PC on Windows 10 x64 randomly wakes up - last wake shows nothing Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:49 AM PST My PC is randomly waking up every few hours. A quick check of CMD:
I've checked to ensure that nothing can wake up my PC:
So far I've tried:
I went into the event viewer to see the last time my PC woke up on its own:
What is waking up my PC? Is it the fact that it is syncing while asleep with the Windows Time? How do I fix this? [link] [comments] |
cheapest place/website to buy a legitimate windows licence? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:55 PM PST Someone offered to install windows 10 pro for $15 and i thought it was extremely shady because that same licence goes for 120+? I was wondering where i can find the cheapest price for a legitimate windows 10 pro licence? Any help appreciated, in the past i have fallen prey to those $20 windows pro licence scams on ebay that just end up giving my computer "windows must be activated" popup after 5 months. Service Host Using over 30% Cpu Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:31 AM PST Just recently, I've noticed a couple of processes that run at over 30% cpu useage at idle. Here is what I am talking about. How can I bring this down? It's really limiting my computer when I play games or do other tasks. It persists after a restart. Did a recent update turn Internet Connection Sharing on because I haven't used it before and haven't seen it. Edit: I also wanted to mention that when I restart/shutdown my computer, when it turns back on anything that was running will start again. This should NOT be happening. I want a fresh boot every time. Update: I found the fix thanks to this post. Just reset firewall settings. [link] [comments] |
PDF reader that remembers where you are Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:21 PM PST I'm looking for a pdf reader that can read several files at the same time and remember where you are in them at all times, and reopens all files when you close it or shut you computer off. I have Windows 10. I use Sumatra and Foxit readers, however they are problematic because they don't automatically reopen every file I have opened, nor do they open them at the page I left it. And I want a reader that opens where I last was without me having to bookmark it everytime. Also annoying Windows updates often come at unwanted moments, meaning that I lose my progress in books and have to spend time finding out where I left off. [link] [comments] |
Backup a single folder automatically from one drive to another? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:36 PM PST Hey r/windows! I've got two 2 TB harddrives setup for my picture storage. One is my primary, the second is meant as a backup. Neither drive is a bootable drive; the primary one contains a single folder named 'photos' (with 350 GB or so of photos in dozens of folders). I'd like to set things up so that the primary drive is automatically backed up to the secondary with no interaction from me. I tried to set this up w/ the Windows built in backup, but it kept insisting on backing up my bootable home folder items (/Users/Me/), even after I remove absolutely everything from the list of folders to backup and add only the one D:Photos/ folder I want backed up. Can someone recommend a good way to do this? I don't want straight up mirroring (if something gets deleted by accident from the primary, I don't want it deleted on the backup). Thanks! Anyone else having this problem? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:22 AM PST Ever since the update that made it to where my pc restarts from hibernation (cannot find a way to stop this), my explorer and taskbar are unresponsive as shit. About 80 percent of the time i would say the taskbar is useless and i can't click anything on it. Well i CAN click on shit but it just doesn't open anything. Things like the windows button will not bring up Start menu, i cannot click on the context menu icon, nor can i open my shortcuts for programs. Sometimes i can get rid of the issue with a restart by holding shift-restart and completely shutting down the pc (which still seemingly is coming from hibernation, as my apps will come back up on log in). I have ran the sfc file checker, as well as chkdsk, ran multiple virus scans (malwarebytes chameleon, super anti spyware, adwarecleaner, and junkware removaltool) and found virtually nothing malicious. and/or broken.... so now i am just kind of losing my cool over it. It's really annoying having to either make shortcuts on my desktop(which some of us hate the look of such) or using fucking Run command to get anything to open. [link] [comments] |
PC won't boot with exFat drive connected. Posted: 07 Jan 2018 05:00 PM PST I'm constantly having to unplug my exFat hard drives to boot or restart my PC. Tried disabling USB booting in the BIOS, but no dice. Anyone have a workaround for this? (running Windows 10) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Jan 2018 06:55 PM PST I've shut down my computer 2 times over the last 3 days and each time i turned it back on (almost instantly after the shutdown) it updates stuff. I just got a message saying there are important updates pending or something along those lines even though it's updated 2 times in the last 3 days. Is something wrong or is this normal? Windows 7 - bunch of 240mb folders in my root dir Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:06 PM PST Per the subject, I have a couple of dozen 240mb folders in my root directory that have folder names consisting of 20-30 random numbers and lowercase letters. They are all dated a few days apart starting about july 2017. Anyone know what they are there for and if I can safely delete them? +EDIT- more info ... They all have pretty much the same files and folders in them, and the biggest file in each is netfx_Full.mzz which is 212mb. [link] [comments] |

