New gaming laptop Features NVMe SSD with 2 lanes of PCIe Gen. 3.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 07:53 AM PDT

So I am considering the upcoming Asus ROG Hero Edition 15.6" with the 8th Gen. Core i7 8750H with a 1050 ti, 16gbs of memory, 128GB NVMe SSD boot drive and 1TB FireCuda SSHD. And I noticed in the product specifications that the 128GB SSD variant uses only 2 PCIe Gen. 3 lanes whereas the 256GB variant uses 4 lanes. This was rather unusual as also according to the product page, the laptop using 7th generation CPUs has all NVMe SSDs variants assigned with 4 lanes. I'm curious as to how much this will affect the SSD's performance having only 2 lanes being assigned compared to 4, noting that I do not consider this as deal breaker as I intend to store most files and applications (especially games) on the FireCuda.

    How important are screen nits?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 07:10 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I had a quick question regarding screen brightness levels and nit comparisons, since with the new 8th gen gaming laptops coming out there is steep competitions going around. I already purchased the new Aero 15x, but I noticed that the screen nit level resides at 266, compared to the average of 280+ with the XPS, Zephyrus and Stealth.

Is there a big difference between 10-20 nits in such a scenario? My current laptop is 217 nits and in certain situations things can get dark. I'd appreciate any info/tips on this. Thank you!

What's a good laptop for WoW and engineering?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 10:31 AM PDT

I don't know much about laptops and I've searching for one for college. I'd also like to be able to possibly play WoW on it. What are some good suggestions and what should I be looking for?

    3ms vs. 7ms

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 02:01 PM PDT

I'm trying to decide between the Gigabyte Aero 15x and Asus ROG Zephyrus GM501GS. I was set on the 15x until I discovered that the Zephyrus has a 3ms response time, 4ms lower than the 15x. I'm coming from a 1ms monitor, so is it worth it to get the Zephyrus because the response time is lower?

How to organize files if laptop has both SSD and HDD?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 10:08 AM PDT

So all the laptops I've had previously have either exclusively had HDDs or SSDs only. The one I'm planning on getting soon has both (128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD). I want to make sure I make the most of my space here. I was wondering if the following use of space is good? Also, how much more useful is a 256 GB SSD over a 128 GB SSD? I know Windows is gonna take up 30 GB SSD space so really I'll have only about 98 GB SSD if I get the 128 GB SSD model.

    • Windows: Obviously this goes to the SSD. Again, Windows takes up 30 GB easy so my SSD would only have 98 GB (or 226 GB).

    • Steam Games: I'm guessing these goes into the HDD? The games I download range from 15 GB - 60 GB so the SSD will be filled up in no time, even if I only have 1 game saved on the SSD at a time. Besides the initial loading during booting up the game, will load times and stuff in-game be slower if the game is saved on HDD as opposed to an SSD?

    • Work documents: These go to SSD. I would love to have my Word docs, PowerPoints, etc. come up ASAP.

    • Music/Pictures/Videos: HDD. I doubt I'll ever need to open them often.

Also, how do you define where you want to save these things (into SSD or HDD)? Again, would a 256 GB SSD be worth it over a 128 GB SSD? What else would you say goes to SSD over the HDD? Thanks!

EDIT: I don't know where I would want to download coding programs like Eclipse, Pycharm, Code::Blocks, etc. I do code fairly often, but I am willing to wait a longer boot up time as long as the actual computation time remains the same on either SSD or HDD (which I think it should, but not too sure). Android Studio and Microsoft Visual Studio in particular takes up a lot of space!

HP Probook 4540s, Not sure if the air vent is blocked or not.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:29 PM PDT

A while ago the laptop fan seemed to stop working. It would work sometimes, and sometimes it won't, and sometimes won't work on booting the laptop and work after some time. I decided to disassemble the laptop and found out that one of the vents on the bottom seems to be blocked. https://imgur.com/a/9dDPb I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to be or not.

Lenovo Legion Y520 vs Dell Inspiron 15 7567?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:10 PM PDT

Hi all, so I was looking to pick up a new laptop mostly for CAD, some gaming and occasional graphics work and I narrowed down my choices between the Lenovo Legion Y520 and Dell Inspiron 15 7567 but I'm having trouble making a decision between the two.

