    Simple Questions - March 30, 2018

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I made a Search Engine for r/BuildAPC that indexes ALL posts and daily question threads

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:13 AM PDT

I created a search engine that lets you search r/BuildAPC with better results than Google or Reddit search. All posts (since the beginning of the sub) are searchable including daily simple question threads.

    Link: r/BuildAPC Search Engine

I made this because a lot of great advice was buried in megathreads (ie: daily threads) and most questions/answers in megathreads don't show up on google/reddit search. Google only indexes the first 200 comments (even if you use site:reddit.com/r/buildapc) and Reddit doesn't search within them at all.

    Here are the features:

    • Instant results as you type (feels silky smooth)
    • Preview the top comments in posts (and permalinks to view them directly in context)
    • Details at a glance such as vote count, date submitted, and number of replies
    • To share your search results, just copy and paste the url (it updates as you search)
    • Handles typos/spelling/plural vs singular
    • Responsive on mobile devices
    • Filter by date (it's also instantaneous)
    • Use quotes "" or minus sign - operators to include or exclude search terms
    • "Megathread" tag appears if the search result is from a weekly question megathread
    • Filter results to only show results from megathreads
    • Updates new posts and megathreads daily

Open to any feedback/suggestions you have!

    Cant install GPU to motherboard?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:05 AM PDT

This is probably one of the stupidest posts in here but I am kinda buffled here. So it seems like the PCIE slot doesn't accept my graphics card which shouldn't happen. Here are my two parts: https://imgur.com/a/nLDiJ.

EDIT: Okay I am a fucking idiot. Thanks.

Can we stop telling people that its cheaper to build a High end computer than it is to buy a pre-built right now?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:48 AM PDT

THIS APPLIES TO HIGH END ONLY (1080 or 1080 ti)

Seriously, people keep telling others not to go prebuilt but if you want top of the line, it IS actually cheaper to go with prebuilt right now.

Everyone seems to think prebuilt is the devil but it is not.

Yes, if you are wanting a budget PC, then building your own is better.

    End Rant.

EDIT - Read my comments below for further discussion/clarification

How long should I take learning / reading up before I start building?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:10 PM PDT

Hi all! After years of not being able to build my own pc (money and living situation), I am finally making good money, and living on my own, which allows me space to build and set up! I have been reading through the guides in the sidebar, and although some things are still difficult to understand, I feel like I am understanding enough to start actually picking out parts. I am going for a primarily gaming PC. So my question is basically how long should I research before I start? Now that i am able to build one, I feel like I am rushing it. Also, is there anything else other then the recommended reading in the sidebar that you guys suggest? Thank you !

    Want to upgrade my PC!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:22 PM PDT

Hello! As the title states, I'd like to be able to use OBS to record and stream games on Twitch but currently when I do that the performance in the game dips and if the game is intense at all I quickly run out of memory and things start crashing. In general, I haven't upgraded anything on my PC in awhile and I'd like to do so. I'm not very intelligent when it comes to hardware, so I figured I'd come here. Here are the specs of my computer.

    Intel Core i5-4430 CPU @ 3.00 GHz, 3001 Mhz 4 Core(s) 4 Logical Processors 12 GB RAM

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960

More than happy to answer any questions or provide any other specs needed. Thanks!

Hi there! I’m new to the subreddit, and haven’t built a PC in over 10 years. Looking for a place to discuss my new build, and if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:59 AM PDT

    Motherboard: Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 ATX AM4

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 1600

    Graphics: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 8GB G1

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200RPM

    RAM: Ripjaws V Series 16BG (2x8) DDR4-3000

Power: EVGA Supernova G3 650W Gold Standard Fully Modular

I'm looking to run all modern games (hopefully) at 1440p, 60fps, and graphical settings that will easily surpass the current console market. I haven't built a tower in quite a long time. Technology has changed quite drastically since I last put stuff together, and just looking to see if maybe if there are some combinations or better options that I should take into consideration.

I was going to aim for a Ryzen 7 1800x, and a GTX 1080 ti, but of course, the market and consumers seem to have other ambitions, and the current price for this stuff is just abysmal.

I've had recommendations to just search for a cheaper, prebuilt alternative. However, I'm really excited to get back into the adult legos! Only do it once, true, but of course I will upgrade in the future. I have to start from scratch now, as my old setup is helplessly outdated.

Any suggestions, criticisms, words of wisdom, or just how your day is going would honestly mean wonders! Thank you for taking your time to read!

