    Simple Questions - March 31, 2018

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I spent 12 hours building my first PC yesterday and dedicating time to setting up the RGB fans and Lighting Node Pro (Corsair).

The PSU is on and plugged in, I turn on the computer and the mobo lights up but the fans do not turn on and neither does the GPU (no lighting) and the water cooler. Only the RAM seems to work(lights up). How do I get BIOS to show up on my monitor? Did I mess up with the PSU cables somewhere?

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I tried plugging in the monitor HDMI to the GPU and I don't see anything. I checked the cables and I think everything is plugged in. I also don't understand how to read the EZ lighting debug thing on my motherboard. The manual didn't help much.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

None for now unless requested? Low res photo https://imgur.com/a/mUeZj

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I am a first time builder who is on the young side, so I probably messed up somewhere along the way. I am willing to do anything to get this fixed before Sunday. :(

Edit: To all those asking why I bought the steel series 840. I was in the market for a wireless headset all in one. Sure I could have got a quality pair of wireless audio technica's, but then for a mic I would have to get a standalone which I really don't want.

Price wise the siberia 800's were in the 300's (if you can even get your hands on them anymore, instore retail price is in the 400's aswell) and the Astro a50 gen 3's are $450ish AUD.

Why so much dislike here for MSI motherboards?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:54 PM PDT

Every time MSI gets mentioned here it's usually negative. I have had really great stability from my last two systems using them. I'll admit that I'm not the most aggressive overclocker though. On my B350 board with a Ryzen 1700 I just put it to 3.5 ghz and left it. Are other boards getting more stable top end results? Or do they have reliability issues?

I'm helping 2 different relatives build systems this month so I wanted to check.

I finally completed my first PC build!

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:50 AM PDT

As the title says, I finally built my first PC and it is capable of running all the engineering software I need for school and my gaming needs and I couldn't be more stoked. Thanks for all the help from r/buildapc! Here's some pictures:

    https://imgur.com/a/YJvJI

So far it runs great and the only issue I have is blurring/overlapping graphics and text in games and I have not been able to figure out how to fix the problem. Everything is perfectly clear and looks great when you aren't moving but when you do move text becomes illegible and the graphics kind of blend together. I linked a video to show you what I mean (Sorry for the music, I didn't think to turn it off). I have changed a bunch of different settings but nothing seems to fix the issue and it happens on all games and both my 75hz and 60hz monitor.:

This is Elvarg, my brand new gaming PC!

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:34 PM PDT

This build is very special to me because I built it as a celebration to 3 things: 1. My cancer going into remission 2. Graduating from college on time 3. Finding a job before graduation. I named the build Elvarg because it is red and all of the MSI components with dragons all over it reminded me of a dragon.

Can't decide which Motherboard to buy for 8700k

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 08:15 AM PDT

Hello everyone! So I am currently working on upgrading my pc to the 8th gen 8700k processor. I am stuck however on two motherboards and need help deciding which one to go with. I will be overclocking the processor. I currently have an m.2 ssd 960 pro and a GTX 1080 that will go in the new build.

The two choices, which and why?

Best Mechanical Keyboard for Macro and RGB progamming?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 03:27 PM PDT

I've been looking around for an upgrade to my keyboard and I've looked at all the major brands like razer, corsair, logitech, etc and I can't seem to find anything on their websites that explain their macro and rgb software in detail. A keyboard with keys used specifically for macros like on the g613 or the blackwidow chroma v2 would be good. I would also like to perform macros like locking my pc by hitting 2 keys at once or something like that. I don't know if my perfect keyboard even exists out there but I thought I'd ask.

Can you guys look over my build one last time before I buy the rest of my parts?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:51 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly 1080p 144hz gaming with modern AAA titles like Far Cry 5, Witcher 3, GTA V, etc. Also need some processing power, as I am working on my degree and use some engineering software. No crazy intensive modelling or anything though.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p, 60+ fps (more the better), high-ultra settings

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Around $1200 for the whole system

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I was wondering if I should switch to an i5-8400 instead, as I could save some money both on the CPU itself and the cooler. Would there be any significant fps difference in gaming? Both should be able to easily handle the engineering software so that isn't a problem. Also curious if I need 650w or could drop to 550w

With regards to the PSU, I might go with a 850W one because I can't find many vendors with that PSU in stock. I went with this PSU because the price bump from 850 didn't seem that much.

