Asus ux430un heat only when charging

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:34 PM PST

    Hey!

I recently got my Asus ux430un. Im really pleased with it even tho i got coil whine. Is coil whine on warranty btw? I had coil whine on my other laptop also so im used to it.

Anyway. The fans go up and it seems like the computer gets hot even tho im only surfing the web. Only when im charging it at the same time tho. Is the cpu downclocking when running on battery?

Its fine since the battery time is good and it charges fast but it is kinda annoying if i need to work with the charger plugged in.

Energy settings is set to balance and it is also the only energy setting there is for some reason.

    Thanks in advance.

When are we going to see more Surface Book-like internals on non 2-in-1's from other manufacturers?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:10 AM PST

I'm talking exclusively about the separation of cpu/ram/ssd in the upper screen area while keeping the GPU/battery isolated in the base/keyboard area. For all chassis sizes, not just ultra thins, and not with detachable screens.

The Surface Book 2 is able to incorporate a 1060 in this configuration to somewhat good effect. The separation design itself has also been proven at various definitions of scale since late 2015 now.

Is it the extra cost and manufacturing complexity? Would it lead to too much reduced repair-ability?

I think the industry has to come to terms with this type of design sooner or later. Even in cases where the chassis is not ultra-book thin, there's too much thermal headroom lost; even medium sizes chassis experience some form of throttling etc. etc.

    What do other folks think?

Need a new laptop... Thinkpad X270 vs Vs Thinkpad 13 2nd Gen Vs ASUS 14" ZenBook UX430UA?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:40 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm really wanting to replace my Thinkpad T430s. I love it, but the battery life and display are killing it for me. I travel too much and I write too much. I also enjoy streaming from time to time, and a slight bump up would help in that department. I really care about battery life, weight, but more than anything, a long lasting, good build quality (hence why I lean towards Thinkpad). The price of the Asus and it's almost X1 Carbon specs have me seriously considering that as well.

My budget is $1000 (CDN), and I found all of them to be under this, though the X270 is right at the limit. The X270 would be my choice, but I'm wondering if the massive jump from 700 to 1000 is worth it from the Thinkpad 13, or if the 750 price from the Zenbook (open box) is worth it. If there are any other suggestions or comments, I'd love to hear them.

    Any insight would be appreciated!

    Acer Aspire 5 SSD compatibility

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 09:17 AM PST

I'm not very familiar with laptop hardware so my question is simple: does this model of the acer aspire 5 have space to add an M.2 SSD? I tried searching for specs outside the acer website but couldn't find anything definitive.

Upgrading laptop to SSD, OS Question

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 08:02 AM PST

    Hello,

I am looking into upgrading my laptop from an HDD to an SSD and I had a quick troubleshooting question. I used to use my laptop for everything but I recently built a desktop so I'm just using my laptop as a portable pc for work/school.

I had a lot of problems with my laptop, over the past year I've had to factory reset the computer at least 10 times because there would be time where the pc would completely freeze and windows was unresponsive. At some points, it took me 40 minutes to even be able to full boot up to my desktop screen where I could actually click on applications. I should probably make sure that's a hard drive problem but I'm almost certain because I always got a windows error that made it freeze and once I factory reset the laptop, it would go back to normal (at least for awhile).

So first, I should make sure that issue sounds like a hard drive problem. Second, if it is, I have an 2.5" SSD that I can use to switch out on my laptop. I checked that it's compatible and that I'm able to even replace the storage and it all looks good. My intention is, I was going to move all my important files onto my external hard drive so that if a clean wipe on my laptop is necessary, it wouldn't matter to me. If I do it this way, without needing to do anything involving cloning my HDD, do I use the disk that came with my laptop to reinstall windows? It was originally Windows 8 but I upgraded to Windows 10 through the free upgrade thing awhile back. I'm assuming that's not going to be an issue with getting back to Windows 10?

[Q] RAM upgrade for lenovo 520s-14IKB

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:00 AM PST

    Hi,

I want to upgrade the RAM of my Lenovo 520s-14IKB from 8gb to 16gb. I had bought an extra 8gb, but ended up wasting money on it, because my laptop only has 1 RAM slot (even though several spec info tools showed 2 slots available).

I don't want to make another mistake by buying a single 16gb stick and finding out that my laptop doesn't support it. Any help?

    Current specs: i5-8250U 1x 8gb DDR4 2666

    Thanks!

Assistance needed! Dell XPS 13 9350 making high pitched noise/buzzing noise!

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 06:21 PM PST

My XPS 13 9350 started making a high pitched noise/buzzing noise after I did a clean install of Windows 10. Appears to be coming from directly under the keyboard, close to the center.

Not sure how to otherwise describe it, but does anyone know what this is or what is going on?

Any help is very much appreciated!

    Thanks!

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -- Best specifications for the money

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -I dont care but I have to be able to install my win10 student os-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -Bigger than 11"-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I will run mostly hd video, some ligh photo editing and some office applications for class -

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Good screen (ips if possible), a ssd and good battery life would be great besides of the "best specifications for the money".
