Windows Failing to Boot without first going through recovery media Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:33 PM PST This is for my Windows 10 machine. A few days ago I went to boot my machine after an update and it refused to boot. The BIOS splash screen would come up, screen would then go black (at which point the windows loading screen would normally come up) and machine would restart back to the BIOS splash screen. I popped in my recovery media USB, went to startup repair, and it failed to do anything. But then when I rebooted from the startup media the machine boots fine. Once the machine has booted up, I can reboot just fine. But if I either shutdown the machine or let the machine go to sleep, when I go to turn it on or wake it up the same issue occurs. So right now to boot up my machine from being powered off (or waking it up from sleep) I boot in to the recovery media, and then just tell it to "Continue to Windows 10" and it boots up fine. Obviously this is pretty obnoxious, but short of a complete reinstall I'm not sure how to fix whatever startup issue is happening. Any input would be appreciated [link] [comments]
I accidentally deleted the Bluetooth driver on my computer. Please help. Posted: 24 Feb 2018 05:17 PM PST Hi, I was attempting to use a wireless ps3 controller with my HP Pavilion running windows 10. While doing so, I deleted the Bluetooth driver on my computer, and now the toggle to turn Bluetooth on is missing. I have gone into the device manager trying to update the driver, but there is no longer a section for Bluetooth. Please help me. [link] [comments]

Question about Intel Meltdown and Spectre bugs Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:30 PM PST My pc has an intel core i5 4th gen haswell cpu. (4670) my MacBook Pro has a 5th gen broadwell intel cpu. Aside from updating my windows software and Mac OS software and keeping the OS's up to date, is there anything else I should do to prevent these intel bugs? Are there any patches to download, and if so how do I know which ones or if I already have them?Meltdown and Spectre?) Did 4th and 5th gen intel cpus even get a patch from intel or are they too old? I heard 4th gen didn't. How big of a problem are meltdown and Spectre? Thanks [link] [comments]

Windows 10 Update High CPU Usage Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:11 PM PST Ever since Windows 10 forced me to update to the newest build, a lot of programs seem to be using more CPU usage than before. I've updated my BIOS and looked to see if there were any driver updates from Intel and there weren't any. It is quite annoying when I spike to 100% usage and my computer freezes when trying to play games. I don't really want to do a fresh install do to all the stuff I have on my computer. Is there anyway to fix my issue? [link] [comments]

Confusion about installing...? Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:05 PM PST Hey everyone! Right now I'm running Windows 10 on my desktop. It has one 60GB SSD and one 2TB Hard Drive. Lately, I've been running into so many problems due to the fact that some programs will not let me choose the 2TB drive to install onto, so now the SSD is full. I would like to reinstall Windows onto the 2TB Hard Drive right now. However, I already have 1TB worth of files on it. Is it possible to install Windows on to this drive without formatting it and losing my information? Also how would I move the drivers from my 60GB SSD to the HDD once I'm done? How would that work? If I can't do this, will I have to backup my HDD by taking a clone or imaging it? Once I install the OS, will imaging it back give my data back? Thank you all in advance for helping me out :D [link] [comments]
How do I manually install a single windows update? Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:44 PM PST For example if I'm downloading windows updates in the settings app, and one fails to install, how do I manually force it to retry? [link] [comments]
Delaying "Fall Creators Update". Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:12 PM PST I dont want to update my OS, so i delayed the update as far as possible, the time is out, and i can only manage to change "active hours", the thing is, when I start the PC In a non active hour, Windows shows the tipical "Update in X mins". However, if the PC was already on before the non active hour comes, it does not display any message and automaticly restarts. I saw there are ways to disable restart deadline with group policies (or disablig Windows Update). Is there any way to prevent the PC from restarting with group policies or however? Thanks. Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:49 PM PST My school was giving away computers and I got an HP Compaq Elite 8300 Small Factor for free and it has Windows 7 Pro loaded on it. It has a Intel Core i5-3570 Processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB Hard Drive and Intel HD Graphics 2500. I don't plan on using this as a gaming PC and this is my first time using a PC because I have been a Mac user all my life so any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
Is it possible to create a full and complete backup? Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:23 AM PST Here's a very noobish question, but after my Samsung Evo 850 SSD died this week completely out of the blue, I ofcourse started looking more into backups. I was using this SSD as my C, and my last backup was made using AOMEI Backupper on the 1st of February. When the SSD died (I bought it less than 2 months ago) I brought my computer to the shop and was able to get a replacement. But I found out that the backup that I made was an image, and you still need to first install Windows completely over on the new drive before you can install this image. My question now is, is it possible to actually create a full backup of Windows? I know it's possible to clone a drive, but you'd need a second drive for that, and you would need to first clear the second drive before you can create another clone/backup of your system. Again, I'm very sorry for this noobish question, but I already effed up once now, and I'm not looking forward to doing that again. [link] [comments]

