Photography 2 in 1 - Lenovo 920 or wait on new Dell XPS 15?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:48 AM PST

    Hi All -

    Main uses:

    • RAW photo editing
    • Home recording studio (guitar, mics, etc)
    • MS Office
    • Light gaming (streaming from XB1?)

This will be my first laptop, so some basic questions. I'm replacing a 10 year old desktop (Mac Pro) that was mainly used for a home recording studio.

I still do some home recording, but have also gotten into M43 photography as well. Does a discrete gpu make a big difference for photo editing? SW wise I'm considering picking up Capture One on this front.

I realize the new Dell will utilize a 45w cpu with a combo gpu vs the 920's 15w CPU with integrated graphics, but what kind of battery life hit will something like that cause? Is 6 - 8 hours an unreasonable expectation?

    • Is a 45w CPU necessarily faster than a comparable 15w model, or is it really an issue of efficiency
    • Is a 45w CPU usable on your lap, or is it like cradling fire?
    • Any downsides to a 45w vs a 15w chip?

Does the 920 support an eGPU that might offset a need for discrete graphics (if there is one)?

Lastly, these days is it better/cheaper to buy the laptop and upgrade ram on your own or get it from the factory how you want it?

    Thanks!

Anyone have a clue when the XPS 15 2-in-1 will be released?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:49 PM PST

All I see is "early Spring". I'm trying to decide between a mid-spec'd XPS 13 and the new 15 but if it doesn't come out soon I'll get the 13

Can someone Recommend a thunderbolt 3 dock that could drive 2 external monitors?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:22 PM PST

Hello! I recently got a Dell Inspiron 7577 that has a Thunderbolt 3 port and I'd love to be able to have a dual monitor home setup for when I'm working from home. I can't seem to find a dock that fits my need of 2 display outputs. Can anyone recommend a dock or setup that would work? Thanks!

    Solid recommendation for external hdd?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:16 PM PST

I got a seagate 2tb backup slim and it was DOA. I didn't think much of it and was going to get it replaced but then read many reviews that said it would die in a few months, not to mention only 1 year warranty. So I wanted to know any good external hdd models or brands you would recommend?

    Gigabyte Aero 15 questions

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:21 AM PST

So I actually own an Aero 15. Put in a 1tb 960 pro and another 16gb stick of RAM I had laying around to make this thing an utter beast. I have a few questions about its performance though.

When I right click on the desktop, there's a slight lag of up to one second between clicking and the context menu actually opening up. This only occurs on the desktop from what I've noticed- if you right click anywhere else like on the taskbar, it will open up instantaneously.

Another issue I've found is when I pin the file explorer to the taskbar and open it, sometimes, it can take nearly 2 seconds for it to show. It opens up instantly if I type Win + E, or search up "file explorer" in Start and click on it from there however.

Lastly, does anyone else feel like the laptop slows down the lower the battery level is? If I unplug the laptop from power, it's still fast. Once it drops to around 50% I feel a delay in opening apps and programs, as well as webpages, etc. I use Lightroom and it's nearly unusable because of its speed when it's below 50% of battery, even though it's on the "high performance" setting.

Is anybody else experiencing these issues?

    are laptop prices going up?

I am in the market to purchase a new laptop for CAD and Maya rendering; however I have noticed the newer coffee lake laptops are more expensive than the kaby lake laptops.

For example, lenovo P51 with intel xeon kabylake is cheaper than lenovo p52s which has intel i7 u series coffee lake.

Does the XPS 15 live Up to promise of 15" screen in 13" package?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:22 AM PST

I have been looking for a new laptop and have pretty much decided on a Precision M5510/Dell XPS15 -- I have researched a lot and like the design and the InfinityEdge display. I do have some reservations with the hardware durability, but hope it'll be fine. When my Macbook Pro messed up, the Apple Store did service it, but didn't provide a loaner laptop.

