Weekly "anything goes" thread! Posted: 02 Mar 2018 04:41 AM PST Here's your chance to talk about whatever! Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread. Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed. [link] [comments]

How many extension functions is TOO many extension functions? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:55 PM PST I just started working with kotlin not too long ago, but i LOVE extension functions. They make life so much fun and easier, but i currently have about 16 on them in a utility class. Should i try to tone them down? I only use them when its use case would result in at least 3 different files. [link] [comments]

What the F**tter!? Understanding Flutter as an Android (Java) Developer Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:02 AM PST Wrote this blog yesterday as I tried wrapping my head around Flutter as someone who built apps using Java and Kotlin so far. Let me know about your thoughts. [link] [comments]

Can I use Appodeal without Admob account? If yes, how? If not, then what are the alternatives? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:02 PM PST As the title says. Also, I can't use Admob account because it has been disabled. If I make a new one, I'm sure google will find out and disable that account too. My account was disabled because I mistakenly showed snackbar on top of banner ad, resulting in invalid click activity. I have made changes, appealed 4 times but no luck. So I tried appodeal but they say they need an Admob account. Is it possible to use it without Admob and if not what are the alternatives? Tldr : Admob account disabled. Can't use appodeal without it. What are my best options? [link] [comments]

Jumping ship to Kotlin in the midst of learning Java? Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:52 PM PST I am a couple years experienced with some Python, some C++, but mostly Java as my focus since I plan to start a career in Android app development next year. Now I am becoming increasingly proficient in Android studio and have no problem navigating Java in other IDEs, but everywhere I turn I see Kotlin. Yes I have Googled it and yes I somewhat understand how it is different and the benefits. However, would I be screwing myself by switching all my efforts to learning Kotlin now, 6 months before I graduate and go into the workforce? I feel like if I stay on the same track I will be pretty well equipped in 6 months but will I get out there and be at a huge disadvantage to those who jumped on Kotlin now? My biggest concern is to be half-ass proficient in Java and Kotlin but not be able to hold my own against someone who stuck with one or the other. [link] [comments]
As a non-US developer, am I responsible for declaring taxes on the US? Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:50 PM PST I recently created my first in-app purchase and I'm now studying the taxes I need to pay. I came across this link: https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/138000?hl=en, which answered a bunch of questions but there still one left. There is a section about the US but it refers to the Wisconsin state only. Does that mean I have to file a VAT tax form for each of the other states? Or maybe for the US? Or even none? Thank you! Are there any cons to start building with Kotlin on top of Java? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:30 AM PST I have a pretty big project (25 activities, 30 fragments, many custom views...), which is a couple of years old, already in production and has a solid amount of users. I want to slowly start dumping JAVA and convert it to Kotlin. I don't want to do it all at the same time because it would probably take weeks/months and I can't afford the project to go that long without an update. Would it be a good approach to start by only creating new Kotlin classes and then also slowly start converting all JAVA to Kotlin? Or is it a bad approach to slowly build Kotlin on top of JAVA? I can't see any cons by the approach I just mentioned, but I'm wondering if anyone can share their experience with this. I'm mainly asking because I once made the same mistake with iOS (Obj C & Swift). I started building Swift on top of Obj C which seemed to work well at the start, but as the project got bigger and Swift became more entangled with Obj C code, the compile times became absolutely awful. Took me months to fix it all up. [link] [comments]
