I accidentally left my computer on all night, is there anything special I need to do

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 02:07 PM PST

My computer is in my garage, which is cold, so while I'm downloading something I usually go to a warmer part of the house. I was downloading something late at night and fell asleep. Since my computer was on all night, should I shut it down for a few hours, or can I still use it without negative consequences?

(Windows 10) How to absolutely, positively annihilate any possibility of Windows automatically displaying and or switching the input method / input language?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 12:45 AM PST

    Hello!

I've struggled with this issue for years now and cannot seem to find a solution.

I have one simple requirement: set an input language, keep it, use it, and for Windows to never automatically change it, or add a new one (English).

It happens with Steam a lot : I'm German and I want to use Steam in English, in this constellation the automatic input switch often occurs.

I have tried to uninstall other languages and input methods time and time again, but what I've found is that Windows is smart and wants to help me and just re-installs them when some entity of the system apparently thinks I need another input language right now!

Currently I'm sitting at work on an English Windows installation, something happened and now the taskbar displays DEU because somehow the english input method got installed but it automatically switched back to DEU. So now I'm informed 24/7 that I am using a German keyboard layout (and, as I am German, i expect this and only want to ever use this layout) .

This is driving me insane! Please, someone, release me from this hell!

What is the data retention length of an SD card without power?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 10:12 PM PST

If you leave a brand name SD card unplugged, and it has data, about how long can one expect the data to last before the floating gates discharge themselves? How long before files start to become corrupted? Total data loss? Do individual cells last roughly the same length of time, so once data loss starts the entire drive is fairly quickly wiped?

Has the data retention length changed with different generations, like a card from years ago versus a modern one? What about with card quality (for example class 1, 2, etc) or capacity?

Does the data you have deleted but still remains on the card get corrupted first or do all cells have an equal chance of losing its charge?

Anyone got any documentation/research on this topic, or even personal anecdotes of data loss?

I need to make a computer only usable for online schooling.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 02:32 PM PST

My brother is in highschool and has been recently involved in some very serious drug problems. He is moving to the town I live in to stay with me and although I consider myself decent with computers I do not know how to make the computer secure for him. He is doing online school and so will need to access the computer but I want to make sure it can only access his homework when he is on it and disable things like private browsing or social media. I tried on my own computer using a tutorial to disable private browsing and was unsuccessful. I want him to succeed and just want to make sure he cannot abuse the use of a computer through this. short of just watching him over his shoulder when he is on it I cannot ensure that he will not have any access to his past connections. I have never had to block sites or childproof a computer before so any help is appreciated.

TL;DR I need to make a desktop computer only usable for online school and not have access to anything else if that is possible.

Thank you for your time in reading this.

The function keys on my laptop randomly trigger without being pressed

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:56 AM PST

I've got the Gemini NC14, a cheap ultrabook. It's been working fine until recently. Randomly and all at once, the function keys activate including volume and brightness control; email, settings and project app shortcuts. When this is happening all the apps open and the volume and brightness change, making the laptop unusable. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Downloads Keep Failinghttps

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:52 AM PST

For the past couple months my downloads keep failing. It seems to be a time thing, if the file is large enough and takes a while to download it just stops eventually and fails. I've found that if when it first stops I pause the download and then resume it, it starts again but I'll have to keep doing this until it finishes. I'm using Firefox on windows 10, I have a couple add-ons ; adblock plus, Video DownloadHelper, Reddit Enhancement Suite, and Imagus but I don't think they are the problem. I can't for the life of me figure out whats causing this. Any tips on whats wrong or how I could fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 10 USB Ports Not Working

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:32 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I work in a support team where we use HP Probook 650 G3 laptops on Windows 10 Pro (some older G2 ones too) and we currently have around 200 or so users on these laptops.

Each day 4-5 people come to our help desk with the same problem... After their laptop updates it does not pickup USB ports. Same issue happens when we use a docking station to control the USB ports.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? Experienced anything similar? Or can point me in the right direction?

We're really stuck! Please let me know if you need more info.

    Thanks guys.

I am unsure what to call this network issue, but it is definitely an issue.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 11:29 PM PST

    The Issue

I just moved my office into the basement of our house, and naturally, I've been having some internet troubles since I am now one floor below the modem.

My main problem is what I believe to be the latency, for example when playing overwatch, the ping will be well in the hundreds, making gameplay next to impossible with regular disconnections.

Speedtest sometimes returns an unhealthy ping of 250 and sometimes a healthy one in the 20 range.
Pinging google results in This atrocity. Overwatch ping as stated before is well in the hundreds.

It may be worth stating that download speed is 1.67 Mbps compared to the 50+ Mbps it was hitting before. Upload remains approximately the same.

Disabling and reenabling the ethernet adapter solves the problem temporarily, the ping drops back down to the 20s, but then randomly a few minutes later, returns to a high ping. Screenshot of that happening.

    What I've tried

    • Reenabling the ethernet adapter
    • Restarting all the network equipment
    • Connecting the Ethernet access point thing directly to the modem
    • Wi-fi (Provides an even worse connection)

    Conclusion

Overall I am not the most knowledgeable at all in networking, so any help explaining...

    1) What exactly is happening

    2) What a solution to my issue could be

    would be amazing.

Thank you so much in advance

Is there a faster way of getting text onto a computer than gmail?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 11:18 PM PST

I use my phone as a notepad in which I jot things multiple times a day, and for my phone the fastest way to do that is with my gmail app. At the moment I just leave those notes in drafts. I tell myself I'm gonna transfer them over to these nice notepad docs for easy searching and access on my computer, since opening and searching for things using gmail is so slow. But also since opening gmail is so slow, I've stopped getting around to transferring the text from gmail to my notepad docs on my computer.