Is it possible to disable thumbs.db for individual folders/sub-folders? Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:35 AM PST Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer this question. I appreciate being able to view photo libraries as thumbnails in Explorer and various explorer-based GUIs (so simply disabling thumbnail view or thumbs.db caching isn't an option), but I would prefer not having thumbs.db files in all my other folders. Is there a way to disable thumbnails in specific folders, so I don't end up with useless thumbs.db files everywhere? [link] [comments]
Is windows sharing potentially dangerous ? Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:04 PM PST I've noticed today that my whole user folder was being shared and while I thought I had disabled it on the network settings, sharing was indeed on. I have zonealarm, windows firewall and avast. I immediately disabled sharing but I'm wondering about any potential dangers ? I also unshared my user folder but I'm not sure where the shared information was stored before ? Do i need to do any additionnal safety steps ? [link] [comments]

How to run .bat files on windows 2016 server on EC2, after python has been configured? Posted: 24 Feb 2018 11:32 AM PST I need to kick off a python script on 2016 windows server EC2 instance on AWS. When I set the task up in 'task scheduler' the script does not run. I have tried setting up a batch file with the following code: I get the following error when I double click the batch file: I am running python 3.6 on anaconda in the windows environment in which my script runs fine. I have also downloaded python 3.6 from the python website and confirmed the path variables exist. Also pandas works in anaconda. batch filename: Not sure why my libraries not being read in? Sidegrade fixed my Windows Defender problem! Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:33 AM PST For a couple weeks I've been having a problem that has really stumped me: Windows Defender's services refused to start, and all Windows Updates related to Windows Defender definitions would instantly fail when trying to install them. But the problem went beyond Windows Defender, oddly enough. Both BitDefender and McAfee would occasionally complain about being unable to activate their real-time scanning engines. Sometimes they'd work, sometimes they wouldn't, and both products exhibited exactly the same behavior in this regard. I'd attempted numerous common ways to resolve this, including sfc /scannow and the DISM /Online /RestoreHealth command. I also reset Windows Update, removed all the cached Windows Updates, re-registered all the Windows Update DLLs, updated the servicing stack, and did a Disk Cleanup and removed Delivery Optimization Files. No joy. But then, I realized something. I have recently tried two different Insider builds (one Slow ring, one Fast ring) and ended up reverting back to v1709 stable when I ran into problems. But those problems were unrelated; the Windows Defender and McAfee/BitDefender problems did not come up at all on the Insider builds. ... Hmm. It was almost as if the process of upgrading Windows was fixing my issue, even without reinstalling or "refreshing" the OS. Hmm. Then it occurred to me: I'd heard folks talk about upgrading from and to the same build of Windows before. I'd never really understood what the purpose of this was, and part of me thought (a) Eh, Windows won't let me even try to do this, or (b) It's unlikely to fix the problem I'm having, anyway. Wrong, and wrong! What I did is download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft, then just went through the process as if I wanted to update my Windows build. Except that I'm already on the latest v1709, so there's no newer build to upgrade me to. Amusingly, the Media Creation Tool didn't seem to care, and happily allowed me to "upgrade". I wonder if anyone has ever gotten confused about this and done the same upgrade 3, 4, 5 times in a row thinking they were getting "more upgraded" each time. :P Anyway, whatever the Windows 10 build upgrade code is doing, none of the existing troubleshooting/repair tools are performing the same checks or making the same repairs that the upgrade does. My problem is now fixed; Windows Defender and definition updates work; and both McAfee and BitDefender don't complain about their real-time scanning being disabled. By the way, I don't use McAfee and BitDefender together at the same time. I've just uninstalled one then installed the other as a means of trying to troubleshoot the problems I've had with virus scanning over the past weeks. The neat thing about this whole process is I got to keep all my installed applications and settings. So, if you've ever had a problem with a core Windows component, dism and sfc didn't fix it, and you're just about to reinstall, hold that thought and try a sidegrade to the same version of Windows using the Media Creation Tool. It really does work. I just wish Microsoft would build in some sort of "help me try to fix my existing Windows install without reinstalling" tool into Settings (maybe under Troubleshooting?) that would perform the same functionality as a sidegrade, without using the Media Creation Tool. Usually when someone has a problem with their computer and they know they're already running the latest build of Windows, upgrading is the last thing they'd think of trying. [link] [comments]
