Games run "fast" after computer is asleep until I restart computer

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:44 PM PDT

I don't know why but my games run fast. And by fast I don't mean FPS, but physical actions run faster than they should. This might sound great, but it causes sync and rubberband issues (See: https://streamable.com/z2odg) because the game isn't supposed to act this way. This happened in all games I have tested on: PUBG, Fortnite and Diablo 2 (D2 is the most drastic, casts happen almost twice as fast as they should, but the server knows it is not correct so they are "empty" casts)

It seems to only happen sometimes when waking from sleep, and if I restart the computer it tends to fix it. It is not network related as I can start up a stream and it broadcasts fine, ping is fine, and download speed is still over 110Mb/s

    Specs:

    CPU: Ryzen 7 1700 OC to 3.7GHz

Mobo: ASUS Crosshair VI Hero w/Wifi

    Memory: 32GB DDR4 @3200

    GPU: EVGA GTX 1080ti

Got water on my graphics card. Computer says it is working perfectly fine, but it clearly isn't. How do I find out if it is dead for sure?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:45 PM PDT

Hey guys, I got a little bit of water onto my graphics card unfortunately. The computer was plugged in but not switched on at the time. I immediately made efforts to remove the water by unplugging the card and then EXTREMELY GENTLY tapping it with a paper towel to get most of the water off. I then blew a fan on it for about 3 days as I read that was realistically the best I could do. I have since plugged the card back in and tried to use the computer, but it defaults to the integrated graphics. The light on my graphics card remains on and any program I have used to diagnose any issues have said it is running completely fine, but when I disable my integrated graphics, the computer just acts as if there is no card. It still says that it is detecting and using my graphics card, though. I tested with FurMark and it shows the card to be fluxuating at around 7-8 percent power. So my computer is detecting zero issues with my card but clearly something is wrong. What can I do to figure out if my card is dead or not? I am using an Asus 1060 3GB by the way, and drivers are definitely up to date, I made sure. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I think the hard drive in my laptop is failing. I am wondering if I could buy a new hard drive for it and somehow copy the entire contents of the old failing one to the new one. I am not well-versed in tech so forgive me if I'm not wording this correctly.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:00 AM PDT

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5720, Windows 7. Terrible noises coming from hard drive lately. Like I said in the title I'm a novice when it comes to computers so I was having trouble coming up with search terms to find out more about this. Is what I want to do even possible? Would Windows and all my files and programs be copied exactly? If this isn't possible, what do you recommend? I have programs that I wouldn't have any idea how to acquire again, that's the main reason why I don't just buy a new computer. Thank you in advance for any and all help.

I sold a laptop on ebay and now the guy is coming back to me saying it's faulty

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:34 AM PDT

I sold my erazor x7853 on ebay because i barely used it in the 6 months i owned it. The laptop was in perfect condition, no issues whatsoever. The guy received it on 28/03/2018 and said it was perfect, it's running perfectly and no issues which leads me to believe that his son who he bought the laptop for has somehow broken it.

today 30/03/2018 he has messaged me this: https://imgur.com/Biqatom

he says i wiped the laptop to try and clear a hard drive error.. which is stupid because i obviously used the windows 10 restart so all of my information was removed.. i've already paid my £200 fees and paid £40 to ship this to him.. what shall i do? shall i accept it has magically broken in the last 2 days and he should return it, or should i argue the fact the laptop was fine when i sent it and when he received it.

    UPDATE:

    new message from him: https://imgur.com/a/BclqE

    UPDATE2:

Also I'd just like to thank everyone for helping out. We are almost at an agreement. He is going to contact Medion and I am going to send him a copy of the invoice which states 1 year warranty starting september 2017. If that fails (which it shouldn't) we have almost agreed on me buying a new drive for £60. My only concern is that I don't think the drive has failed but it's a bit difficult for me to do anything about it.

Ethernet switch produced a very loud and bright spark inside the housing

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:23 PM PDT

I was hooking up and testing an Ethernet switch at work that may have been sitting for quite a while. When I plugged a cable in to one of the ports, there was a loud pop and a bright flash of light coming from behind the front face. The switch did not power off and was still working fine. I turned it off and decided to not mess with it anymore.

Could this be caused by excessive dust inside? Has anybody seen this happen before? I will probably open it up monday, if that is a likely cause, but I didn't want to go digging around inside right after the spark.

Older monitor (HP 2010i) suddenly got darker. Didn't go black, just lost about half of the brightness. Adjusted all specs we could find. Is this just a symptom of it breaking down or is there something else we could try?

