EDIT: I do want to say that I don't plan on doing a lot of gaming since I already have a desktop PC for that. The only time I would use it for gaming is if I'm away or if a friend visits. So in all honesty, I value other qualities like battery and CPU more than GPU power. [link] [comments] |
Death match: Razer blade 14 (2018) vs MSI GS65 vs ROG GM501 vs Aero 15X vs XPS 15 (2018) Posted: 29 Apr 2018 04:32 PM PDT I'm currently using GS43 14'' phantom pro (bought 2 years ago) and want to treat myself by replacing it with something that feels a bit better (+ maybe more powerful, but not necessarily because my current one is a beast and can handle any game out there). I am currently considering the list above. The questionnaire is below, but here are my random thoughts. I know that the new XPS 15 is not as powerful as the others, but after my experience with the msi and yoga 2 before it, I want something:
Overall, I need a good-looking portable laptop that I would be able to use in ~3 years from now (that wouldn't become obsolete by then, and would be as sturdy as when I bought it, so that I won';t need to worry about it falling apart while carrying it around) Currently, I'm driven away from:
So, then, the short-list is 15X vs 9570, but I'm very open to suggestions. Even though 15X has better specs, I am very-very-tiny-bit inclined towards 9570, because:
However, as I said before, I am very open to suggestions/comments. Questionnaire:
On a side note, the dark side inside of me sometimes urges me to send all that to screw itself and go for the new matebook x pro or surface laptop (if it comes out soon enough) with tb3 (for eGPU) and give up on cpu&gpu for the sake of better design and build quality. [link] [comments] |
Display and durability? Normal or gaming laptop? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:18 AM PDT I'm looking for a laptop with a good display (1080p IPS and good colors), and that is durable. I want it to last at least 3 years without going slow and breaking. That being said, I'm not sure weather to get a regular laptop or a gaming laptop. The options I'm looking at are: ASUS VIVOBOOK S15 S510UN: i7-8550U MX 150 256gb SSD HP Pavilion 15: i7-8550U MX 150 256gb SSD Omen 15 ce000: 7300HQ Gt 1050 256gb SSD Lenovo Y520 151 IKB: 7300HQ Gt 1050TI 256gb SSD Gigabyte Sabre 15-G: 7300HQ Gt 1050 256gb SSD + 1 TB HDD Which would be the most reasonable option here? In terms of durability and display. I will do some gaming as well, but my main gaming rig will be my desktop. And I won't be carrying it much, when I do I will be using a car and backpack. Thanks in advance for any help. [link] [comments] |

I need a laptop cooler pad for my Razer Blade Pro. Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:05 PM PDT Hey all. I just recently got the Razer Blade Pro and I'm fairly new to the whole gaming on a laptop scene. I know this thing is a beast and that I probably shouldn't be worried about it overheating but I would really like a nice laptop cooler pad with fans. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on any specific one to get, as well as which ones to stay away from. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Programming, Light gaming under 600 Posted: 29 Apr 2018 02:49 PM PDT My last laptop was a thinkpad 17 inch, I need something I can actually carry in a backpack comfortably :). I really like the look of the dell xps 13 but the 700$ version only has an i3. I need something with 250gb ssd+ and compatible with Linux (not really an issue these days). TL;DR
Thanks for reading! Used is ok too

Laptop for photo editing/annotating Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:04 AM PDT Need some help deciding between the Dell XPS 13 9370 vs Lenovo Yoga 920. Budget is not an issue as being bought with company funds so anything under $3k is reasonable. Gonna be using this mostly to do heavy image editing and annotating so using a stylus pen would be nice but not a must if other features make the Dell a better laptop. Need 4K resolution so going to be looking at the highest end versions of both. The Dell XPS 13 4k is said to have a touch display but have not seen any reviews talking about using it with a stylus pen and what kind of utility that touchscreen has for annotating, so would be great to know if anyone has tried it out. Specs are below: Dell XPS 13 (9370) - 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8550U Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.0 GHz) - 16GB LPDDR3 2133MHz - Windows 10 Pro - 1 TB SSD - 13.3'' 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge touch display - Intel UHD Graphics 620 Lenovo Yoga 920 - Intel Core i7-8550U Processor (1.8Ghz, 8MB) - 16G DDR4 2400 Onboard - Windows 10 Pro - 1 TB SSD - 13.9" UHD (3840x2160), IPS, Multi-Touch - Integrated Intel HD Graphics Comments on speed, durability, and additional functionality would be appreciated. Price wise the Lenovo is coming out to be cheaper