Gaming laptop without all the flash lEDs and logos?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 08:59 AM PST

Would like a laptop for work and gaming, but wouldn't want one with all of the logos, such as 'ROG', and LEDs as bright as the sun when you open it. Need something that looks classy when I visit customers, but can run some games also.

Anyone have the new Dell XPS 13? Care to comment on its fan noise?

I've just read reviews on their past 13 models that were complaining that the fans would sound like rockets while just browsing google. Anyone care to comment on the newest model's fan noise?

HP Spectre X360 13 or Asus Zenbook UX370UA?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 01:56 PM PST

I'm looking for a 2 in 1 for use primarily for study (essays and assignments, ebook text book reading, class notes).

I'm able to get either of these with a reasonable discount from my employer, and the discount is such that the Zenbook is about $100AUD cheaper than the Spectre.

The exact models I'm looking at are below and you can view them on the jb hifi Australia site if you want to see exact specs.

    Asus Zenbook UX370UA-C4198T

    HP Spectre X360 13-AE009TU

Both are 8th gen i5 with 8gb ram and an SSD.

Battery life, touch screen quality and transport ability are my main considerations.

What is the best 2 in 1 laptop under $1600

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 11:51 AM PST

Looking for a New School Laptop (US, $800)

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 11:42 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US, want to try and find one for $800 or less

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like a 2 in 1, but it is not required. Touchscreen is required though.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer to keep it on the lighter or thinner side, but don't mind the extra weight or thickness if it means saving some money.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anywhere in the small 11"-15" range, 13" would be ideal.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Probably some light gaming, but mostly for schoolwork. CS major so a lot of coding and such, but no video or photo editing really.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends and some Paladins, 60 fps would be nice for both of them but as long as LoL has a fine fps I will be satisfied.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would definitely prefer to have SSD as the storage stype over HDD, and 256GB would be optimal but I could settle on 128GB as well. Touch-screen is a must, 2 in 1 would also be very nice. A touchpad would be helpful but I have my own mouse I could use if there isn't one.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for helping me out, I greatly appreciate it!!

    XPS 15 9560 4K or Envy 13t 4K? Please help me decide!

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 07:22 AM PST

Hello everyone, thank you for reading.

I recently sold my Razer Blade 14 (Late 2016 GTX970M) and have been trying to replace it since. A month ago i purchased a Dell 7577 and ended up returning it because visually i felt like i was using a laptop from 1996, the bezels are very retro to say the least. Two weeks ago i purchased a Powerspec 1710 and really wanted to keep it but returned it due to the thermals, the fans due to thermals, and the sheer size of it, while extremely thin for a 17" laptop it is still extremely bulky.

I travel a lot, do general web browsing, video playback, and photo editing within Photoshop and Lightroom. I have a desktop with a 980ti and 144hz panel that i game on for the best experience but i wouldn't mind playing an hour or two of something while i'm traveling. Wouldn't mind being able to balance on my chest easily while laying down, I do find myself using the touchscreen quite a bit as well.

    My choices currently are:

HP Envy 13t 4K - $999 from Costco (still available in store)

    • 8th gen i7-8550U
    • 16GB LPDDR3
    • MX150 2GB
    • 13.3" 4K touchscreen panel
    • 512 GB SSD

Likes - Very portable, very light so it is easy to use for casual browsing, has dedicated graphics for Photoshop and Lightroom, newer than XPS 15 by 6 months, for $999 it seems like a really great deal for a such a powerful ultrabook. Costco has a 90 day return policy, 2 years standard warranty and i used my Citi Costco card which adds another 2 years of warranty for a total of 4 years. In total it would be about $600 cheaper than the XPS.

Dislikes - No Thunderbolt but does have two Gen 1 USB-C, no fingerprint scanner but can be added via USB, surprising amount of keyboard flex likely due to thinner aluminium used near the keyboard, keyboard itself isn't spectacular either.

Dell XPS 15 9560 4K - $1359.00 from Micro Center (ask for the 512GB 4K version, they don't list it on their website but they have in-store stock)

    • 7th gen i7-7700HQ
    • 16GB DDR4-2400 RAM
    • GTX 1050 4GB
    • 15.6" 4K touchscreen panel
    • 512 GB SSD

Likes - A lot like my previous Razer Blade 14 in portability and size, absolutely gorgeous screen, has 2-lane Thunderbolt, has a fingerprint reader, much better dedicated graphics compared to the MX150, really big battery, and i really like the trackpad over the HP.

Dislikes - It is now a year old and due for a refresh any moment. Heavy due to the enormous battery, potential coil wine, the speakers on my old Nexus 6P sounded better than the speakers on this laptop. Micro Center has a 15 day return period, and a 1 year accidental damage coverage would run me $199.00.

Both laptops seem to fit the bill for what i need from them. I don't care much for the 4K panel on the HP, and i don't care much for the Thunderbolt port on the Dell.

I'm leaning towards the HP because of the price and 90 day return period, who knows what will be launched in the next 90 days, you know? Maybe Dell will release the XPS 15 refresh within that time.

Please let me know which you think i should go with or if you have another laptop to suggest that seems to fit what i'm looking for. I really appreciate you, the time you took to read this, and i hope to hear your feedback.

