I found this video cards? from the 90s which aparently are retailing from 200 to 400$ on ebay, I am wondering what they are for and how can I test if they still work (to sell them of course) and why such a high price for such an old piece of hardware?

    Semi boot

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:00 AM PDT

So earlier today i was undervolting my i3 7100, with a ASUS B250-plus board. I managed to push it down to 0.95 volts with intel XTU and stress tested it and it passed just fine, after that i tried 0.90 where upon it bluescreened. At reboot i entered bios and again increased the voltage to 0.95 and preceeded to save and exit.

When the system again booted it frooze at the "Click F2 or delete to enter UEFI" screen. I couldn't enter BIOS or enter windows. I reset the system but that time it wouldn't even show a picture.

    Please help!

Reinstall Windows 10 Without losing everything?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:09 PM PDT

I'm having trouble with failed Windows updates and was thinking maybe a reinstall of windows could fix this. However, when I tried to reinstall Windows 10, I get this: https://imgur.com/a/EqIux I have no option to keep everything. I have to drives and Windows is installed on my C drive, everything else in on my D drive. However I don't want to lose anything on my D and don't want to reinstall all my software (which is installed on D). Can I do this? Also is it possible to permanently disable Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant?

I'm looking for a way to share files between my desktop and laptop.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:20 AM PDT

Here's the situation: I use my laptop at the office and around town. My desktop stays home. My laptop and desktop are almost never together (what a tragedy). I'd like to be able to link the computers together so I can work on files regardless of where I am.

As it stands I have a few options:

    1. USB
    2. Google Drive or DropBox
    3. Server
    4. VPN

USB is a good option. It's cheap, offline, and quick. However, I might lose it and I'll have to remember to "update" the files regularly. In the event I do lose it or forget the USB I'll be left without the files to work on until I get another usb.

Google Drive, DropBox, or other online services make it easier to share those files without any extra parts, are free/cheap, and can sync files online. My only quarrel would be how trustworthy these companies could be. I don't have any top secret info, but I'd like to be able to share my files without worrying about what they could do with the data I upload. What if my files were hacked and someone was able to find personal data?

Server. Honestly, I have no info other than that they can cost too much work and money.

VPN is something that just came to me while writing this. I could have a storage device that is always on and connected to the wifi at home. I could use VPN to share those files from my laptop over the internet (securely?) to the storage device and then access it on my desktop over the wifi. Although, I don't know how safe, efficient, or cost-effective it would be.

    Any recommendations?

New Chrome Exploit that Can Spread Malware by Itself

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:43 PM PDT

So just to be clear here, I haven't downloading anything suspicious. This just randomly happened out of the blue.

So in case you don't know, Google Chrome has a feature that lets websites give you desktop notifications via a small box that pops up in the lower-right corner of the screen. Just today, out of nowhere, a completely black box shaped like the Chrome notification box appeared. When I right clicked on it, it said "Disable notifications from" and it didn't say where. That usually says the website it's from. When I immediately opened the task manager, a black window with no text in its title maximize itself. I instinctively turned off my PC by the power button. I searched around, and I couldn't find any documentation of this. I have no doubt that this is some kind of malware.

Does anyone know how I can safely get my important files off of the HDD and onto a USB stick without potentially spreading this malware to other computers, and more importantly, has this happened to anyone else?

Edit: Just to clarify, no I did not click the notification except for the right click.

Looking for advice from someone who does IT work in a school

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:57 AM PDT

My children came home from school yesterday and said that the kids were accessing Sonic.exe (horror game) and other flash-based horror games.

What I want to know is what policy you would usually have in place in a school to stop kids accessing this stuff? Their IT manager said that they just need to flag it to him and he'll block it...

However, I work in IT. We have one client which is a home for severely abused children. They have a young persons PC and it is so locked down. We use a Watchguard and have white approved websites ONLY. The school, however, said that gaming websites need to be approved so they can access learning websites? Surely a whitelist would be the best option here?

If someone could let me know what policies you have in place at your school. Or if I've posted in the wrong place, I'm sorry.

    Google account breached?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:06 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I got an email at about 5PM today about my google account being signed in in New Jersey on an iPod Touch (I dont have an iPod Touch nor do I live in Jersey). I saw the email an hour later and immediately changed my google password and added 2FA. What I'm concerned about is, the passwords.google.com function. Apparently, all of my chrome passwords were visible to this person/persons who had my google password.

I changed every single one of them (80+) on a different computer and browser (MacOS Safari). Im wondering if theres any way to tell they've been compromised, and any other steps I should take to protect myself from anything that could happen.