My friend helped me build my PC; I don't know much about this stuff. How can I play games on higher settings?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:27 PM PDT

My processor is a i5 and my graphics card is a amd radeon r9 280x sapphire vapor-x oc 3gb ddr5. I can play any game on pretty high settings but I'm ready to take it to the next level (every setting maxed out). Unfortunately I don't know much about PC stuff so I don't know what to do or where to get anything. Would getting the exact same graphics card and adding it do something?

    Specific Loading Issue with YouTube

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:03 PM PDT

I have recently moved to a new apartment, and got a new internet service to go with it. For half a day or so I was able to watch YouTube videos on my iPod Touch until loading issues started occurring. Either the videos will not load at all whatsoever (the buffering ring will circle for eternity) or the videos will load exactly 5 seconds of the video and then go into the buffering.

I restarted my device. I restarted the router. Disconnected and reconnected from the WiFi. Deleted and redownloaded the app. Signed out and back in. I did some googling and was told to "Reset Network Settings". I did and it worked! For another half of a day. The same issue started up again and now resetting the network settings does nothing.

My boyfriend's phone is having no trouble loading the videos. Also I connected to a different WiFi (the one from the apartment lobby that reaches my apartment) and it still doesn't work, so it oddly doesn't seem like a WiFi issue even though that's what has recently changed.

I cannot play YouTube videos through other apps such as reddit or a browser. I can however play videos from other video sites and the YouTube Kids app. I'm really stumped and quite sad about it.

    Thank you for your time.

Strange FPS issues after a Driver update - where rolling back did not fix the issue

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:36 PM PDT

So I am unsure as to whether this is the correct subreddit to be posting this on, but anyway here goes:

So After updating my graphics drivers to a newer version (driver version 391.24 - aimed at optimising for FFXV) I started to have some really strange issues with FPS. I first noticed this while playing FFXIV. I was getting < 30 FPS in an area where on the previous drivers i would get ~120 FPS. So at the time my reasonable first solution was to roll-back the drivers. Doing that did not help, as the game would run fine for a while, say 30 minutes up to an hour, at the original FPS. After which point the FPS would drop back down to 30, or in longer gaming sessions <10 FPS. I did also attempt to lower the graphically fidelity of the game, but that did not result in any change in the framerate.

I am having a similar occurance in PUBG as well... However, this situation is more interesting. When in the PUBG lobby, (soon after pc restart/booted up) it would run at a smooth 60 FPS, Then within an hour that would drop down below 10 FPS. However, although the lobby is having major FPS issues (again not solved by down-grading the graphics) The game itself when playing a round, runs over 80 FPS (V-synced to 60).

And having mentioned it in the previous paragraph, I have noticed that upon restarting the computer both PUBG lobby and FFXIV would run at their original FPS before this issue. However after a while of the PC being on (whether I was playing the games or not) the games would still show the same issues. I have also noticed some issues when using Google Chrome

Ultimately what is making me very curious about the whole situation, is that some games are completely unaffected. I just spent an hour and a half in Sniper Elite 4, and the game ran at a solid 60 FPS for the entire time that i was playing it. I noticed no issues in the playing of the game, or through any of the menus. The only other program/game that seems to be showing issues atm is the Unreal Engine, which was running between 10 and 20 FPS.

Hardware (The computer is intended for Game-Dev and Streaming/Video Editing along with Gaming):

    • Intel i7 6700k (not oc)
    • Asus ROG Strix GTX 1080 (not oc)
    • Seagate Barracuda 2TB (where all the games are stored)
    • 32GB of RAM

    What i have tried:

    • Complete clean install of the driver (in this case the more recent 391.35 Drivers) - Done by completely removing all nVidia software from the computer then downloading the driver installer from nVidia's website.
    • Uninstalling nVidia HD Audio Driver and GeForce Experience (as i had seen people mentioning them as issues, and They are easily re-acquired when installing new drivers)
    • Clean installs of the games I was having issues with (FFXIV and PUBG)
    • Checking for windows updates
    • Monitoring CPU/GPU Temps while in and out of game (never getting higher then 60°C on either)
    • Monitoring Clock speeds of CPU/GPU, both of which were hitting their registered Clock/Boost speed.
    • Lowering Graphics settings to their lowest setting - which didnt affect my FPS in anyway in the affected games.
    • Running benchmarks (Unigene Heaven / Furmark) and finding no issues
    • Running the FFXIV specific benchmark and being awarded the highest tier ("Extremely High" iirc - This was ran after closing FFXIV due to the FPS issues)

Any help would be appreicated and if you require more hardware information then please ask.

