Posted: 14 Apr 2018 10:53 AM PDT Hello, just a quick question about what type of setup I should go for. I need internet for a 2500 square foot house. 3 floors basement, ground I'm pretty sure I have a patch panel etc and have Ethernet ports in about atleast 3-4 rooms. My question is this, I get internet from Rogers here in Canada so they will come in and bring me those modem router combos. Now that has trash range so I will likely put it in bridge mode and run my own router(s). I need wired in at least 2-3 rooms in addition to solid wifi. What would be a good recommendation in terms of equipment? Ideally I'd like to stay under $600. My internet is 1gb down can't remember upload. [link] [comments] |
How can I make a server connect to my pc, keep the server off the WAN, but keep my pc on the WAN? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:50 PM PDT I have my WAN cable in port 15, PC cable in 14, and server in 1. VLAN and trunking doesn't allow me to have 2 sets with the same port. So how could I do this? [link] [comments] |
Should I keep running DHCP at my modem/router device? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:37 PM PDT So I own a TP Link Arcer VR600 Modem/Router that runs as an all purpose machine at my house. At the same time, I am running pihole in a dedicated machine as a DNS based adblock that serves as the main DNS server for my network. PiHole can also act as an DHCP server. Should I use pihole as DHCP in order to release more resources from my modem/router or there will be no difference at all? As far as I can understand, DHCP is a heavy resource process [link] [comments] |
Extremely high channel utilisation - Unsure of the source Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:37 PM PDT So this is extremely weird, and I have absolutely no idea what to do about it. I live with my family in a detached house. Neighbours on either side, but we rarely ever see their networks. For all intents and purposes, the airspace where we live is clear. We got an AP-AC-Lite over christmas, and I set it all up. I'm aware of what I'm doing, and had a shared SSID on both 2.4 and 5. Did a channel scan, channel 11 was the clearest though they were all pretty much empty. Everything worked absolutely perfectly up until two days ago. All of a sudden, all 2.4ghz only devices disconnected from the network. I did my standard troubleshooting, and couldn't connect via 2.4 on any device. https://i.imgur.com/xULGuHz.png I have absolutely no idea what's going on. Setting the channel to 1 fixed it instantly, but for whatever reason 2446MHz-2483MHz is absolutely jammed at 100% utilisation with -51dBm interference. Any ideas? Nothing has changed in the last two days to cause this, no new electronics or anything. Certainly not anything that would absolutely destroy a ton of channels like that. [link] [comments] |
How do set up my VLANs properly on a Ubiquiti Security Gateway? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:48 PM PDT I have a security gate way that connects to a dumb switch and from that switch runs three computers and a ubiquity AP pro. I have 4 SSIDs and a 3 VLANs (2 ssids shelare a VLAN). When the VLANs are active nothing on those wireless networks are able to reach the Internet. Is it because I need a smart switch instead of a dumb switch to pass on the VLAN traffic to the security gateway for NATing? if not, what am I missing? [link] [comments] |
Mesh Wi-Fi for multi-building network? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 11:16 AM PDT Hello, Looking for some advice regarding a new build. Background: My parents are building a a ~3000 sqft log home with an additional 2000 sqft workshop/barn about 150 feet away from the home. The PUD is bringing in fiber to the garage termination box, and then will run Ethernet to another box in the office near the center of the home. Additional Ethernet will be run from the office, underground to the workshop. Fiber package is 100/100. I am looking for a system to provide Wi-Fi to both locations, running on the same network. They aren't do anything crazy, other than just normal web usage on phones/laptops/tablets and several internet connected TVs. There will also be a Nest Security system and cameras running on this network (with cameras at both the house and the barn). But the big thing is they are moving about 2 hours away from me. This system has to be simple and ideally I can access it easily as well to fix issues when they arise. I travel frequently and so an app interface would be ideal for me, since I am often not in front of a computer. I have been looking at Mesh Networking systems because I like the idea of adding additional nodes in the event I discover coverage issues in the home. With the home being made of 12" thick logs with a substantial amount of stone masonry on interior walls, I am concerned that even with the office being central-ish, I may find the network doesn't make it down the hallway and out to the garage where there is Wi-Fi connected door openers or it won't be able to reach outside to the patio. So if I go with a mesh system, I could just purchase another node and drop in place and fill in the gaps. My question is really, does anyone have specific recommendations for what I should be doing? I am leaning towards something like eero or Google Wi-Fi because of the simplicity (though I am concerned Google abandoned their Wi-Fi system). The main concern I have is how will these systems perform with one of the nodes not in reach of the main house (the node in the Barn most likely won't mesh over Wi-Fi with the main house because of the distance, and will therefore only be connected by Ethernet). I know with eero I would need to buy two eeros (one for the barn and one for the house) and use beacons to fill out the rest. Whereas with Google Wi-Fi, all the nodes have Ethernet connectivity. Am I missing something obvious, or should I be looking at something else completely? Thanks in advance for any advice, Jake [link] [comments] |