    Thanks!

How to decrypt files encrypted by a user that does not exist anymore. [Windows 7]

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:47 AM PDT

A few years ago I wanted to keep my sister from accessing my files so I went to properties>general>advanced>encrypt contents to secure data

I thought this would let me add a password to my data but apparently not. The filenames turned green, but that was basically the extent of the visible effects. Turns out my sister wasn't interested in my files anyway. However, recently the computer crashed during a thunderstorm or something, and they called a technician to repair it. I don't live here anymore, so I don't know precisely what happened to the computer. My computer used to have two accounts. One was the admin account and one extra that I created for my sister. After the technician came, all my software was uninstalled. Basically the computer was formatted but all the data was still there. That means that in the D drive I have a folder with all my stuff, but it's green, because it was encrypted by the old admin account. Now I can't access any of it. I have many movies and pictures that I would not like to part with. Can they be salvaged? Happy to provide additional details. Thanks.

Disk usage 100% all the time, DQL peaks at >400

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:46 AM PDT

I'm having serious issues with my Asus X540-LA lately. The OS is Win10 Home x64 1703. The disk usage seems to be 100% all the time. Usually it's the process I'm using in the foreground which takes up 40-80% of the disk usage even when it's not a demanding program. The list includes Chrome, iTunes, System, Task Manager and even Process Hacker 2 when I have all the other programs terminated. Process Hacker 2 shows high disk usage when trying to access other .exe files (Probably for monitoring?).

    Here's a list of what I've tried:

    1. A full malware scan of the PC, not infected. There's not a single anomalous behaviour other than the high DQL which renders my PC unusable (sluggish).
    2. Disabled all background push notifications
    3. Disabled the feature to allow Chrome to work in the background even after closing the program
    4. Disabled the Windows Update service on a startup level
    5. Disabled Superfetch at times, but Superfetch barely causes the problem for me and stopping it didn't do anything
    6. Disabled nearly all the programs from launching upon startup
    7. Disabled all the modern fancy animations, transparency, nothing helped

Here's a screenshot of the DQL on resmon

I've been using the PC for over a year (15 months) now but the problem's been happening since last month.

    Optimum Altice one

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:49 AM PDT

Just got this yesterday. This morning my kid comes into my bed wanting to watch tv. Ok cool... just let me sleep a few extra minutes. Damn thing wouldn't turn on in the bedroom. After unplugging it, pressing power a million times, downloading the app that doesn't tell me anything, I eventually tried tried the main box in the living room. It worked. Was about to tell my kid let's go into the living room but then tried one last time. Bedroom finally worked just by turning it on.

Does anyone know if the Altice One Mini will only work if the main box is on? And how to have this not happen?

    RAM/Motherboard Issue

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:44 AM PDT

My machine is having a few issues with outputting, and I have done a fair amount of troubleshooting and still dont have an solution.

I have tried a replacement MOBO, which was still not working but this board did have a red LED for the cpu error, so I returned the part and put everything back onto my original board. This is when i realised when test booting that if i had one RAM stick in bay 2 then the machine outputted, so i assumed it was an issue with the CPU not reading the bays properly. I ba e just fitted a replacement CPU and I am having the same issue. Is it possible that my board and CPU died at the same time in the same way? There are mo bent pins on the cpu or board and the machine was originally working fine for about a year.. Any Help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Connection and pings timing out until visiting comcast's website

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:31 PM PDT

    Hey folks

I've been having an issue where my twitch streams are constantly buffering even though my download speed tests 180mb down. Even when uploading to twitch you can see spikes of no traffic.

While it was happening to night, I started a constant ping to google and it was failing more than responding... until I loaded xfinity's website (on another computer) to ask them about it.

In this picture, you can see the the failures and the perfect connection after loading their website. This was about an hour ago, it's still going, I see no failures, and twitch hasn't buffered once since.

Does this seem a little suspicious to anyone else? I chatted with their atrocious support and all they could offer was reboot, do a speedtest, and send a tech out, but I don't think this is a modem issue, this sounds like their network to me.

    Thanks!

Err Name Not Resolved - windows 10 / comcast

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:29 AM PDT

This happens a few times a day for around 30 seconds each time. Internet disconnects(yellow exclamation mark on wifi symbol), any sites im on says Err Name Not Resolved. And then randomly comes back.

I have Xfinity 100mbps (wifi) with the dualband router they provided a few months ago. I use the 5Ghz network (they set up 2.4ghz and 5Ghz as separate connections).