    Graphics card error (Win 10)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:14 PM PDT

Just now I was playing a game and both monitors started flashing for about 20 seconds, then the game crashed and I got a Windows error saying "There is a problem with your graphics card. Please ensure your card meets the minimum system requirements and that you have the latest drivers installed." On top of that, for about a week, every time I come back to my computer after even just a few minutes' break, my mouse and computer become extremely laggy, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for as long as a few minutes. I'm worried that these issues might be connected. I searched for a fix but was able to find nothing. It could also have to do with my atrocious internet these past few weeks but I feel like that's another topic entirely. I'm on Windows 10, GTX 1070

Second monitor is driving me insane, refuses to play nice and do what I need it to.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:24 AM PDT

Alright, I set up two monitors, both the same kind (HP V242h) yet one is forcibly locked into a smaller 1280x1024 resolution, while the other is at a proper 1920x1080, and typically on the other computer I use, they are both 1920x1080.

I tried to change the resolution in display settings (didn't work), I tried to set custom scaling to 100% (was already there), and I even got to the point where I uninstalled both graphics drivers and restarted the computer. 1920 remained 1920 and still worked, 1280 remained 1280 but now I can't even move my mouse over to that screen, it's just the empty home screen on that one. (The mouse "goes" there, but doesn't show up or anything.)

This is slowly driving me nuts, and I have no idea why it refuses to cooperate, or why Windows 10 can't just let me choose my own resolution from every option instead of going "Nah, we got it, dw my man." then gives me three options all too tiny, and on the second, "Oh, the exact same? Yeah, no, clearly you need something completely different."

Monitor says its getting no signal after my pc crashed playing a game.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:18 AM PDT

So i tried using anther monitor with DVI to my computer that didn't work still no signal. So i thought it must be the computer i then tried my laptop to my main monitor via HDMI and that didn't work either. My mate then suggested i turn the power off for an hour and that did not work either. Both my computer and monitor both turn on just says no signal no matter what i do.

Is "windows boot manager" normal to have in bios?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:47 PM PDT

I did a clean install of windows on my ssd drive for windows and noticed that I still have "windows boot manager" in my bios. My bios drive order lists- windows boot manager (Samsung ssd 960 evo) and Saumsung ssd 960 evo. Is this normal to have the same drive repeated twice but one with "windows boot manager" before the name? Also for some reason in task manager Disk 0 is my D drive and Disk 1 (my ssd for windows) is listed as Disk 1. Thank you for your help!

    Display issue

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:45 PM PDT

Hi, I've got an old Dell Latitude E6500. There's a strange issue where i plug it in to an external monitor, it kinda will show this faint white "refresh rate" type thing. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, but it's kind of noticeable. The color is 32-bit, along with 60Hz which is the highest this monitor can support. The specifications of the laptop will be below, along with the model of my monitor. I've tried multiple Windows reinstalls, along with driver reinstalls. Nothing seems to work.

    Dell Latitude E6500:

    120GB SSD

    4GB of DDR2 RAM

    Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 2.8GHz

    Intel GMA 4500MHD

    Monitor:

    Acer H236HL

    Max supported resolution: 1920x1080

    Edit: Formatting

Edit 2: It just seems like swiggling lines across the monitor, kind of like waves.

Edit 3: I solved it on my own, it was really simple. I changed the mode on the monitor to "Graphics" setting, seems to stopped the issue for now. Will update if it happens again.

Watch them at the highest quality and in full screen as the the youtube compression has made it harder to see. but it is defiantly there. I am using h1z1 as it is the game where it is most noticeable but this happened in every game

    I can't uninstall or re-install Google Drive

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:56 PM PDT

There seems to have been an issue in the latest update of Google Drive (now Google Backup and Restore).

All of a sudden Google Drive had disappeared from my icon tray and nothing in my Drive folder was syncing to or from Google.

After looking around a bit, I noticed that it had updated to Google Backup and Restore, however it had moved from my Program Files (x86) folder to my Program Files folder.

I could launch it manually and it seemed to work, but I wanted to re-install it to the correct (x86) folder (in case what I had was the 32bit version or may cause future problems).

