Shady sale practice of bumping up the price and then dropping it to make the customer feel like it's a better deal than it actually is.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 06:05 AM PDT

Just wanted to point out the shady practice of bumping up the price for a day or two, just to drop it, making the deal look better than it actually is.

It's still lower than the price before (₹ 95) but still..

    This doesn't seem ethical..

Edit: a friend just posted the same in their Google+ community and immediately, the post was deleted by their moderators.

And they b*tch about people pirating their themes and/or use piracy apps in general. What I'm trying to say is, they don't want devs to get exploited or have their revenue taken away but they're okay with exploiting their (potential) customers.

Ad Block: Host (adaway) vs. VPN (adguard)?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 08:37 AM PDT

Hello, I'm trying to figure out the best way to block ads on my phone. It is a nexus 6p so I can root it if I need to (but I'm not sure I do).

My understanding is that right now there are two primary ways to block ads on the phone (with the exception of youtube which you use vanced for):

1.) Host with a program like Adaway. This will require root, but yields the least performance/battery hit (essentially none). However it is also the hardest to customize blocking on.

2.) Local VPN/DNS with a program like DNS66, Adguard, Blockada, and so on. This doesn't require root, but you pay for that because it uses additional resources as it always needs to be running. You also lose your VPN slot. But they are easy to customize blocking on.

Is that all correct? It seems to come down to how much you'd need to whitelist things (I probably wouldn't), if you'd be using a separate VPN a lot (I wouldn't) and if you are willing to take the performance/battery hit.

My question is if the above is correct, just how much of a performance/battery hit is it to run the VPN blockers like Adguard? Not having to root would be nice, but I probably don't want to end up in a position where I'm using as much resources to block the ads as I would letting them through. Also, is there anything else I should know about either of these methods or others?

    Thanks in advance!

Need help finding a perfect launcher for a user with visual impairment.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:40 AM PDT

    Hello.
One of my colleagues at work is an older woman (50+) who has trouble using her android phone with the default settings (e.g. font is too small to see in most apps, icons on the homescreen can be moved on accident, brightness and contrast are too low, etc.). Her phone's model is Meizu M2 Note and, afaik, it has a "easy mode" option in settings that makes the phone UI look like this. Although it is extremely easy for her to use, she doesn't like how "primitive" it looks (she says it makes her feel older than she is). She's quite tech savvy with computers so using something as simple as this launcher makes her feel dumb.
I'd like to help her, but, sadly, I don't know much about phone customization for vision impaired individuals (her case is not that severe, though). That's why I have a few questions to ask y'all:

    1. Is it possible to change the font size system-wide? (the device in question is rooted)
    2. Is there a way to change screen brightness/contrast above the level given in the settings?
    3. Is there a good launcher that doesn't look bad and has options to a) change app icon size b) lock the icons on the homescreen so they can't be moved?
    4. Are there any useful options I can turn on in the system settings?
    5. She really wants to get herself a smartwatch, but the screen size is usually too small for her to use. Are there any good models I can recommend her?

Thank you in advance, even a little help would be greatly appreciated :)

    apps like neko atsume?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:45 AM PDT

apolgies if this isn't the appropriate sub to ask!

i'm looking for apps for my mother. she's really into neko atsume. aside from that, she likes puzzles and those apps where you "crush" stuff (like candy crush, pet rescue, etc). i guess all in all just pretty casual stuff. she really seems to like apps that are animal-themed as well. would you have any suggestions? maybe stuff your kids played that they enjoyed? my mother isn't really too proficient with technology so something advertised as kid-friendly is probably a plus tbh

    thanks in advance!

[DEV] 1st Anniversary PROMO Giveaway! - RaspberryPOP NFC/QR/Barcode Scanner

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 05:53 AM PDT

    Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.drageniix_m.raspberrypop

It's been an entire year since I released RaspberryPOP, and to celebrate all the support this subreddit has given me, I'm here with promo codes and free hugs adorable gifs!

RaspberryPOP can be a typical scanner, telling you what's stored in a barcode or NFC tag... It can give you prices for products and links from shipping tracking numbers etc. But you can also decide to change what that tag does, whether you want it to start an album on Spotify, navigate to a location, connect to a bluetooth device, or even roll a die, or all of the above at once! It's as simple or versatile as you need.

I also present version 3.0, which now includes a scannable alarm (You need to scan a code/NFC tag to turn it off, which gets you out of bed!), a countdown that will show you exactly how much time until or has passed (I kept some on my frozen foods), and colorful labels to organize you collections.

Thanks again for the support! Comment or PM for a free promo code. :)

    VLC no Cast option

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:34 AM PDT

I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing wrong. I have the latest beta VLC for Android on a mate 9 running Android 7.0. Apparently I'm supposed to see a cast icon in the toolbar, but I'm not, either portrait or landscape, anyone else experiencing this?

Need an app with time&date stamp to log data

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:03 AM PDT

I am having a severe allergic reaction to something for the past year. It is a time-delayed reaction, probably to something chemical. In order to back track to determine my allergic trigger, I need any sort of Android app that will allow a text entry (possible allergen, meds tried, etc), and apply a time&date to the text entry. I need to have the text entry be as long as needed to make detailed notes. Anyone have app suggestions?

[Request] An app that will prevent the discord app from reverse portrait orientation.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:47 AM PDT

I've tried a few rotational control apps but they seem to either only allow me to set specific apps to one permanent rotation or they interfere with all apps.

I'm looking for something that will allow me to run the discord app on all orentations besides reversed portrait. It's really annoying how this app allows itself to turn upside down. Especially when you want to chat in landscape while laying down on the couch.

    Thanks in advance!

[DEV] doubleTwist Player brings Loudness Normalization -- 25 unlock codes to try it.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:05 PM PDT

    Hey Reddit,

One of the things that can be incredibly frustrating for anyone who regularly enjoys listening to music on their Android phone is the variations in loudness between different albums and songs.

To address this, we recently added support in doubleTwist Player for Loudness Normalization. Our audio engine analyzes each audio track and automatically adjusts the loudness to minimize extremes. If you've upgraded to doubleTwist Pro, all you need to do to activate it is go to Settings and turn the Loudness Normalization option on.

I'm also giving away 25 doubleTwist Pro unlock codes to folks who'd like to try it.

    Happy listening!
