How can you properly install and uninstall apps/software from Linux DEs Posted: 03 Mar 2018 06:49 AM PST More specifically related to Linux Mint and OpenSuse - How can you properly Install and uninstall apps/software from Linux via terminal which haven't been traditionally downloaded, meaning via software manager or synaptic package manager. Related to Uninstall:- To give you an example for Mint, I have VLC, the much older 2.2.2 and the newly released 3.0.1 which I downloaded and unpacked from the website I also have the Brave (new browser) So are there any ways to view in listed alphabetical fashion all of the applications/software in order to enter the correct sudo apt-get remove (name/title) or sudo apt-get autoremove (name/title) such as the correct VLC (the newer one because it's buggy)? Are there also any other effective ways completely uninstall (without damaging other software)? For your information, I've tried the above remove commands and it doesn't work after entering the name and the old vlc ended up uninstalling instead of the new one even after enter version. Related to Install:- Well to keep it very brief as I haven't typed this part up from experience-in-the-process, I don't always quite get the the tar xvfz commands both in Mint and Suse because having followed the the instructions you don't always find the configure or make file in the 'ls' command to run. So for Ubuntu/Mint (.deb) and OpenSuse (rpm) what are the best ways to install software downloaded directly from websites? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Computer won't recognize any other boot media after installing arch Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:25 PM PST I'm having a strange issue. After installing arch I rebooted, and it didnt work properly (i know how to fix it), but that's not the issue, now my computer won't recognize any other boot media, including the other drive in the computier. All the comes up in the boot menu now is 'boot' and it won't even allow me to boot of a USB. I'm using a Thinkpad X230. [link] [comments] |
Lifetime MacOS/Windows User Looking For a Transition to Linux Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:37 AM PST Hey there, I have always been using Windows (when it comes to gaming) and MacOS for my university needs (from 2010-2015). Both were really good but recently I've heard a lot of good stuff about Linux and I'd like to try it out. Are there many things I have to consider while doing this kind of transition? Could you recommend any Linux distribution for beginners? I've heard a lot of good stuff from people about Debian, Kubuntu and Linux Mint. Final question: I'm a "hardcore" Office Word (2016) user. It's included in my daily routine and I tend to type a lot. Is LibreOffice a good alternative or is there any way to get Office working on a Linux distribution without using "Wine"? Thank you for any advice! [link] [comments] |
Small business looking to use Linux for sending automated emails Posted: 03 Mar 2018 07:30 AM PST Dear Redditors, I am looking for a solution to a request my brother made. I am currently a Software Engineering major and I am taking a class on Unix/Linux this semester. My brother's request was if it were possible to send an email to his customers each time he finished a job for them. Studying Unix/Linux I have found how you can automate processes and I thought why can't you automate the process of sending emails? Like a script or a function that accepts an email as a parameter and uses that email as a sending address with the same body asking for a review on Google reviews. I am not familiar enough with Unix/Linux to say that is the best option and I am wondering if anyone here can help me out. Thank you -Sleepy3005 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2018 11:01 AM PST I'm running ubuntu lts on a lenovo t470 with an i5 processor. The machine works wonderfully however, when I open the power statistics and select processor, the program crashes and the cpu spikes for no reason. There will be no processes utilizing the cpu by more than 4% but the cpu usage goes haywire. There are several error messages. The first is from the processor tab itself: "Processor wakeups per second: GDbus.Error.org.freedesktop.UPower.GeneralError:cannot enabletimerstats" In terms of the actual processor display, I get: "(ID)IRQ0-(Wakeups)>1.9-(Command)Interrupt-(Details)IO-APC 2-edge timer," however, several different IRQ's pop up with a variance of the "interrupt" command . I have found a temporary fix which is to "$ systemctl restart upower," but I'm wondering if there is a more permanent fix considering it happens every time I open the processor tab in the gnome power stats. Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
Skipping acquire of configured file as repository doesn't support architecture '1386' Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:14 AM PST I got about 20 or 30 of those messages, all with different files and repositories, when I typed
into the terminal. I can't figure out what the problem is or why the architecture is '1386' instead of 'i386'. I'm pretty new to Linux as I was using Windows until the computer running it broke. I ran into this while I was trying to get WINE using these instructions. What can I do? Thanks for reading. Edit: I'm using Linux Lite on an HP Compaq 6820s [link] [comments] |
Cinnamon 'crashes' when opening many videos Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:31 AM PST Hi, I often open up many video files in a short space of time. Maybe 10 a minute. When I do this often I get a message that Cinnamon has crashed, and would I like to restart it. This is becoming very annoying. Can anyone help I use Cinnamon Mint, have an i5 processor with 8GB Ram, and a small GPU It is an issue whichever media player I use, either VLC or Media Player which comes as standard (I think just called Media Player) thanks [link] [comments] |

