Cybersecurity student looking laptop for internship and school. XPS 15, MBP 15, or other recommended?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 11:51 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, under $3,000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't really care for a touchscreen. Looking for good specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The lighter the better

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Have not used Mac ever and probably should learn since going to security. But know how to use Linux and Windows but nothing is really required.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 in, but can live with 13

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD, no video editing, no photo editing, just fortnite for gaming. Looking to run Wireshark, VMWare, burp suite, and other security programs.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just fortnite, don't really need extremly high graphics

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality with nice keyboard and touchpad

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Right not it looks like I am leaning towards MBP with TP 2.9GHz Processor 512GB Storage. I have never used Mac OS and interested and learning it. Heard the XPS 15 was a good laptop but have not looked at a lot of reviews. Please recommend others.

Edit: Looking to buy before June, and also need the laptop to last for while

Computer Science Student looking for a lightweight laptop

Total budget and country of purchase: less than $1000, USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best spec for the money. I don't care about form factor and battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. Preferably less than 3lb (1.35kg).

Which OS do you require? N/A

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. bigger than 12".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Image/Video processing (computer vision) on MatLab. Other than that, nothing intensive.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? High quality screen (good color and brightness), good touchpad, good soundcard is a plus.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm basically looking for a lightweight laptop with high quality screen. I prefer to have more than 8GB of RAM, and storage is not an issue.

I'm considering MacBook Air 13" and XPS 13s, but I look for less expensive alternatives.

12th grade student that loves coding and a bit of editing

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:06 AM PDT

Looking to purchase a laptop that is thin, at least 8 Gb ram, SSD , Windows (does not have to be preinstalled), at least i5 and not much else matters. Battery life is a nice to have.

Don't need a huge screen but 14ish or a bit more is great, don't need touch or a fancy gpu either.

I'll be mostly coding and using the laptop for school, multimedia. Maybe with an option to learn Photoshop on it(?)

My budget is around $1000 and thanks in advance for any help :)

P.S: I'll be ordering from the US (I'm going to be staying there for a week only)

    $1150 Budget, 8250U + MX150 + Metal Build + Stylus Support

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1150 USD/$1450 AUD, Buying in Australia (most laptops on Amazon US ship to Australia, I have access to Newegg AU, eBay, etc. as well as JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, and other Australian tech stores).

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -fill here, remove dashes-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Under 4 pounds, preferably. It doesn't have to be too thin, but relatively portable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13, 14, or 15 inch are all fine.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video editing on Sony Vegas. Photoshop. Rocket League.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rocket League at High Quality settings (hence the MX150).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need a stylus, as I'm going to be doing art on this device. Good build quality is a must, as I need it to last.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm mainly looking for a list of 8250U/8550U + MX150 laptops, because I know they're out there, but I want to take a look at a relatively comprehensive list of them. Right now, the Zenbook 13 is my main choice, as it supports a stylus and has an 8250U+MX150, along with an aluminium build, but there aren't too many reviews.

Looking for Gaming Laptop ($3,000.00 budget)

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:53 PM PDT

    Hey there!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $3,000 CAD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs hand down, I'll never game without an outlet :P

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important, but tbh I never really was fond of the size of alienware laptops. My cousins have them, and they're quite bulky and unappealing to me. (Not a deciding factor regardless)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows silly

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably larger as I'd be using it primarily while travelling.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Pure gams

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? VR, fc5, everything really :P

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good touchpad is always a bonus. I need at least 512gb ssd, and preferably hdd on top of that. Or just balls to the wall 1tb ssd.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking around a bit. I really like the sound of the razer blade pro ($2,549.99) but I'm wondering if there's similar spec'd laptops for a cheaper price (Such as this MSI for $1,549.99 which appears to have similar specs minus the 2tb harddrive. Makes me feel like I'm paying $1k for a tb hard drive lmao.)