I already have my monitors and i'll use my existing 2 SSD's and 1 HDD.

    EDIT:

I will use this build to play video games, ideally at highest graphics settings. I don't have a 144hz monitor yet but I plan to get one in the future, so I would need it to support that.

Ultimately I'm looking for advice on whether these parts mesh well together or if I should be looking at other parts entirely, as I believe spec-wise they will play all new games at highest quality

    Cheers

My almost completely new computer (aka $2000 RAM upgrade)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 06:05 AM PDT

    Wall of Text Warning, sorry

Hey guys, finally decided to fully upgrade the rest of my computer to follow my gpu upgrade from last year but would like some extra opinions on the parts I've picked + I've got some extra questions (at the bottom). Current Part List for comparison

This will be used for gaming, I like watching Twitch streams/YouTube videos while I game if that makes a difference. I'm looking to be running past, present, and future games at 1080p 60fps around max. A 144hz monitor upgrade is definitely planned for the future as well but hitting 60fps at max on new games is the first goal before I start running everything at 144fps max settings. I'm sure that I'll get 144fps in League with this build, but for Vermintide 2/Shadow of Mordor/Far Cry 5/Witcher 3 I'm totally fine with 60fps as long as it's constant and on the mostly-highest settings.

Let's say budget is a few hundred around what my current list costs. If you're gonna give me a list that costs a lot more or a lot less I wanna know the reasoning behind it.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

This list might be a little cluttered. The pieces marked as $0.00 are the ones I already own. Windows is in there but I'm not sure if I need to buy it or not (see questions below). Two 144hz monitors are in there; I only want one and those are the two choices I've come to with my own research but I'd like help with that (see questions below). An extra SSD is in there and I'd really like some help with that department (see questions below) pls. Without Windows, the two monitors, and the extra SSD, the Total is actually $1234.91.

    Questions

Cooler: I don't plan on overclocking straight away but I want the option available in the future. Is this cooler fine for that? I saw some coolers that were two to three times the price like the H100i and the X72, I believe those are all liquid coolers and I won't need one of those right?

Motherboard: I tried using this post to figure out what model/manufacturer I'd want but I honestly have no idea. I think this was actually cheaper than one tiered below it but idk. Maybe for my purposes this is overkill and I could go down some notches and save some money?

SSD: I'm currently using some Kingston SSD for mostly just my OS and some programs. I got a Samsung 850 Pro for free and I intend to swap. The thing is, it's the same capacity and it's just not really enough if I wanna put games on it. For example, I had 50GB free on my SSD until I moved Total War: Warhammer onto it. If I want faster load times on another game I'm shit out of luck cause there's no space left. Is ditching the Kingston SSD even worth it? I've had it for like 7 years now, do SSDs degrade over time? I have a Crucial MX300 525GB SSD in the list, should I get it right away or can I get it later to save money for now. Basically I'm gonna have 3 SSDs (2 low capacity, 1 high capacity) and 1 HDD and I don't know what I should be using them for.

PSU: So PCPartPicker estimates my wattage to be at 400W. Should I go save some money and go for a 550W, stay at 650W, or move up to 750W for breathing room? In the case that I do start overclocking, I don't know how much power I'll want.

Warranty: When purchasing my parts, should I just skip all the bonus warranty/protection plans? The parts I'm buying have their own warranties already (ex. with EVGA rather than Newegg), don't they?

Assembly: I'm pretty nervous about trying to assemble this all myself so I plan on getting Memory Express to do it. Yay/Nay?

Windows: My copy of Windows 10 was upgraded from Windows 7, I'm not sure if it was a key that I have or OEM or whatever. Are there ways for me to transfer my Windows copy over to the new machine or will I need to buy a new one?

Monitor: I'm on the fence about whether I want to get this now or in a month or so but I will get it at some point. My current monitor is in the parts list, I will use it as a second monitor for stream/youtube watching while I game once I get a new one. With that said I could get the 144hz version of the monitor I currently have and it will likely make for a nicer looking setup but I believe I read something about there being a problem with it and certain other monitors that could possibly cause discomfort for certain people. Thus, the ViewSonic XG2401 is my other choice. Which should I get? Any other suggestions?

Sorry again for the wall of text, I just wanna make sure that I'm doing this right because it's a lot of money.

Thanks for reading if you did and thanks even more if you help.

