Scripts I use to remove Windows 10 and Nvidia bloatware - what can be improved ?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:22 AM PST

This one comes from a fellow redditor. Wish I could give credit, but I don't recall who - there's an email adress on the Google Doc page.

This one I call Turbo. It stops a bunch of unnecessary services.

This one is used to clean Nvidia drivers.

Edit: Wow. Really wasn't expecting so much condescension on a support forum. Just looking for advice and to learn.

'The Feature You Are Trying To Use Is On A Network Resource That Is Unavailable'

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 02:58 AM PST

    Hi All,

I'm hoping you can help me with this issue I've been having whilst trying to start-up Skyrim SE for the first time. Now usually I thought I had good Google Fu skills and have managed to solve my technical issues on my own however with this issue everything that I have seen that has been recommended has done nothing.

I've re-downloaded Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 as I believed that it may have been an issue regarding this, once that failed I uninstalled and tried again however that led to nothing. I made sure the Windows Installer was running and I tinkered around in the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products hoping that once I restarted my computer it would install/update the file that was unavailable however whilst something did install/update it didn't appear to be the correct file that was needed.

I feel like I've exhausted all of my options that I can think of, all of the easy ones anyway, I hope one of you guys could help me get this resolved ASAP as I'm off work for the next two days and I haven't had my Skyrim fix in about 6 months.

Here's a link to what I've been seeing on first-start up of Skyrim.

    Cheers.

(I've also discovered today that this same issue is affecting Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 which I bought for the first time yesterday.)

    RAID 0 Issues

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 10:36 PM PST

Hi everyone, I've got a quick question. I have a Windows-based RAID 0 ("Storage Spaces") array. I turned off my computer and unplugged both of the 1TB drives, because I needed the slots temporarily for another purpose. I completed that, shut down the computer, and re-connected the drives. However, now, Windows doesn't recognize a drive, and disk management says they're missing/failed. It's INCREDIBLY unlikely that it failed, as it would have been far too much of a convenient time, and they're both drives around a year old. I know the dangers of RAID 0, this was just a RAID drive for Steam games, so nothing is truly lost if they're gone, but it would be nice not to spend a couple days re-downloading a couple TB. Regardless. I try to use "reactivate volume" in Disk Management, and nothing happens. They show up fine in BIOS, which only adds to the evidence that both drives work fine and Windows is just confused. Anyone that can help?

    Windows 10

    i7 4790K

    GTX 1080

    16GB 2133MHz RAM

Samsung 850 Evo SSD Boot Drive

EDIT: Hmm, looking at it in DiskPart shows something strange https://i.imgur.com/cZNfFOK.png

The two drives labeled "foreign" are my RAID drives. It looks like they're also the ones labeled as "Missing", considering I only have a total of 5.

EDIT 2: So I think I've made progress. Maybe. Not sure. I used a tool I found called PTEDIT32. I changed some values in there, and after restarting a couple times, both drives show up as working, just unallocated. So both hard drives work, Windows just doesn't recognize them as the ones that should have been in the RAID array, which is what it seemed like at first. https://i.imgur.com/eMLvJQJ.png

EDIT 3: Fixed it! I set the values back to default in PTEDIT32, and went to Disk Management, right clicked on the "Foreign Disks", selected "Import Foreign Disks", and clicked okay. It brought them back online and everything works great.

Do ISP's put internet speed tests on the "fast track"? What stops them from doing so?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 05:47 PM PST

I've always noticed that my internet speed test results are much better than the actual realized throughput of my internet network. Is there any explanation for this?

How to block the download of certain file extensions using Windows Firewall

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 11:08 PM PST

Ok so I'm using 4K Stogram to download images and videos from Instagram. The problem is that the option for "only download photos" isn't working. The "only videos" one works but trying the photos one, it still ends up downloading videos from that account.

Is there a way to temporarily block .mp4 file extension files to be downloaded on my PC so 4K Stogram ends up downloading only the images. Is it possible?

Till now I've been using jDownloader2 and it has a videos filter but it doesn't give me good down speeds and hangs up from time to time.