My previous gaming laptop was a Sager and I absoultely loved that thing. It's still sitting under my television as my couch-console, regardless of the fact its 8 years old!

    Thanks guys! U r great.

Looking for a desktop replacement, budget of about $1000 (US)

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:27 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
As per title, around $1000ish. United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Most important would probably be performance and reliability, which I guess falls under specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important. It won't be moving around much.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Has to be Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I like having a big screen with a high resolution, but I don't want to pay too much of a premium if it's going to result in diminishing returns. So basically, bigger is better, but I can compromise here.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I do some gaming. Nothing crazy intensive, but I would like to have the option of livestreaming my games, especially my D&D games (which I run on Roll20.net).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Roll20, as noted above. Other than that, nothing specific, but probably nothing more intensive than, like, the Batman Arkham games at low/medium settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
My extra monitor uses a VGA cable so I suppose I need a VGA port. Must have a decent keyboard with a proper 10-key numpad for data entry. Built-in microphone is a major plus so I don't need to wear a headset all the time (I don't know if there are any laptops that don't come with those these days, but hey). Would like to have a built-in optical drive; I don't really have space on my desk for an external one. I mentioned reliability above, so, sure, reliable build quality, and a decent warranty couldn't hurt either.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Don't need any fancy stuff like touch screen or finger print reader. A good keyboard is important. Graphics are important. Would like an optical drive but willing to purchase external drive. Storage is very very important, as I want this to be a place to store lots of photos. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you to anyone who leaves a comment. It has been a while since I've owned a working computer so I'm not quite sure what is the best option for me. Looking for a laptop with a 1050 or 1050 Ti for photo and video editing at about €1200-1500, any suggestions?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 12:33 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around €1200, but my budget is flexible, I'm buying in Sweden.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs, screen and build quality for the money, don't care about the battery life or weight as long as it doesn't weigh like 10 pounds and have a 30 minute battery life, since it will be plugged in a majority of the time.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all as long as the extra weight and thickness means I get good thermal performance.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe Lightroom, Premiere, Ableton Live and rarely Photoshop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't mind running games at lower settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good screen is the most important part, I'm fine with 1080p as long as the brightness is good and the colors are accurate.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

There's been a whole sea of new gaming laptops hitting the market lately, but most of them have crappy screens which is the most important factor for me. I would love something similar to the Gigabyte Aero 15 but it seems like they only come with the GTX 1060 which is out of my budget and the Sabre 15 cuts too many corners on the build quality to keep the price low, judging from the reviews I've seen.

Are there any laptops that are similar to the Gigabyte Aero 15, but with a GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti? Or are there any mobile workstations like the Thinkpad P series I should look at?

Laptop for school and light gaming

Canada and less than 600 CAD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Im probably gonna carry it around every now and then and move it around the house so it's kind of important

Microsoft office stuff, game called eudemons online (not too demanding at all) and I've been meaning to try out fortnite so it'd be cool if it could run it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'm willing to play fortnite on low as long as I have like 30 fps consistently

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Anything that makes it so I don't need to type in my pin whether it's windows hello or fingerprint sensor. Reliable build quality is also important

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't upgrade laptops that often. I'm only upgrading now cause my old 2012 laptop is starting to really show its age so I want something that will last in terms of performance and battery. I don't need future proof gaming specs though.

    Cheap laptop that allows upgrading

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 10:18 PM PDT

Im in engineering grad school and need to get a new laptop. Would mostly need to run things like Matlab/Mathcad and Structural Analysis programs. I rarely have to use AutoCAD or anything 3D. Most of my modeling is 2D but involves large data manipulation and program multitasking. Dont know computers that well but im guessing a fast processor and 8+ ram is more important to me than a great gpu. Problem is my budget is only $300-$450. At that price I know I will not find anything that would actually be worth it. So Im thinking to get a good quality but cheap model laptop that, over time, I can build up and improve performance. Only really talking about adding a lot more RAM and a new gpu. So would still need the laptop to have a solid processor. Okay with buying certified refurbished in some cases.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $450 US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No 2-1 models, best processor possible. Good battery but thats not as important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Limited CAD and 3D Rendering. A alot of analysis and coding programs and a lot of multitasking. No gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? no gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A solid dependable quality, numeric keyboard, a decent amount of usb ports

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Processor most important to me. Being able to upgrade RAM and GPU a must.