Managed vs UnManaged Switch for home network. Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:10 PM PDT I am looking to run Ethernet into most of the rooms in my house. I am planning to have wires to all the tvs, plus my computers, xbox, camera dvr, etc. I will still have my wireless router, for all of the wireless devices. What I will do is have a switch in my office closet running to all of the ports around the house. My question is do I need a Managed or UnManaged switch? What I would like to do is Internet -- Switch -- Router. Right now I have a cable modem, but I should be getting fiber soon. I am thinking I would need a managed switch, because I would like to set priories to my Computer and Xbox, and even some port forwarding for my Plex server and Cameras. My understanding is to use a UnManaged switch I would need to go Internet -- Router -- Switch, and plug all the devices I want control over, plug them into the router. UnManged would be cheaper, almost half the price, but I don't know if it can handle what I need it for. Any advice would be helpful. EDIT: Wow, so many responses so quickly. I guess my main confusion is how does the router see the switch when it is plugged in. Does it see it as one device, or does it see the switch as the 16 or so devices that are plugged into it? Because if this is the case then i can still do all of the priority and port forwarding things I would like. So I guess Internet -- Router -- Switch will be the way to go. Also with this set up, I can keep the modem and router in the central location of my house and keep the switch in my office closet. And one last thing: So lets say in the four ports on my router, I have one to the switch, and the other three to my Camera Dvr, Xbox, and Smartthings box (All of which are located in the cabinet as the router), Will there be any performance difference between these devices and devices plugged into the switch? Is Google WiFi a solution to my issue? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 10:47 AM PDT I have an ASUS AC68U router running the Merlin firmware and it's working great. However, the router has to be placed at one end of the apartment, and devices on the other end sometimes have issues connecting to the WiFi (these are small "smart home" devices). Would adding the Google WiFi to my setup, use it as a range extender, work? Or is it overkill? It's $10 off right now (deal ends today). Actually, reading on SmallNetBuilder there appears to be much better performing devices for not a lot more (for example Tenda MW6 Nova Whole Home Mesh WiFi System for $50 more). [link] [comments] |
Cameras on one subnet, NAS on another. Posted: 14 Apr 2018 04:39 PM PDT I want to install some POE security cameras at my new place. I'd like to place them on their own subnet for security. However, I was thinking about using my Plex file NAS for storing the camera's data. Can this be done? My NAS is on the normal subnet as the rest of the network. The NAS does have 4 Ethernet ports. If I give the NAS two IP addresses on each subnet does that work, and does that circumvent the security reasons for placing the camera's on a subnet in the first place? If subnets aren't the answer, what about Vlans? [link] [comments] |
Are there different types of ethernet cables or a need to upgrade ethernet cables from 2007? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 04:34 PM PDT I'm considering hooking my xbox one up to the router directly (rather than wifi), but my ethernet cables are at least 10 years old. Would using these older cables be optimal, or have ethernet cables improved over the years, requiring new cables? [link] [comments] |
What's the best Mesh WiFi system that'll work for me, given my odd requirements? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 07:52 PM PDT My room is a WiFi dead spot and the only thing that seems to work are Plume Pods. I have one Plume pod hard-wired to my router, two pods throughout the house, and the last being in my bedroom. That system was flawless up until a recent firmware update which seemingly ruined everything. I'm in the market for a better, more stable Mesh WiFi system that's similar to the Plume system in the sense that it offers small devices that plug into electrical sockets that can daisy chain a wireless signal further away, as well as having Ethernet ports, so I can plug my desktop PC into. I'm in a small 1.5-story house (almost like a split level) that's shaped sort of like an L. My room and the router have the most distance. Requirements

