If I download windows 7 ISO will I be able to install it using the product key sticker on my computer?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:46 AM PST

My prebuilt computer came with Windows 7. I had to switch over to Windows 8 because of an error with my System Image. Is there any way I can get my precious windows 7 back?

This is the sticker I'm talking about pic

I tried downloading Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft but it rejected my Cd key because it said its an "SLP" key. Will this work if I download a 7 iso from elsewhere? Sorry if this is a dumb question :/

What basic things can you change in regedit? (that won't break your PC)

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:22 PM PST

    Hi all

I've been trying to familiarise myself more with the registry, now I'm aware that you can do some pretty irreversible stuff in there, but I have a dummy PC and I made sure to export the registry file just in case I do break everything.

Over the weekend I learned how to simply change the homepage of IE through the registry and I got curious as to what other mundane yet useful stuff you can do from there.

    Thanks in advance!

I found a "pagefile1.sys" in one of my hdd, what can I do with it?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:47 PM PST

As I said I found this "pagefile1.sys" hidden in one of my hdd. It says that was created/last modified/last access in 2014.

Can I get rid of it?

Is there something I should check before doing something?

Anything an Incoming Longtime Mac User Should Know Coming Back To Windows (Apps to D/L, etc.)?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:25 PM PST

    Hi all,

As the title indicates, I've been an Apple person for the last ~ten years, but am coming back into the Windows fold for a variety of reasons, though mainly due to the high performance machine I'll be needing for work and play purposes.

I've been Googling around for under the radar apps to download that introduce a variety of QOL improvement to the Windows experience, as well as things to just know when operating in the operating system, like what preferences to adjust immediately or how to resolve certain well-known errors that pop up, etc.

If anyone could even throw a single suggestion (or two) my way, that'd be plenty helpful.

P.S. please don't recommend things like snatching VLC or Chrome or Steam and so on. All the lists I've found via Google have been pretty patronizing and simplistic and stupid in this vein.

    Thanks!

    Windows 7 laptop starting/update issues

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:35 PM PST

I've got a Windows 7 laptop I've started using for a project, and the laptop has been updating every single day for like 5 days, almost an hour of updates every time I turn it on and another hour to configure updates. It has failed to update, giving me a "reverting updates" message, says "shutting down" during updates occasionally, needing me to start it again. Also, on startup, sometimes I get a black screen, the screen is on, but it doesn't do anything, just a blank screen. Having to shut down with power button and restarting to "fix" it. Not sure why any of it is happening.

    Recover StickyNotes after Windows Reset

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 01:32 PM PST

I recently reset Windows 10 after I was having an issue where none of my keyboard or mouse inputs would work at the computer login screen. The reset resolved the issue, however, my non-standard apps were deleted. I specified to keep my files, however.

I had some information in StickyNotes, but now StickyNotes appears to have started new after the reset. I see the Windows.old folder and was hoping to recover the information through there. There is no Sticky Notes folder in the AppData Windows folders or any .snt files to be found (on Windows.old or even any .snt files in my regular Windows folder). How and where is StickyNotes saving my info then each time I bring it up.

I should note that when I run stickynotes from the start bar it says "trusted microsoft store app" and is not a yellow notepad icon maybe indicating there is no local .exe (I cannot find it in System32 either).

However when I write information in it and close it and bring it back up, it is all there.

I will note that I did find folders for Windows and Windows.old with the path:

    C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes

The only useful thing in there though are .session files (no .snt files).

    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Does anyone know if the Simplix windows 7 cumulative update pack is still being developed?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:58 PM PST

Does anyone know if the Simplix windows 7 cumulative update pack is still being developed? Typically, there is an update published monthly, but there has not been one published since December 17th, 2017.

Of course the site, and corresponding forums are in Russian, so I've no clue what they are saying.

The site can be found at forum.oszone.net/thread-257198.html

Laptops with great color accuracy AND great performance without massive cost?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:23 PM PST

I'm a current owner of a Surface Book, version 1. The Surface Book 2 has recently released and brings with it massively upgraded performance while maintaining the same great display with stellar color accuracy in both sRGB and Adobe RGB. My current laptop performs well enough but I'd love a machine that can handle programs without any hiccup, without the "convertible/2-in-1 tax" that comes with a machine such as the SB. I currently pursue graphic design and game programming, and use the dGPU quite frequently with intensive programs.
Are there any lines of laptops other than the SB line which are well known for great performance and color accuracy? (Ex: The Razer Blade is a great performing laptop but doesn't bring with it a stellar display, as it's not a focus.) Being a convertible device isn't a must!

Issue with Windows 10 and unresponsive programs.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:01 AM PST

I'm really not sure where to post this, so if this is the wrong forum, please advise and I apologize in advance.

Just bought a new PC from iBuyPower. Works wonderfully for the most part, but I've encountered something I can't figure out the reason behind or tech support for. I have not contacted Microsoft Support directly. I'm more curious to see if this is a known issue.