    Thanks ahead everyone!

Is the Google Pixelbook worth it, at a discounted price?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 09:36 PM PDT

I have the opportunity to get a new Google Pixel book for about $1000, which is the 8GB + 256GB SSD, which is about $300 off the regular price. I also need a new laptop to be productive. Basically, I'll need to use the Chrome OS equivalents of Word, PowerPoint, etc. and I'll be coding and running Java, C, Python programs. Given this, is the Pixelbook worth it for this at this price? I'm looking for a good battery life too, so that's important in my decision.

    The pen is included too.

Hey thanks for reading. My situation is this, I currently have a Lenovo y50-70 from a few years back which has caused me many problems but I do really love the resolution (3840x2160). My main use will be running lots of price charts thinkorswim, a browser, and a messenger/ voice chat program(discord) at the same time on at least one one extra monitor.

I promised myself to never buy another Lenovo. Would like to do some gaming as well. I think I need at least one step above 1080p resolution because I am worried I won't be able to adjust to the lower resolution, but am open to suggestion. Have been looking at Acer Predators, Eluktronics, Asus, HP and Dell. Hard drive storage space is not important. Memory is, I want 32gb RAM but 16gb might be enough honestly, not sure. Thanks a lot for your consideration.

Acer Aspire E-15 vs Asus K550. Which laptop would you buy? Help me decide between these two very similar laptops please.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 07:20 PM PDT

I've narrowed down to these two laptops. * Acer https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLBJV7 * Asus https://flash.newegg.com/Product/9SIA4P056D7299

Im looking for some insight on which laptop would be a better buy. They seem extremely similar, the main difference is it seems like the acer has a newer i5-8250U vs the asuss older i7-6700HQ. Video cards and RAM look equal for them. i will use it mostly for 3D modeling and running 3D printing software. I would like to be able to do occasional gaming like fortnite. At the time i posted this the Acer is $600 and the Asus is $590.

Short list of things im curious of, * i5-8250U vs i7-6700HQ * Any general insigh on Acer vs Asus * not sure if it matters but Newegg vs Amazon * The case of my current Samsung is cracked at the hinge, hence why im looking for a new laptop.

    All responses are appreciated. Thanks!

Looking for general purpose/light gaming laptop in Canada, budget: $700.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:37 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Total budget: $700 (a bit over is fine). Country: Canada.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for money. I'll mostly be using it in places with a battery source, so battery life is a non-issue. Don't care at all about form.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Neither weight nor form are important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Indifferent about screen size.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD/video editing/photo editing. I do plan on playing games on Steam occasionally, but nothing intensive.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Being able to run games like FFXII or Nier: Automata at medium settings would be nice, but given the strict budget, it isn't a big deal. Generally the games I'm into don't have high requirements, nor do I care about framerate all that much.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is important. Hard drive space is somewhat important, I'd like around 1TB if possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm considering this laptop right now (Asus VivoBook X555QA). Do you think I should buy it, or look for something else?

Looking for a gaming laptop in Canada with a budget of ~500$

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 500$ or so, and in Canada

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important to a certain degree

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, Dark Souls 3, Overwatch, League, Skyrim, Nier Automata

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd like to be able to run Dark Souls 3 at a minimum of 30 fps, and also games like League, Skyrim, Overwatch with decent fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Preferably with a good quality keyboard, anything else is optional

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Overall, since I'm on a low budget, I'm not looking for a beast pc or anything, just something I can use to get by, since my laptop has a crappy integrated video card, I can barely run any games on it.

    Thanks in advance.
