I am having trouble getting Firefox to get magnet links to open in Deluge. Posted: 17 Apr 2018 04:51 AM PDT When I click on the magnet link and a box opens asking me which application I would like to launch the magnet link in, there are no applications listed, so I click the choose application button but when I try to navigate to the /usr directory to look for the deluge program, it says it cannot open it because permission is denied. How do I give it permission? Edit: I'm using Ubuntu Budgie 17.10 [link] [comments] |
why does dd, when writing using "status=progress", shows 2 values of bytes Posted: 17 Apr 2018 11:35 AM PDT debian=sid kernel=4.15.0-2 while i am writing zeroes to my hard drive to clean it using INPUT dd shows this why are there two GB values in "(6.3 GB, 5.9 GiB)"? Shouldn't it be only 1? [link] [comments] |

Very slow boot. Partition related? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 04:53 AM PDT Hey there, I've been playing around with archlinux on my macbook pro retina 2015. After i lost my mind trying to install everything correctly, i decided to delete all partitions and install ubuntu mate 17.10. Since the first boot, i find it unusually slow. I even tried another distro (linux mint) , and its the same! its an SSD, so no way can it be this slow. I consider myself a noob in linux, because i lack the knowledge to correctly troubleshoot a system, so im hoping if someone can shed me some light here. Additional info: i created partitions from the scratch because of archlinux. when i installed ubuntu, i used the "use all disk" thing... so it took care of the partitions for me. Is there any chance it missed something there? i'm considering to reinstall MACOS and come back to linux again....but man, thats some serious work there :( [link] [comments] |
[META] Can the Mods create a damn sticky? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 01:53 PM PDT This has been brought up before, and I see this almost daily here. KALI LINUX IS NOT A BEGINNER FRIENDLY DISTRO! UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU EVER EVER EVER INSTALL KALI LINUX! KALI LINUX IS BUILT FOR 1 REASON, AND 1 REASON ONLY: FOR PENETRATION TESTING OF NETWORKS AND SECURITY! FOR THE LOVE OF WHATEVER, FUCKING USE UBUNTU, LINUX MINT, OR ANOTHER DAMN DISTRO! It is not rocket science people. Mods, please make a sticky with this info. Make it visible as fuck. Lightweight district that's good for programming? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 03:58 AM PDT I'm looking for a good lightweight Linux distro that will run well on an Asus X202E with 4GB RAM and an Intel Celeron. I'm also a computer science student and I have a main laptop that I use for school so I'd just like to put a lightweight system on this laptop because it isn't being used for anything. Thanks for any suggestions. [link] [comments] |
Your experience with Asus E402sa Posted: 17 Apr 2018 09:40 AM PDT Hello Reddit. As the title writes I've been searching the internet for people who successfully installed a Linux distribution on an Asus E402SA, it has very low specs (2GB ram, practically no storage and an CPU none heard off) and was original brought for web browsing (Which it does fine) However I just started an education and wanted to have a laptop I could take back and forth maybe be some programming on in the train, because of the low-end spec I want to try Lubuntu. First thought was to buy a Thinkpad (Which I am still very much thinking on, but money is an Issue at the moment) so if I use the "Try Lubuntu without installing" and it works, does that guarantee that it will work if I wipe out Windows and install Lubuntu? Second since google have failed me, and Ubuntu compatible hardware have zero Asus models. Do anyone of your have experience with Asus machines? Mostly the E402S series would be great. Best regards. Issues settings up JDK/JRE in Linux? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:38 PM PDT For a project in my class we have to use JavaFX to create a GUI based application. One of the big issues I've encountered though is that the java compiler on my Linux machine does not seem to recognize any JavaFX as valid. I believe this is because my compiler version does not support JavaFX natively as I believe it is an older version (Maybe even OpenJDK). I'm trying to figure out how I could remove this version of the JDK and install a new one, as the oracle site only gives me a folder with files in it, but not useful instructions on how to setup the JDK itself and its global variables etc. How could I uninstall my current Java compiler and replace it with a new one? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 08:52 AM PDT Greetings, Quick question I have a python program that runs in the background and let's say count's from 1 to N, the results are written in a log file. My question is how can I write a shortcut to call the last 5 lines when I enter BOT-test in the terminal. I can use "head-5 my-file" but I don't know how to save it under BOT-test. Best regards [link] [comments] |
How to build a live purpose-built Linux ISO? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:36 PM PDT I've come across ISOs running minimal versions of Linux that when booted will run as dictated in /etc/rc.d/ I'd like to know how to make my own Linux ISOs that do this. I've read about Respin and Systemback, but I'd like to know if someone has done anything like this before. [link] [comments] |
Where to start for developing on Linux ? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:19 PM PDT Hello ! I would like to gradually stop using Windows and move completely to Linux for pretty much everything I do (consume media and code basically). I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations on what Linux distro is best for learning to use command lines and coding ? By coding I mean to learn Linux Kernel development. Also maybe if anyone knows of any guides/blogs that can guide me, that would be awesome ! I have dual booted before with Ubuntu and Fedora (had compatibility issues with Fedora though). Extra info: I currently use a mid 2017 HP OMEN laptop (i7-7700HQ with GTX 1050ti), I would be dual booting (initially). Thanks for all the help ! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Apr 2018 02:18 PM PDT I want to have a good grasp over the basic commands like grep, cut, sed, sort (and the ones I don't know of). What would be a good resource for this? [link] [comments] |
