So I just accidentally deleted my entire hard drive. I have a backup but its a week old. Can I get this stuff back easily?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:29 PM PST

Normally every week I erase my external drive and then copy my internal drive to my external drive so I always have a backup.

Well I guess I wasnt paying attention and I just now did the opposite. I erased my entire internal drive and I, of course, got the message "too big for recycle bin, erase permanently?" Which I always hit "YES" to.

So these are all business files and I just lost an entire week of work. Not the end of the world but I do feel a little sick right now seeing how about 12 hours of this week was spent staring at excel and writing a 30 page document. Is there any way at all to recover this shit without paying a specialist? It isnt THAT important but it seems that I cant undelete it like normal.

Blue Screens while playing games. Still can't fix it after 4 microsoft support chats.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:38 AM PST

I've been getting this often where a game freezes and then a blue screen appears with code UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION. I've tried pretty much everything to prevent this from happening.

    • using DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    • using sfc /scannow
    • upgrading drivers
    • checking for windows updates
    • using chkdsk C: /f /r /x
    • performing an in-place upgrade (with the media creation tool)

Is there anything I can do besides reinstalling windows? I'd like to know if this could be a hardware issue and what piece of hardware would this be related to. I've had this issue for as long as I can remember, and I don't think even doing a full reset before fixed the issue. How do I know what is causing this?

Two questions regarding three hard drives I managed to kill in one instance

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:01 AM PST

This morning I was testing a new power supply. After concluding it was safe to use I plugged it into the whole PC, and it powered up. In my infinite genius I plugged in all three of my hard drives and an SSD without checking to make sure nothing was going to go wrong with a single one before the whole bunch. Anyway, they must have been receiving the wrong voltage, but I'm not really sure why or how. Within a few hours I was sure the three hard drives were dead; the SSD still functions as normal.

All the recovery quotes I got were way out of the kind of money I've got right now. I saw some threads online suggesting to other people who might (might) have done the same thing to replace the HDD PCB, which would cost ~$60. Is this a good course of action, or does anyone have experience with this? The drives don't spin up or make any noise, they've been tried in multiple computers, including computer repair shops. They didn't make any noise when they died, and I'm not really sure if there was a smell of dead electronics in the air; a big fan was on right next to me. Hope this extra information makes a difference.

But also: I noticed that when you buy a HDD from Newegg or something, it has the option to include a recovery program. It's along the lines of $20 for ~3 years from DriveSavers or Square Trade. Would it be possible to just buy the same hard drive again, include the recovery program, and send it in right away for recovery? I guess I'll need to swap the labels for the serial number, but as far as I can tell that makes sense. Get a new HDD and the recovery for like 1/15 the price.

Sorry for this whole load of information. If you have an opinion on any bit please fill free to drop a note. Thanks so much.

Secure Boot Violation on Windows 10 Computer (ASUS Mobo)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:30 AM PST

I'm getting this error when I power on my computer. I set it up with default settings which means that Secure Boot was enabled, and pretty much every other UEFI setting was on default.

I have tried to use google to find a solution to this problem but they are almost exclusively Windows 7 related and all of them include instructions for disabling Secure Boot.

If you disable Secure Boot in UEFI after you have installed Windows 10 in UEFI mode with Secure Boot enabled, it will break and not boot. Soooooo this isn't a solution to my problem.

Anyone have any experience with solving this problem on a Windows 10 machine?

The only thing I could think of to attempt is to try a system restore (of which there are apparently zero restore points for whatever reason), or restore to a previous version of Windows. I presume it would be a dowgrade from 1709 to 1706, maybe?

Windows 10 wifi can't connect to this network.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:52 AM PST

Windows 10 randomly can't connect to the wifi that it's been connecting everyday. Whenever I try to connect to the wifi, it's like disabling the wifi adapter for a split second then display "can't connect to this network".

It usually can be resolved by restart, but not this time. The problem persists.

Wifi is fine on any other devices.

I've tried to forget the network, disable/enable the device, and uninstall/reinstall the driver. All failed. There's no 802.11n in device properties to disable. (these are solutions I found in google).

    OS: Windows 10 Pro 32bit

Network Adapter: Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Wireless Network Adapter.

I already got the update that adds 3D Objects under This-PC if that matters...

Seriously considering downgrade back to Windows 7...

    Any help is appreciated.

Function keys 1-3 and 9-12 not working on Samsung laptop (Windows 8)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:49 AM PST

    Model: 300E5EV/300E4EV/270E5EV/270E4EV

    Type: x64-based PC

    Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 847 @ 1.10GHz, 1100 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)

    OS: Windows 8 Single Language

    Version: 6.2.9200 Build 9200

    Those are the technical details.

