Stolen laptop - need help gathering evidence

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:22 PM PST

My laptop was stolen yesterday, and today someone put a suspiciously similar laptop for sale on eBay. I wouldn't normally think too much of it but the pictures seem to reveal some distinct scratches that were on my laptop. I want to try and verify if it's my laptop, though, without having to buy it (because if I contact the seller and they recognize me as the original owner of the stolen laptop it won't end well). It's a Dell Inspiron 5000, and I don't have its serial number. Any suggestions? Are there any distinguishing features I could use?

Buying a cheap, yet decent laptop for a friend

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:45 PM PST

I'm terrible at buying laptops, I'm more of a "build your own desktop" person. Well I have a friend, who doesn't have a laptop, and it's really made the majority of his college career hard. He has a desktop in his dorm, but I've noticed in our classes, sometimes we need to bring a laptop, and he's SOL.

So what I'm looking for is a cheap laptop for him so he can do school work and it be portable. My budget is $100-$400 (maybe a little over $400). The most important thing is that he can have a durable and portable laptop that he can type on, keep a schedule on, and do basic work/school activities.

As a bonus, I'd also like to get him a laptop that could run WoW and LoL, so he wouldn't have to take his desktop home every time he goes home. This isn't a requirement, but if I could find a laptop that could run those well in that price range and still be good for school, I'd appreciate it. Thank you in advance!

I'm in dire need of a laptop for college

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 10:11 AM PST

Hi guys, my first time in here. I was wondering if you guys could help me find a laptop that is able to run programs like CATIA and Solidworks neatly. I'm not so sure abou the budget, because there are a lot of taxes in brazil, so converting from BRL to Dollars is not a thing, but I'm looking for a notebook that has a price similar to the i5 7200u 4gb Ideapad 320 from Lenovo. (A quick search got me around $400 but I'm not sure)

I'm also not so sure if I should go for Intel or AMD, so I would like help with that too.

Anyways, any help that I get here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    I need advice!!!

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:15 AM PST

I need advice as the title shows. I'm being offered two products that I am very interested in for the same price. The first one is a surface pro 4 I7 256gb with type 4 keyboard but no pen. The other is a 2017 MacBook Pro 13" I5 128gb. Which one should I go with? Anyone have experience with either? I like the Mac battery life but the specs of the pro better. I'm a college student about to graduate studying computer science. Thank you.

Clevo laptop control center causing crashes, will registry editing remove keyboard function?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 11:40 AM PST

I have a Eluktronics N850HP6, and based on my searching, it seems the Control Center program common to Clevo laptops causes occasional BSODs while gaming. While it happens on average once every few days of gaming for me, I would prefer 100% reliability.

I heard removing the HKKbdFltr line from "UpperFilters" part of the registry solves it, but I also heard one user report they lost keyboard function from doing this. It seems to me that particular user edited the registry wrong. But just to settle my fears, has anyone done what I mentioned and used the keyboard without issue?

LF advices about upgrading my laptop's HDD

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 10:59 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $60 , USA

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Should be a 2.5" HDD

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Win10

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Everything

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? All the games...

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The current HDD that I have since I bought my Laptop (since 4 years ago) is ( WD Blue 500GB Mobile Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM SATA 3 Gb/s 2.5 Inch - WD5000BPVT) Reasons why I need to get a new HDD: Not enough space This one is really slow now, slow windows start, slow programmes and games start Games load slow, sometimes crashes for no reason Heard the reason why games crashes is HDD so I thought why not change it! Thanks a lot

Will the battery life of a laptop degrade over time if the laptop have never been used?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 02:41 PM PST

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question.

Considering buying an Early 2015 MacBook that is still sealed and never used. Considering it's ~3 years old now, will the battery still have the same overall life as it did when it was first manufactured? Do those degrade simply from sitting around?

    Thanks!

EDIT: Meant has in title, not have

Friend needs a good laptop, I'm honestly at a loss what to recommend to her

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 07:34 AM PST

Hi. Her criteria is that it must have:

    • a good build quality ( so that it'll last )
    • good battery
    • 15" screen
    • that she can run older games ( like Sims ). She likely won't play anything released since 2012/2013, and non-demanding titles at that, so graphics is not that important.

She's basically going to be using it for internet, word and watching movies, most of the time.

New Dell XPS 13 8th Gen (9370) vs Macbook pro 13"2016

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 11:59 AM PST

    Hey guys,

So basicaly I'm torn between these 2 laptops, I will be studying computer science and learning mostly front end stuff on the side when I'll have time (web, mobile) + maybe some Age of Empire 2 HD. As of now, the newest Dell XPS 13 is actually cheaper for me than a refurbished 2016 Macbook pro 2016 lol (both models come with 256 ssd and an i5).I'm currently using a macbook pro 2015 and I really like how fluid everything is however it has a 128 ssd and I don't want to dualboot windows off an external drive in the future or even worse doing everything on the small internal. What do you guys recommend? The only thing with the XPS that it is scary for me is their quality control and apparently their customer service. The cool thing about a macbook is that as a student if I have some sort of problem I can just go to one of their stores and not worry about shipping the laptop somewhere and then wait for a couple of days/weeks. Would be great to have some insight from someone who used both,

    Thanks again!