but mainly because the Dell warranty is so expensive. I was also considering the XPS 2-in-1 but seems like would need to do the new XPS 15 2-in-1 to get a 4K display on but it is a little larger than I would like for portability, and I also don't quite understand how different the processing power and graphics card are in it (Core i7-8705G Processor and i7-8705G Processor). If this is a significant upgrade from either the XPS 13 or Yoga 920 then I am willing to consider it as well in a similarly equipped version. I do not have any gaming needs so that is not a factor for me at all. Main uses will be for work/productivity, intense photo editing/annotating, and occasional movies/video watching. Just bought my first laptop for older games I want suggestions and tips Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:58 PM PDT So I just bought a laptop it's on its way in the mail and I'll be mostly using it for older games like brutal Legend and left for dead here is the laptop I bought https://m.costco.com/Dell-Inspiron-15-7000-Series-Gaming-Laptop---Intel-Core-i5---6GB-NVIDIA-Graphics---1080p.product.100397555.html I just want to know what range this PC is and how much I can get out of it I asked around and people said it was good for the price would say I wanted to put older games like the ones listed above to the max would I be able to do that and what games can I run on this that are new And is there anything I need to set up when the PC arrives or do I just download Steam and get to playing thank you for all the help you have provided so far Also is it on par with that ps4 pro I keep hearing about? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:32 AM PDT Hi so I'm thinking about buying a laptop for college in the states. I've been working for a few months and have 3000 USD in my bank account (I know its not a lot), but I can only spend about 1000 since I have to use the rest of it on food and rent and stuff. Its always been my dream to have those cool laptops you can play games with friends. Like is there any good laptop that I can play starcraft 2 on with out lagging/glitching?(because thats the highest game i know) thats my only requirement. it doesn't have to be light or have a good batterylife. Is the New (2018) XPS 15 worth waiting for and not getting the current one for $400 off? Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:31 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: USA - $2000 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs, no 2 in 1's. How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, below 5lb definitely Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. About 15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming, and a lot of statistical programming (R/Python) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly just Rocket League Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard would be great, but not required. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So I think I am torn between the SB2 or the Dell XPS 15. The SB2 is just so expensive so I think I will pass on it. With the XPS I know the new one is coming in less than a month. But the old model (2017) is on sale right now for $400 off. So is it worth waiting and paying more for the new i7's? I have read mixed things about them. Thanks for the help everyone! [USA] Cheapest laptop that can play Halo Wars 2 Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:22 PM PDT I'm looking for the bare minimum in terms of price/performance that can play Halo Wars 2. Screen size is not important. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:02 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'm looking for a good general-purpose laptop. I don't have many requirements or deal-breakers, so this should be an easy one for you guys! In order, my priorities are:
Other than that I'm really not picky! I certainly don't need any fancy frills; I just need to be able to browse the web and do basic reading & writing, since this is 90% of what my job entails. Some kind of bluetooth / wireless connectivity to peripherals like speakers, etc. would be a bonus, but is far from necessary. Thanks in advance for your advice! Total budget and country of purchase: $800-$1,100; Canada (Could go slightly higher on the price point if necessary, but prefer to stick to this range if possible). Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I rarely work anywhere where I don't have access to an outlet, so raw specs are a definite priority over battery life. No urgent need for an alternative form, as I've only ever owned traditional laptops and am used to using them. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a concern. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Definitely Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger is generally better for me, I think -- but I'm flexible on this. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not a gamer at all, so no need for anything graphically fancy. I do produce music from time to time, but I have an external sound card for that so I don't need anything special built into the laptop itself. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability and longevity are definitely among my highest priorities! However, I am quite gentle with my devices and not particularly accident-prone; so when I talk about longevity I don't mean physical resilience (aluminum casing, etc.) so much as I mean that the manufacturing standards are high enough that I won't have to worry about being plagued by hardware defects and the like. (My last two laptops have been Toshibas, which lasted me 6 and 8 years respectively before suffering from any hardware problems whatsoever; so that's the kind of longevity I'd like to shoot for.) Hard Drive: Strongly prefer an SSD! It doesn't need to be particularly high-capacity, as I have a very large external HD that I use for long-term storage; for me the main thing is access speed during ordinary daily use. Keyboard: Prefer a full one with a numpad & etc. Doesn't need to be backlit or anything else fancy. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. (see intro) Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Best 2 in 1 for photo/video/audio editing on the market? Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:59 PM PDT I had my mind set on the new XPS 15 2in1 for some months now, and was just waiting the release but now with all the bad reviews I've seen I'm surelly rethinking it. So that being said, which one would be the best to buy now or in a few months? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a new laptop after my 2011 MBP took its last breath Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:55 PM PDT I loved my MB Pro. It did everything I asked of it, except finally the logic board crapped out and the cost of replacing it just wasn't worth it since it would still need a few hardware upgrades before even being a competitive resell. Anyway, now I'm in the market for a replacement. I'm very used to macOS, but I think its time to go with a windows 10 machine. Total budget and country of purchase: No more than 1700 USD or so, preferably; USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I definitely want to go for a 2-in-1; I really would like to move away from the mountains of notebooks and pens I've been accumulating from school, but still want the traditional laptop feel when I'm not writing on it. However, I want to go as powerful as I can. How important is weight and thinness to you? As light and thin as possible without compromising performance Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15. I'm used to 15, but I'm worried about the agility/awkwardness in handling the flipping of the screen, but maybe I'm just making a fuss about nothing (PLEASE feel free to share personal experiences with any suggested products). Flipping around the 15 inchers on display at best buy felt a tad cumbersome. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. For the most part, it'll be a day to day regular computer, but I work in a field where I would like the capability to throw together an idea in CAD software (Solidworks specifically) if possible; so Quadro or Radeon Pro dGPU would be a huuuuge plus. Also possibly some MATLAB. NOT gaming on this machine. Other than that, Chrome, Netflix, MS Office. Possibly LTSpice and various IDEs (trying to learn hardware and software design on my own) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely want to focus on build quality as I want the machine to last. For creature comforts, I'm looking for a res greater than 1080p (not necessarily 4k; probably 1440p if available), at least a quad core Intel processor (preferably 8th gen i7), a decent pen and general feel for the writing portion of my use case. Must also be a good laptop. Nothing too topheavy (so preferably not detachable), so not really interested in the Surface Book. I've used them and I'm just not really a fan. Also, preferably at least 500GB SSD storage (more is definitely better since CAD files can get quite large) and >8GB RAM. Also preferably high on upgradeability. Again, I want this to last. So if, down the road I need to upgrade the storage or RAM or battery, it'd be nice, or if something goes wrong, I'd like it to actually be able to be fixable (unless its some catastrophic failure of course). I've heard that the Surface Book is horrid in this category. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I know, my criteria seems super specific and I should just filter those on a site like Amazon or Newegg. I've been looking all over the web for mention of any 2-in-1 workstations, and so far I've found two, newly announced: Dell Precision 5530 and HP ZBook Studio x360. While these haven't yet been released, if you're familiar with the product line of either in general please share your thoughts. As far as graphics, I really want to steer clear of gaming-geared gpus. If its a geforce or radeon (non-pro), I'd rather just get a cheaper version without the dGPU. In general, I think I'm leaning towards waiting for reviews on the Dell mentioned above. But there might be other products I don't know about, or criteria I've mentioned that doesn't matter, or criteria I didn't mention that I should consider, or maybe things I want that are just downright unfeasible. Overall, I would like the most professional level power I can get without compromising too much on portability and general "laptopiness". I'd like to lazy around on my couch with the computer on my lap as normal and be able to flip it around to do some handwritten work and then flip it around again and open up my CAD program and fiddle with the prototype. But maybe that's a pipe dream. Again, any and all personal experience is welcome. Thank you. TL;DR Outline of my requirements: * 2-in-1 * Built for a long life * Pen is a must so would prefer a good one * As thin and light as possible * 13-15" screen size * 1440 or better resolution * 8th gen i7 * If possible, professional grade GPU, but not a dealbreaker (but no gaming-oriented GPU; if pro not possible then integrated GPU is fine; would rather not pay extra for hardware that won't be utilized) [link] [comments] |
Need Help! What Gaming Laptop Should I Get? Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:17 PM PDT I'm about to buy a laptop, but I don't know which one! [USA] Laptop for CS major ($1000-$1400) Posted: 29 Apr 2018 09:11 PM PDT
$1000-$1400 in the U.S.
Specs > battery > 2 in 1
Important, need to carry it around often for college
Any except Chrome
13"-15"
Light gaming
Good keyboard is important. Touch screen would be nice but not necessary.
I want to have a high performance laptop that will last me at least through college (I'm currently a HS senior). Also, I'm not sure what the best size laptop would be for me so any suggestions on that would be awesome. If you guys could let me know what the best time to buy the laptop would be in order to save the most money, that would help a lot too. [link] [comments] |

Budget Gaming Laptop to Share with Wife Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:30 PM PDT I'd like to buy a laptop to share with my wife. I do some relatively simple gaming and she only requires it for basic purposes (email, internet, Microsoft Office, etc.). Total budget and country of purchase: I can spend up to $1000 but I hope I don't have to. I'd like to get something under $800 if it meets the criteria below. USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money is most important. I'd like decent battery performance, but it doesn't have to be top of the line. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, but I don't want a monster. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Approximately 14 inches, but flexible. It's important that it doesn't "look like a gaming computer" so my wife can take it to work if needed. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming: See below. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Europa Universalis IV, Cities: Skylines, Civ 5 (but hoping to upgrade to Civ 6 with a new laptop). I don't care too much about high settings or FPS since almost all of my gaming is strategy/turn based. I'm more concerned about the speed of gameplay (i.e. not slowing down or taking too long between turns). Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't think so. I'm hoping to buy a machine that will last us at least 3 years. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for your help! I'm upgrading from a potato that struggled to run my games on low settings, so I'm excited not to have to wait a minute between each Civ 5 turn... I've generally been pleased with Lenovo in the past, but I don't know if they'll have the best deal for what I'm looking for. Please let me know if I can answer any further questions. Need help decidingbetween Macbook and Lenovo, using college grant Posted: 29 Apr 2018 03:14 PM PDT Hey guys, I received a grant of $1k USD from the university I'll be attending next year that can only be used for a computer. I've narrowed it down to two options, the Macbook Pro 13" with the Touchbar and a 6th gen Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon. The Mac would cost about $700 (apple tax I guess) more, but I'm considering it for it's build quality, MacOS, it's interconnectedness with iOS,and simply because of its aesthetic. The Carbon has better specs overall and seems like a solid machine, it's just that I've used windows all my life and was wondering if a change might be in order. Computer specs: https://imgur.com/a/QtIYBGO Pros and cons of each? I'm not really sure what to do. Thanks!! Edit: I can't change specs or features on either of these in order to lower the price, they come as is (specwise) from the university shop. [link] [comments] |