I attempted to uninstall it (modify option was greyed out, fyi) but I kept getting the error basically saying the filepath didn't exist (Program Files (x86)\Google\Update\Install{string of letters and numbers}\gsync.msi) and to locate gsync.msi to uninstall.

I did find an alternative filepath (same pathway but different string or letters & numbers) that contained gsync 64.msi, but attempting to launch that did not work.

I also downloaded a few different gsync.msi files from the Internet and tried those to no luck.

I tried just manually deleting the drive folder, but when I go to re-install from Google's website, it gives the error "Fatal Error 1603".

    What's going on here?

computer crashes or the screen turns green / turning on and off / weird shadows and light flashing while playing games using crossfire especcially on high resolutions.

the issue is very weird and im having a hard time to diagnose it but i believe its a psu issue:

ever since a few months when i play games using crossfire especcially the more demanding ones and especcially on higher resolutions(1080p and more) the lights in the game flash or the screen turns on and off all the time and when in 4k or lesser resolutions (but more 1080p) the game and computer sometimes completely crash after i see greeen colors flashing in the screen. this can happen even when i have high fps although at 4k using crossfire suddently the fps goes to 10 and less even though maybe a resolution less it can run on 120 fps. again this wasnt an issue a few months ago were the same games ran fine.

thanks alot for the help i realise its a weird issue.

if more info is needed write it and ill add it. also i use adapters from us to eu on my psu cable if that may interefere? thanks alot for the help.

what i tried: 1. reinstalling drivers 2. reinstalling windows

Win10 notification center on the taskbar randomly stops losing functions after a while

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 02:28 AM PDT

I run Windows 10 (Home, 64 bit, version 1709 and build 16299.309 apparently) on my laptop. Thing is, I tend to leave it on a lot (that is, I don't restart it completely very often), which usually isn't that much of a problem. However, I've now noticed something that does seem to be an issue, but I don't really understand what makes it happen, so I was hoping you geniuses could help me figure it out?

The problem is that sometimes the various icons in the notification center (the one that pops up when you click the little speech bubble on the taskbar - sorry, I'm not very good with the actual names for stuff, especially not in english...) just disappear or stop working. Among other things, I have shortcuts to adjust screen brightness, and for bluetooth. As of right now, the brightness button is still there, but nothing happens when I click it (I can still change brightness through other methods, though). Also, the bluetooth button is entirely missing and I can't use bluetooth at all. If I go into the bluetooth settings, there isn't a way to turn it on. It's just... missing. Both of these things have happened a couple of times before and it usually fixes itself when I restart the computer, but like I said that's not something I bother with very often, and I've never had this problem before. Bluetooth and brightness are the things I use the most, so I'm not sure if there's an issue with any of the other buttons.

Nothing much has happened with the computer itself lately, other than my dumb ass mistakenly downloading Deamon Tools and getting a whole bunch of "totally not malware" along with it. Most of that, I got rid of with the help of MalwareBytes and Hitman, but I did have some trouble with some kind of Chromium thing that didn't want to go away. None of my antimalware programs picked up on that one (which I understand is common?), but I uninstalled Chromium through Settings/Apps. It then kept giving me messages about there being an update or whatever, so I deleted all files I could find that were related to it. That didn't fix it either, because it later gave me another popup, which I followed to the source (a cryptically named folder that I'd missed) and deleted. Since then it seems okay, so not sure if that's related to this issue I'm having now?

Also, I did mess around a bit with the sound drivers a while back, but I'm pretty sure I restored it to the latest ones in the end, and I'm not sure what the connection would be between sound drivers and screen brightness, for example?

Illustrations: https://imgur.com/a/HgUhb (Notification Center issues) https://imgur.com/a/8mkzK (Bluetooth issues)

If there's any information you need that I haven't provided, feel free to ask. I just wasn't sure what exactly you'd need to figure the thing out :) And like I said, this isn't a super urgent issue seeing as restarting does fix it, but I'd like to know what the problem is at the bottom of it all.

    Weird keyboard problem

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 02:26 AM PDT

I have a few keys not working that are all in different locations (ASUS A55VM laptop):

    c 1 (numpad) 2 (numpad) 3 (numpad) . (numpad) + (numpad) / (numpad) - (numpad)

A keyboard has been replaced with a brand new one by warranty. Then a few months later same exact keys broke.

Warranty fixed them again. And after about 5 month this time all exact same keys stopped working again.

The problem seems to be somewhere else than in a keyboard. Probably motherboard or the connectors.

Any ideas where to look exactly and what to do ?
