connecting to the internet. I'm currently connected by ethernet cable to my router, but can't access the internet at all or even the LAN. So I tried checking the interfaces with 'ip a': 'enp2s0: <BROADCAST MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisk noop state DOWN group defaulr qlen 1000 link/ether 00:1d....etc' I tried ifup enp2s0 but got 'ifup: command not found'. I tried systemctl restart networking but got: 'Failed to restart networking.servixe: Unit networking.service not found' I'm completely stumped, especially given that I could easily access the internet and install base packages on the live arch usb, it was only now that I've rebooted I'm having these problems. DHCP server not responding for second network Posted: 29 Apr 2018 09:54 AM PDT I have a DHCP server configured to run for two networks. One is the network it is directly connected to and the second is my guest network, but I am not getting an IP issued when Im connected to that second network (10.0.1.0/24). TCPDump shows the requests being received on its local interface, but I don't show any replies. Everything works fine for the 10.0.0.0/24 network, which the server is directly connected to. I can statically assign an IP and still reach the dhcp server. Here is my dhcp config below:

Having issues setting up eclipse in Linux. Could use some help! Posted: 29 Apr 2018 08:57 AM PDT Hello, I was able to install eclipse on my machine but when I run it and try to add tomcat, I keep getting the error "Unknown version of Tomcat was specified." I am on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS the directory I put tomcat in was /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-9.0.7 and when I run tomcat via terminal I get these as my CATALINA properties:
I understand eclipse is looking for my CATALINA_HOME but I put /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-9.0.7 in Eclipse so I don't get why it isn't working? I'm trying this with tomcat 9, but tomcat 8.5 had the same issue so figured maybe I'm doing something wrong? Additionally, eclipse installed in /home/user/eclipse/jee-oxygen/eclipse and I have to navigate to the folder to start it. Is there anyway I can move this to the application folder so I can get a icon on the sidebar instead of having to navigate to the folder? Thank you for reading! [link] [comments] |
.Xinitrc, startx and Gaps Focus Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:12 AM PDT I use lightDM, for that reason I cannot use .xinitrc as that is only read by startx. Instead I should use i3-gaps autostart scripts to launch applications rather then .xinitrc, for i3 I seem to need to add these things main config with exec <command>. My questions are: Would these commands work:
To restore the previously used wallpaper. When using feh.
Makes pywal iniciate on boot.
Iniciates compton and i3. Those are what I have in Xinitcr.
Would these need the exec command too? I've managed make it so when I boot th OS i3 automicly creates 4 workspaces, each with a set of programs. I want to know how I can use compton(if needed) to make one program in each workspace get focus. I've read a sort of similar thing but that thing only made 1 program only in 1 workspace get focus and it would switch to that workspace automaticly. How can I make compton display subtle shadows? Will it look good with some transparency and blur? Will I need to activate shadows every time I boot up the PC? I want to have neofetch start in one of my autaticly openned terminals after boot, how can I do this? Can I make it so that to stop neofetch pressing a random key and it would let me start typing commands normaly like a normal terminal? [link] [comments] |

[Manjaro]Very Slow Internet Download Speeds Posted: 29 Apr 2018 12:04 AM PDT Hi! I did a fresh install of Manjaro on my Lennovo Ideapad Laptop after ditching Ubuntu 17.10. Its good so far except my download speeds (especially in PACMAN) are very slow. My connection speed is decent (~ 10Mbps) (speedtest: https://i.imgur.com/AEaYORF.png) Speed while downloading anything from Pacman never goes above 60Kbps. (https://i.imgur.com/iSVW3de.png) On other devices I get normal speeds. It almost feels as if it is throttled somehow. I have tride changing the MTU to match my router but no use. Please help me. How can you use a bluetooth keyboard in grub boot loader? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 07:55 PM PDT The title's relatively self explanatory. Bluetooth keyboards are becoming exponentially more common, and I can't figure it out on google. [link] [comments] |
"boot" is full, "Permission denied?" Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:30 PM PDT When booting (Mint) I get a warning that my "boot" partition is full and when I hit the notice it shows me the Devices and Locations page for boot with a warning at the top that says "Could not scan some of the folders contained in "/boot" "Error opening directory "/boot/lost+found". Permission denied" What's going on? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:38 PM PDT Hi.
This default xinitrc will start a basic environment with Twm, xorg-xclock and Xterm (assuming that the necessary packages are installed). Therefore, to start a different window manager or desktop environment, first create a copy of the default xinitrc in your home directory:
Is this really necessary? Btw I'm not using arch. [link] [comments] |
Finding a line in a file Homework Question Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:24 PM PDT So I have this homework question I'm having trouble with. It states my script should: 1)Extract all files from an archive named haystack.tar.gz 2)In the set of extracted files, find the line with the world "metal" in the filename 3) The line contains the word "needle" 4) The line is the last line of the file So this is what I have but I believe it's wrong. tar xvf haystack.tar.gz | find ."metal" | grep -r "needle" [link] [comments] |
