    Laptop for a student

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 01:41 PM PST

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new laptop (primarily for school usage). I was looking at the Dell xps 13/15, but it's a little above my price range. So what whould you recommend? I'd mainly use it for browsing the web, office, movies etc. Budget: €1000, €1200 at a stretch.

Hope someone can help me, thanks.

    School computer for family member

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 09:40 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800 dollars total, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 isnt important. Good battery life is. Graphics card isn't necessary but faster processor I can get for the money is.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/a

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some video editing for presentations, light-no gaming, HDMI port would be preffered

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? USB for connecting mouse and keyboard, HDMI for presentations, and comfortable keyboard and touchpad

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Preferably storage of about 500-1tb considering he will be using this for papers and other projects.

Dell XPS 13 full HD i5 or Macbook 2017 i5? (low end of both series)

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 04:25 AM PST

Hi there, currently deciding between two laptops as seen above.

I'm a university student so I wanted a high end laptop, mainly for interviews, job applications, travelling with and for work. I also run a game review website with heavy use of images and text (http://buttonsandmash.com/).

These are the two laptops I'm stuck between

    Dell XPS 13 for £1000: https://www.very.co.uk/dell-xps-13-with-133-inch-full-hd-infinityedge-display-intelreg-coretrade-i5-8250unbspprocessor-8gbnbspram-256gbnbspssd-laptop-aluminium-silver/1600226775.prd?_requestid=83980&Ntt=xps%2013

    Macbook Pro 2017 for £1200: https://www.very.co.uk/apple-macbook-pro-2017-13-inch-intelreg-coretrade-i5-processor-8gb-ram-128gb-ssd-with-optional-ms-office-365-home-space-grey/1600192263.prd?Ntt=macbook%20pro

These are my only two options as this website offers 12 months, pay later, which is perfect for me as a university student. I don't believe I need the higher end of either laptop so right now, I'm stuck between choosing the two. In terms of review comparisons, since they're both the lowest end, it's been difficult to find articles to help me decide!

Tempted by the Macbook, due to its high build quality, MAC OS but not sure about the keyboard. I am interested in the Dell, due to sporting similar specs but with a substantial price difference for me.

    Any help is appreciated!

Asus UX430UN VS Asus UX331UN VS Lenovo IdeaPad 720S-14

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 11:47 AM PST

I really can't choose between these three.

I'm looking for a lightweight 13 or 14" laptop which can handle light to medium gaming with a solid 60 fps (we're talking games like Darkest Dungeon, Stardew Valley, some JRPGs, so no FPS or anything like that). I figure I need at least an MX150, integrated GPU won't be enough. The difference in weight doesn't matter, however:

    1. Which has the best screen? Brightest, best colors, etc? Are there any differences on the ASUSes except 13 vs 14"?

    2. Which handles gaming the best without throttling?

    Thanks!

Should I go for a dedicated GPU?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 10:24 AM PST

I need a new laptop for mostly work (programming, docs etc) and I'm looking at thin and light options with good battery life. I've made a mistake of buying a gaming laptop previously and I know the pain of carrying it around (Asus G75VW).

This time, I'm thinking of the Asus VivoBook S14 14" laptop with core i5 8250u and 8gigs of ram. I also have another option with s15 which is a 15" model and comes with NVIDIA MX150. The s14 is cheaper by around 80$ USD but I get a 128gb ssd whereas the S15 doesn't.

What do you guys think is the best one to buy?

Will a 4600u + HDD in a laptop be decent for basic browsing/surfing/streaming?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 09:12 AM PST

Looking at a laptop running a 4600u chip but has a 500gb serial ATA. I would prefer an SSD though but the price is good for me at around $650 CAD. Display is 1920x1080 IPS so that is a nice bonus for me. Thoughts on whether this will still be viable for just basic use that won't feel too slow/sluggish? Will the 4600u hold up?

Laptop in question is the Toshiba Z50-A.

Does the Asus S410UN MX150 thermal throttle at 73 deg?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 06:29 AM PST

I was considering between several lightweight ultraportables (sub 1.4kg) but so far, every single one of them have crippled graphical performance. From the Asus UX430un, UX331un, HP envy 13, Xiaomi mi notebook air, all of them have a GPU thermal limit of 73 deg which is too low and will thermal throttle.

My last hope is the Asus S410UN. But there are next to no reviews on this laptop's MX150 gpu performance.

If there are any S410un users reading this, can let me know if your GPU temp can go over 73 deg? HWMonitor (or some other apps) can monitor the temps. If the GPU can go over 73 means it doesnt have the 73 deg limit.

    Thanks!

What's the difference between Lenovo E580 and T580?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:26 AM PST

Hi, I was wondering if only the build quality is the reason for the price difference, which is huge in Europe, because they have similar specs.

is the $999.99 version of XPS13 the best bang for my buck in terms of specifications and overall peformance?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 05:54 PM PST

are there any asus laptops that compare around the same price range? (using for mostly photo editing with adobe light room so ram and processor is the main importance, as well as alittle gaming here and there)

Does anyone have a lenovo Ideapad 720s?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 03:39 PM PST

This laptop seems highly underrated. I might almost go as far as to say it might be better (from the spec sheets) then both the XPS 15 and the zenbook pro UX550. Honestly I can't find much about this laptop, it even took specific google searches just to find it on the Lenovo website and there are only ~3 videos about it on YouTube and they are all by the same person. Does anyone know anything about the Lenovo Ideapad 720s? Why is it so overshadowed?

Samsung Notebook 9 vs ASUS Zenbook UX330UA?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 08:40 PM PST

    Samsung

    Asus

Need some help choosing between these two. I'm going back to school to get my masters online, and need something light and portable that can go between home, work, and the library. I don't play any computer games. Battery life is important to me, as is a fan that's not too loud. I currently have a Samsung laptop that has lasted me 6 years (it's too heavy, which is why I want a new one). Does ASUS have the same lasting power?

Buying Help - Lenovo Yoga 910 versus 920

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:32 PM PST

I am debating buying a new Lenovo yoga 910 for $900 or purchasing the new lenovo Yoga 920 for $1350. They both have 8GB memory, the 910 had 256GB SSD while the 920 has 512GB SSD and both have the 8th gen i7 processor.

Any insight would be great between the two and their price? Or should a wait for a better time in the year to purchase the yoga?