Changing Multiple Files Extensions within the same Directory Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:02 PM PDT I was hoping to change a number of file extensions (~30) from .txt to .asc These are all stored within the same folder, and none will contain txt in the names. Because of the number of files, and the possibility this process may need repeated in future so I'd prefer not do it manually, especially if there is a more efficient way to do it - can anyone suggest a handy command for making the change? Linux Mint changed my password, I can't fix it, is there a better distro I should use Posted: 17 Apr 2018 11:18 AM PDT I have Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon installed on a PC. Everything was fine for about 9 months after I installed it, until it suddenly changed my password. I didn't change the password myself. I can't find out what the new password is. I've tried several different ideas found online and in the Linux Mint forum, none of them work. I've been trying to solve the problem for a week, going to Advanced Options, GRUB, etc. I haven't been able to find an answer that works. The 'passwd' command doesn't work at all. ls/home username works, but not passwd. I guess it's time to give up and reinstall the OS. I initially decided on Linux Mint because I read that it was one of the more user-friendly distros. But I'm not finding that to be the case. Is there a simpler distro I could use? One that doesn't change your password on you, or at least makes it possible to solve the problem if it occurs. [link] [comments] |
Need help to make a simple Shell script. Posted: 17 Apr 2018 11:04 AM PDT Hey Guys, I always wanted the sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade to happen automatically everytime I startup. How can I make this possible? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Should I switch to Arch Linux? If so, then when? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 10:27 AM PDT I'm using Linux for two months. I've tried several distros, as Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Solus, ElementaryOS, Manjaro, Antergos, openSUSE. So, I could say I'm a distro-hopper. At this moment, I'm sticking with Solus. But, don't get me wrong. I want to stop distro-hopping! I've managed to install Arch for many times in a VM. However, I don't know if I'm prepared enough. I love the command line, but I don't master it. I know how to navigate files and folders, how to update and download things, basic stuff. However, I'm open to learn. I do really like rolling-release distros. I need newer drivers for my GPU (GTX 1050Ti) and I prefer to have up-to-date software. I don't like bloated distros, because most of the times I don't need all stuff that was preinstalled. I prefer a minimalistic distro. Also, I want to learn more how my computer works, how Linux works, how things are linked and do a certain thing and so on. I'm enthusiastic about Computer Science. Is Arch for me? Should I switch to Arch Linux on my machine? If so, then...when? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Centos/rhel7 - How should I set up tiger-vnc for a lot of users? Posted: 17 Apr 2018 01:55 AM PDT I have a lot of users that access a server and I'm wondering what would be the best way to set up tiger-vnc? Following tutorials, they go up to two users and I would just keep copying and pasting the files to have vnc sessions for each extra user. I feel like this creates a lot of overhead if there are different users accessing the machine because I have to keep adding a new setup for a new user. How do I have less overhead if I follow this? If I leave it as default, the user can just run "vncserver" and have it up on their own to connect without needing overhead. However, sometimes these users forget or don't close their vncserver sessions correctly using -kill or -autokill and they end up opening up multiple vnc sessions and leaving the old ones sitting idle. I can look up using ps -ef | grep vnc but I don't know how to tell if it's sitting idle or if the user actually is using or needing two different vnc sessions. How can I tell if a vnc session is idle if I do this method? I think I can add a timeout the Xvnc but I'm not sure if it kills the vncserver rather than just ending the connection. Any recommendations? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
GOM Player on ubuntu 16.04 LTS Posted: 17 Apr 2018 08:36 AM PDT Is there any way to use GOM player in ubuntu? I really like the hotkeys and some other features I just can't find on VLC or other players.. Any help would be really appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Can't get to Windows, even tho I dual boot Fedora and Windows 10 Posted: 17 Apr 2018 07:31 AM PDT So I tried to dual boot with Mint and everything went great except that I needed to change bios to boo from uefi (if I wanted windows) or legacy (if I wanted Mint). Now I installed Fedora 27 instead of Mint and can't get to have a choice in choosing Windows anywhere. I think there is a problem with my boot loader but I don't know how to fix that. sftp - fatal: bad ownership or modes for chroot directory Posted: 17 Apr 2018 03:39 AM PDT I'm trying to setup an sftp server and I want to be able to place the user in a specific unique directory, based on their username, without using /home. If the ChrootDirectory is set to /data/ftp/pub, the solution works fine but the user lands in the pub directory and can see all child directories. They can't access them, but I don't want them to be able to even see them. If I set ChrootDirectory to /data/ftp/pub/%u I get the following in /var/log/secure: So it looks like it's trying to place the user in the right directory, but there is some kind of permissions problem? Here is the relevant section of my sshd_config: And here is the output of ls -l -R /data Let me know if more information is needed [link] [comments] |
Hide usb device from process. (With nspawn?) Posted: 17 Apr 2018 07:21 AM PDT Is it possible to start a process/service and hide several USB devices (not all) from that particular process and keep everything else the same. Is that possible with systemd-nspawn? So far i only found tutorials for full blown containers with totally separate OS trees. The process only needs to write it some dir to store its config files and reading and writing to / from USB. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
GPU idling at ~45/50C, hot palm rest Posted: 17 Apr 2018 01:12 AM PDT After installing Ubuntu 18.04, I'm now using my integrated Intel as my VGA adapter and my 940M as 3d adapter. ```
The problem is that my laptop gets really hot, the idle GPU temp is around 45-50 °C. This is a big issue since my palm rest gets really hot. Any ideas on how to reduce the temperature or how I can disable the GPU entirely? [link] [comments] |