The most confusing computer issue I've ever dealt with

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:31 PM PDT

Ok first of all, a little context. I owned a pre-built for a while until I decided to build my own PC. Now it was a little cobbled together, the parts list is as follows: *i5 7600K *Asus Dual 1070 *Gigabyte H110M motherboard I've had this computer for around 4 months, and for some reason it keeps crashing randomly. It just suddenly freezes and the entire computer restarts. I have tried everything I can think of, taking apart and putting together all of the parts, resetting windows, trying to overclock, under clock, and pretty much everything else I could think of. Please help meI'mdyinginside I can answer any questions or provide any more info if need be

    Will 550W Power a 1070ti and Ryzen 5 1600

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:01 AM PDT

Just wondering if a 550W PSU will reliably power a 1070ti and a Ryzen 5 1600 (or maybe an i5 8400, haven't decided fully). Based on wattage it seems like this should be fine but I feel like I always see people going for higher wattage PSU's in comparable builds. Btw I don't plan on overclocking anything.

Bracket to fit three 3.5" Drives in two 5.25" bays?

    Hello all,

I'm looking for some sort of metal bracket that will let me fit three 3.5" HDD's into two 5.25" bays (without an external face, so I can keep the original drive bay covers on).

    Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Universal-Mounting-Bracket-BRACKET/dp/B0001UZQWG/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_lp_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VSSBMQZWTZKQNAQ48813

Upgrading to 8700k and need help.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:21 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have my heart set on the 8700k (based on reviews, my use and how long I want the upgrade to last). With that in mind, I think I've found a combination of parts for my upgrade but I am quite naive when it comes to motherboards and RAM. Given how important the MB is, can anybody offer any advice?

I do plan on overclocking so a decent MB that will facilitate that (Fingers crossed for 5GHz) will be essential.

I can afford up to £850 but would rather keep it below £700 (whoops).

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Need help with setting up H115i Pro AIO connections.

    • Corsair link shows 3 fans on the motherboard, but I'm not sure which is which.

    • Fan #1 on the H115i Pro stays at 0 rpm.

Is the speed I'm getting for my 960 Evo correct? I saw some post where you have to modify some bios config in order to get the best speed.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Fan header coming out of the pump is connected to CPU_FAN on the motherboard. Connecting to AIO results in the error [No CPU or CPU FAN] cant remember which.

Currently have the 2 fans in AIO connected to the 2 Fan connectors coming out from the pump.

Sata connector is powered from the 3 split sata cable connected to PSU. This is shared with the Kingston SSD.

The other 3 split sata cable is connected to the WD Blue and WD black.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    Which 4K monitor?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:51 PM PDT

I'm currently running two Dell U2715H (1440p, 60Hz and 27") but I'm playing with the thought of upgrading to 4K. Running a GTX1080Ti.

I'm very sensitive to backlight bleeding and am very proud about both Dells not having any of that even though they're IPS panels. The new monitor should definitely be larger than 27" and GSync would be a plus too I guess.

After some research I stumbled upon those two monitors since they seem to be the only ones that fulfill above points:

Acer Predator XB281HK (28" and TN panel)

Acer Predator XB321HK (32" and IPS panel)

I don't really want to go through the IPS lottery with the 32" model but I also fear that I will hate the colors of the TN 28" versus my Dell IPS panel....

What are your thoughts on this? Does anyone own one of those two monitors and can share experience? Any downsides of a large 28" TN monitor?

    [Build Help] AM4 mATX with dual PCIe 3.0x16 @ x8 ?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:59 PM PDT

I have searched high and low but can't find a mobo that meets these requirements:

    • Socket AM4 (for Ryzen 7 1700)
    • 2x PCIe 3.0 x16 @ x8
    • 4x DDR4 slots
    • Micro ATX form factor

(all 16 lanes to the PCIe slots need to be CPU lanes, not chipset lanes)

Does such a mobo exist? Maybe one is coming out soon?

    1440p with a GTX 1070?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:44 AM PDT

Hello everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I apologize in advance if this isn't the right place for this specific topic.

I have just recently been able to grab a GTX 1070 for MSRP and I'm very excited about it.

The question I had was, will I be able to enter the realm of 1440p gaming with a 1070? I am currently playing on my 1080p monitor but wanted to know if it would be worth it to purchase a 1440p monitor.