    Hi all,

I am looking for a 15" GTX1050Ti/GTX1060 Laptop for around £1k, and I have identified these two as my favourites of what I have seen so far.

Was wondering if any owners out there of these that would like to feedback on whether they would recommend either one?

    Thanks!

[Discussion] Should I sell my dell 5577 to get a dell xPS 9550?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:30 AM PST

I have a Dell Inspiron i5577-5328BLK-PUS and am wondering if I should sell it in order to get a Dell XPS 15 9550-0000SLV for $500.

Pros of the 5577: Newer CPU More Powerful GPU?

Cons of 5577: Looks like gaming laptop Heavy Slow 5400 RPM hard drive TN display

Pros of the 9550: Thin & light USB-C with TB3 4k IPS touchscreen

Cons of 9550: Slower ram (2133mhz vs 2400mhz) Older CPU Less powerful GPU?

My uses of a laptop: I make 1-2 videos a month, and try to podcast regularly. I play American Truck Simulator on Steam 1-2 hours a week.

Scaling down resolution for laptop battery life

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:30 AM PST

I have to chose between QHD+ (3200×1800) and FHD (1920×1080) display. I don't mind much about high resolution but if I can get a better screen I would, but I'm concerned QHD could drain more battery life. I read people saying that if you use games (or other graphic intensive applications) you will drawn much more battery, but scaling down a QHD to FHD (via software resolution down scaling) would use the same battery. I also read that scaling down resolution may be expensive for the OS so it would drain more cpu power anyway. So my question is: does it make sense to get a QHD+ laptop and, when I want to get more out of the battery, scaling down to FHD via OS expecting same battery life?

    Everyday Laptop for Uni ($1000AUD,Australia)

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 02:45 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 AUD, roughly $800USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't really want a 2 in 1 laptop, battery would be my top choice followed by Specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not necessarily important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Would prefer Windows, although it isn't a requirement

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 15.6" (or around), no less than 13".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Basic Photoshop, Light Room and light video editing in Adobe Premiere. Will also be used for music programs like FL Studio and Serato.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would be used every day for Uni (including travel) so a more rugged design and good battery would help.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Can go over budget slightly if worth it. 80% of the time it will only be used for Internet Browsing, Word, Excel ect.

best small laptop $500 Can Buy

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:12 AM PST

Hi all, Going into senior years and have $500 to spend on a laptop. Would really like it to be between 11 - 13" and I don't care if its 2 in 1 but would prefer without. I would consider buying refurbished as long as it was from a reputable source. Only need it for text programs and watching movies. In Australia btw. Thanks

1700$, Kazakhstan, for gaming and uni

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:00 AM PST

Need laptop for a university (programming) as well as for gaming

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Less than 1700$ (but if it is really worth it, i can always take a look at a more expensive ones), buying from Kazakhstan (can order from anywhere, i guess)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would love good battery life but it is not that important as weight.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is quite important, because i will be constantly travelling between uni and home, thinness would be great addition but not necessary.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and probably gonna install linux as well (for programming purposes).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. Mostly going to play shooters and some AAA titles, so i guess quite demanding games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Well, mostly Rainbow Six: Siege and I will occasionly play triple A games like new Far Cry, AC: Origins, For Honor, new Battlefields and so on. I'm pretty used to play at low res and low settings, so i dont require high graphics settings, even tho it would be nice to have that, but i strongly prefer FPS over it (minimum 60 or 120 depending on screen).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I will certainly need good keyboard as well as touchpad. And I will probably use it for quite a long time, so the build quality should be great. Windows Hello login types are welcome, but not necessary at all.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Pls no overheating and throttling machines (even tho im sure u wont suggest any). Thanks in advance for those who wish to help! I did my own researches but got confused even more, so please help

Dell XPS 13 3960 vs 3970 vs Asus ZenBook UX430UA - Picking laptops is a PITA.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:51 PM PST

So I've been looking for a laptop for a little while and while I initially started out in the Asus UX330 price range I've been slowly creeping up to where I am now.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is a little flexible but I'm a cheap fuck so probably not more than $1150. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is important but specs have priority.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Roughly 13 inch.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming but that's it. I have a desktop for gaming and heavy stuff.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality and decent keyboard/touchpad are super important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So this is mostly for use at school and I won't be using it for anything heavy as I have a desktop that can handle that. The longer I've been looking though, the more I've started caring about build quality and a laptop that looks decent since I'll be using this for years. Might seem petty, but its why although the specs of the Asus UX330 are perfect for me, the looks of the laptop and the reviews about the build quality have me looking a step up from it.

Here's the three that I'm having trouble picking between, but I'm open to other suggestions.

    New XPS 13 - $1,150

    CPU: i5-8250U

    Ram: 8GB

    SSD: 256GB

    XPS 13 - $1000

    CPU: i7-8550U

    Ram: 8GB

    SSD: 256GB

    ZenBook UX430UA - $1000

    CPU: i7-8550U

    Ram: 16GB

    SSD: 512GB

Spec wise, the UX430UA seems like the obvious pick, but I'm being petty and caring about looks and I really like the look of the XPS (especially the new one).

So what do you guys think?
