$900-$1200 Portable 1080p Laptop for Gaming and College Life Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:06 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $1200 max, I can buy it in the Philippines or in the US/shipped to a relative's home address in LA. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Maybe the best specifications for the money How important is weight and thinness to you? Would like a 15.6 inch screen laptop or smaller for portability. Not so picky on weight and thinness just as long as I won't have trouble bringing it around like a 17.3 inch screen laptop that I had previously Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please. 10 Home edition would be what I would need the most as I'm familiar with this interface. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. As mentioned above, 15.6 inch or smaller Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I play lots of FPS/Milsims like CS:GO, CoD, Tom Clancy's GRW, R6: Siege, PUBG and I'm awaiting titles/releases such as Far Cry 5, Ready or Not (SWAT series reboot), Insurgency: Sandstorm and Battlefield 2018 if it is in a modern-ish setting. Will possibly purchase games like Squad, GTA V, Metal Gear V (both) and/or Arma III If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -fill here, remove dashes- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 2/3 USB 3.0/3.1 ports (mouse and keyboard and possibly a harddrive to link to where I can watch movies), HDMI cable (for monitor linked here), therefore I will not really be needing G-SYNC as I will be docking this to a 1080p monitor at home. For build quality, I just hope this will survive me my 4/5 years of college being brought around in a backpack and my future trips abroad/locally/roadtrips in the same timeframe. I would be needing a 1 TB hard drive and it would be preferable if this came with at least a 128 GB SSD. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will be docking this laptop to an ethernet cable, mouse, mechanical keyboard, a monitor and a cooling pad when at home and I would want a decent wifi card as I will be bringing the laptop around when I go to school on select days. Currently, I have done my own research so far and I have come up with my top 3 choices in order with the combination of parts and the money to be spent as main factors in this selection: 1) A GTX 1060 6GB with an i5 7300HQ 2) A GTX 1050 Ti 4GB with an i7 7700HQ that is currently $130 less 3) A GTX 1060 3GB with an i7 7700 HQ that is on sale as well as option 2 but $100 more than my first option (and has G-SYNC that I will not take advantage of) with these choices I have #1 as the winning one and 2/3 are in no order but I am afraid that the i5 7300 HQ will hold back the performance of my GTX 1060 6GB with the games I play/future games I will acquire and this is what is keeping me from pulling the trigger. I would welcome more laptop suggestions with the above budget and specifics mentioned above submitted by /u/PyrusZodiac [link] [comments] |

Looking for all around, durable laptop Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:06 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is around 600-800$ in united states Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer long lasting battery with moderate specs . Im not to interested in the 2 in one factor. How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is slightly important because I'll carry this to class, but this is not a priority at all compared to desired internal specs and battery. I'll be in college so I can carry a heavy laptop if it comes to that. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anywhere between 13"-15.6", Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be an computer science major so mostly programing but will use some game development tools not shure what those are yet. In terms of games im not a hardcore gamer so games like world of tanks, hearthstone and maybe some light fps games If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I haven't played pc games since early 2012 so i dont know how games have improved and evolved but moderate gaming and low graphic heavy games on moderate settings with fps at 40 plus should be fine. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Here is a list of things i would like on the laptop 1.) Long lasting: i want this laptop to last me a while which might be a stretch but if possible durable build 2.) Long battery life: i dont have a lot of places to charge and use the laptop so a long battery would be important 3.) Wifi: i dont use a ether net cable so wifi is my only option, im not shure if that is a problem or not 4.) Moderate in terms of weight: i would like light or mid weight laptop around or under 4lbs but i can compromise on weight for better specs 5.) Warranty: not exactly a computer spec but i dont want this to break and be out a couple hundred bucks so a warranty is a must submitted by /u/lilcali21 [link] [comments] |