Increase root partition on non-lvm machine Posted: 03 Mar 2018 08:52 AM PST Hello, I have a VM that has 60GB and I have gone to vmware and expanded the disk to 120GB. But how do I increase the root partition now? note, that it's an ext4 filesystem and it does not have lvm. my fdisk is looking like this: Disk /dev/sda: 120 GiB, 128849018880 bytes, 251658240 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disklabel type: dos Disk identifier: 0x0005aafa I see that my VM sees the change to 120, however I've gone fdisk and deleted partition 1, and recreated it it's still 58GB -- what am I doing wrong? Deleting Windows for full time Ubuntu question. Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:56 PM PST I've been using Ubuntu for a few months now but currently have about 55 GB of my 256 SSD partitioned for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows 10. I'd like to dedicated the whole hard drive for Ubuntu since I haven't had the need to use Windows at all. My question is, is the installation files for Windows 10 still stored on another partition of my hard drive? I'd like to keep it just in case I decide to sell my computer and need to reinstall Windows. I have several other partitions on my hard drive that were already there when I purchased it. I've included a screen shot of Gparted of my different partitions on my Lenovo Yoga 910. Thanks! :) [link] [comments] |
I started Linux Foundation Course and ....have a question. Posted: 03 Mar 2018 11:46 AM PST Everything seemed good, until I hit the slide which says Linus Torvalds has the ultimate authority to accept patches. I have heard his name before but I got no fucking clue how good/bad/respected/disrespected he is in the community. But just having anyone as an ultimate authority doesn't feel good to me. That aside I want to know how do distributions handle this thing. Do they have to go him every time they want something changed? Or his changes are be default implemented in all distributions? How does this work? Well I may or may not have touched a loaded subject, anyways inputs welcome. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

ELI5. How do I file share win 10 and mint 18? Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:23 AM PST Background; Home network with multiple win 10 and a linux mint v18.3 "cinnamon" pc. Network name: WORKGROUP. Each pc is assigned an IP address. I share the "Downloads" folder on each pc. Windows pc's can access each other and have full read/write to "Downloads". I also share a couple printers over the network. The windows file and printer sharing seem to work fine. Problem; I've installed Linux mint v18.3 cinnamon on a laptop and I cannot figure out how to add it to the existing network and share the "Downloads" folder with read/write permissions. I've tried to follow numerous guides/tutorials which involve installing samba and editing /etc/samba/smb.conf yet I still cannot seem to get this to work. ;-( Windows pc's cannot see the linux pc at all, and when I try to open "Windows Network" on the linux pc, I get an error "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve the share list from the server: No such file or directory". I'm curious/enthusiastic about linux, but I'm green. Any help will be appreciated. TIA [link] [comments] |
How to make a script run at boot even when no screen is found? Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:55 AM PST So I have this script which is making the computer activate an access point (i'm using create_ap which uses dnsmasq and hostapd) The only problem is that the script (located in /etc/init.d/, made executable, ran "update-rc.d start_ap.sh defaults") is NOT running if there's no screen plugged in, but I need to make it run WITHOUT screen, when screen is plugged it works FLAWLESSLY. Also, I don't even know where to check the logs and if I plug the screen AFTER it has booted nothing pops up on the screen, it's like "no screen? Fuck you, I'm not doing anything" Here's the whole script: System info:

Dual Boot Windows 10 and Arch Linux on RAID 0 and HDD Posted: 03 Mar 2018 07:14 AM PST Hey there, I don't typically create posts of my own in there but I'm starting to get a bit desperate. basically, I want to dual boot Windows 10 (installed on 2 SSDs in RAID 0) and Arch Linux (installed on a separate HDD). Both of the OSs are installed in UEFI mode and Windows was installed first. I get that I have to mount my windows partition to Arch in order to os-prober to detect it but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all of this and I keep getting weird errors whenever I try. I've been on this for 2 weeks now. Here's a few additional info that I belive could help you. I have a total of 4 hard drives in this machine. Whenever I try to mount the /dev/md126 partition I get: mount: /mnt: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md126, missing codepage or helper program, or other error Thank you guys! Helping my elderly friend who is a permanent noob ?!? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 04:12 PM PST Hi Folks. I am not a noob myself & prefer Ubuntu Mate, BUT: My elderly friend (85+ y/o) is definitely a total end user forever. The problem: Years back I helped him to switch from win2k to Ubuntu 11.04 & he's been delighted with it ever since...until things got stick with his desired videos refusing to display. So...given that his h/w is quite old it is time to upgrade his system. This means it is now up to me to minimize any/all possible shocks as he is not adaptable & has trouble remembering new stuff. No way will he accept the newer Ubuntu UNLESS I can theme it closely to his preferred, classic, win2k sort of look - which was easy with Gnome2. Can anyone here point me at some neat stuff to theme, skin or adapt any Ubuntu flavour to be as close to a classic win2k look & feel as is possible ?? Thanks for any helpful replies !!! GRUB won't display after Windows 10 install Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:20 PM PST I have Manjaro installed properly on one partition of my hard drive, and I just put Windows 10 on the other. One Windows 10 was put on there, my computer doesn't even show GRUB, it just boots straight into Windows (even after proper shutdown). I used a live USB to set the Manjaro partition flag as boot, however that just resulted in "Missing operating system" being displayed with no other information. I just want GRUB to be able to give me the option for Manjaro and Windows 10. Manjaro 17.1.6 [link] [comments] |
Best way to add LibreOffice dotfiles to git? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:56 PM PST I have a git repository of my dotfiles so I'm like 2 commands away from restoring my customized environment on any Linux system. With most applications, it a simple config file that I just add to the git repo; however, with LibreOffice, there is a whole user profile containing many files. I'm mostly concerned with just adding the settings from [link] [comments] |
Trouble installing cmake 3.11.0 Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:57 PM PST So I've been trying to figure this out for a few days now and I'm stumped. I'm running Linuix Mint Cinnamon, and I'm trying to run Citra. I found build instructions on youtube and ran into a problem: CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:2 (cmake_minimum_required): CMake 3.8 or higher is required. You are running version 3.5.1 -- Configuring incomplete, errors occurred! So I tried following a guide to install cmake, but ran into this problem: bash: ./configure: No such file or directory All I wanted to do was play some fucking Pokemon and at this point I'm just confused and frustrated. Help? [link] [comments] |