    Lenovo Dell
    749.99 777.00
    https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/lenovo-legion-y-series-laptops/Legion-Y520/p/88GMY500808 https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-15-7567-Laptop/dp/B07793DRK9
    Core™ i7-7700HQ Core i5-7300HQ
    Radeon RX 560 4GB GTX 1050Ti
    8.0GB DDR4 8GB DDR4
15.6" FHD IPS 15.6inch Full HD
    1TB HDD + 128GB SSD 256GB SSD

Basically the Lenovo has a better screen and a better CPU while the Dell has a better GPU and a larger SSD. Any thoughts? Anything I've missed? Thanks!

Is extended Warranty on a laptop worth it? (Acer Canada)

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:01 PM PDT

Just purchased the Acer Nitro Spin 5. This is the first laptop I've ever purchased over $800, so I plan to be extra cautious with it, and want to make sure it lasts me a while.

I have 1 year limited warranty. I'm wondering If It would be worth it to purchase their extended warranty with accidental damage protection ($130 for 2 years, $180 for 3)

I just don't want to worry about me not being covered when It actually comes down to a problem. Anyone have experience with Acer Warranty?

I'm wondering about if they would cover:

The internal battery dying. Wondering If I could send it to them to replace.

Touchscreen not working, or obviously just anything not working.

Parts needing replacement, like maybe a keyboard key falling off, the hinges breaking (It's a 2 in 1 so I see this as a real possibility).

If I drop the laptop and crack it lets say, would that be covered? What exactly is usually covered under accidental damage?

    Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

What case should I get for my laptop?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:26 AM PDT

I just recently bought an HP Elitebook 2760p. It's not a particularly new computer, nevertheless it functions as I want it to and I'm able to do what I want to on it -- so I'm happy.

My question is: what case should I get for this laptop of mine if I want to keep it safe within a bookbag that might get tossed around a little bit? This is a new laptop for me and I really don't want it broken -- not only do I not want to lose the files but I just don't want to lose the device -- it's a wonderful laptop for it's price.

SO IM WONDERING... Are there laptop cases that HP advises Elitebook 2760p to get? Should I get one specifically for a 2-and-1 laptop (which my laptop is)? Do the technicalities not matter, do I just need to ensure that I get a case with the right dimensions?

What case do you guys suggest I get considering that I have an HP Elitebook 2760p, and that the laptop may unintentionally get thrashed around a bit in my bookbag due to me just going about my daily activities (I ride a bike everywhere, and also store my bookbag in various places throughout the day (school/work/gym)).

All helpful advice is appreciated. :)

P.S. Since I'm not asking for suggestions on a laptop, but rather on a laptop case -- I didn't use the form.

Struggling on deciding what to purchase to replace my old laptop.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 11:39 AM PDT

I purchased a laptop in 2011, an HP 2000-219DX. To be honest I am not a computer expert so the specs I found online are as follows: Microprocessor: 1.6 GHz VISION E2 Technology from AMD with AMD Dual-Core Processor E-350 Microprocessor Cache: 1MB L2 Cache Memory: 3GB DDR3 System Memory (2 DIMM) Memory: Max 8GB Video Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6310M Discrete-Class Graphics with up to 1461 MB total graphics memory Hard Drive: 320GB (5400RPM)

Main issue right now is it is running super slow, and always has to be plugged into use. Swapped batteries a few times and it will work for a while and then die.

Most my day to day functions can be done on my iPad or work laptop, so I won't be using it daily or very often during the week. I would use it for getting photos from camera and phone to hard drive, light photo editing, working with retropie, managing iTunes, light word processing, son using for homework here and there.

I am not sure if I get something cheap in the $300-$500 range, or jump up for something capable of doing more and lasting.

Urgently Need help with choosing a college laptop

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 10:35 AM PDT

    Hi there,

So, today, my family is planning to buy a laptop for me as we go to a foreign country where we expect the prices to be low. It would be immensely helpful if someone could reply me soon.

    Some of my crietrias:

    • I want a laptop only for college stuff, and I will probably not be playing any game at all. I am considering to major in Economics, so I might use a ton of Word, Excel, and maybe some math programs. Not a lot of graphics probably.

    • The first every category for me is the absolute lack of any LAG. I freaking HATE LAG. My previous two computers were very low and mid- end and lagged All the time when I was doing web surfing and even word docs. So, for my new laptop at the college I cannot afford any lags at all. I just want smooth web and doc performance for research.

    • starting speed I want my laptop to load and boot up fast.

    • Battery life

    • price range. I guess I can afford 1000-1200 range but not any more.