Any help will be appreciated even if it's a different kind of solution (still involving 4K Stogram tho). Thank you.

P.S: Is there some other related sub where I can ask about this specific question?

Windows Store - apps not showing "in library"

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:32 AM PST

I have a very weird problem with the Windows Store... certain apps do not show "in library" when signed in. Only when i sign out of my microsoft account do they show up. It makes no sense. I've uninstalled/reinstalled them. A specific one is Dolby Access. It does say i own this product yet it doesnt show.

    Here's some screenshots...

    When signed in: https://imgur.com/a/l0vua

    After i sign out: https://imgur.com/a/7d1uC

How does this make any sense? I am only signed into the windows store exclusively, im still using a local account on my pc.. does that make a difference? It shouldn't, because i downloaded Sound Recorder yesterday and it showed up in my library just fine.

    Buggy Windows 10

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 02:11 AM PST

Every time I reinstall Windows 10, after 3-6 months it becomes buggy and sluggish. Desktop rearranges for no apparent reason, Edge and Store icons became invisble on taskbar, chrome broke completely, start button does not work first few seconds after boot and it feels unresponsive(At the time of writing this my pictures started looking like this). I do not have any of these problems First 3 months even with all of my programs installed. I turned off almost all of the startup programs with Autoruns. Also, my pc is pretty bad (g1610, 6gb ram, gt610, win 10 1709). I have to dual boot with Windows 7 on 500 GB HDD in case Windows 10 does not want to work. What do I do to fix that?

How to change date format in Windows 10 to dd-mm-yyyy?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 07:22 PM PST

Basically, I can't find any option to change the date in Windows 10 to a numerical dd-mm-yyyy format. There is dd-MMM-yy, but that used the month's name rather than its number. Is there any way to get the right format?

Edit: I've found it. "Region and Language Settings" > "Additional Date, Time and Regional Settings" > "Change Date, Time, or Number Formats" > "Additional Settings" > "Date." This gets you to a point where you can manually edit the date format. That was unnecessarily complex to get to what frankly is a pretty standard format.

    Gmail account repeated unauthorized access

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 05:53 PM PST

Hi, I have a Gmail account that is being accessed usually twice a day at random times from a location and device I am not affiliated with. I have changed my password multiple times from two different devices, ensuring I have a strong password. 2 step authentication is enabled with my cellphone number. I have a security question and secondary email. I do not understand how someone is regaining access to my account after several password resets. I assumed my PC may have a virus. So I reset my password with another laptop with the same result. This is worrisome because my Gmail has passwords saved for multiple important websites that I believe this person has access to. My financial accounts have no activity so far but I would like to resolve this issue. If anyone has any recommendations or similar experience with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Edit: The IP address is for DC (USA) but the last few digits of IP are different with each log in.

    Internet problems

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:34 AM PST

Hi, i moved to a new place and having problems with the internet on my laptop. - I use wifi for both my laptop and mobile, however webpages that open perfectly fine on my iphone doesn't open on my laptop and instead get either a white screen/ loading then time out/ load with words only (cut picture and color). - Some webpages for example youtube never have trouble loading and will load 100% of the time, however the twitch website will frequently not load. - This also applies to games, games do no start up. - What i noticed was that at the beginning of laptop start up anything works for a couple of minutes. So my current solution when i need to open an important webpage/game is to restart my laptop then open it quickly. - The internet is working perfectly, only my laptop is having problems. Any help would be appreciated -laptop model acer predator G9-593 -internet connection is most likely adsl

Is it possible to back up installed programs before a full system restore? (Possible gpu compatibility issue?) [Windows 10 revert to 7]

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:33 AM PST

Hey all. A while back I installed Windows 10 on my Inspiron N7110 laptop without paying much attention to its compatibility. I have a desktop that I normally use so I haven't messed around much on the laptop, but I'm on vacation right now with the laptop and am having doubts about my decision. Everything runs fine, but I feel like my GPU (Integrated HD3000 - no Win10 driver) is having issues. Certain games seem choppy or slow, although as stated I don't use it much so I wasn't able to test before and this could just be the pc showing its age.