How do I calculate repeater bandwidth degradation? Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:55 AM PDT Afaik the average repeater halves your bandwidth about 50%, but would further repeaters (ie: a 2nd repeater extending the signal from the first repeater) further lower the bandwidth? and by how much? Cox internet services. Getting a roommate account. Posted: 14 Apr 2018 03:41 PM PDT So I did a little bit of research on the thread and saw someone posted a similar question about a year ago. However I believe mine is a little bit different. I was told that I could have two ISP's in my apartment complex by a spectrum sales associate. However they didn't know that there was only one line for my unit and that meant that I would have to have one or the other. So that plan was scrapped. Now onto my new one. I just got a roommate cox account but a technician has to come out to activate my modem. What I am wondering is if the same problem will arise. Can I share the same line but have two different modems or does there have to be two separate lines for two services? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Apr 2018 11:28 AM PDT I'm looking in to creating two separate VLANs to divide my network up in to two sets of traffic. One for VPN traffic and the second for regular ISP traffic, however I'm concerned about potential bottlenecking on a gigabit network. I am using a pfSense router with one port for LAN connected to a switch and one port for WAN. As I understand it, any traffic that wants to go from VLAN 1 to VLAN 2 (and vice versa) has to pass through the router. A common scenario in my home would be the following:
Because the traffic from Computer A has to go through the router's LAN interface at 400Mbps, and the traffic from Computer B also has to go through the router's LAN interface at 1000Mbps, does that mean that either the download and/or the file transfer will see a significant bottleneck? If my assessment is correct, could this problem be mitigated by adding another LAN port to the router and giving each VLAN its own dedicated interface? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Apr 2018 03:03 PM PDT I moved into a new place and the wifi signal doesn't even reach my room. I am considering getting TP-Link TL-WR841N, just because my friend has that one. How do I know if it's signal will be strong enough to reach my room? What are the parameters I should look for? If anyone has any recommendations I'd appreciate it. Not looking for anything expensive, something "good enough" or better than the netgear one will do. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Accidentally disconnected FIOS ONT Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:49 PM PDT Hey all, thanks to your collective great advice I went ahead with an ERX/AP AC combo with my Fios setup. Trouble is, while plugging everything in, I managed to knock out the fiber cable from the ONT (small yellow cable that was feeding into a bright green "funnel"-type thing). I've tried putting the cable back in, but it's not fixing anything. Any advice how to fix this as I'd rather not wait for tech. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:48 PM PDT I hate the ATT router. From the pain in the ass UI to assign static IPs to the inability to use a PiHole at the router level. So I dug out my old N66U and decided to mess with using it instead. As I understand it I can't use the Arris in a completely dumb bridge, but IP passthrough is the closest? I'm honestly not sure I understand the difference. So what's the pro/con there? Anything else I need to configure on either device to make this as seamless as possible? Really stupid question: If I just turn off the wifi on the Arris and give the same names to the Asus... will that work? So I don't have to reconfigure all my wifi clients? Wishful thinking... On the Asus, Merlin still the way to go? I set it up years ago specifically for the VPN features. I don't really need that anymore. Is Merlin secure still? I grabbed the latest version here. What should I be thinking about? Feel free to talk me out of the whole thing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Apr 2018 09:40 AM PDT With my D-Link 1216T in the web interface I cannot create new VLANs. When I hit add, it comes up with a blank white box that doesn't go away. I've tried on chrome, chromium, Firefox, and edge on Linux and Windows 10 [link] [comments] |

Quick question regarding host/network IDs. Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:57 PM PDT Please let me know if this type of question isn't allowed here. If we have the IP address 12.50.10.27 with a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0, how do we determine which part of the address is the network and which part is the host? I know typically, 255 in the subnet mask represents the network while 0 represents the host, I'm just a little confused about the 254. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:47 PM PDT I am looking to put a HD Homerun in my attic by my antenna. I have seen some things that claim to let you run signal through your power lines to your router. Has anyone had experience with these? Are the connections solid. Does it mess with any of the power running through my home? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:08 AM PDT Hi, I currently have a Telstra TG582n modem/router connected to a Nighthawk R7000 router. I am wanting to bridge the Telstra modem as i currently have 2 routers going with this setup. I've tried to change the mode to bridging in the Telstra modem webpage but not sure it's working. I have the modem/router and router connected via an ethernet cable. Help would be appreciated [link] [comments] |