The problem here is quite simple: half of my F keys don't work. If it matters, here are the functions they control:

F1: It's a gear and wrench, so I'm pretty sure it's system configuration or something. Haven't used it before.

    F2: Brightness down

    F3: Brightness up

    F4: Screen mirroring

F5 (works): Disable input (cursor doesn't move, keys don't work, etc.)

    F6 (works): Mute volume

    F7 (works): Volume down

    F8 (works): Volume up

    F9: Empty

    F10: Empty

F11: It's a picture of a fan. Never used it, so I have no clue what it does.

    F12: WiFi on/off

Now, then. I've done quite a bit of research, and this seems to be a common problem, but I can't find a proper solution. I can't recall how long this has been going on, maybe a week or two? I didn't mess with anything since then, though I deleted a few programs and changed my startup settings to not load Skype and iTunes anymore. I also lost my Downloads shortcut in the "Favorites" menu after uninstalling some stuff, so I think they're connected.

Unfortunately, I don't remember what I uninstalled. Only a few things that were either malware or useless programs, like Simple Files and Audacity.

I've tried pressing Fn Lock a few times, to see if that's the problem, but it seems like that doesn't work, either.

    Thanks.

someone from school reading my internet history at home

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 05:49 AM PST

there are kids at school making fun of my internet history- i understand if i look something up at school because i'm connected to the wifi they can see it (although not sure how they have access to it, but they also make fun of things i've looked up at home. it's not like i'm watching porn or anything, but i remember in homeroom i looked up something on my ipad like 'do colleges care about absences' and a kid all the way in the front of the room said 'that's so weird, i've only been absence twice'. it still makes me uncomfortable someone has access to my history though.

my question is how did they get access to my home computer if i don't bring it to school? could it be connected to my ipad/phone? i use incognito on chrome and make sure i'm not logged into anything and am using https sites- could it be someone guessed my home's wifi password or something to do with my internet history? i read something on how using a school vpn allows access to your full history even at home but honestly, i suck at tech and have no clue what a vpn even is (i've looked up what it means, still don't get it). would changing my ip address solve this issue or will they find a way around it (i still use my ipad at school since there's no lte on it)? i've also used avast and malwarebytes to see if there's any malware but nothing's showing up.

using a macbook air mid 2013 with the firewall turned on. will turning firevault on stop the person from accessing my computer?

sorry for the noob questions- thank you for reading.

USB powered DMX instead of Phantom Power?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:45 AM PST

I have bought a condenser mic, a Bm800. It works but the volume is on the low end so I was gonna buy a phantom power supply. Then I saw a cable, 3.5mm+usb to DMX that is much cheaper. Could I just use that cable instead of the phantom?

Any inactive window automatically gets dimmed

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:36 AM PST

    FIXED!

    Hey there,

Since the last 30 mins my PC suddenly started to dim inactive windows. I have a dual monitor setup and my TV connected via HDMI. The problem first started when I turned on the TV.

    SETUP:

    • Nvidia GTX 1080
    • 1x Asus Monitor via Display Port
    • 1x Asus Monitor via DVI
    • 1x Samsung TV via HDMI
    • I use Displayfusion.

It seems like some program just started a screen dimmer but I can't find out which one. It's really annoying! HELP! :D

    What I did:

Already restarted my PC and plug all of the screens out and in again. Didn't find anything in the Nvidia control panel either...

    EDIT:

I can't believe it...it was actually hidden in Displayfusion and somehow I didn't notice it...

    Computer randomly loses power

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:30 AM PST

This is a odd request for me. My computer loses power and then when ever I turn it back on none of the hardware inside is turned on (ie graphics card that lights up, fans, etc) and the only way I can get it to work is If I remove the graphics card and put it back in.

I've checked the temperature and checked for viruses and still get the same problem.

Here's my pc build https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/dcx666/saved/#view=Nk6LrH got it about 3 years ago

New computer build help(starts up and shuts down immediately, no POST with Ram but post with ram)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 07:31 PM PST

    Parts used:

    ASUS IPIBL-TX HP Intel G33 Motherboard LGA 775 DDR2

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 3.0GHz 6 MB Cache Socket LGA775 desktop CPU

Silicon Power Slim S60 2.5" 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti DirectX 12 GTX 1080 Ti DUKE 11G OC 11GB 352-BitGDDR5X

Cooler Master GeminII M4 - CPU Cooler with 4 Direct Contact Heatpipes

corsair 500w psu(will be upgraded very soon, just what I have laying around)

    komputerbay 4x2gb ddr2 800MHz PC2-6400 (240 PIN) DIMM Desktop Memory

    The problem:

On attempt to startup the fans and lights come on and immediately shuts down. It never enters POST

    Troubleshooting attempt:

I removed all peripherals and the gpu, leaving just the CPU, motherboard, ram and heatsink The same problem occurs.