I was thinking I would just revert back to Win7 but apparently there's only a 30 day period for that which has long passed. I would need to do a full restore to get Win7 off of the recovery disk, but I don't have stable internet where I am and I'm trying to avoid losing the games and programs I have downloaded. Would it be possible to shove them onto my external hard drive and put them back after the restore?

Or am I just overthinking this? Is the Windows 10 generic driver good enough and it's just the laptop showing its age?

    Micro SD card not working

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:23 AM PST

Hello, I have a micro SD that is inside an adapter plugged into my laptop. It shows up when plugged in, however the storage is not shown, and then it disappears after ~2 mintues. Nothing happens when I open it either.

I have been trying to sort this for days, I've tried 'chkdsk' in CMD, but it doesn't display anything until ~2 minutes later when the card stops working.

I have looked online for ways to fix it, however nothing has worked. I have come here for help. (I don't care about any files on the card. There is nothing on it)

Need help, Windows File Explorer freezing and crashing can't access any files

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 05:32 PM PST

Hi, as title says every time I try to access files, the window freezes completely, then when I click close the whole screen flickers (the windows bar disappears really quick and comes back). If I go to my Microsoft Word recent files, I can access those files like that, but I can't go anywhere into the file explorer. If I try to "save as", for example, it will freeze as soon as the explorer window pops up. Any ideas?

Samsung TV cuts off edges of things connected to it by HDMI.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:06 AM PST

Bought a used Samsung LA40R71BD. Picture is great (was the only thing I checked before forking over money) however the thing cuts off my display vertically and horizontally when connected to my laptop via HDMI cable. I fiiddled around with all sorts of settings in my Nvidia control panel to no success. It also cuts off the sides (and possibly the top and bottom? Can't remember) of my Nintendo Switch when that is hooked up. The TV doesn't appear to have a "fit to display" option when toggling P. Size, just 4:3, 16:9, and zoom. Any ideas on how to pursue this? It's frustrating beyond belief and I may end up just reselling the thing if I can't get to the bottom of it.

    Thanks!

Computer randomly restating or compete turning off ( Without the windows shutdown, straight power out)

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 10:05 PM PST

This has only recently returned as for the a while the problem had gone dormant. I suspect it's my power source but I'm not sure. The computer will just loose power at random moments, only begins to occur after a few hours of use. It has no warning and has no process, just simply turns right off or restarts.

Tried to trade C: drives of two computers, failed, now power supply makes weird noise and one fan isnt working?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:15 AM PST

We have two computers and tried to trade the C: drives with each other, so we put C: drive from one pc into the other one, and took that pcs C: drive and put in the first one. It didn't work out so we put them back to their original computers, but now one fan isn't working and the power supply was making a weird noise but it stopped after a while, although it is still making a different noise right now it is not as sharp and sounds pretty natural. And when I wobble/shake the computer, the weird noise stops for a while but then comes back.

Is this something that I should be concerned about or is everything fine? And how do I get my fan to start working again?

    External Devices not properly functioning

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:00 AM PST

Hello, I am currently facing problems with some of my external devices connected to my Acer Laptop.

System info is as follows: Manufacturer: Acer Model: Aspire E5-571G System type: Windows 10, 64-bit Operating System, x64 based processor.

The problem arises when I plug in my external mouse and keyboard. The keyboard complete doesn't work, the mouse works however the accompanying software with my mouse doesn't detect my mouse therefore configurations I set up for my mouse become unusable.

Here is how they look in device manager: https://imgur.com/YNjNuyf https://imgur.com/CKsqgTk https://imgur.com/EACeE61

I have tried updating driver: https://imgur.com/o2bwwHl

HOWEVER, I have tried accessing the bios and while in the bios the external keyboard functions normally. When I exit the bios the external keyboard stops functioning again. My Windows is up-to-date, and sofar I have tried my mouse with another device and it functions normally.