"Incorrect password" when turning on. Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:08 AM PST Hey, recently when I have been turning on my pc, it goes to the login screen and says that my password is incorrect. I have the settings set to "never reauire password" yet still get the error. When i try typing my password i have to switch to email login rather than username. How do I fix this? It's a pain having to go through extra steps when I am the only one using the pc. [link] [comments] |

Laptop lost windows after sending it in to be repaired at Microsoft. Posted: 07 Jan 2018 05:32 PM PST It's been awhile since we sent it in because the timing was bad we both needed the computer for school and it basically worked exactly the same besides changing the background and doing some administrator setting changes among others. How do I reactivate it? It doesn't work and just gives me an error code. We bought the laptop brand new awhile ago and it came back from repair without windows. Sorry for wall of text I just don't know what else to do besides call Microsoft and probably send it in again. Has an annoying water mark on the screen saying to activate windows . Posted: 07 Jan 2018 05:30 PM PST Everything was fine until near release of the public version, where I don't seem to get it at all. I didn't get the build before that too. Rolling back and then updating would cause some of my programs to uninstall, and there seems to be no way to keep updating then stop at Fall Creators. You can only keep updating until another public release after that. I don't remember the build number as I'm not at home, and pace is currently set to Fast. Please help. [link] [comments] |
Long time Windows 7 user. Switching to Windows 10 worth it? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:54 AM PST Generally use my PC for gaming, music production, and video production. Just wondering if it's worth my time to make the switch. I fucking love Windows 7, just not sure if I can learn to love Windows 10. [link] [comments] |

Is there a way to enable hybrid GUI (Metro, and desktop) on Windows? Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:19 PM PST There are people who are more familiar with touchscreens, and find that metro GUI suit how they work better than the traditional desktop approach. But, at the same time, there are computers that are being shared, and two people might find different workflows more suitable. So, I was thinking that there should be a way to enable Metro as a interactive desktop background, and have the taskbar+start menu over it. I have searched for a solution to this, but there doesn't seem to be a way to mix Metro and the traditional desktop together. [link] [comments] |
Windows 2012 R2 Crash BSOD on vmware KB4056898 no regkey Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:00 PM PST Hey, This morning 2 VM's were on BSOD. After some digging I found they had the KB4056898 in the C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml file. I read the update should only be installed when the registry key was present. (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4056898/windows-81-update-kb4056898) All attempts to recover the vm failed, in the end we recovered from backup. (removing updates with dism, checking files with sfc) I noticed we have more servers where the update was installed bot not rebooted yet. The reg key was not present! It's a Windows 2012 R2 server running on VMware. Lot of other servers don't have the update present of available. Som of the things i tried: https://serverfault.com/questions/762270/windows-server-2012-r2-update-stuck-after-restart-at-9/830047 Anyone else seeing anything like this? Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Getting weird JPG compression/artifacting issues only in Chrome and usually only one monitor Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:34 AM PST x-post from /r/Chrome since that got no replies Windows 10 Pro post yesterdays update Chrome Version 63.0.3239.132 (Official Build) (64-bit) Weird artifacting of black/darker parts of images only in Chrome I don't have the same issues in any other browser. I have uninstalled all of the extensions and cleared the cache/history/cookies but haven't done a full uninstall yet. Sometimes it affects both monitors the same but usually it only effects the lower screen. Refreshing the image sometimes starts the issue sometimes it fixes the issue. 24gb ram, i7 4960k, rx480. I don't think it's a hardware issue since it's browser specific, and I haven't noticed anything in any other programs. It only happens to images in chrome. It also shows up in screenshots so I don't think it's a problem with my monitor/cable. It also happens while scrubbing youtube videos but not while watching them. Still happening more on the lower monitor than the upper monitor. They're running off the same GPU so I don't know why they're being output from chrome differently. I do use Display Cal to color calibrate my monitors, and Display Fusion to manage them. I've disabled both and the issue persists, it also only affects Chrome so I don't think it's a hardware/bad cable issue. [link] [comments] |
Help, my computer crashed which resulted in me reinstalling windows. Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:11 AM PST I don't get the bios that i remember using, it loads up something called UEFI BIOS but the display is distorted to a point where moving my mouse will reveal the image little by little kinda like using an eraser tool to remove the black covering the image. I tried connecting the monitor straight to the motherboards dvi connection and nothign loads up. I am using Safe mode with networking right now to type this. In safe mode, it is in 800x600 default but everything is visable and clear unlike the distortion from UEFI BIOS. Please help. Edit - i am using windows 7 now. [link] [comments] |
