Ever play Dope Wars? How would you like to see a modern attempt done?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:00 PM PDT

I've been a huge fan of dope wars since I first discovered i could play games on my ti-83 in high school. Over the years I've learned to develop games, and I'd love to pay homage to a classic, but my mind swims with too many ways to approach it. If any of you are fans and would like to see specific features in your illicit activity simulator, id greatly appreciate it. Forgive me if this isn't the most appropriate sub to ask this in.

5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 49)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:25 AM PDT

Happy Friday! Now that I look back, I realize I played quite a few action games this week - but I hope you won't mind, maybe this week is even your lucky week (if you like action) :)

Am I wrong about these games? Let's have a friendly discussion in the comments.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 48 weeks ago here.

The games games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to it!

Annelids [Game Size: 32 MB] (free)

    Genre: Worms-like / Action / PVP - Online

    tl;dr review:

Singleplayer, online multiplayer, local multiplayer, co-op game-modes, and even controller support - Annelids is truly the "worms for mobile".

The graphics are subpar, but the gameplay is fun and there are always servers to be found with people online. The controls do take some time getting used to, however, as you aim with the same joystick you move around with.

The monetization is great, as there's only a single $1 IAP to remove the ads that appear as a banner in the top of the screen.

Hide Online [Game Size: 92 MB] (free)

Genre: Action / "Prop hunt" / Hide and Seek - Online

    tl;dr review:

A "prop hunt" hide and seek online game where 5 players hide as props (chairs, cheeseburgers, anything!) in a map, whereas the hunters run around with guns and try to find and shoot the props that are players.

The tricky part is that shooting anything that isn't a player makes you lose health as a hunter, and as a prop, you start playing a sound for a few seconds every once in a while, which gives the hunters a hint as to where you're hiding.

The game's fun, runs smoothly and matchmaking is quick, but you can stun hunters as a prop if you use items that you have to either pay or watch ads to get, which does make the game less competitively fair. Still enjoyable in my opinion, though. Any iAP also removes ads.

Hopper [Total Game Size: 114 MB] (free)

    Genre: Glitch Dash-like / Arcade - Offline

    tl;dr review:

A less punishing Glitch Dash-like 40-level indie arcade game where we move from side to side to avoid the plethora of obstacles on our way as our tennis-ball character bounces forward automatically.

I enjoyed the game because of its well-balanced difficulty and monetization that allows us to unlock everything in-game for through playing.

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Ace Academy: Skies of Fury [Total Game Size: 155 MB] (free)

Genre: Dogfight / Flight / Action - Offline

    tl;dr review:

A singleplayer dogfight WW1 game taking place during "Bloody April" where you fight through 50 campaign levels as the Brits, and 50 as the Germans, who each have their own planes for which skins can be unlocked through lootboxes we get from leveling up.

Additional lootboxes can be bought through iAP, and some planes can be unlocked through iAP too, although you should be able to finish the entire campaign with the free planes.

Controls are a bit tricky, and I never really found a way to fully enjoy them, but the art style is lovely (looks like Borderlands or Battle of Arrow), and there's controller support too.

    Google Play: Here

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Hero Academy 2 [Total Game Size: 584 MB] (free)

    Genre: Strategy / Turn-based / Card - Online

    tl;dr review:

This turn-based strategy card game is somewhat unique in that we get to move all of our units at every turn, with each unit having two actions per turn as well - move and/or attack. The goal is to destroy the opponents two crystals while defending your own in both singleplayer and real-time multiplayer matches.

The gameplay is fun, and there are NO lootboxes or chests to unlock. However, all cards have to be crafted using a currency that we get so little of by playing that getting even just a few good cards is going o take a VERY long time! So long that most will probably want to spend money to progress quicker.

This is unfortunate, as the game is rather entertaining.

Get unlimited lives in Homescapes! (And any match-3 game, and nearly any other games on your phone that don't require an internet connection, for that matter.)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:40 PM PDT

I have found a method for getting unlimited lives in Homescapes - I know that this is a very niche market, but this also applies to other games - that is easy to use, quick, and doesn't reset your notifications like changing your time usually does.