I'll click on a program, be it the Microsoft Store, or Xbox App, or even the Windows Settings icon, and they'll open, but just sit on the splash screen and not do anything. I can close and reopen the app/program immediately thereafter and it will open as normal with no issues. Puzzling but...I'm not sure what to do?

Edit: in order to be specific as possible, this is generally the first time I open a program after I put the PC in sleep mode and wake it back up. Once I open the program the second time, it no longer has the initial hang up.

USB devices work in BIOS/Linux but not in Windows 10

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:49 AM PST

Weird issue as stated in title. Keyboard/mouse (all USB devices) don't work. Can't login into Windows. Tried unplugging power, BIOS reset, Linux and everything. Wireless keyboard transmitter powers on for 3 seconds at login screen before going out. They both work in Windows startup repair area. Don't work in safe mode login screen. Don't have analog keyboard/mouse. Any help? Thanks.

How to make Folder View settings to apply on parent and subfolders only?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:18 AM PST

Solved (kinda) : I made three AHK scripts to somewhat automate the proccess (that was my first time with ahk). One to set View:list Group by: type, one to revert it, and one go to the next folder automatically. Bunch of ragtag macros really.

I know this has been asked to death but I can't seem to find a solution that I am satisfied with so I'm wondering if any of you guys have found a nice trick or two.

    Running Windows 10.

What I want to achieve: Parent Folder and all sub-folders - View as list and group by type. Just this specific folder and all of its sub-folders.

What I don't want to achieve: all folders being like that. I'd like it to stay default as if I just installed windows.

    What I already did:

    • Set parent folder settings, open folder option, view tab, apply to all folders.

Perfect! Except everything now is messed up and I definitely don't want that.

    • Change folder optimization for (General items, Documents,.. etc) Check apply to all subfolders.

Not really what I'm looking for. Optimization for General Items and Documents set it to Detailed View, Pictures and Videos to Large Icons. Again, View as list and group by type.

    What I didn't do yet:

    • Mess with the desktop.ini in the parent folder setting to my preferences. The idea is to make one edited master ini file and just copy it to sub-folders. Far better than right clicking each, but I don't much about desktop.ini files.
    • Do it folder by folder. I'm open in using AHK scripts to automate mouse clicking the process but I don't know how to do that. The folder contains a number of sub and sub-sub folders inside it.
    • Use third party tools.

The First method seems to be current best one but I hate it every time I go to other folders. It's just messed up. I think the best way is a better implementation of method 2 which uses apply to all subfolders the problem is it is not set to my viewed/group settings. Basically something like this, View as list-Group by type and apply to all subfolders. Subfolders only, not all folders.

If anyone have a working script/ini can I have a copy of it? Or can guide me in the process of making a script or editing a ini file that would be much appreciated as I don't mind learning this stuff.

Also what happens when I open the folder to another computer, ex. I make a backup to a eHDD and open it on another pc, would it view as I set it or as the explorer settings?

Thank you for reading all of that, Cheers!

[Help]Keyboard input for Windows 10 IoT Core (Raspberry Pi 3, mB) isn't usable--it repeats the input for certain keystrokes.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:30 AM PST

I successfully installed Windows 10 IoT Core on my new Raspberry Pi 3 (model B) and I am able to access it from my wireless LAN. I was able to circumvent issues with the network connectivity but I am getting this issue each time: the keyboard input in any area just repeats for certain keys. For instance, if I tried typing "powershell" into the CLI (local access, not network), it will show "pppppppppppppppppppppppp..." until I perform an interrupt. Following that, it can take certain characters but does the same or similar for others. Basically, it makes any keyboard input useless, regardless of the local application used (browser or command line). This issue occurs when I connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor locally up to my device.

I have rebooted the device but there is no change. I recently upgraded the firmware to build version 16299 and upgraded to the most recent update.

Is there a fix-action for this or is this unique to my environment?

Impossible to get into my old surface pro 3

    Posted: 17 Feb 2018 11:59 PM PST

    Hi,

I've been trying to get into my surface pro 3 over the past few weeks. Hopefully someone here has a solution for my problem!

    1. I forgot the password to login to windows
    2. I do not know which microsoft account is associated with it, as I have a few emails that have been used before. If I can find out which microsoft account is associated with it I could get into it.
    3. I have tried to reset my computer using in-built windows 10 features, i.e. troubleshoot --> reset PC, but it does not exist
    4. I have tried to boot from USB, to install windows 10 anew. However, BitLocker is stopping me from going in
    5. I have tried to manually change the password from command prompt inside the new windows 10 installation file, but Bitlocker stops me from going in
    6. I have tried to boot from recovery mode, but the Bitlocket stops me once again.

Apparently I have a technician that is charging me for $250 bucks to do this, as he can apparently reseat a hardware of some sort to solve this software issue, but I'm hoping I can avoid this heavy cost. As much as I'm willing to pay, $250 bucks for a forgotten password for an old laptop is a little hefty.

Hope someone can help me. Thank you!