All things being equal, which would you get: 8GB 8th Gen i7 or 16GB 8th Gen i5?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 10:02 PM PST

I'm comparing two different Lenovo Yoga 920 configurations and all the other specs are equal. I'm having a hard time deciding which one is the better configuration?

here's a rough breakdown of what this laptop will be used for:

    • 75% web surfing and web apps (gmail, I use Google Docs for my business, spreadsheets, simple presentations, simple brochures, maintaining my Wix website, Google adwords, some of these tabs I keep open 24/7 to monitor)
    • 20% video streaming (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube)
    • 5% Photoshop

    New memory ram for laptop

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 05:46 AM PST

I currently have on my laptop a 8gb ram. I want to increase it to 16gb however the model/brand is kinda rare (a strange Samsung one which I only found in one website and its too expensive). Is it a good idea to buy a different brand but it will have same stats (clock speed ddr3 etc)? If yes, what are the main things to check so they both can work together well ?

New Acer laptop or refurb'd macbook? $500 budget

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 10:05 PM PST

    USA -

I've been doing some research into laptops under $500. There are some great options that suit my needs.

    My needs are

    • streaming video
    • internet browsing
    • editing gopro/iphone/dji drone footage

I am conflicted on whether or not to buy a new (non apple) laptop or to buy a refurb'd macbook. I just don't know how good they will perform at a $500 price point. The new laptop in question is the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM

    Help?! Thank you in advance.

Help choosing a Laptop for university

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 05:07 AM PST

Hi, I'm looking for help in terms of choosing a laptop for university. I will be studying law conjoint with bcom, so I don't think I will need much power for my laptop. I'm just looking for a durable and light laptop as I will be travelling a lot on the train and something thatis future proof and will last me a long time (4 to 5 years). I have cut my choice down to these 4 laptops (links below). 3 of them r non touch and 1 is touch. A touch screen would be nice in a laptop but it's not a deal breaker as I'm just looking for something solid and reliable.

    https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKLEN102006A/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Gen4-Business-Ultrabook

    https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKLEN132010/Lenovo-ThinkPad-13-Business-Laptop-133-Intel-i5-72

    https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKLEN3689614/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T470-Notebook-14-FHD-IPS---Intel-C

    https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKHNB3536903/HP-Spectre-x360-13-ac038tu-Flip-Ultrabook-133-FHD

The price of the laptop is not a problem. I'm just looking for the most value for my money. The think pad 13 seems like a good option but it has a 720p display compared to 1080p of others and qhd of x1 carbon. All the other options have a i5 and x1 carbon has a i7, but I have read that it has a lot of fan noise. Please help me make a decision

Looking for docking Station for my gaming laptop

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 08:10 PM PST

Hey there, I am new to this subreddit so I hope I'm doing this at least somewhat correctly. I am looking for a docking station that would be able to charge, connect usbs, and output display via the Tunderbolt port on my Dell Inspiron 15 7577 Gaming laptop. I have almost no background knowledge in this, I know that the Dell D6000 Docking Station would be a possibility, but I am wondering if this is my best choice or if there are any other options, either Dell branded or not Dell brand, that would better fit my requirements. If you need more information or anything, just leave a comment and I will hopefully get back to you as soon as possible.

Quick bit of advice regarding two laptops

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 12:22 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm back again to quickly ask for a bit of advice regarding two laptops. These are both intended for university work, but also capable of playing a few games of Civilization V during downtime. So I'm looking for lightweight, mid-tier, 8th Gen CPU, with as powerful a graphics card as can be obtained without pushing up weight and cost too much.

I've narrowing my search down to two different machines:

    • HP Envy 13 (i7-8550U, MX150 GPU, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM)

    • Lenovo Ideapad 720 15" (i7-8550U, RX 560 4GB, 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM

Both machines are similarly priced, with the HP costing $1,499AUD, and the Lenovo costing $1,509AUD. The weight difference between the two machines is about 700g, but it doesn't matter too much to me, as the Ideapad is on the lighter end for a 15" with a discrete GPU.

    Other suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks!

    Laptop recommendation [Poland] [750€]

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 12:19 AM PST

Hello! I would like to ask you for laptop recommendation.

    As per form:

I would like to receive best specs available for said price Weight and thinness is not of particular importance, however I do not have specific desk area in my home, plus I'd need to take it sometimes outside (work)

Windows, or no OS pre-installed. Preferred screen size would ~15"

I'd like to use it for gaming - Stellaris, Witcher, Skyrim, GTA V, PUBG, Fortnite, and sometimes minor Photoshop picture editing. Game settings: Medium/High

I was thinking about purchasing Lenovo 320 (price: ~650 Euro) - Intel Core i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce MX150 2GB - however I do not know if it is a good choice, or not.

Please note due to the geographic reasons, some models might not be available for me.

I would greatly appriciate your feedback. Thank you

    Buying advice

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 11:27 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 500 or less. Id like to spend as little as possible. Used is fine with me as well.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is not needed. Best specifications for the money would be the best for me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want a behemoth, but I don't need/want anything small and flimsy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10, Home edition is fine

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A but 1080p would be nice.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light Gaming. Mostly needed for Excel work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Diablo 3 and Stardew Valley would be great (not needed)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need something sturdy if possible. I want a laptop of my own to bring to work (I do a lot of efficiency and organization work in a warehouse) as the ones we have are archaic and I generally have to do my work from my desk as a result.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically I need something for excel/pivot table work and hope to be able to play a few older/less demanding games on it.