Thank you in advance for any advice you may have.

I just wanted to say thanks!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:15 PM PDT

I just wanted to say thanks. While my build is rather solid, it was in dire need of a new case and this subreddit came through for me. /u/Darkblister suggested the Fractal Design Meshify C - Oh. Mah. Gorsh... what a delight this case is! So easy to install everything, my big hands had no issues with anything at all. And the cable management? Coming from a place where I could only afford $30 cases this thing is a dream!

After I got the case, spent a few hours removing from the old case and then cleaning off all my components, I ran into a snag. All of the cheap cases always signified which wire was hot and which was ground for all the connectors, but in this case the power and reset switch wires were black with no +/- on them. /u/cf18 came through to tell me it didn't matter with those two.

A few hours of rest, I fired it up this morning and after a few software hiccups I'm back in business. Thanks Reddit! My new case, in it's home under my desk

Methods on how to fix motherboard antennas....

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:21 PM PDT

    Hello r/buildapc !

I recently built my PC using the ASRock Killer SLI/AC AM4 Mobo and it's great. I love the board, except that the wifi antennas are loose! There is nothing that talks about this issue online, except for one pcpartpicker thread and reviews that mention this issue.

    GPU blocking SATA ports/Motherboard suggestion?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:05 PM PDT

I've only upgraded my PC years after buying it completed already, so naturally now comes the suffering.

It's a Dell XPS 8300, the original GPU was already squishing cables and now my Gainward two fan GTX 1060 takes up so much space that plugging anything else in is a struggle. Also those RAM switches can't be opened without removing the GPU either.

Here's an illustration of my pain https://imgur.com/a/8RgQ1

Now I'd like to know if there is a way to make this work so I can plug my secondary HDD in (switched my main for an SSD).

If not, I'd at least like to know some decent motherboard that isn't too expensive but does its job better than this squished hell. Maybe a case too.

Edit: Also here's my userbench for your enjoyment, I am not quite sure what's going on with my external to be honest but I'll be fixing it soon. http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/8061842

    Need help on SSD. :)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:57 PM PDT

    Hello everyone.

So its been almost a year that I've wanting to finally get a SSD. A friend told me that Ali Express is having a sale (9h till it ends) so I think its the right time for me to get one since in my country a SSD is really expensive and we don't see sales very often.

Anyway, I use my PC only for gaming, and I'm planning to get a 250GB one for OS, WOW and BF1 (probably).

I've found three models that seems to be good for what I'm looking for:

    Kingston SSD - $80.94 (274,52 BRL)

    Samsung Evo 850 - $97,01 (329,02 BRL)

    Samsung Evo 860 - $100,99 (342,52 BRL)

The thing is, how worth is the 860 Evo or the 850 Evo if compared to the Kingston one?

    PC die

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:52 PM PDT

    Hello

So my PC did a random shutdown. Now when I restart the pc doesn't even go into the BIOS the monitor just goes blank.

I think it's the CPU that died but I'm not sure. I tried plugging in the monitor to the CPU internal GPU and it was the same.

If let's say it was the SSD with the windows on it would still let me into the BIOS, right?

    The CPU was a i5 3570k.

    What do you guys think?

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, web development, and hopefully forays into other types of development, graphic design, and light video production. Maybe even some streaming, if the rig can handle it.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'd like to run games at max FPS (at least 60+) with high or maximum settings at 1080p.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1500-2000.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I would like to buy all parts from Amazon (free shipping, a ton of gift cards on my account, and the ability to make payments on the remainder at 0% interest).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This is my first build, so if there is anything I'm missing, I would really appreciate a heads up! I'm assuming any hardware needed to put the build together would be included with the parts.

I'd like the build to be relatively future-proof, but if I'm spending substantially more than I should be, I'd like to know about it!

Finally, when it comes to ports, I see that the case has a couple USB ports and audio jacks on the front, but the image of the back panel doesn't show any built in (not to mention display ports, etc.). I'm hoping to have a minimum of 6 USB 3.0 ports, do I need to get anything additional to make that number?

Thank you so much to anyone that takes the time to help me out! I'm itching to pull the trigger but I definitely want some feedback first.

Is it smart to buy from EVGA B-Stock?

I want to buy a 1080 Ti without having to sell my house, and the B-Stock cards are a lot cheaper than their counterparts. I haven't heard anyone ever really talk about B-Stock before, it'd be nice to hear some of your guys' opinions on it