This happened before i upgraded my service/router as well. But then when i got the 100mps with 5Ghz everything was fine until about a week or two ago.

I power cycled my router, flushed/renewed my DNS, changed my DNS to opendns....nothing works. All drivers are up to date.

I have an HP Omen laptop (2.8ghz, 500gb ssd, 16gb ram, gtx 1070), and im sitting about 30-40 feet away from my router. When it connects fine the speed is great.

I've checked Event Viewer as well and nothing notable on there.

    Laptop Lenovo - Screen

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:28 AM PDT

    Hey people,

    I bought a LENOVO G50-80 15/I7- 5500U/12/1/R5 M330 2GB in 09.08.2016 so it is still under 2 years warranty.

The thing is that the screen has one black dot that got bigger and now there is some place in the screen that I cannot see. Here you can see it: https://imgur.com/a/cqUlD

I has not been hit or any bad use of the sort. Do you think that they can void the warranty and say it was on me? Any idea about the repair price?

For reference, it was bought in MediaMarkt in Spain and their support didn't help much.

    Thanks!

New laptop runs 100% disk use and is slow

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:20 AM PDT

Greetings! I have a brand new MSI GL62M 7RD Gaming laptop running a 1TB 5400 RPM mechanical HDD and its super commited on running full on all the time. When i bought the proplems started immediatly.(Noob me didn't notice the proplem and neither did the guy at the store) So it went straight to their service part. Two week later at got it back and it seams all they did was reinstall Windows 10.. so i took matters in my own hands and now i've run out off hands and google searches. Help.

    I've tried:

Disabling Windows search and SuperFetch, Run a diskcheck and disk cleaner, Reset virtual memory, Updated all my drivers, Disabling AntiVirus, Fixed the StorAHCI.sys driver, Removed any unrelated software,

During one restart the proplem was solved, but only for a minute or two. still takes me a good 30s to open a program sometimes(like an empty text document on the desktop) Might be some input lag as a can button mash and a short while later everything will pop up, usely slowly. only sometimes though still annoying and frustrating.

Cannot uninstall Visual Studio for Mac no matter what I try; installation stopped at 70% because it consumed all my disk space. Now I cannot remove it and my disk has no room left. Help!

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:23 PM PDT

I have read every online tutorial and tried every deletion command I can think of on the command line to remove Xamarin and Visual studio. My poor Macbook Air is still showing only like 100kB of disk space left. Nothing has even made a dent. Please give me some guidance here. Visual Studio stopped midway through installation because I ran out of space. So I cannot locate a central application to uninstall it.

Cannot stop Windows from downloading in the background, is there anyway to stop this?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:32 PM PDT

CONTEXT: Recent Windows Update made it so that users couldn't disable updates in the background and rather let users set a data-limit for these updates. It still uses a lot of my Network usage and was wondering is there any programs or methods to bypass this problem. I get slower download speeds/horrible ping in online games because of it and it never stops! Thank you if you can help me!

Chrome Crashing on startup and weird graphical glitch

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:57 AM PDT

Out of the blue yesterday evening Chrome crashed on startup I tried restarting it but it just crashed again. I ended up reinstalling Chrome and the same error happens. I debugged the error in VS 2017 and it says that the chrome.dll is in access violation of a memory address. Here's what the debugging tool said verbatim:

Unhandled Exception at 0x00007FF8FEFCA0C5 (chrome.dll) in chrome.exe: 0xC00000005: Access violation reading location 0x0000000029828AED040

Also, when Chrome does open for a second before crashing, there is a weird graphical error going on with the search bar. This was earlier today, see the weird purple lines below and above the search bar? Heres a GIF of the graphical issue its worth noting that if I click anywhere on screen or just wait about 3 seconds after the GIF ends that it crashes and I get the error mentioned above.

I done a full scan using Windows Defender and it says my PC is clean and I've never clicked or gone to any links or sites that aren't fully legit. I've also never downloaded anything that's not from Steam or any other official publisher.

Can anyone recommend troubleshooting steps or give me an idea on what they think it is?

I'm about to get Malwarebytes or an extra AV program and run a premium scan to see if it picks anything up. I'll post those results here when it's done.

    Help with water damaged iphone

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:49 AM PDT

My daughter has dropped my other half's iphone in the bath and after drying it out it seemed to work fine, however after a while the screen started to turn a weird pink colour with lines down the screen. We took the phone apart with the correct tools following a YouTube video and made sure the lcd was still plugged in properly however this didn't seem to fix the issue, does anyone have any advice. Next step after this is just to replace it but if I can get it to work again would be brilliant