$800-1200 (Php40k-60k), Philippines, about to go to first year of college as materials engineering undergraduate Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:59 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase:
Budget is flexible but hopefully just around $1000, although extending to $1200 is possible if the additional specs are worth it. Philippines
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
This is a toss up between good battery life and specifications for the money. I want good specs, of course, but if battery life is compromised, then I'll pass. I don't really like 2-in-1s because of the battery compromise, and I don't see a use for them as of the moment.
- How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight is slightly important because I'll carry this to class, but this is not a priority at all compared to desired internal specs and battery. I'll be in college so I can carry a heavy laptop if it comes to that.
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Windows 10 Home, cuz Pro is probably not worth the expense for features that I might not use
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Anywhere between 13"-15.6", but like weight, this is not a priority at all
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'll be an engineering undergrad, but honestly I don't know the software that I'll be needing yet. I will probably do some basics of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, then some other apps like VCarve and Inkscape. There might be some coding as well. Not too fancy though, so there is probably no need for an HQ series of CPU. It is possible that I need some video and photo editing software, but just basic ones.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'll probably do some light gaming, with MOBAs such as LoL and HotS, and some others. I haven't had proper exposure to PC games before cuz I never owned one so I honestly have no idea, but I'm pretty sure that I don't need my games to be run at max settings.
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I have compiled a bit of specs that I want in my laptop: - Intel Core i7-8xxxU series for maximum performance without sacrificing battery life as it happens with the HQ series
- Nvidia GTX MX150 is a good enough GPU for me, and I wanted it to be discrete
- at least 256 GB PCIe SSD because it's 2018
- at least 8 GB RAM
These are the requirements. Now, for the desires: - at least 1 Thunderbolt 3 connector for futureproofing and should I decide to buy an eGPU, I'll be able to use it here. In general, I want more ports
- fingerprint scanner, because I'm used to biometric security on my phone
- bright, matte screen, because I don't want touch screen anyway, so might as well not get glare issues from glossy screens
good keyboard and touchpad, with backlight on the keyboard as a bonus Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. First of all, I am not buying this immediately. If there are upcoming ones that fit my criteria, then I might jump to those. However, I want to buy one within the end of the year, hopefully when college starts, so I did my research early. I did my own kinda extensive research, of course, and now I am stuck with quite a few models: 1. Lenovo IdeaPad 720s - has almost everything that I want but it has a glossy screen and reports of heat issues. 2. Asus ZenBook UX430UN and UX331UN - virtually identical except for the screen size, they are both good as well but neither have a Thunderbolt 3 and they have heat issues as well. 3. HP Envy 13 - one of the better designed ones in this list (and I love that clever hinge), but it also has no Thunderbolt 3 and the opinions on its speakers are mixed. It's also a glossy touch screen but battery reviews say that it's solid, so I can't complain. 4. Acer Aspire 15 E5-576G-81GD - probably the biggest on my shortlist, no Thunderbolt 3 and a slightly dim display put it lower on the list for me. This is the shortlist that I made, with honorable mentions such as Asus Vivobook S15UN, Acer Swift 3, Acer Nitro 5 Spin, Lenovo ThinkPad T480 (too expensive!), and Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G. I also have to consider availability of the exact configuration in the Philippines. Are there any laptops that I missed? Are there upcoming laptops to wait for? Which one should I pick? Also, feel free to refine my requirements list; I have no prior experience with laptops so I don't really know what I want submitted by /u/shampoo1751 [link] [comments] |

Is Intel Hades Canyon NUC ( RX Vega M + Kaby lake-G) a viable option as a college laptop replacement ? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:49 PM PDT The Hades Canyon NUC recently started on pre-orders and seeing the reviews and benchmarks, it seems like a really good machine. It has more than enough ports, well managed thermals and a performance that is nearly as good as a 1060 Max Q, all the things I was looking for in a laptop. So, is it a good idea to get it for 4-year college as a laptop replacement ? ( Moreover, if anyone's from India then please share your experience with having a desktop PC in college dorm room { whether it's safe/viable/sensible to have one instead of a laptop} ). submitted by /u/Momo_Senpai07 [link] [comments] |

Need a laptop for school Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:50 PM PDT Next year I'll be starting college. I'll be a biology or chemistry major (undecided lol) on the pre-med path and won't really be involved with engineering or anything. As far as what's important for me, I want something pretty portable (lighter weight, but this is definitely not a huge deal) and I may lightly game (FIFA mostly) and get into EDM production (so not a smaller size probably, but still should be in backpack comfortably). The budget I'm looking at is really anything under $1200ish, but open to options up to even $1500. I want to make this a smart investment, but I'm not entirely sure where to go from here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Edit: I live in the US submitted by /u/JakeRuse [link] [comments] |

Good Keyboard and Build quality. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. £500-600, trying to replace a desktop PC for space reasons! Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:41 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: £500-600, £650 at an absolute stretch, UK. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Almost exclusively to be used at home, so battery life and 2 in 1 form factor are not important, the highest specs possible are. How important is weight and thinness to you? While I will almost always be using it at home, I do travel enough that I don't want anything ridiculously heavy and thick - I'm also pretty stupid and like aesthetically pleasing things so thin is good. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm going to be running Elementary on it for a while at first, maybe going back to Windows for gaming/video editing if I can't adjust to Linux alternatives. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Higher image quality and brighter is more important than size, N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some video editing (after effects, just for a hobby so it doesn't need to be insanely powerful but competent would be good) and perhaps some very light gaming (Hearthstone, Paradox games (EU4, HOI4)) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Honestly not a huge concern, I rarely play AAA high end titles. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality, display quality and if possible, tactile keyboard are things I'm looking for. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm moving house to a much smaller space and I'm selling my desktop PC and reducing to a laptop to save on space somewhat. So in a sense this needs to replace a fairly powerful desktop but I recognise that I won't get the same performance as I could on a desktop for the same price. I'd rather buy new but if there's something that is absolutely perfect that only falls in my price range on the resale market I'm open to it. As I'm moving from a mechanical keyboard and really nice monitor, a good display and keyboard are honestly more important than any other thing that might be tacked on. Huge bonus to something beautifully designed, but again I understand really pretty laptops only seem to be at the £1k+ price (i.e. XPS 13 which is gorgeous). Thanks in advance for your help guys, sorry for the ramble-y answers to the form. submitted by /u/Constantijne [link] [comments] |