    1) Close the game you're playing (for real close it, by pressing the Overview button - the square button on the bottom of your screen and swiping the game to the side). 2) Go into Airplane Mode and go into Settings>>Date and Time and flip Automatic Date and Time to off. Then set it for any time before now. You just can't set it for anything, like, 5 minutes before, or something. You have to set it to at least a few hours before, or the amount of time you have to get to have full lives in the game you're playing. 3) Reopen the game and let it fully load. In Homescapes you should have 19:45 left, or, if you're playing another game, it's the amount of time required to get a new life minus the time it took you to open the game. 4) Close the game again. (A hard close, the same as the one before.) 5) Set your time back to automatic, and get out of Airplane Mode. You have to do it in this order, or else any messages you get between the time you turn off Airplane Mode and when you change your time back to normal will have the time stamp of the day before, or whatever you set it to. 6) Start the game again and enjoy your full lives.

[DEV] My puzzle game released today!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:18 PM PDT

After more than 30 patches 2 years of development with a year of alpha testing and 3 months of beta I finally got to a stable state and release!

Games are random and generated while you play. It has a progression system with more than 150 levels and 10 levels of "classic mode" also features a colorblind mode.

It has achievements, leaderboards, savegames and I made that ads only show if you lose, so good players are rewarded with no-ads.

How to get more stuff faster in Unkilled?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:13 PM PDT

I'm at the point in the game where my 2 3000 power weapons are considered underpowered, and one (the German machine gun) would cost 270,000 to upgrade and the cbj (camo smg thing) would cost 180,000 to upgrade. Any tips on how to get cash faster and/or circumvent this? (Without the whole "lol just don't play the game" response)

[Dev] Careless Carts - A game I've developed using Libgdx and Box2d

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:53 PM PDT

I've just released my first game on Android - Careless Carts

I'd appreciate any feedback or ratings :) I'm relieved to release this game finally, as I have a habit of giving up on projects. It's not the game I wanted it to be when I first started, but I've learnt a lot along the way.

The game itself is made using Libgdx, Rube and Box2d. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. I'm also contemplating releasing the source code, however the code would need some cleaning up first!

I have some better games lined up and I'm excited to show you these in the future. I'll need to set some strict deadlines, otherwise I can procrastinate quite a lot. I'm confident I can make something really good in future. Thanks for your time

Games that im currently playing ;) Anyone else?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:54 PM PDT

For those that like problem solving. Have you tried Gladiabots? I play it since fall 2016 and it is great.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:39 PM PDT

If you like problem solving, gladiabots may be a great game for you. At least it is a great game for me.

In short you have to give your team an heuristic "how to fight" and send them to battle. If the heuristic is better than the enemy team, you win, otherwise you lose. Back to the drawing board and try again. The challenge is to make an heuristic that doesn't lose.

The single player is nice and could last some hours but what I find awesome is the multiplayer. I am playing it since fall 2016 and it never ends to be challenging due to new players and old players improving (plus the game is improving every 4-6 months). I played some 9000 ranked games, although there are few players that played more, way more (up to 28k games at the moment).

Be careful! The multiplayer is not that easy. Many people gets frustrated that they have to think a bit more than expected and they cannot solve everything with a little battle plan.

The game teaches "to swallow losses". If you want to try the multiplayer, don't have huge expectations from day 1. Take your time. There is a player -mrchris - that at the moment is a pain in the back, but for the first 7000 games he struggled to reach the top. That is a great example that works way better than many /r/getmotivated posts. Persist, try to learn lessons, and eventually you will succeed.

Now you may think "ah great, another game where one has to grind to reach the top". Not at all. One can think of it like chess (sort of, I am not sure which one is more complex). In theory if you are great you need to spend some time to make a good heuristic and then dominate from day 1. In practice, well, a lot of games, experience and observations helps. I, for one, use ranked games as testing games. The best way to fix my heuristic. Points come and go until the heuristic is stable.

For example there is mrchris that played 28k games and since he passed the 7000-8000 mark he is in top10. Another player played 22k games, but he floats always in top40 (although he shows a lot of commitment). So just playing a lot is not enough.

For a first introduction look here: https://wiki.gladiabots.com/index.php?title=Main_Page . Though the wiki has some parts outdated that we should change (we = gladiabots community).

I want to mod custom maps into a game

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:28 AM PDT

That's the gist of it. Specifically want to start making custom skateparks on Trueskate, probably by using existing maps as a template and editing the objects inside it.

I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to breaking into an app and injecting files, and getting them to accept the new files as compatible.

If anybody has any resources I could read to learn this better I'd greatly appreciate it