Two graphics cards setup, SLI or not?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:25 PM PDT

I'm planning a setup with a massive 43 inch 3480x2160 monitor and a more normal 2560x1440 144 hz monitor for gaming. If I got two identical graphics cards, would I be better off running them in SLI or dedicating one card for each monitor?

Prebuilt v. BYO - a BYO build somebody suggested is fairly similar in price to a prebuilt I found. Unsure what differences I may be unaware of or why the prebuilt is better/worse.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    • 1440p on ultra settings on big title single player games. I'll do some multi player as well. Considering 4k monitor for single player at least since I don't think I'll mind an FPS drop on something like skyrim.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $2500 just for the tower.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Maryland, USA.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

This rig seems like it is fairly close to a suggestion somebody else has given me for a BYO build. Am I missing something on why the prices would be closer? Apart from being pre-built, it looks like the differences are fairly minor. A big part of why i wanted to go BYO was to save money & max what I could get quality-wise.

I'm thinking about going x2 1440p monitors. However, I've never gamed with that gap in the middle from using two screens. I'm almost considering going x1 4k and x1 1440p - use the 4k for single player games.

I haven't had a PC in years and I have a plain Xbox One, so I've never experienced 4k at low FPS v 1440p at crazy high rates to know the difference.

I know you can't 'future proof' - but it would be nice if this could still handle the big name games at standard settings after a few years of use.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:26 PM PDT

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Jcdgw6 I am working on my first PC build for mainly architecture software use (Autodesk Revit, Autocad, Rhino, Adobe Suite) and have put together the following build.

Do I need to include PC case fans and am I missing any other parts? (I am trying to build a quiet machine)

Appreciate any feedback on this build!

    Can't decide processor between i7 7700k, i7 6700k or 8700k.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:58 PM PDT

Hi guys long time lurker. I'm currently running a G4560 on a MSI z270 motherboard with a GTX 1080 and 16GB value ram.

The msi z270 was given for free to me and 16GB ram aswell the GTX 1080 was purchased for about $400 AUD and 4560 was purchased for $50 AUD.

i was thinking about what to pick processor wise.

The task I will be doing is playing games like league of legends, fortnite, PUBG, ESO, FF XIV and overwatch.

I do abit of java programming and vmware for uni. recently sold off my 2600k due to slowly being given parts from friends.

    I can purchase the following parts used 6700k for $290 AUD/ $222 USD used 7700k for $340 AUD/ $261 USD used 8700k for $550 AUD/ $422 USD

was wondering what do yu guys recommend? continue using the G4560 until prices go down? or should i purchase one of the kaby lake/ skylake processors

or sell of mobo and processor for the 8700k and new mobo?

really confused on what to do..

Should I switch out my R5-1600 for a better processor?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:45 PM PDT

So I'm currently rocking a R5-1600 with a GTX 1080 (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/gRrFTB) and was wondering if it would be worth switching my cpu out for a R7-1700 or R7-1700X for better performance. I have bought the R5-1600 but am still most likely in a position where I could return it (I have only opened the package to check the contents and have not opened any of the parts)

I'll be using my rig mainly for gaming

Would it be worth switching my cpu for a better one, bearing in mind the R7-1700 is about £90 more?

How much would you consider "too much" for gaming?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Just as title says - how much is too much? I'm asking because I live in Poland and I earn around 3000 PLN net after tax (around 900 $). GTX 1080 costs 2800-3300 PLN. I wanna buy myself a 10 000 PLN gaming PC (around 2500$), but I have that feeling in my guts "Damn man that's TOO MUCH". Even though I have around 50 000 PLN in savings I can't force myself to buy that PC, I just keep thinking it's a lot of money.

    Post your opinions, thanks! :)

Purchasing Gaming Headphones/Headset Help. I'm Completely lost.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 03:58 PM PDT

This is always the one subject I'm completely fucking lost on despite research so any explanations would be great just trying to get the best bang for my buck.

My ideal budget would be $75-120. I'm willing to go all the way up to $200 if the difference is that significant.

A headset would be nice because I would like to have a mic attached to my headset but if the quality/price ratio is as skewed as I've heard I'd be willing to go external. I was using wireless but if that's going to be big factor in price I suppose I can give that up in exchange for a decent length cord. I literally have no idea what the right direction to go is.

I just want high quality sound for gaming that justifies the price that's all I really ask lol. Any advice would be appreciated.