Next I removed the ram It enters POST and I get a short beep and then a long one signaling a call for ram Next I checked the PSU with a multimeter and all measured pin voltages were correct After this I switched out the ram with known working ram with the same specs and was currently being used on a IPIBL-LB motherboard. Next I switched out the CPU I was using with a known working one that is compatible(Core2 Duo quad Q9), also was running on the same computer the ram i switched out was from(I use this computer everyday)

With all of this I do believe the fault is in the motherboard. If you have any suggests fixing this I would love to hear it. I would really like to get this working.

Edit: title: POST without ram, no POST with ram

My computer is having "stutters" that seem to occur at a fixed interval.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 11:12 PM PST

Hi, I don't know how best to describe this, but my computer seems to be having some issue where at fixed intervals (3-5min), the fans will speed up audibly, and whatever I'm working on (games, rendering audio/video) will slow down and stutter noticeably for about 10 seconds before returning to normal.

It doesn't seem to be related to temperature, as the computer is cool to the touch and the CPU never spikes above ~65 degrees or over ~30% usage. I can hear it happening even when I'm on the desktop, and it can cause issues when opening/loading programs, but once the "period" ends, everything returns to normal.

I'm pretty unexperienced with hardware issues, and I can't think of anything else it might be. Any help would be appreciated!

WIN 10 won't update on Acer Spin 3 SP315 -51-757c -- says I must uninstall Cypress TrackPad first but I can't do that

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 11:09 PM PST

WIN 10 won't update on touch screen laptop Acer Spin 3 SP315 -51-757c -- this is for the Windows 10 Fall Creators update and update can't get past this or do any other updates -- says I must uninstall Cypress TrackPad but I'm not able to figure out how to.

Here is the exact notification box I get halfway through trying to install the MS update:

We couldn't uninstall these apps. You'll need to remove these apps yourself, and then click Refresh. These programs need to be uninstalled because they aren't compatible with the upgrade. -Cypress TrackPad.

Then there is a button named Refresh that you'd click to continue after removing Cypress TrackPad if I could do that.

Cypress TrackPad is not listed under Uninstall. There is nothing with that name listed under Device Manager nor in Task Manager. I found a folder C:\Users\homer\AppData\Roaming\Cypress\x64 but there is no "uninstaller" file there.

I've tried the Microsoft page that has download update and create media installation tool and both those attempts end stuck at the same spot - my uninstall Cypress TrackPad.

I have searched and searched and can't find any discussion of this problem.

Thanks for any guidance in any direction.

please help me set network adapter priority

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 02:44 AM PST

i'm trying to tether my phone so i can use riftcat to play vr games. the problem is that my computer prioritizes the tethered connection over ethernet, so if if i turn off data (because i don't want my pc leeching off my phone network), then i have no internet connection. i'm using windows 7 home 64bit. i've come to the conclusion that there's nothing i can do about it with android.

i've looked up one fix that makes no sense in practice, and i've tried another fix that did nothing.

here's what i tried. it hasn't really done anything. it allows my ethernet to go through (though it seems random for when it wants to let the LAN connection through, and when it still just gives me nothing), and the tethering option shows up in riftcat, but it doesn't allow it to connect to my phone. the point was to make the LAN the connection my PC is actually using to connect to the internet, but allow the phone to communicate with the pc with riftcat via tether (which my pc would NOT use as an internet connection). since i can't even maintain or establish a tether, this method has failed outright.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmIqRs_EqrQ

this is the other fix i looked up but it doesn't make sense from what i'm seeing on my own computer. it says that the lower the number, the higher the priority, but with my network adapters, the LAN adapter is already a higher priority (lower number) than the USB tethering adapter. Gigabit Network Connection = LAN, which the network priority is set to 11 (the lowest, aside from the loopback interface which is at 1)

the Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device = my tethered phone, which is at 14 so according to how this supposedly works, my LAN is ALREADY prioritized over the tether, despite it not actually having priority.

    https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/27994/how-to-change-the-priority-of-wiredwireless-network-cards-in-windows/

here's a screenshot of what i am seeing in my own command prompt with the phone tethered

    Laptop worse temps after cleaning

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 02:23 AM PST

Hi! So, i opened my laptop 2 days ago and i cleaned the fan, heatsink and replaced the thermal paste. The last 2 days it seemed to work cooler but now it's the same as before cleaning it, if not worse. Is it possible to have used too much paste? That's what the cpu (and gpu) are like and there was also some paste under the yellow tape, on the sides, that i couldn't clean without removing the tape. The second thing is that i had to remove the black tape holding the fan to the ... grill/fins, and then it didn't really work anymore. Should i replace it with some insulating tape since that's all i got?