    • Portability is important as well

Currently, my best bet is a Macbook Air because of its price and versatility (also, bcs I am very biased against Windows because of its stupid updates and annoying lags after a certain period of use). I am really bothered to make the MAXIMUM of the money I am going to pay. I am considering to use the laptop for 4+ years or so.

Aspire E15 VS HP Pavilion 15

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 09:19 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm currently looking for a laptop for college. Just really light gaming when I'm in campus and something to finish up assignments on. I'm kinda torn between the Aspire E15 E5-576G and the HP Pavilion 15-CK063TX. They share the same specs and they're about the same price here (Malaysia).

I'm wondering if anyone has any experiences with either laptop? Battery life, build quality etc. Essentially I'm looking for something lightweight with a good battery life. The Dell XPS 13/15 are out of question as its way too overpriced in Malaysia

Hello guys I own a Lenovo y50-70 and about 3 days ago i was using it when I realized it wasn't charging so I thought it was a faulty charger so i got a new charger but it still wasn't charging so I decided to take it to my local repairer who informed me that something on the motherboard called the IC's have been completely burnt and the only option now is to buy a new motherboard( which is pretty expensive and impossible to come buy in these parts)..All suggestions are welcome

Dell Inspiron 15 5577 or Lenovo Ideapad 720-15

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 02:52 AM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop under 3500 Polish zlotys (which would roughly convert to $1000), mostly for Android software development. I don't care much about gaming-related parameters and would probably trade battery life and color reproduction for good performance. Also SSD is a must. I've narrowed down the choice to these two laptops and I'm wondering which one will be better.

i5 or i7 for my college laptop?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 08:39 AM PDT

Hello r/laptops. I'll be starting my freshman year of chemical engineering this fall and will be needing a new laptop (my chromebook won't cut it). Currently, I am looking at the dell XPS 13 (9370) but can decide which processor to get. I've heard from many reviews that the i5 8250u is almost identical to the i7 8550u. I would prefer to save $200 and stick with the i5, but I'm worried this decision will later come back to bite me. The current configuration I'm looking at is 16gb of ram, 256gb ssd (I have external 500gb ssd), and 1080 screen. The University I'm heading to will have powerful computers if I will ever need them to complete a project. To sum it up, should I stick with the i5 or splurge on the i7?

LG Gram 2018 (Z980) SSD Upgradability

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 08:16 AM PDT

Does anyone know if the LG Gram (Z980 models) supports PCI-E NVME m.2 SSDs? I know it's currently a SATA SSD, but I want to upgrade it to an NVME, but I don't know if it supports it. I couldn't find any information on it. I don't suppose anyone knows if I can upgrade to a NVME SSD.

Laptop recommendation - work and play

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 03:52 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am seeking a laptop that has decent specs for a balance between school work and gaming. I want it to be able to run current games pretty well (like PUBG etc) with a decent frame rate and not drill a hole in my pocket. Something with good graphics, good ram, GOOD battery life etc - nothing above $2000.

    Thanks :)

Cooling pad for laptop that has airflow in the back/bottom of the screen)?

Will I experience additional latency if I connect multiple USB 2.0 devices to a USB-C hub?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:37 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm a musician and I do a lot of music production and live performance, so latency is a big deal for me.

I'm currently looking at some new laptops and the one that I'm looking at doesn't have any USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports. Most of my gear uses USB 2.0, like my audio interfaces, midi controllers. Also some of my synthesizers use midi over usb, so minimizing latency is a pretty big deal to me.

The laptop that I'm looking at is has two USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports. I'm thinking of finding a powered USB hub that will allow me to connect multiple (5-6) usb 2.0 devices into each of the USB-C 3.1 gen 2 ports.

Will I be experiencing increased latency because of this? Do powered USB hubs have any latency of their own, and is there any conversion between USB 2.0 and the USB-C port which would cause latency?

Is the Google Pixelbook worth it, at a discounted price?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 09:46 PM PDT

I have the opportunity to get a new Google Pixelbook for about $1000, which is the 8GB + 256GB SSD, which is about $300 off the regular price. I also need a new laptop to be productive. Basically, I'll need to use the Chrome OS equivalents of Word, PowerPoint, etc. and I'll be coding and running Java, C, Python programs. Given this, is the Pixelbook worth it for this at this price? I'm looking for a good battery life too, so that's important in my decision.

    The pen is included too.