So I'd love to be able to email text to somewhere as accessible to my desktop and its notepad docs as possible, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a faster way for that to happen so that it can be something I do daily and without much thought instead of a slow task.

    Can't charge tablet

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:53 AM PST

I can't charge my tablet, it's battery is dead, whenever I put in a charger it takes 10 secs for it to light up to indicate it is charging and then when the battery and procent shows up 1 sec later it dissapears, and this is a loop, and it's stuck on 0%, and I can't turn it on. But my phone is charging with it, sometimes when I plug into my phone there's a notification saying something like: slow charging, low electric current on ta/usb connector.

    Script target file

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:51 AM PST

I know this question will seem very stupid none the less - The company where I work uses a script to load a group of apps on to phones for our customers. I am trying to create a seperate group of apps with a script that adds this group onto the phones. Am I able to copy the originalscript and change its target file to upload somehow?

SEAGATE 5TB External Desktop Hard Drive

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 10:44 PM PST

My friend gave me his Seagate hard drive that he doesn't use, since I need it for work. I tried using it without the power supply and it didn't work. I'm assuming it needs extra power to function properly. My concern is how the thing works. Is it like a USB? If my friend used it before, will he be able to access it remotely or see my data? Dumb question but I'm paranoid

Touchscreen no longer working after windows update.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 10:42 PM PST

My friend has a Dell XPS 13" 9365 2-in-1 laptop. He said after windows 10 ran updates, his touchscreen stopped working.

I'm good with computers myself, so i tried almost everything I can think of.

I figured i would just reinstall the touchscreen driver from device manager by doing the following, device manager > Human Interface Devices > touchscreen driver > right click > update > browse > let me pick from a list. Except that the touchscreen driver was not there.

So I clicked "View" on top, then clicked "show hidden devices" and that's when the touchscreen driver showed up, but it was grayed out (windows doesn't detect the hardware)

I already knew that i was going to get a "(Code 45) windows does not detect the hardware make sure it's connected" or whatever, which i did end up getting.

Basically, his laptop no longer sees the hardware for the touchscreen. I popped the bottom cover off, re-seated the LCD connection and the touchscreen sensor cable, didn't work.

One of the worst parts about this is that I can't just undo the update by restoring to an earlier point in time, Windows 10 had restore points disabled, so his one and only restore point was the one I created today.

    • I updated the BIOS. Nothing.

    • I updated the chipset driver, which i got from Dell's site for his computer model, nothing.

    • I set the BIOS back to factory, nothing. (Dell's tech support idea)

The touchscreen does not work in the BIOS either. The touchscreen options are there, the option to enable it is checked.

Dell doesn't have a touchscreen driver either.

I noticed that in the HID section in device manager there are 2 drivers called "I2C HID Device", the first one is fine, the second one has the yellow triangle with the exclamation point, right clicking and viewing the driver info shows the Device Status as

This device cannot start. (Code 10) A request for the HID descriptor has failed.

The hidden touchscreen driver i mentioned earlier says that it's location is "I2C HID Device", so they're connected. This I2C driver is not grayed out. I tried updating it, can't windows gives the (Code 10).

Is there anything else we can try? Dell said a Windows Refresh, I doubt it. Seems like this all, somehow, turned into a hardware problem.

Only other options I can think of is if I can boot Linux from a flash drive, and check if Linux recognizes the hardware. Idk where to start with this option, which distro would be best? Linux Mint?

I did a screen replacement on a Lenovo Yoga before, I had the same issue, but it was because the the small board the digitizer connects to that runs to the board, kept disconnecting, but that was my fault, i didnt secure the cable. My friend's laptop hasn't been touch, so the cable isn't un-lodged, but i will check it

I brought a new gaming desktop but I don't want to open it to use in my home becuase its old smelly and damp, moist on cold days, musty and dusty my room smells like a sweatshop and outside my window there is mossI live in a very humid place

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:23 AM PST

I live in a very humid place near a lake swampy smell area smell got worse after at the beginning of this year after bad forest fire in a nearby suburb burned through the bush/forest marshes/swamp causing thing ash, dust and bugs to go everywhere uplifting trees causing dust and ash holding mud washed away in the rain revealing all the dead things and decomposers smells in the air all around the town and outskirts, anyway it was a bit like that before with the sweatshop smell because of my bad B.O but was wondering how to protect it before I open it I have covers for when its off but other then that don't know how to keep it clean my notebook and laptop are their last legs becuase of all the dust in it and some kind of stickiness like dried glue. (sorry for any bad spelling or grammar I'm dyslexic) The only suggestion I have been given was fly mesh over the air vents but the dust is small and will get into the case and get inside the C.P.U's fan where shoves it down the bits you can't get to, even after unscrewing the tiny screws without forgetting where they go or ripping the wires in my notebook but I don't want to risk that anymore my hands hurt after too.

Accidentally wiped "USB Storage" on my Samsung S5, now can't access the phone via ADB

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:23 AM PST

    Hey,

as the title says I fucked up my phone.

I tried to wipe the data, including the OS, and stupid as I was I also checked "USB Storage" before wiping.

Now when I try to use "adb devices", my device is not listed.

I tried different cables, a different USB Port, adb server-kill, adb server-start, restarting my PC, etc.

In the device Manager my phone is listed under "Other devices" as "SAMSUNG_Android". When I try to update the driver, I get an error message, that something went wrong.

I manually downloaded the driver for this phone, but I get the same message "While installing the driver for this device, there was a problem in windows".

Someone has an Idea what I could try next? ,_,