I used to have a Macbook Pro 13" 2015, and liked the portability. However, I didn't like the fact that it was completely non-upgradeable. Upgrading it at purchase time to my preferred specs was also not cheap.

I'm looking very hard at the Dell XPS15 and XPS 13, and am wondering if the trade-off in size and weight is worth it to increase the screen size. I'm not including the Macbook Pro 15" in this comparison because it's too expensive.

    XPS 15 / M5510 : 1.7 cm, 35.7 cm, 23.5 cm Macbook Pro 13" 2015: 1.8 cm, 31.4 cm, 21.9 cm Macbook Pro 13" 2016: 1.5 cm, 30.4 cm, 21.2 cm Dell XPS 13 : 1.5 cm, 30.4 cm, 20.0 cm

Weight-wise, the XPS 15 is 0.5 lbs heavier than the MBP 2015.

So far the best ones I've seen where the Microsoft Surface Laptop, Dell XPS 13 and MacBook Pro 13".

Do you have any other recommendations? Are there any cheaper options that are just as good?

    How long will I5-7200u "last"?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:11 AM PST

I need a new laptop atm, and right now prices for ultrabooks with the 7th gen processors are quite cheap or being sold out for the 8th.

Will the 7th gen still keep up for a few years if it's going to be used for everyday browsing, and studying/programming, multitasking etc? Or would it be worth an extra few hundred dollars to get the 8th gen?

Wish to play old games (DVDs) - internal vs external optical drive.

    Posted: 17 Feb 2018 07:11 PM PST

TLDR: Requesting advice on internal vs external optical drive. I wish to play old games (DVDs) on a laptop.

Hi all. Im looking for advice on getting a laptop on which I can play old games like Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, Command and Conquer and Zoo Tycoon. (Which I've got DVD discs for and expect to run via the Windows Compatibilty Mode).

I was wondering if theres any difference between getting a laptop with internal vs external optical drive.

I'd also like to run newer games like Cities Skylines, Pillars of Eternity. Which i've got on Steam.

So Im thinking: "just get anything with 1920 x 1080, i7, 8GB Ram and a reasonable graphics card". However, i find there's very limited choice if I specify i want an internal optical drive.

What are your thoughts on playing (old) games on an external optical drive?

    Thank you very much :)

4K Dell XPS 15 VS other Options?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2018 07:46 PM PST

    Hello all!

I came across a Dell XPS 15 (4K, i7-7700HQ, 32GB DDR4, GTX 1050...) for $1800 ($500 off original price) so I pulled the trigger and picked it up. Not sure if I am going to keep it yet as I still want to look into other options (picked it up because the deal ends soon) and was wondering, could anyone here recommend any other options worth looking into or is this the best I can get for this price? Thank you!

EDIT: I won't be gaming. I plan on using it for work and music production.

How's aftermarket replacement/refurbishment of 'flat' battery packs?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2018 05:04 PM PST

This is something that came to mind earlier today. I've always seemed to have horrible luck with quick capacity loss in my laptop batteries over the years. Good part is up to this point all my laptops have had easily replaced batteries that contain bog-standard 18650 cells so even decent quality third party replacements are a dime a dozen.

Now recently I have upgraded and have a laptop with a built in flat pack battery. Based on teardowns should be an easy replacement procedure-wise. My concern is over lack of knowledge of aftermarket availability/manufacture of these flat cell batteries. Especially if OEM's go with irregularly sized individual cells in each 'pack'. What's this going to end up looking like going forward with what seems like most laptop manufacturer's going to slimmed down flat batteries?

Little bit of a rant but these days spec-wise PC/laptop hardware improvements is slowing compared to what it was around a decade ago. One of a number of reasons I specced out my recent laptop purchase was aside from battery concerns it should last quite a few years bare minimum without feeling a need to upgrade. But as we all know batteries eventually lose capacity or die altogether and I don't foresee the new flat style batteries being any different. And I'd like to be able to replace the battery as needed down the road without a big hassle.
